Nice try hot tub rental guy

[–]KILLALLEXTREMISTS 16 points17 points ago

When I was in college at WWU in the mid 1980's I had friends that rented a house on Lake Padden. They built a floating hot tub that looked a lot like this only it had a wooden deck and hull. They built a tub out of fiberglass, packed styrofoam around it and built a wooden hull around that. They built a stove out of an old beer keg and placed it in the bow with some rocks around it to hold and transfer heat. It had a big chimney sticking up like the one in the picture. The stove area was partitioned off from the main tub with wooden slats. At the stern was an ancient outboard motor and they would putter around the lake with it. They would fire up the stove and put sheets of styrofoam over the tub to get it heated up. It would get the water hot enough you had to use a bucket to pour some lake water in to regulate the temperature. We would motor around the lake (slowly, it was pretty slow) and get drunk. When you were sitting down in it your head was popping up out of the water right at the level of the lake except you were warm. Very awesome for cruising around on a cold night.
The guy who owned the floating hot tub took it down to Seafair for the hydroplane races a couple years. He had this rickety old trailer he transported it on that he towed behind his old Volvo 122.

From $140 - $160 per hour (weekday or weekend), it can be yours on Lake Union: http://hottubboats.com/rental-info/rates/

[–]flukzFremont 26 points27 points ago

Why I always tell my friends to google everything.

[–]peen_was 19 points20 points ago

I was like WTF? You can take this out on Lake Union.

OP must follow through.

[–]daveleclairBelltown 6 points7 points ago

Surely OP won't deliver.

[–]Wont_Google_Anything 7 points8 points ago

pfft screw that

[–]mister_pantsThe CD 3 points4 points ago

I wouldn't pay THAT much money to take this out on Lake Union.

[–]type_with_a_lisp 0 points1 point ago

can't seem to find what the size of the hot tub is... how many people can it hold?

and yeah, it's $140 / hr, for a 2-hr rental. so that's a $280 commitment...

[–]ManacitUniversity District (Flair Master) -1 points0 points ago

I believe it is a max of six people, so $25/person/hour or so

http://hottubboats.com/faqs/ Q: Can I bring alcohol during my Seattle Hot Tub Boat rental?

A: Unfortunately, no.

No alcohol? ...but the pic shows alcohol!!

[–]Spikelite 15 points16 points ago

This is what "water" bottles are for.

[–]TheyCallMeSuperChunkNorth Capitol Hill 4 points5 points ago

I prefer vodka-spiked Tropicana OJ bottles to sip on. I've found that room temp. screwdrivers taste surprisingly decent.

[–]thinkythoughtCapitol Hill 5 points6 points ago

this, and simply lemonade/limeade. even when it's warm from being in a hot car it still tastes good.

[–]Spikelite 2 points3 points ago

I am a big fan of Gin and Tonic in a camelback. Looks like water and doesn't particularly smell like booze. So if anyone gets nosy you can just spray some out and they will see its clear, assume its water and leave it at that.

[–]Thjoth 0 points1 point ago

I feel like that would make my camelbak sticky, though. I don't like sticky camelbaks. Not to mention how hot the liquid in the tube gets when you're in the sun.

[–]Spikelite 0 points1 point ago

You put ice in it, and my camelbak has a protected hose so no hot liquids.

Gin + Tonic =/= sticky so no worries there. I can say however that the gin flavor will get into the plastic a little and you will taste gin in there for the next couple of fills, it does go away. I found that washing it out with soap and warm water rather then just rinsing it out with water fixed this problem for the most part.

[–]CryptoPunk 0 points1 point ago

Tonic has a decent amount of sugar in it...

[–]Spikelite 1 point2 points ago

Indeed it does. However from personal experience on many occasions I can attest that I have never had a "sticky" issue with my camelbak as a result.

[–]CryptoPunk 0 points1 point ago

As long as you mix it with a sufficient amount of gin I suppose :D

[–]Spikelite 0 points1 point ago

Is there any other way?

[–]s3rCapitol Hill 0 points1 point ago

Diet tonic exists.

[–]Thjoth 0 points1 point ago

Mine's got a mildly insulated hose as well (it's a milspec camelbak) and if I don't drink from it for an hour or so, the liquid is ridiculously hot from the hose. I suppose the summer sun beats down more in the southeast than it does in the northwest, though.

[–]xodus52 0 points1 point ago

I've heard that alcohol will break down the lining over time, no?

[–]Spikelite 0 points1 point ago

Alcohol typically degrades plastics so it would stand to reason that over time it will cause damage.

[–]courtneyjNewcastle 4 points5 points ago

That pic isn't of a hottubboats.com hot tub boat. Those look like actual boats http://www.myballard.com/2012/07/03/hot-tub-boats-hit-it-big-on-seattle-waters/

[–]XaxxonMagnolia 4 points5 points ago

They have to say "no alcohol" for insurance purposes.

They're not going to monitor you.

[–]SeattleAlex 0 points1 point ago

Its true. I went on one a few months ago and its not like they go through your bags when you get in the boat.

[–]XaxxonMagnolia 0 points1 point ago

You could motor on over to the gas station and buy stuff there too.

[–]huzzahmp 5 points6 points ago

I work for a welding supply company in Seattle and I had a customer come in a while back buying propane. He said he was building a 25 person floating hot tub on Lake Union and that he was heating it with propane. I about shit myself it sounded so awesome. Never saw him again though, not sure what the status on that thing is now.

[–]mnichols_2 1 point2 points ago

That's a Hank Hill sized dream.

[–]ManbeardoSouth Lake Union 1 point2 points ago

That's not a hot tub boat. That's a hot tub YACHT!

[–]theflyingmonkeys 0 points1 point ago

Not sure anyone ever saw him again, but I hear there was a nice explosion in the middle of the lake not too long ago. Bikinis flying everywhere.

[–]jeffinfremontBrougham Faithful 4 points5 points ago

Kramer: It's disgusting. I'm sitting there in a tepid pool of my own filth. All kinds of microscopic parasites and organisms having sex all around me.

Jerry: Well, you used to sit in that hot tub.

Kramer: Jerry that was super-heated water, nothing could live in that.

[–]iamseriodotusSeaview 4 points5 points ago

Try to reserve the first ride of the day if you can. No telling how filthy that thing is at the end of a shift.

[–]slantoflight 1 point2 points ago

It's drained and cleaned after every customer.

[–]iamseriodotusSeaview 6 points7 points ago

I don't see how that's possible given my previous experience with the wait time between "filling up a hot tub" and "being able to use a hot tub".

Though, perhaps they have multiple rotating ships or some kind of Hot Water Gun of which I have not yet conceived.

[–]deltarob 2 points3 points ago

hot water gun is much easier to make than you're thinking

[–]BluShine 1 point2 points ago

All they need is an industrial-sized pump to get water in and out quickly. Then simply have a water heater at the dock that they use to fill the tub.

[–]deltarob 2 points3 points ago

precisely, or even do it inline with steam / electrical coil around the base of the hose

[–]barlisterMountlake Terrace 1 point2 points ago

All you need is an on-demand hot water heater and a hose.

[–]lawmedy 2 points3 points ago

Just don't shine a blacklight on it.

[–]thinkythoughtCapitol Hill 0 points1 point ago

i thought it was only cleaned once a day? i remember that coming up on here. if this is true that's way cooler.

[–]baconseaMaple Leaf 0 points1 point ago

Yes, yes you would.

[–]alligoose 0 points1 point ago

Is that in Chicago?

[–]FransHals 0 points1 point ago

I pretty sure it's the Netherlands, looking at the architecture and the boat (people live on those!) source: I'm Dutch

[–]ManbeardoSouth Lake Union 1 point2 points ago

This picture is of a HotTug. As far as I am aware, they aren't available for rent on Lake Union. However, you can rent a hot tub boat on lake union from Hot Tub Boats. The craft are quite similar except that HotTugs are heated by a wood furnace whereas Hot Tub Boats are 100% electric.

[–]EvilCam 1 point2 points ago

Watch out for landing planes.

[–]theavatareWestlake 1 point2 points ago

They are rettygood at missing ya.
