Yeah..still makes me chuckle everytime though. Its raining where I am so I thought it would brighten some moods up

I've not seen this yet. So who cares if - like everything on the internet - this is a repost.

I have wanted one of these for so long. Every time I purchased one, it died. I joined this subreddit so that perhaps one day I may be able to own one without it dying.

I bought one like 3 or 4 years ago at petco being kept in freshwater, he was about 2.5 inches long. Hes grown maybe an inch max since then (i figured he might be stunted being raised in those conditions) but has been happy and healthy with me ever since. Great fish, cool personality. what size tank/ what kind of water did you keep yours in? Puffers are a little difficult but im sure we could help you out if you really want one

I have one too and he's doing awesome. He's prob about 2 inches long. What size tank do you keep your in and what salinity? Mine's in a 20 gal at salinity of 1.016.

[–]boredincubicle 0 points1 point ago

I keep him in a 29 high. His salinity over the yearas has fluctuated a good deal. Highest was 1.020, currently he is in 1.012. I also have a divider in there so i can keep bumbleegobys, so its more like hes in a 20 gallon tall. Around 3.5 inches now and like i said he hasnt grown really over the past couple years so i think hes done. if he reached 6 inches like he was supposed to i would have ended up going for a bigger tank

[–]caseygail 0 points1 point ago

do you think he didn't grow because of the tank size? and is that just a myth or is there any truth to it where a fish's growth will be stunted if it isn't in a big enough aquarium? mines growing verrrrryy slowlyyy and am wondering if i should move him into a 30 gal.

[–]boredincubicle 0 points1 point ago

I dont think so, I had him in a 20 long when i got him, then upgraded him to the 29 gallon a few months afterwards where hes been for years. i only put the divider/gobies in like 2 weeks ago.

I think he got stunted from spending so much of his life being raised in completely freshwater at a petco, when he prefers brackish to even full on marine conditions. if yours is still growing id think about getting him something bigger than the 20, because a full grown GSP in a 20 just sounds awful. If my puffer ever starts to grow any bigger ill get a bigger tank..

It's half true the fish can stop growing but it has to do with water quality not tank size but their organs don't so they end up dying

[–]beefmongerer 2 points3 points ago

My African cichlids do this. They get so involved that they fight over it, it's hilarious.

Eh, I have a figure 8, and he's the shyest fish I've ever known. He's all happy when he wants you to feed him, but goes and hides for a while after feeding.

I raised dwarf puffers for a while. Most difficult fish I've had but so rewarding with their intelligence. Watching them hunt baby snails and do little hover dances is so fun.

All three died in a short time though, one stopped eating and changing filter parts raised the flow too much catching the other two overnight :( Should have safety proofed the intake but it wasn't a problem for almost a year.

I do this sometimes. It is so funny!

[–]LostMyPassAgain 0 points1 point ago

Are you a fish?

[–]laser-show-15 1 point2 points ago

Of course, IAMA hatchetfish.

[–]newmansg 1 point2 points ago

I'm a bichir.

I like long burrows in the gravel.

[–]Z277Wolfe 0 points1 point ago

I did this with my tiger barbs and they went nuts but I would still enjoy having a cat

[–]atomfullerene 0 points1 point ago

I have a plastic pond full of minnows, and they will all chase from one side to the other in a big swarm just to get the glowy red thing. Gotta love em.

Protip: Don't just get a laser pointer, get a digital IR thermometer from a hardware store and take your tanks temperature while entertaining the fish!

UPBOAT.

My bf and I take laser pointers to Bass Pro and Cabela's and fuck with the fish in the giant tanks.
