It ain't winter until somebody's blood is on the ice.

[–]ookiisask 65 points66 points ago

The hockey gods demand a blood sacrifice.

[–]vetus 37 points38 points ago

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD, PUCKS FOR HIS THRONE.

[–]ookiisask 10 points11 points ago

"Iä! Iä! Bertuzzi Fhtagn!"

[–]megustcizer 4 points5 points ago

CLINT MALARCHUK NEVER FORGET

[–]globen 73 points74 points ago

As a zamboni driver I'm impressed by the quality of that ice. I'd like to know if they used a concrete or sand bed for the base, and if they used vinyl inlays or ice paint for the lines.

[–]MedievalManagement 81 points82 points ago

Weird. I understood every word you wrote, but I don't have a fucking clue what you just said.

[–]AhhhClem 15 points16 points ago

A sand bed can be taken up much easier than concrete and either are used to form a strong level base for the ice. The lines have to be painted either on a plastic liner or on a layer of ice below what gets scraped up by the surfacer.

[–]Gettin_Wonky 14 points15 points ago

I understood it better the first time.

[–]bandaid_boy 12 points13 points ago

As a fellow Zamboni guy I concur on the nice ice. Looks to me like hand painted lines and decals...especially to be that small, but could also just be printed paper or plastic too with the correct ammount of cash. When I was a kid our local backyard rink was just a plastic sheet and some 4x4's as a base and worked great (on levelled ground of course). We didn't have a fancy Deere Zam though just brooms shovels and a hose. I'd like to make one of these in my neighborhood in Edmonton but need a bigger yard...maybe my neighbor will help out too.

[–]snitchsgetstitchs107 2 points3 points ago

At my local rink they use ice paint, is one significantly better than the other?

[–]greyskyeyes 2 points3 points ago

As a hockey player, I don't like skating on sand-based rinks. It feels hollow.

[–]globen 2 points3 points ago

I agree with that. I much prefer concrete, but the facility I work at is a twin pad sand base. Last year we had to rebuild our entire rink 2 from scratch due to sand heaving through the surface. You never have those problems on a modern concrete rink.

[–]Aederrex 2 points3 points ago

The lines are pretty rough, I'd bet they're painted. That is some nice ice though. Speaking of which, I have to get to work and smooth out some ice myself.

[–]_chernozem 54 points55 points ago

I like how it spans both neighbors backyards

[–]youngwriter13 17 points18 points ago

That was my thought too. They even put a break in their fence for it.

[–]akatherder 14 points15 points ago

This is a custom in canada. It's rude not to build/share a rink with your neighbors.

[–]lifeisublime 13 points14 points ago

a very nice elderly man used to build one in the park across from my house every winter. he worked his ass off, and gave it his best, but it usually turned out pretty shitty. we still had hours of fun on that shit though.

sadly i haven't seen that old guy out there for a few years though. oh well, thanks wherever you are old guy.

[–]Albinohurdler 75 points76 points ago

The rink looks like a face. Also here is the John Deere Zamboni attachment

[–]straighttoplaid 47 points48 points ago

I never knew there was a market for home Zambonis

[–]wewd 32 points33 points ago

Somebody's kid got called a hoser one too many times and this is what we end up with.

[–]swabfalling 18 points19 points ago

Somebody's kid was the hoser too many times.

The losers of the game hose down the ice, hence the term.

[–]187ninjuh 7 points8 points ago

TIL

[–]AhhhClem 7 points8 points ago

I learned the hard way that one has to dig in with skates when resurfacing ice using a fire hose or discover backward jet propulsion. I think they meant the other usage of hoser, one that hoses another, cheats or screws them over. At the old ice mill pond up the street from where I grew up we had to dig a hole in the ice and use buckets to freshen the ice.

[–]solzhen 2 points3 points ago

Is that what "hoser" means? lol

[–]Maybeyesmaybeno 11 points12 points ago

My wife assumed this rink was in Quebec, so she made sure to call it a Jean-Deere.

[–]Kpat18 14 points15 points ago

Its in Edmonton, not that far from my house actually.

Better Picture

[–]candyman82 9 points10 points ago

Was originally in Quebec, but somebody moved it to Denver.

[–]APK44 3 points4 points ago

Oilers and Flames jerseys suggest it's in Alberta. I Believe it's Lethbridge.

[–]Aquagoat 205 points206 points ago

Canadian here. We call that winter. Notice all the snow and ice?

That is a bad ass rink though.

[–]BrainInAJar 15 points16 points ago

Vancouverite here, our winter hockey rink is just called a swimming pool

[–]NewAccountJusForThis[S] 128 points129 points ago

Canadian here. Sorry I didn't phrase it to your liking.

[–]Aquagoat 123 points124 points ago

Sorry for making you feel bad enough to feel the need to apologize.

[–]Afa1234 52 points53 points ago

And I'm sorry for viewing this shaming accord, have a good winter!

[–]captainmorgan23 31 points32 points ago

This is exactly what I expect to see in an exchange between 2 Canadians.

[–]j_rock_baby 32 points33 points ago

[–]Kalmah666 9 points10 points ago

Canadian here. Sadly this is pretty much the only Hockey we'll see this year...

We need replacement owners that will fuck up badly enough

[–]leftysixshots 7 points8 points ago

Californian here, was so impressed to learn my Canadian girlfriends family floods their backyard to make a rink every year. Serious childhood envy.

[–]rwhockey29 3 points4 points ago

texan here, FUCK, i want that in my back yard :'(

[–]Qikdraw 19 points20 points ago

Move to Alberta, you'll feel right at home. Guns, oil and cattle.

[–]picklefrog 9 points10 points ago

The pic was taken in August, so they're indeed prepping for autumn winter

[–]borkedddd 34 points35 points ago

It's currently 20c in Toronto right now.

[–]Jaerdo 25 points26 points ago

4C in Edmonton. Though that could change overnight... Good old Alberta.

[–]mrahh 3 points4 points ago

Montreal checking in with 19ºC.

[–]Norse_of_60 11 points12 points ago

-5 in Whitehorse this morning. It snowed last night.

[–]lnev 10 points11 points ago

I'll see you and raise.

[–]mrsticknote 5 points6 points ago

Windy as hell this morning tho.

[–]archetype28 5 points6 points ago

9c In Saskatchewan right now. Waiting for winter so i can ride this

[–]FauxNewsFan 20 points21 points ago

You seem too big to ride a dog.

[–]candyman82 2 points3 points ago

Ah... the old reddit switch-a-roo

[–]CalaveraManny 0 points1 point ago

I advice against riding pitbulls, they usually don't like it and they sure can bite.

[–]Genocidicbunny 2 points3 points ago

It hit friggin 37C today in Santa Cruz. The SF Bay Area's had a weird ehatwave this week.

[–]jsstaedtler 3 points4 points ago

If we don't get freezing temperatures this winter, I'll be writing my MP.

[–]agilemittens 25 points26 points ago

This must be Edmonton? Smitty jersey. Edmontonian here...

[–]lakeshorewest 7 points8 points ago

Torontonian here. I also see a Flames jersey, perhaps this is in Red Deer!

[–]SirAdrian0000 3 points4 points ago

I do believe that's the group that won the back yard rink competition on CBC two years ago.

[–]parallel_jay 1 point2 points ago

If I remember correctly I think they threw this up during the 2006 playoff run.

[–]sahu99 12 points13 points ago

came here to say thats a Ryan Smyth jersey. He was my favorite player growing up.

[–]irossrule 6 points7 points ago

Smitty!! #94 on the ice, and #1 in our hearts!

[–]spiralstarez 4 points5 points ago

It's the mullet! Go Smitty.

[–]AlexWilliamRoss 3 points4 points ago

Captain Canada! I shed a tear when I heard he was coming back to oil country

[–]lakeshorewest 23 points24 points ago

Did next door neighbours take down part of the fence to build this rink across two backyards?

[–]Johnlordly 13 points14 points ago

Looks like it, if I had cool neighbors I would propose this idea as well. Maybe a basketball court in the summer time.

[–]Rob_C 10 points11 points ago

Why tear down the fence, when you can just buy the entire lot?

I did some work on one of these adjacent houses, and was amazed to see they had fenced in the lot nextdoor for a permanent hockey/basketball court.

[–]Norse_of_60 5 points6 points ago

It's the Soo. What else ya gonna do?

[–]Frdl 1 point2 points ago

When you're worth $2bil, that's a no brainer. Jewish people suck at hockey too, so they'll need all the practice they can get.

[–]Jerks_took_my_name 22 points23 points ago

What is this, a rink for ants?

[–]Aienan 9 points10 points ago

Considering that this is likely in Alberta... (Given the Flames jersey on the right and the Smyth Jersey (Left). This shot was likely taken last year, because Alberta doesn't have that much snow yet. In fact, we have almost none in any city.

[–]taylorcraig634 5 points6 points ago

Coolest parents ever!

[–]musicalsteve 3 points4 points ago

Smytty!!!!

[–]backtail 4 points5 points ago

"Hey let's share our backyard for the greater good of the community!"... said no american ever.

[–]marash1000 2 points3 points ago

Hockey rink is surprised to see you.

[–]Tandemize 3 points4 points ago

it looks so damn nice outside

[–]no_frills_attached 3 points4 points ago

Looks pretty cold eh?

[–]rickanddianne 3 points4 points ago

Sky box even.

[–]brandonw00 0 points1 point ago

Is this what it is like to play hockey in Canada?

[–]Merfen 2 points3 points ago

I get the feeling some Americans are going to think that we already have this much snow/ice in October.

[–]Locusthorde300 0 points1 point ago

"Sorry about your fence"

"It's okay, as long as we can use it"

[–]1842morpho 2 points3 points ago

OILER FANS!

[–]Breaking_bread 0 points1 point ago

Booo, the forecast is calling for snow tomorrow actually!

[–]RedeemingVices 1 point2 points ago

That is so fucking cool.

[–]happyphilter 0 points1 point ago

I've actually seen a dozen or so pop up in my town here in Michigan.

[–]sugarringdoughnut 0 points1 point ago

The rink looks really dazed...

[–]AustinQuincyDubimic 0 points1 point ago

Already? Hell, it's only october.

[–]locke_5 0 points1 point ago

A.k.a. another day in Canada

[–]camerontylek 1 point2 points ago

They must be nice in Canada, my insurance won't even let me have a trampoline in my backyard!

[–]coronaas 1 point2 points ago

Smyth and Smith jerseys? Sorry but is this in Edmonton??

[–]Dead-Etiquette 0 points1 point ago

Fuck yeah, pissed about the lockout to no end however

[–]DeviousCheese 0 points1 point ago

fucking awesome

[–]Tramontana 0 points1 point ago

Where's the igloos?

[–]microbio_girl 0 points1 point ago

There is a backyard rink song! http://youtu.be/kW7k3PWsG8g

[–]89733 0 points1 point ago

When I was a kid we had the smallest backyard imaginable, but we would still freeze it over and skate/practice on it. Oh, those were the days.

[–]Mr_Ballyhoo 0 points1 point ago

Wait god damn second here. When did John Deere start making the zamboni attachment for their tractors!?

[–]combzy89 1 point2 points ago

That is a pretty cool zamboni.

[–]addiv 0 points1 point ago

This looks cool but kind of small. More like a rinky-dink.

[–]busted_up_chiffarobe 0 points1 point ago

I can't even imagine the liability issues here. Hope their policy carriers don't find out about this one.

[–]FordSVT1 3 points4 points ago

It's Canada, not the US, no one's going to fucking sue because Johnny fell on the ice at the neighbour's house.

[–]fizzlefist 2 points3 points ago

TIL There's a zamboni attachment for a John Deere.

[–]Supermans_Underwear 0 points1 point ago

Hell yea, fuckin-A, eh.

[–]YeahButDidHeDied 0 points1 point ago

Sweet! A double-wide rink! Seems very practical for winter in the suburbs. I live on a lot of land so we just build a communal ice rink every year, but this is a very well-made rink! Way nicer than ours, AND they have the Tramboni attachment!

[–]cocobat 0 points1 point ago

i want one of those

[–]piezeppelin 1 point2 points ago

Jesus, where I am the high today was in the mid 90's (Palo Alto)

[–]scrivenerserror 0 points1 point ago

Now I want to know where you can rent a small zamboni.

[–]gowin4 1 point2 points ago

Fuckin Awesome Eh!

[–]Andokool12 0 points1 point ago

As a Canadian I find it funny to think that this wasn't funny to me - it's common.

[–]JessiMc 1 point2 points ago

Canadian here. I can vouch for this picture. I have 4 backyard rinks (that I know of) within two kilometers of my house and one rink in a park down the street. They aren't made yet, obviously, but they will be. Oh, they will be.

[–]DiabeticKid 1 point2 points ago

Edmonton checking in. Yup rinks in edmonton, if you look close you can see the Oilers logo at center ice aswell. They also open the rink to the "public" even tho they mostly only let little kids and parents on it. Wicked rink. Cant wait till ODR (outdoor rink) season to start. Get me some puck! Im on my phone, sorry for spelling.

[–]sid2112 1 point2 points ago

uh looks like its already there -- I'm from Georgia....

[–]bilateralchicken 1 point2 points ago

... The only hockey we'll be seeing this year.

[–]octop666 0 points1 point ago

Canadian here,i'm still wearing short and i would shoot myself if it started snowing this early.

[–]worldalpha_com 1 point2 points ago

Awesome rink. Sharing it at the beginning of October will make all the southern Americans think that Canada is already full of snow though!

[–]u83rmensch 0 points1 point ago

this reminds me of hte simpsons pool. ya know that one where they got a pool?

[–]hal9005 0 points1 point ago

Is that a rink FOR ANTS???!!!

[–]abctuba21 1 point2 points ago

TIL there are Zamboni attachments for tractors.

[–]owleyes44 0 points1 point ago

HOCKEY SEASON!!! Best damn game ever!!!

[–]Chickenzrck 0 points1 point ago

I wish i could convince my neighbor to let me build a hockey rink in their yard.=[

[–]bkope -1 points0 points ago

damn Oiler fans.......

[–]bitnode -1 points0 points ago

Zamboni! STAHP!

[–]AnViLLiaN- 0 points1 point ago

Canadians say... ABOUT DAMN TIME! EH?

[–]LeeUhm 0 points1 point ago

Where is this specifically?

[–]Samthescott 0 points1 point ago

It was 110 degrees where I live yesterday. I'm jealous.

[–]RomanTheCube 1 point2 points ago

fuck me, that is the most beautiful sight in the world.

Where in canada is it already snowi...looks outside ...damnit

[–]ProcrastinationMan 0 points1 point ago

And the hockeyfield is like: OH NO!

[–]Alexxandria 0 points1 point ago

Typical Canadian. -"Mind if I take down your fence and use half your yard for my ice rink?" -"Oh geez, sure. Why not eh?"

[–]nooneisreal -1 points0 points ago

No one would end that sentence with "eh".

[–]RinardoEvoris 2 points3 points ago

must be cold where you are in Canada. In Toronto I was wearing shorts today.

[–]Mozen 0 points1 point ago

WE DON'T GET SNOW TILL JANUARY (in Ontario)!!!!!

[–]MixBlender 0 points1 point ago

This is in Alberta somewhere. I see a flames Jersey, and a Ryan Smyth, Edmonton Oilers Jersey.

[–]moose_man 1 point2 points ago

Canada's always ready for winter

[–]pillbilly 0 points1 point ago

I live in North Dakota, and someone in our neighborhood has a hockey rink in their backyard.

[–]colt1hryh 0 points1 point ago

Its outta edmonton :(

[–]spicoli-bagel 0 points1 point ago

Let's be honest, they have to do something since the NHL is still locked out, eh?

[–]Dummies102 1 point2 points ago

the ice is most definitely not ready http://imgur.com/0Xw4t

[–]Fortehlulz33 1 point2 points ago

Fuckin lockout...

[–]Whitebeard 0 points1 point ago

Southern Arizonan here. Someone explain the picture please?

[–]knighmare 1 point2 points ago

Canada is always getting ready for winter

[–]PastorToastMan 1 point2 points ago

I want to see a real game on there. Just 10 adults from the neighborhood, all liquored up, playing their hearts out on the mini rink.

[–]andrea_t539 0 points1 point ago

OLD!!!!

[–]dogfunky 1 point2 points ago

Any other time during the year, the neighbor's baseball goes into their yard. "You're offsides, eh."

[–]Downvote_Highscore 0 points1 point ago

i didn't know John Deere made Zamboni attachments

[–]SoggySeaWaffle 1 point2 points ago

Canadian here. Wore a T-Shirt outside today. It's not skating season yet.

[–]Dogribb 0 points1 point ago

That's a pic from the Summer Solstice Final

[–]cronchuck 0 points1 point ago

The most badass rink. Two yards, and full boards? Better than some of my local rinks!

[–]Dogribb 0 points1 point ago

Best way to hide a grow op

[–]DasPuma 0 points1 point ago

There isn't even snow here yet, you getting a little ahead of yourself.

[–]SGIG9 0 points1 point ago

Can I pay just to help out, maintain it, and be in its presence?

[–]tb44s 0 points1 point ago

Winter is coming

[–]JamSquad 0 points1 point ago

I guess I can't use the boards to stop on this rink. I guess I could use the boards to fall out of the rink and break several minor bones.

[–]snitchsgetstitchs107 0 points1 point ago

That's a pretty small rink, wish I had one all the same.

[–]gamewiz101 0 points1 point ago

This needs all of my upvotes.

[–]Karl_Marx_ 0 points1 point ago

That looks so small.

[–]TheSmartypants 0 points1 point ago

There's a zamboni attachment for a JD lawn tractor? Awesome!

[–]xeonrage 0 points1 point ago

So... uhh..... is it just me or is there like 20+ft behind the near side red line?

[–]hobbitnamedfrod0 0 points1 point ago

False: That pic was taken in MN. I'm actually pretty sure of this. Its also pretty common outside of the Zamboni.

EDIT: Not false. Hockey jerseys are all canadian teams.

[–]greenspartan10 0 points1 point ago

Did you mean summer?

[–]duckduckmooses 0 points1 point ago

It's in Timberlea, Ft McMurray, AB.

[–]PeterROTTENTail 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that summer in Canada?

[–]pooterpon 0 points1 point ago

American here who lives in the suburbs.

You have a fenced off backyard? Actual privacy?

I can't begin to tell you how sad my fence is.

[–]edasnoraa 1 point2 points ago

Do they really love hockey that much?

[–]topgun169 0 points1 point ago

More like Canada's getting ready for the NHL lockout.

[–]cajunbander 0 points1 point ago

That's so old I saw in on College Humor.

[–]Cracksoda 0 points1 point ago

So the "lockout" is over?

[–]HabsSuck91 0 points1 point ago

lucky canada, at least you have some sort of hockey

[–]fingers144 -1 points0 points ago

[–]dropasaurus 0 points1 point ago

Zamboni model 100, I never knew.

[–]jon1746 0 points1 point ago

Now I can't get the song "I want to drive a zamboni out of my head" by the gear daddies

[–]Ekmanc 0 points1 point ago

That is just awesome I wish i had one of those growing up, or hell I wish I had one right now...

[–]Napalm_Star21 0 points1 point ago

I think that picture may have been taken during Canadian summer.

[–]KrimsonTide 1 point2 points ago

Only in Canada will you see two neighbors sharing their back yards to make a rink.

[–]uroc 0 points1 point ago

uh, how do the get the Zamboni out?

[–]orthag 0 points1 point ago

Oddly enough this picture was taken in June.

[–]DTaurasi 0 points1 point ago

Where is this, its still hot in montreal :/

[–]tankfoot86 0 points1 point ago

I love that the neighbors are sharing (and possibly destroying) their yards for a common love

[–]contraryexample 0 points1 point ago

TIL canadians buy deeres

[–]facecardz -1 points0 points ago

Actually, in Canada, they call that 'Summer'

[–]jylesmercury 0 points1 point ago

You have got to be shitting me! This is a childhood dream come true. I'm from Michigan so Canada's field of dreams is the same mine.

[–]sarahmcsheep 1 point2 points ago

Where in Canada is this? It's been 20 degrees and sunny for the last 2 months here on the west coast... Not that we can build an outdoor ice rink on the west coast anyway... Just didn't realize it was cold enough anywhere in the country yet.

[–]Steve0mac 0 points1 point ago

....man I miss hockey

[–]Fr0z3nT3rr0r 0 points1 point ago

[–]asdfand123 0 points1 point ago

Wow NICE i'm impressed, fellow Edmontonian here, that looks real fun to play on I love playing outdoor. Great job.

[–]aeoliany 0 points1 point ago

[–]badger035 0 points1 point ago

As a Southern Californian still enduring 100+ heat in October, this image blows my mind.

[–]tywent 0 points1 point ago

Playin puck on the backyard rink is what winter's all about.

[–]AliasUndercover 0 points1 point ago

You guys are nuts. Like I can talk being from Texas. But at least football you don't play on the freezing cold death-ice.

[–]Badwoolf 0 points1 point ago

That. Looks. AWESOME!!!!

[–]aDildoAteMyBaby 0 points1 point ago

Bubbles get the fuck of that zamboni! We only got enough gas for one go-around, and we haven't even sold all these cheeseburgers to pay for it yet.

[–]trstmeimadoctor 0 points1 point ago

this is beautiful. I need this in my backyard

[–]awatos 0 points1 point ago

Is that a Sharks jersey?

[–]145gtw 0 points1 point ago

As a Leafs fan......What is hockey?

[–]sephferguson 0 points1 point ago

This rink is in Edmonton! Two neighbours combined and knocked down their fences to make this rink. It's pretty bad ass.

We won't be seeing these pop up for another 2 months or so though.

Here's a shot without the people on the ice :
