        What I loved about Halo 3 were the crazy private matches. So many insane levels and game types. The best part was that all you had to do was play in public lobbies for a few minutes and eventually you'd start getting invites to private games. Does that still happen?

          Yep, even in college the most beloved game-type is the one I made when I was like, 15 called Kenyan.

          *Zombie gametype: 1 zombie is poor-camo and low health with a sword. Also can run FUCKING FAST and jump with low gravity (annoying but it adds a challenge to the zombies)

          Non-zombie players get a regular pistol and a plasma pistol. Regular pistol is a 1 shot zombie kill and plasma takes about 2 but aim carefully, they're fast as a Kenyan track star!

          Secondary zombies run/jump the same as alpha but have no camo

          Last man standing gets a bit of overshield (making it take 2 sword hits to kill unless from behind) and gets insta-kill with the pistols. Which means that the plasma is much more effective, but remember the shot moves slower and at long ranges the zombies can dodge your bullets (so you pretty much have to aim ahead of the zombies to hit them!)

          Very very fun gametype, never gets old. It was actually a popular custom gametype for a few months and everybody talked about it, but nobody believed I was the one that originally thought of it :(

          We did the exact same thing to the dot at my house, except we used BR instead of pistols. Another friend did the same at his house, no camo for the alpha, but shotguns for the players. Another did something similar except zombie had shotguns and 250% speed.. All sorts of fun variants on this.

              The thing is, back when it was at its peak in popularity, you could play a bunch of matchmaking games, and then find some ridiculous custom game among your recent players. I don't know about you, but wasting time in dumb custom games was at least half the fun of Halo 3!

              It's 5 years old with 2 sequels out & 1 coming up very soon - I'd expect nothing more than 20k peak. What matters is that you have enough people playing for you to get into a game fairly quickly, anything above 10kish players is really nothing more than just a number & shouldn't mean anything to you.

                  I've been in gametypes with 26 people [see: social skirmish]. It's not difficult to wait 10-15 minutes for one set of games to end & then you join up with that & don't quit, you'll just keep getting matched with pretty much the save 'wave' of people.

                                During senior year of highschool we convinced our band teacher to let us set up four xboxes in the main room, and we networked all of them together and played on the massive 80in lcd tv screen that we had tricked the school into buying us the year before. We had a few smaller tv's around for the other ones for when the room would inevitably fill up at lunch once word got out what we were doing. Even the vice principal would show up occasionally. His favorite match type was 8 man juggernaut rounds.

                                I skipped almost every class period that year to go scream obscenities at my band teacher and other classmates who also managed to ditch. I can't believe we all managed to graduate.

                                      Don't forget about the superior ranking system! Remember when rank 25 was "pro" level? Then they changed it to the mid-late 40 ranks?

                                      What about the clan system? An extra 100 people to your friends list and an extra bonus of actual clan matches? Why didn't they ever bring this back? They got rid of it because of the modders... Now what's the excuse?

                                            Halo 3 was such a great game. The community itself was amazing. Late at night a few friends would decide to play a custom game and it became show an tell of custom games. Random people joining all night, having a full party with people waiting to play. I miss it, using forge in hopes to show off games at the Friday night customs. I hope halo 4 can bring that back

                                                Ugh. Halo 3 was such a classic game. I remember those crazy battles on Valhalla and Sandtrap that came down to the wire.

                                                I was the best warthog driver in my group of friends--so many wheelman trophies! I never left a man behind in my years as a driver (well, at least not without getting killed myself).

                                                Even the campaign had some really epic moments. I hope Halo 4 brings it all back.

While a map was loading I would look at other peoples fireshares for some cool pictures or maps, while putting all of my coolest pictures in mine. Actually got I think like 2,000 downloads on one, felt pretty awesome.

When it was in its peak you couldn't play 3 matchmaking matches in a row without receiving a Custom Game invite. Also, Bungie were so talkative and colaborative with the community you couldn't help but love them.

Halo 3 was awesome, but at that point I was starting to move away from console games, so I didn't play it as much. Halo 2, on the other hand, consumed my life for at least a couple years.                                                                                                                                             Man Halo 3 was the SHIT. When I get really old, it's probably going to be remembered as my GoldenEye (I'm a bit too young to have experienced it, but from the sounds of it, it reminds me a lot of the fun party-play Halo had). I've sold my Xbox, and Halo is a long past chapter of my life, but I still retain the opinion, that Halo 3 is just one of the best party games of all time. Seriously. The customization options for gamemodes were just immense.

Every installment is fantastic and extremely polished. The campaigns actually follow a story and get as much attention as multiplayer. Also, theater mode and forge. Halo is the most feature-rich and complete franchise IMO.

                                                                                                                                                                  Halo is like the Plato of Console FPS, others in the genre have a tendency to be like footnotes or "Halo + X". Regenerating health, low health maximums, limited number of weapons carried, and the controle scheme are all pretty much 100% standard in the Console FPS genre and really were first put together in (at least a popular form, I'm a bit young to remember much before Halo that wasn't popular enough to pass the test of time) Halo:CE. I mean, Halo:CE put the Xbox on the map. But now step back and imagine if Halo had originally been released for the Mac like it was supposed to be, we'd be in an alternate universe in which /r/gaming doesn't make posts about "LOL MAC GAMING" but rather "DAE REMEMBER THE XBOX?"

                                                                                                                                                                            Pretty sure a lot of console games do this, otherwise they would be too hard. I think they call it "magnetism". Analog sticks just pale in comparison to the precision of a mouse, lots of players will argue that this is not the case, but that's because they probably don't notice that their aim is being assisted and their bullets don't travel in straight lines.
