That's why they changed the logo and chopped off the "music" part two and a half years ago.

[–]MachineHeart 51 points52 points ago

This. They no longer claim to be a channel that plays music. They publicly dropped the word "music" from their brand. They just kept the initials because they're so recognizable. I'm not saying I like it, but at least they're being honest now.

[–]helium_farts 21 points22 points ago

So what does the "M" stand for now? Macaroni? Muppets? Mastication?

[–]MachineHeart 58 points59 points ago

"It means 'Fuck you'". -- Mtv

[–]Deeviant 28 points29 points ago

The "M" stands for "Moron"...

[–]PeaceOfTheHighLife 6 points7 points ago

I prefer Mediocre..

[–]sircharles420 3 points4 points ago

Mormon?

[–]Peter_Nincompoop 3 points4 points ago

The same way that TLC stands for "Moron"?

[–]thelastknowngod 12 points13 points ago

It doesn't need to mean anything. It's just letters at this point.

Is Honey Boo Boo on TLC or The Learning Channel?

[–]semifraki 4 points5 points ago

TLC is the same way. In the US, "TLC" no longer officially stands for anything. In some other countries, it now stands for "The Ladies' Channel".

[–]thelastknowngod 2 points3 points ago

That was my point. ;-)

[–]coyote1284 7 points8 points ago

MTV stands for MTV; it's the brand, not an acronym.

[–]marvsup -1 points0 points ago

It's like LG

[–]cubicplains 5 points6 points ago

I believe LG stands for 'life's good', or at least that their slogan.

[–]live_wire_ 1 point2 points ago

That's not too bad!

Why don't they use that name at all?

[–]Ran4 2 points3 points ago

They used it, but back then they made really crappy products. When they started making decent products, they switched names.

[–]thekrone 3 points4 points ago

Rumor has it they were talking about changing it to "millennium", but I couldn't find anything on their official site or wikipedia or anything to back that up.

[–]snoochieboochies4 2 points3 points ago

It stands for maternity because all they show is teen pregnancy shows now.

[–]CajunTurkey 1 point2 points ago

I would like to assume "Mature", mostly for mature contents but not the nature of the programs and people in it.

[–]A_British_Gentleman 1 point2 points ago

MENtertainment

[–]iwillupvoteyourface 1 point2 points ago

I can vouch for this, i worked on the UK re brand a few years back the main channel number was moved to out of the music section on sky and Virgin media in the UK and moved to the entertainment section MTV still does music tho i don't get this constant complaining, they have 5 other channels dedicated to just music, they have MTV MUSIC, MTV ROCKS, MTV HITS, MTV BASE, and MTV CLASSIC. The problem is all of these channels combined wouldn't get near the same amount of ratings as say an episode of Geordie shore would get which is why the main channel became an entertainment channel. I would place a gentleman wager that most people who complain about the change in branding and direction, wouldn't watch MTV even if it still did have music on it.

[–]outfoxthefox 4 points5 points ago

How often do you write out 'Geordie' that you phone is switching with 'Jersey'.

[–]CowFu 4 points5 points ago

Jersey LeForge is by far my favorite engineer character from the star treks.

[–]outfoxthefox 2 points3 points ago

Always a fan favorite. :)

[–]thekrone 2 points3 points ago

Well, he did say he worked for the UK re-brand. He might be from the Newcastle area. Or talk about folks from the Newcastle area frequently.

[–]outfoxthefox 2 points3 points ago

Apologies all around. My American brain assumed that jersey shore and its directly related acts was all the evil we had been subjected to. I see now, the UK has their own problem children, thanks to you and google.

I was happier not knowing.

[–]thekrone 2 points3 points ago

No worries. I actually didn't realize there was a "Geordie Shore" either. I just knew the term "Geordie" because I'm a big follower of English soccer, and fans of Newcastle are frequently called Geordies, and I've come to understand that pretty much anyone from that area can safely be called a Geordie.

[–]jessek 1 point2 points ago

the UK localized version of Jersey Shore is "Geordie Shore"

[–]iwillupvoteyourface 2 points3 points ago

Geordie Shore is a program in the UK it is a spin off of Jersey shore but the people are probably even worse.

[–]brettbullet 1 point2 points ago

I work for MTV currently and even though I watch exactly 0% of our programming I still find it annoying when people complain about the lack of music videos.

[–]rossryan 1 point2 points ago

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

Which is funny because I remember back in 1995 (only 5 years ago) they were playing music videos in heavy rotation

[–]BeardedStrangeBatPan 0 points1 point ago

Only 5 years ago? How do I math?

[–]Evanthatguy 77 points78 points ago

This is so funny and original.

[–]capnjack78 5 points6 points ago

Jokes from the 90s!

only 90s kids will get this

[–]listerinebreath 15 points16 points ago

i know right? this made me realize that mtv doesn't play music anymore! Hopefully someone will make the same meme with the history channel, so i can realize for the first time that they don't show history!

[–]SaikoGekido 6 points7 points ago

HA! Next you'll say that Animal Planet doesn't show animals anymore. If that's true, then explain the mermaids and dragons.

[–]ByJiminy 2 points3 points ago

If you don't think MTV has been relevant (I'm assuming by "artistically relevant" you mean "culturally relevant") since the 1990s, I'm going to guess that you're the one who's no longer tapped in, not them.

[–]Descriptivista 0 points1 point ago

And the Most Hipster Comment of the Day goes to...

[–]FordSVT1 36 points37 points ago

I'd rather watch MTV than see another post this lame.

[–]RedAnarchist 11 points12 points ago

Well to be fair, if this was 1997 the joke might still only be outdated by like 3 years.

[–]danny841 -1 points0 points ago

True Life is insanely watchable and 16 and Pregnant/Teen Mom has done more to dissuade people from having babies than any abstinence only program.

[–]ravelle 2 points3 points ago

[–]hobofats 2 points3 points ago

making fun of MTV with an austin powers reference? is it 1999 again?

[–]thegreatvortigaunt 1 point2 points ago

Call me crazy, but whoever chooses the playlist for MTV's rock channel (this is in the UK, not sure if it's different elsewhere) actually has some damn good taste. You will usually see something tasteful (Nirvana, Black Sabbath, Foo Fighters, etc) on there, with a tiny fratboy/nu-metal minority. Sure, you have to sit through the shitty Geordie Shore adverts, but otherwise the music's pretty good.

[–]simjimmy 0 points1 point ago

After seeing the pic of Dr. Evil tell me I'm not the only one who said "music" with his voice in my head lmao.

[–]theoctopawd 3 points4 points ago

this joke is new and fresh

[–]p0diabl0 1 point2 points ago

The "Learning" Channel.

[–]Infini-Bus 2 points3 points ago

It looks like this picture came from 12 years ago.

[–]shawmutt 1 point2 points ago

And it's still late, they stopped playing music videos 20 years ago.

[–]ChristinaCojocari 0 points1 point ago

I agree!

[–]iLuv3M3 0 points1 point ago

While this is unoriginal and old, is there anyone that really wishes there was a channel that would play music videos. Not like Fuse or VH1, because they've fallen into basically the same path as MTV but I mean the whole music videos and VJs thing?

Music Videos are still made and the only place to really see them are youtube..which has basically gone to shit now.

[–]Brewster-Rooster 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure about the US, but in the UK there's a channel called 'MTV Music' which actually plays music. pretty weird.

[–]44problems 0 points1 point ago

If you like music on TV (bonus if you're a Nielsen family) PLEASE watch Palladia. It is an HD channel owned by MTV, but shows only music. Mostly concerts, with some documentaries and some classic performance films like The Last Waltz.

[–]heylookitsmykel 0 points1 point ago

It does play music and plays a lot from good new bands, but it's usually just background music for lame shows. Like the show I Just Want My Pants Back. Stupid, pretentious show, but good soundtrack.

[–]TheMediumPanda 1 point2 points ago

I accidentally turned on MTV in a hotel room 2 months ago. Honestly, I haven't even seen a second in something like 7-8 years. Unfortunately my wife asked me not to turn away so I saw 5 videos I thoroughly regret:

  1. Something with some weird looking guy named David Gutter who LOVED putting himself in the shot although he clearly shouldn't.
  2. Some generic video with Justine Bieber in a bowling alley where everybody were dancing all the time. The fact that Justine only danced for some 3-4 seconds convinced me that's not one of his 'talents'.
  3. Lady Gaga butchering 'Lady is a tramp'.
  4. God help me, another David Gutter song, even worse and more generic than the first one.
  5. Rita Oro then came on to tell me I should know I'm only in it if it's hot right now. I decided it wasn't and promised my wife a massage in return for the remote.

Nah,, it didn't exactly win me over.

[–]lavagreen 0 points1 point ago

Wow, Reddit.. such an edgy, bold statement.

Lets push more of these unique thoughts and ideas to the front page. You guys are so creative here, it blows me away.

[–]slappy_nutsack 1 point2 points ago

Remember back in the early 80's when MTV actually showed videos?

[–]clementyne 1 point2 points ago

Yes. I can't believe they don't play music videos anymore. Their shows are such crap. I am so old that I saw the first video when MTV went on the air when I was 7. The videos were/music were so good then, even up through the mid 90's, then it went down hill.

[–]Bill_Clintons_Choad 1 point2 points ago

Un Pajarito me dijo que MTV lla no vale verga.

[–]hooizyoo 1 point2 points ago

I don't get why they don't rename the channel in a rebranding effort. It's been done before. Spike TV used to be TNN.

[–]Praesil 1 point2 points ago

I think the M now means "Modern"

[–]ak4747 0 points1 point ago

[–]gdbys 1 point2 points ago

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It's funny, people complain that MTV contains no music, but it is the peoples fault. Networks program what people watch. If people don't watch it, they don't program it.

You people didn't watch music. Instead you watch idiots getting drunk and fighting while smushing.

[–]J_Sass 1 point2 points ago

In South Africa they moved it away from the music channels section.

[–]wilkil 1 point2 points ago

If I'm not mistaken, the last time I watched MTV i noticed that the caption said "MTV: Musical Television" That was about a year and a half ago but I still thought that they are gradually shifting away from the title of MUSIC TELEVISION like they were credited for being in the 80's and early 90's.

[–]nickrandall 0 points1 point ago

how many of you would actually sit there and watch music videos on MTV when you have them available at your own convenience 24/7 online?

[–]chuchuy 0 points1 point ago

MTV? How irrelevant.

[–]Flaimelion 0 points1 point ago

I was going to comment "would you rather a channel of nonstop nicki manaj and Justin beiber?" but than I thought it would be better than being subjected to that music AND mtv shows.

[–]Miltefar 1 point2 points ago

Honestly, the launch of MTV was one of the most bad-ass things to see. It's on youtube: you can check it out. And the fact to broadcast "Video Killed The Radio Star" was the announcement of something epic. And that changed the way videoclips were produced, like Youtube did when it came along.

Now, everybody agrees that it is shit, no need to elaborate on that. But man was that exciting at that time!

[–]Fancypants753 1 point2 points ago

HA-HA MTV HASN'T PLAYED MUSIC SINCE 7 AM THIS MORNING! WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE?

[–]Calibas 0 points1 point ago

Good thing there's MTV2, their new "music-only" channel.

[–]kingzilch 0 points1 point ago

Fun fact: the "MTV doesn't play music" bitching has now lasted longer than music on MTV did.

[–]GoAvs14 0 points1 point ago

[–]A_British_Gentleman 1 point2 points ago

[–]guitarnoir 0 points1 point ago

My sister's kids are watching MTV right now. From what I've seen of it, those initials stand for, "Moron TV".

So much stupidity, in such a concentrated form is sure to lead to some so of critical-mass event. I suspect that the people who make these shows are either soul-dead, or so deeply ashamed of the time at MTV that in the future, they'll substitute, "Fry-Cook", for this entry on their resumes.

[–]dekogeko 1 point2 points ago

Video killed the radio star. And the Internet killed MTV.

[–]slappy_nutsack 1 point2 points ago

Pat Benetar's "You Better Run" was the second video on MTV. (Off the top of my head which is full of useless facts)

EDIT: Missed the word "second".

MTV is the go-to example of Network Decay into Total Abandonment

But ABC Family is actually much funnier if you compare what they show to what they originally wanted to show (on Total Abandonment, click Disney Examples, read first 2 paragraphs)

[–]AngryCod -1 points0 points ago

MTV is directly responsible for a very large amount of popular television, including Comedy Central, TV Land, and all of the Nickelodeon channels. It's easy to hate on them, but Music Television, as a concept, was dead twenty years ago. Should they have stuck with it even though it was clearly dying?

[–]NaChoBizness 1 point2 points ago

MTV is part of Viacom, not the whole.

[–]peoplepleasermd -2 points-1 points ago

Is this a post about MTV with an Austin Powers reference? I can't stop laughing as I picture OP posting this, certain it was comedy gold.

[–]Kouraazio -1 points0 points ago

Upvoted for using dr. Evil! We need more Austin Powers jokes!! NOW!

[–]jayhawk88 -3 points-2 points ago

You don't want music on MTV any longer. If you did, there would be music on MTV. Simple as that.

The music video was fine for it's time, but the iPod killed it. We don't want to sit in front of a TV and watch music videos any longer.

[–]stayclassysdiego 1 point2 points ago

Because we'd rather watch Oompa Loompa tanned whores arguing with eachother on reality shows? Speak for yourself dude.
