Few points worth mentioning:

  1. Don't be afraid to resubmit discussion threads with certain topics. As our community grows people join who might have missed out the first time around.

  2. Discussions are what we came here for, encourage it! Don't downvote just because you disagree on best captain/episode/phaser type!

  3. Try not to explain away plot oversight or inconsistencies with "It's just a show", that's boring.

  4. Single-image meme-styled posts will be removed. Please post them to the Trek Memes and Trek ragecomic subreddits!

  5. We've got a new spoiler system. It will only be enforced on spoilers from the new movie (Anything featured in a trailer is fair game).

    Type: [Spoiler here](/spoiler).

    And you get: Spock lives!.

Why not include Worf as well?

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 48 points49 points ago

Self promoting your husband?

[–]Mrs_Worf 35 points36 points ago

Always

[–]Worfs_Son 35 points36 points ago

Mom!

[–]Engineer3227 13 points14 points ago

It's a family reunion! I brought a few kegs of blood wine!

I'm not related. I just like to party and fight. Is that good enough!?

[–]Worfs_Son 15 points16 points ago

Qapla'

[–]Maticus 10 points11 points ago

"Alexander, a warrior does not call random strangers his mother."

[–]Anm2k4 6 points7 points ago

Two years, I'll approve it

[–]fedv -3 points-2 points ago

You have 434 Karma as of 2:50pm CDT, Oct. 2, 2012.

I suspect that by 6:00pm CDT you will have ~1,500

Just a hunch though

[–]PenPenGuin 3 points4 points ago

[–]nanzinator 2 points3 points ago

Work is probably a copyright, all the others have been used for a long time.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 3 points4 points ago

Worf*

[–]nanzinator 2 points3 points ago

Wow can't believe I typed that, I'm not even going to edit haha.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

If Work was copyrighted....people would owe someone a shit load of money.

[–]tuxedohamm -2 points-1 points ago

Also, it appears they are going with a female-male-female-male pattern like we do for tropical storms/cyclones and the W occurs on the female position.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm crazy and didn't look at it close enough.

[–]arby11777 1 point2 points ago

The warm weather is without honor

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 75 points76 points ago

I can see it now. Winter storm Khan rolls in and we all go. KHAAAAAAAAAN! KHAAAAAAAAAAN!

[–]TimeZarg 6 points7 points ago

Or when Winter storm Q rolls in, we can do our best imitation of Picard yelling at Q.

[–]Vusys 7 points8 points ago

Perhaps we can punch Q like Sisko.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 3 points4 points ago

I will work on my Picard!

[–]cirrus42 8 points9 points ago

Came for this comment. Thread delivered. +1

[–]DoneRedditAlready 3 points4 points ago

if only we were naming tropical storms ... its a hurri-khaaaaan!!!

ill see myself out.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

[–]Hamlet7768 3 points4 points ago

Hell with the looks, I'll do it.

[–]TolstoysJudge 31 points32 points ago

Im terrified of Q. This storm will test us all.

[–]firex726 25 points26 points ago

I never really got why people keep saying Q is a bad guy, he was more like an internet troll.

Everything he does is for the lulz.

[–]Gellert 25 points26 points ago

I wouldn't even go so far as to call him a troll, he's more like a crazy teacher who has your best interests at heart but has a weird way of teaching you.

I mean, Picard would have gone through life believing that getting stabbed by a Nausicaan was a mistake. Starfleet would never have had an encounter with the borg that they survived to warn the Federation about the threat they pose. Worf would never have fullfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a merry man... ok maybe he kinda is.

[–]firex726 5 points6 points ago

IDK about teacher, his actions in Q Who do make it seems like he's there for an entertaining time.

[–]Jakedubbleya 5 points6 points ago

Pshh, Picard educated Q far more than Q educated picard.

[–]BrawlStrogg88 5 points6 points ago

...That's probably the best theory about the entire Q continuum there is to date.

[–]firex726 4 points5 points ago

Not sure about the whole Continuum, the rest of them did get pissed and strip him of his powers that one time.

But also there was that one that got so fed up with the boredom that became suicidal, so maybe all his antics is actually Q trying to keep his depression at bay.

[–]BrawlStrogg88 1 point2 points ago

Yeah but they basically played the "Oh yoou..." card on him!

They're basically 4chan and Reddit's proper trolls.

[–]firex726 4 points5 points ago

Well they did have that civil war and a baby.

Can you imagine the outcome of a Reddit/4chan child? It'd be like that Ripley clone wanting to die.

[–]BrawlStrogg88 1 point2 points ago

...I really didn't need to remember that scene, it freaked me out enough.

[–]firex726 3 points4 points ago

I'm here all night!

[–]HarryLillis -2 points-1 points ago

I wish Janeway had had a baby with Q. That would be awesome.

[–]shadyoaks 2 points3 points ago

they're like trolls and time lords rolled into one.

[–]BrawlStrogg88 1 point2 points ago

That and the fact any time the chap who plays 'Q' comes up anywhere else... i.e. Stargate, I can't help but think (out loud) "Bitch please, you don't need that damn ring of stone..."

[–]aksawyer 0 points1 point ago

Wait. John De Lancie was in Stargate?! WHERE???!!!! I MUST KNOW!

[–]BrawlStrogg88 0 points1 point ago

He plays a colonel aligned with the NID I believe.

[–]clgonsal 3 points4 points ago

100% agree. Q was a troll..

[–]r3v 1 point2 points ago

In internet troll with the ability to manipulate time and space? That's about as scary as it gets.

[–]firex726 1 point2 points ago

So does that mean he can actually reach out and punch people across the internet?

Dude needs to patent that shit.

[–]Fushigidane 1 point2 points ago

Think of the last internet troll that threatened you/r family, lively hood in some over-the-top unimaginable way. Some random guy on the largest highway you can think of yelling profanities at you to gain your attention.

Now imagine if he actually had the power to make that happen.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

O yeah, the Federation almost being destroyed by one Borg ship is so funny.

[–]firex726 6 points7 points ago

If you recall he wasn't TRYING to destroy the Federation, if you're referring to Farpoint it was just for the lulz.

Q is a nigh omnipotent god, if he wanted to see the Federation destroyed he would only need to snap his fingers, literally.

He also did help them out several times as well; not the behavior one would expect from a real adversary.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

Ummm, what about the time he sent the Enterprise to the Delta Quadrant and the Borg found out where they were from and went on pursuit of the Enterprise. Which lead them the the Alpha and Beta Quadrant which lead to Picard being Locutus?

[–]firex726 3 points4 points ago

Then you get into temporal causality since the Borg were already on Earth from that one Enterprise episode and Contact.

Still, Q saved their asses once Picard admitted they were't da bomb.

EDIT: Also it begs the question why did the Enterprise D not have information on the strange and advanced cybernetic lifeforms in their computers when they initially encountered the Borg while handling Farpoint?

When cataloging them why did the computer not be all like "Hay this new guys look an awful lot like this one off encounter a few centuries ago."

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 0 points1 point ago

Well still....he is a jerk most of the time.

[–]firex726 0 points1 point ago

Oh most certainly, but being a jerk does not a bad guy make.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 0 points1 point ago

Well the Borg did cut a part of the Enterprise killing a few people.

[–]firex726 0 points1 point ago

As did a number of neutral and natural disaster events.

[–]Lord_Illidan 1 point2 points ago

When did the Enterprise D handle the Borg at Farpoint? They first met them in the episode Q, Who.

[–]firex726 1 point2 points ago

Oh yea, you're right, but the point still stands.

Why would a compute whose main mission is exploration and meeting new life, not be like HEY these guys look the same!

[–]HarryLillis 0 points1 point ago

Is Enterprise any good? I watched the first episode until the introduction that had soft rock music came on and I couldn't tolerate the song so I had to turn it off. But now with Netflix I can just fast forward through that if the rest is worth watching, is it?

[–]firex726 1 point2 points ago

Did you like shows like BSG and DS9, which had over arcing plot lines for the season?

Sort of S2 and most of S3&4 develop one. It's arguably worth it just to see Shran get pissed off for owing "the pinkskins" more and more favors. S1 tried to have one, but it kinda fizzled out and was forgotten about.

There was still quite a few Monster-of-the-week episodes though, and don't try and hold true to the canon too much.

[–]HarryLillis 0 points1 point ago

I haven't seen those shows. I suppose I'll have to check it out just to see if I do like them. Thanks!

[–]Turnshroud 1 point2 points ago

I have to agree with you. He4's an annooying ass of an immortal troll, but I do like him as a semi-antagonist

He is an odd fellow though

[–]firex726 4 points5 points ago

Yea, I think he'd be more like Chaotic Neutral.

He'll help or hurt depending on what gives him more entertainment.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

And that the Borg don't meet us because of it.

[–]nermid 0 points1 point ago

It's kind of silly to assume the Borg wouldn't have ever made it to the Alpha Quadrant, or that Voyager wouldn't have given them hints about what was there.

If anything, the fact that Q introduced us allowed us to fight them early, when they hadn't assimilated anything too huge, like the changelings.

Also, it allowed us to help them keep the 8472 from steamrolling across our galaxy, so ultimately Q saved all sentient life.

It's all a matter of perspective.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 0 points1 point ago

Good point.

[–]AngrySquirrel 1 point2 points ago

A trial for the ages.

[–]arby11777 1 point2 points ago

Mon capitane, surely you won't care if a few of you humans freeze to death?

[–]emperorskeeter 30 points31 points ago

That's all cool, but isn't it "Gandalf"? Is my geek-fu weak in some area?

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 19 points20 points ago

People including me have asked the Weather channel people why it is misspelled. Some think it is to avoid copyright.

[–]RunSilentRunUpdate 16 points17 points ago

Original spelling IIRC from Norse poetry (inspiration for many of Tolkiens's naming schemes) was Gandolf.

[–]anarchistica 9 points10 points ago

Actually, the original spelling was Gandalfr.

Maybe it's a mix of Ganondorf and Gandalf? :P

[–]bugdog 7 points8 points ago

In this case, TWC is claiming it's from " A character in a 1896 fantasy novel in a pseudo-medieval countryside." The book is The Well at the World's End: a tale by William Morris.

Still, I think it's wrong.

[–]Advacar 8 points9 points ago

Yup, it's them getting around the copyright. The Wikipedia page for Gandalf says that "The Well at World's End" directly influenced Tolkien.

[–]romulus4444 3 points4 points ago

Everyone's still gonna call it "Gandalf" though, and be thinking of the Tolkein character.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 2 points3 points ago

O_O...How could I forget that...

[–]Im_not_bob 10 points11 points ago

Damnit Q, stop interfering!

[–]KazamaSmokers 7 points8 points ago

Threat Category: Euclid

[–]vaakku 5 points6 points ago

Nice! There's also an old finnish god of thunder, Ukko

[–]RunSilentRunUpdate 4 points5 points ago

I feel like Khan is mostly a response to Hurricane Kirk (who did not live long and prosper.)

[–]kirkkismet 3 points4 points ago

that was bullshit :[ i wanted the hurricane with my name to be a katrina level storm. instead, all i got was a trek joke

[–]Hamlet7768 2 points3 points ago

Better than the one hurricane with your name devastating large swaths of land and killing hundreds.

[–]ssg115 1 point2 points ago

I fail to see how that isn't better. Think of all the lines you could use, and all the time "rock you like a hurricane" would be appropriate

[–]ctetc2007 3 points4 points ago

They misspelled KHAAAAAAAAAAAN!

[–]Tico117 3 points4 points ago

Every guy who delivers the weather during the storm should be required to say it like this. None of this "Khan" business.

[–]Ooftyman 3 points4 points ago

They misspelled Gandalf...

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

It is to avoid copyright.

[–]Fredo699 0 points1 point ago

What're they gonna sue the creator of the hurricane?

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 2 points3 points ago

Winter storm but they would sue TWC or NBC.

[–]TimeZarg 0 points1 point ago

Indeed. People are assholes nowadays.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

The Hobbit hole? It is a bar in L.A. (I think) and the people that own J.R.R. Tolkien rights. Were gonna sue them unless they paid a fee. Ian Mckellen said he would pay the fee. I was so sadden when I heard that.

[–]farmingdale 1 point2 points ago

so there is a small but finite chance that in my life, I will be marooned somewhere worrying about snow burying me alive and scream out "khannnnn!!!!!"

Alrighty.

[–]ShaddamMCMLXXXVIII 5 points6 points ago

I have to ask...is there a Redditor out there with some sort of weather altering device?

[–]firex726 3 points4 points ago

We're everywhere.

Seriously, we're like Rule 34; if there is a job, some Redditor has a connection to it.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 2 points3 points ago

Make it rain in Western Montana?

[–]DungeonMasterofLife 2 points3 points ago

Are you sure you want to do that?

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

We have forest fires! Yes!

[–]DungeonMasterofLife 3 points4 points ago

The militia is currently working on vanquishing the fire elementals in that area. The druids in Whitehall have been alerted and will attempt to change the weather pattern for you. A cleric has been tasked with appealing to Erastil for assistance.

[–]TimeZarg 0 points1 point ago

Wait, there are enough people in Western Montana to notice forest fires? I'm shocked.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 0 points1 point ago

-.- Remember what area you are dissing....lol. It is very important to Star Trek.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't doubt it.

[–]seeingeyefrog 1 point2 points ago

Well sort of. I've been trying to get my Hurricanes to wipe out Washington DC for years, but the damn things always miss.

[–]Advacar 1 point2 points ago

I had one but some bookah stole it from me.

[–]kgriggs75 2 points3 points ago

The sanctuary is covered as well, Helen Magnus.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 0 points1 point ago

I never have watched it. So I didn't even see that.

[–]schroob 2 points3 points ago

Was there anything on the site explaining why they've decided to name big winter storms? Guess they are underwhelmed with "snowmageddon" and "snowpocalypse"?

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

They wanted to name storms because we name Hurricanes. Plus NOAA, was going to do it but The Weather Channel jumped on it.

[–]Eslader 0 points1 point ago

They aren't the first. WLUK in Green Bay has been naming snow storms for years.

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 0 points1 point ago

That is local. These storms would be huge. Snowtober and Snowmageddon size.

[–]CaptMorgan74 2 points3 points ago

Q !

[–]AliasUndercover 0 points1 point ago

Sensationalistic claptrap.

[–]arby11777 2 points3 points ago

There should be a storm named Quark. "Maybe I won't freeze your pipes for, say, 3 bars of gold pressed latinum?" slow toothy grin

[–]farmingdale 0 points1 point ago

wouldn't the orion syndicate be a more apt name?

[–]aksawyer 0 points1 point ago

A lot of good names on that list.

Caesar

Gandalf(they misspelled it though)

Draco(I'll assume they either meant the constellation or the dragon from Dragonheart ^ _ ^ )

LUNA!!!!!!!

and of course, good old Khan and Q!

[–]SpaceOdysseus 4 points5 points ago

It's all nerdy goodness. Orko, Euclid, Nemo, Luna, Draco, Iago, Rocky. It turns out meteorologists have some personality after all.

I kiid, I kiid.

[–]TimeZarg 1 point2 points ago

If I were in a region that experience two of the first winter storms of the season (Athena and Brutus), I'd take the opportunity to shout 'E tu, Brute?!'

[–]neanderthalman 1 point2 points ago

Aren't winter storms a little, you know, localized? I mean, some areas might need a few more letters....

What's the criteria for deciding when a storm is named? TV ratings?

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

I can't remember all but it is like they have to be big sized ones. Like covering 5 states and 5 feet of snow type huge.

[–]LordRavenholm 1 point2 points ago

Oh hell yes!

[–]blueskin 1 point2 points ago

I feel bad the Q one took me a second to get. I will now attempt to justify it with a statement about how I clicked from the front page without seeing the subreddit.

[–]TimeZarg 2 points3 points ago

It's okay. . .I thought I was clicking into r/science at first.

[–]yesca18 1 point2 points ago

Gandolf :)

[–]intravenus_de_milo 1 point2 points ago

Kinda cute, but I think it would in poor taste if Gandolf destroyed your home or killed your family, much less Nemo. "Mommy why?!" indeed.

[–]MikeTheSpike 2 points3 points ago

Winter storms don't really destroy homes and kill families.

[–]wadsworthsucks 1 point2 points ago

"Dammit Q, stop creating whiteouts and snowdrifts!"

[–]Eternitras 0 points1 point ago

They misspelled Gandalf. :'(

[–]DjKaiserCharles444[S] 1 point2 points ago

It is to avoid copyright.

[–]DalekBen 1 point2 points ago

Not to mention L.

[–]MikeTheSpike -1 points0 points ago

Why the hell are they naming winter storms?

[–]TimeZarg 2 points3 points ago

Because it's far more interesting to say 'Winter storm Q' rather than 'random winter storm'. People get to associate it with a name. It's marketing.

[–]MikeTheSpike -1 points0 points ago

Exactly. Marketing.

[–]shivvvv 1 point2 points ago

i always wondered what happened to the cool people at the weather channel.

remember when they used to just play boring weather forecasts with cool music? that was probably the first time i ever heard phish.

[–]rexor0717 1 point2 points ago

Also, some Mahvel players with Magnus and Virgil

[–]drakino 0 points1 point ago

I was watching the segment this morning at the hotel. They specifically mentioned the Q entry is not from Star Trek or Bond.

Q: The Broadway Express subway line in New York City.

http://www.weather.com/news/winter-storm-names-20121001

[–]NCC_1701 0 points1 point ago

For some reason I dont feel about about wishing for 17 winter storms...

[–]Diskutant 0 points1 point ago

I don't geht why this is in StarTrek, it could be anywhere http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genghis_Khan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_(James_Bond) let alone all the other letters

[–]Dem0n5 -3 points-2 points ago

They should have used Queu for Q. Then people would finally learn how to fucking spell Qeueu. Educate the masses!

[–]madcowbomber 8 points9 points ago

It's spelled "queue". /grammar nazi :P

[–]Dem0n5 2 points3 points ago

no way =O

The period goes inside the quotation marks in this instance. "Queue."

[–]TimeZarg 1 point2 points ago

He had best put some lotion on that burn.

[–]farmingdale -1 points0 points ago

or else it gets the hose again.
