With my creationist friends... (us13.memecdn.com)

I'd just like to say, that is an exceptionally high quality GIF.
Also, please prepare yourself for the oncoming shitstorm of "This is why Reddit hates r/atheism" replies.
[–]Rizuken 11 points12 points13 points 1 day ago
I would make fun of someone who believed the earth is flat, its just as retarded.
[–]giranda 4 points5 points6 points 1 day ago
Exactly, just because people believe in it doesn't make it any more factually valid.
[–]sloppyjoes7 -3 points-2 points-1 points 23 hours ago
Then stop saying "most scientists" believe this or that. Atheists use this argument nearly every time they try to defend an idea.
[–]11nausea11 5 points6 points7 points 22 hours ago
Because scientists use the scientific method to find a non-biased answer to a question... It isn't true because they believe it, they believe it because it is true. So when someone says "scientists believe," it means the proof is in the pudding, dawg.
[–]giranda 0 points1 point2 points 18 hours ago
And if they do more experiments and tests and prove themselves wrong their not afraid to admit it because science is never an exact science.
[–]sloppyjoes7 -1 points0 points1 point 11 hours ago
Argumentum ad populum.
You have such extreme bias, you'll use Argumentum ad populum, even knowing it's a fallacy, "because it is true."
[–]11nausea11 0 points1 point2 points 8 hours ago
Saying the people who conducted research on something and their peers agree on the witnessed results are NOT argumentum ad populum. It is not appeal to the masses, there are no one's opinions involved, and you confirmed you are unaware how the scientific method is utilized.
[–]sloppyjoes7 -1 points0 points1 point 6 hours ago
you confirmed you are unaware how the scientific method is utilized.
So, science is a Democracy?
No. No it's not. Your understanding of science is flawed.
[–]11nausea11 0 points1 point2 points 2 hours ago
Okay, let me try one more time. When someone says "scientists think" something, they don't mean to imply it is real because scientists think it, they are implying because something is real, a majority of scientists are supporting it, as evidence shows it is true. If you cannot understand that, then welcome to my ignore list, you are to stupid to fix.

If making fun of creationists stupid fucking stupidity is what makes me hateful
Then call me Hate personified
[–]kingplayer 0 points1 point2 points 19 hours ago
Anyone who openly denies science deserves to be made fun of.

I mean, this IS why Reddit hates r/atheism. Sure, there are stupid people who get butthurt when their intelligence is threatened, but do you honestly think that's the majority of Reddit? Now I realize that this is r/atheism and expressing our disbelief is entire the point of being here, but please... consider the following:
The thing that makes being an atheist great isn't that we happen to be "right" about one specific aspect of human existence, even if it's an extremely important one. The thing that makes being an atheist great is that it's just one example of how we strive to embrace facts and not just ideas that feel right. That's the nut of why it's so easy for posts here to seem petty. I'm willing to bet that damn near everyone holds at least one belief or opinion that the rest of us would consider "childish" or "contradictory". It just isn't necessarily a religious belief. Nobody goes out of their way to gather in groups and mock our weird phobias, or our delusions about our love life, or our unrealistic career expectations, and they certainly don't feel entitled to make sweeping character judgements based on those things. So when we go from "your beliefs are wrong" to "you're lifestyle is wrong because you're stupid and afraid" it seems remarkably hypocritical. We're stupid and afraid of things, too, and the rest of Reddit knows that. It's obnoxious as fuck to be around someone who comments on other people's flaws but never reflects on their own shit. Why do you think the Catholic Church is so annoying? AW SNAP!
EDIT: Just want to clarify I'm not knocking this post in particular, or even all posts like this in general. It just seemed like a good context to say something I've been thinking about lately.
[–]complex_reduction 1 point2 points3 points 19 hours ago
The purpose of this subreddit is that virtually anything goes, so long as it's relevant to "atheism, agnosticism and secular living".
I think the reason Reddit hates /r/atheism so much is that they seem to misunderstand the purpose of this subreddit. They seem to believe that /r/atheism is supposed to be populated purely by philosophy PHD's discussing the meaning of life over self-posts and tea and that anything "childish" or "immature" has no place here. This is clearly incorrect and clearly reflected in the rules of the subreddit.
It's obnoxious as fuck to be around someone who comments on other people's flaws but never reflects on their own shit.
I do not believe that atheism is similar to the things you have described - "... our weird phobias, or our delusions about our love life, or our unrealistic career expectations ...".
Reddit (western society as a whole?) is plagued with the notion of false balance; that atheism and other "beliefs" stand on equal ground logically and that fact and fiction should stand in equal merit so long as nobody is "offended". This is all demonstrably false. Whether or not somebody elects to retain theism or embrace atheism, a rational person, even a theist, would agree that when it comes to reason and logic, no religion or similar understanding based on presumption or "faith" has any grounds whatsoever to stand upon.
I do not believe atheists to be "superior" to theists, but I do believe that coming to an atheistic or evidence based conclusion is the only logical course of action. I believe that anybody who claims atheists, scientists, etc are "arrogant" etc for saying as much is wrong. I do not believe it is arrogant to come to a conclusion by evidence rather than faith, nor do I believe it is arrogant to claim fact should take precedence over fiction.
Religion, phobias, love, hope - none of these things are based on logic. Atheism is. I don't believe that you can draw a parallel, for example, between somebody with a phobia criticising a religious person for having illogical beliefs, because organised religion is demonstrably false and continued faith in the face of that evidence is purely elective on the part of the theist. People cannot control their phobias.

People can and should be able to post whatever they want here. I'm simply suggesting that:
1.) Being correct and being a dick aren't mutually exclusive.
2.) If you post content you know will offend someone, you give up the right to act confused when they don't like you anymore. We at r/atheism seem to have trouble with that concept sometimes.
3.) Being right about one specific issue doesn't give you the right to make generalizations about the character or intelligence of someone who disagrees with you. I think there's a lot of oversimplification of people who embrace religion. Certainly they're wrong, but on an individual level we don't know why they've come to the wrong conclusion. Why make assumptions? They might have very complex motivations for living the way they do, and when we write them off collectively as "stupid" or "scared" it's dismissive and condescending. Nobody likes being talked down to.
That's all I'm gettin' at.
[–]complex_reduction 0 points1 point2 points 18 hours ago
Agreed completely. That being said, many people apparently perceive a claim to truth as being inherently dickish, so what are people supposed to do?
Mockery and parody are well established and historic forms of criticism. Atheists and theists are, ultimately, at odds with one another. I would say that making fun of each other through animated GIF's lets off steam that might otherwise be channeled into, say, burning people alive at stakes, etc.
I did not mean to imply that theists are stupid or scared, just willfully ignorant, which while often a symptom of stupidity or fear, do not necessarily originate there.
[–]n3kr0n 0 points1 point2 points 19 hours ago
Nah its more like:
he calls them hes "friends"
he hangs out with them
he makes fun of them (and you can probably spot the difference between the usual nagging among friends and this gif)
All three combined make for a fucking stupid retard, doesnt need to be atheism vs creationism.
[–]PeruTheGnar 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
This. I agree that r/athiesm may seem like a bunch of assholes, but sometimes we just have to be dicks. Just like how we'd be dicks to those people who take up 2 parking spots. When one of my creationist buddies tries to tell me that god invented cancer so they could feel his love more, I let them fucking have it.
Edit: on my phone can't edit; *created, not invented ha

"That which is ridiculous by definition subject to ridicule."
[–]11nausea11 0 points1 point2 points 22 hours ago
I agree. Sadly, as this world is not the result of divine intervention, it is not all wonderful and magical and able of only good. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it shouldn't be lied about to make it feel better. We cannot solve problems that were built on lies, or else we can't really be sure what the problem actually is.
[–]JackRawlinson 0 points1 point2 points 22 hours ago
Why on earth would you befriend loonies?
[–]11nausea11 1 point2 points3 points 22 hours ago
I would assume they were high school friends, as us oldies tend to move on from people who are crazy. In high school it seems more important to have those social peer groups established so you put up with people's BS more.

I'm not sure what just happened but I think I'm Japanese now?
[–]CelaDor42 3 points4 points5 points 1 day ago
WHO THE FUCK KNOWS CREATIONISTS?! I guess things are different here in Canada. Both creationism AND creationists are mythological.
[–]manofscience42 1 point2 points3 points 19 hours ago
That is exactly what I think whenever I hear a creationist refer to "evolitonists". WTF, did I miss a meeting? Did believers in the theory of evolution suddenly organize while I wasn't looking?
[–]superpastaaisle 1 point2 points3 points 19 hours ago
Yeah, but chances are you have no creationist friends. Well, why would you.
Although, why would you have any friends.
[–]AFewSecondsAgoDouche -1 points0 points1 point 19 hours ago
Don't lie, OP, nobody likes a reclusive, circlejerking dickhead like yourself.
Your closest "friends" are the angsty teenage cunts on /r/atheism and that doesn't add up to much.
[–]manofscience42 -1 points0 points1 point 19 hours ago
I love this! I have been trying to figure out the best way to capture that exact quote for a gif and have never gotten it right. You sir totally nailed it. I was so excited to see this and upvote it that I almost missed THIS HAPPENING.
[–]Colawar -12 points-11 points-10 points 1 day ago
Prick.
[–]Edwardfy9[S] 6 points7 points8 points 1 day ago
Due to me laughing when someone said: "God showed his love in his creation of the bubonic plague?" I think i am pretty justified.
[–]shugr2th 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
You put that quotation mark on the wrong side of the sentence there, bud. Question mark after the quotation, otherwise it reads out like the quote itself is a question.
