Living in Columbus, I always get confused when people make a comment about Ohio being nothing but farmers. Then I remember that if I drive 30 minutes in any direction, I'll end up in either a corn field or a soy bean field. After that point I remember that despite the plethora of farms, Ohio is still the 7th most populated state in the US and has the 10th highest population density of any state in the US. Apparently the United States is pretty much just vast tracts of empty land.

[–]danisaacs 12 points13 points ago

Check the satalite image of the earth at night. Most everything west of the Mississippi and east of the Rockies is dark. :)

[–]ilovenotohio 2 points3 points ago

Don't forget about the random corn fields peppered inside the city limits (here's looking at you, Upper Arlington, Reynoldsburg, Hilliard, Grove City, etc).

[–]Millgasm 1 point2 points ago

well put, i never put that into perspective

[–]chimerauprising 117 points118 points ago

Don't forget the Wright Brothers. They discovered a new way to get out of Ohio.

[–]ZeroCool1 30 points31 points ago

I'm pretty sure Ohio has the largest amount of airports per square mile and therefore the cheapest lessons--this all being due to the Wright Brothers. Pretty easy to get a pilots license. You might notice that many of the astronauts also have a pilots license. This has always been my logic.

Upon investigating my claim: Looks like i'm wrong: http://www.geographylists.com/list19a.html.

[–]TheShrinkingGiant 40 points41 points ago

Hey. We're talking shit about Ohio so we can all feel better about ourselves. Get with the fucking program.

[–]woodyscissors 26 points27 points ago

Our marching band is fuckin awesome though

[–]TheShrinkingGiant 4 points5 points ago

Buddy, you don't have to tell me. (used to live on 6th, on cloudy days we could hear football games)

(in Westerville now)

[–]woodyscissors 3 points4 points ago

No way I'm in westerville

[–]TheShrinkingGiant 8 points9 points ago

Oh shit. Are you my wife?

[–]woodyscissors 21 points22 points ago

Is your wife a high school boy?

[–]TheShrinkingGiant 15 points16 points ago

Only on certain Saturdays. We have a complicated sex life.

Do you go to Westerville North? Because where we live now, we can hear THOSE football games.

[–]harvest3155 6 points7 points ago

isn't Westerville north a bunch of Gaylords?

[–]GrandmaTITMilk 0 points1 point ago

Best damn band in the land!

[–]_connor_ 1 point2 points ago

i play in an ohio high school marching band. I'm playing in the macys thanksgiving day parade this year.

[–]suspiciously_helpful 1 point2 points ago

Looking at that list, I bet you're still tops on airports per square mile per capita. The #1-#5 states are all east coast.

[–]jimbolauski 2 points3 points ago

Also Patterson another dayton resident who invented the pop top lid, so he could drink more to make it bearable.

[–]jimbolauski -1 points0 points ago

To bad they are closing cedar point.

They want to keep the kids away from Sandusky.

[–]Dinkleburg238 59 points60 points ago

You know what we do for fun in my hometown in Ohio. We go to the other towns...

[–]Cyberslasher 14 points15 points ago

Other towns states.

[–]Dinkleburg238 0 points1 point ago

Sadly at least once a year me and my friends take a 3 hour road trip to PA for a weekend for no reason other than we're sick of Ohio. Would do it more but it costs too much.

[–]Anonymous3891 4 points5 points ago

Yeah. Rural Ohio nightlife involves exceptionally shitty bars or going to the nearest city with at least 50k people.

[–]StymieGray 3 points4 points ago

  1. cornfield
  2. old beater
  3. lights off
  4. play tag

[–]i_h8_everyone 1 point2 points ago

In my rural Ohio town everyone hangs out at Walmart (or in the Walmart parking lot) in the evening.

[–]StymieGray 2 points3 points ago

All of Putnam might as well be 1 town.

[–]annabear 1 point2 points ago

I have never heard anything more true than this. I grew up near Columbus and my idea of fun in high school was driving around in other cities/towns.

[–]xXbrennanXx 2 points3 points ago

In my hometown in Ohio, all we do is drugs...lots and lots of drugs. They're surprisingly cheap too

[–]Drlongbong 0 points1 point ago

Living in NE Ohio I can agree with this. For fun we have to drive 30 minutes either East or West to do something or go get something to eat. = (

[–]Aaroon42 34 points35 points ago

It's an over compensation thing. We produce the Wright Brothers (well, one of them at least) and then North Carolina is the one that tries to take credit by putting "First in Flight" on their license plates. So, naturally, we take it to the next level by strapping as many of out residents as we can to giant rockets and fling them into outer space. Kinda a "how 'bout them apples" approach.

[–]Ikimasen 10 points11 points ago

I mean, we didn't just totally snake it, they really did come here to fly. Anyway, some guy in a Neil Young biography said Ohio is just like North Carolina, only cold. We should really be buddies.

[–]Millgasm 11 points12 points ago

State friendship accepted.

[–]Aaroon42 3 points4 points ago

Yes, they went there because it was barren, windy and unpopulated... congrats.

All joking aside, I have no feud with your state (even though it killed Stephen Colbert's father: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2211318/Stephen-Colbert-opens-Oprah-horror-losing-father-teen-brothers-plane-crash-10-years-old.html )

No, the state Ohio really hates is Michigan. Not because of football either. Mostly because they drive like fucking idiots and if they want to drive anywhere outside the state, they have to come through us. (Note: No offense to people from the upper peninsula, we have no beef with you; and let's be honest, you're basically Canadians anyway.)

[–]ItsNeverSunnyInCleve 4 points5 points ago

we can be called North-er Carolina.

[–]Jeff_E_Popp 0 points1 point ago

They only went to NC because it is the closest place with a good open hill. There are so few hills in Ohio suitable for the work that they were doing. The only hills they could find in their area were covered in trees.

[–]mburke6 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, but we have a Neil Armstrong on the moon and a Wright Flyer on our quarter.

[–]GreyWalker -1 points0 points ago

As a citizen of NC, I do not see the sense in the feud. The first flight was in North Carolina at Kitty Hawk. Credit can be given to Ohio for being home to the Wright Brothers, but the event did not occur there. By all means put "Home of the first pilot" on your license plate.

[–]Deconceptualist 16 points17 points ago

What's even better about this question is that it was Stephen Colbert asking congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones.

[–]bittersaint 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, I knew this was from something.

[–]Beezo514 0 points1 point ago

I miss her. She was my representative.

[–]jjungsch 0 points1 point ago

Rip. A great politician and better person. I know she was a organ doner and a friend of my family received a transplant right after she died. They keep the identity of donors confidential, so I don't know exactly who saved my friend's life, but I do know Tubbs Jones is the type of person we need more of.

[–]Hrodebert 30 points31 points ago

So in other words, Ohio produces brilliant minds and athletes.

[–]Its_all_good_in_DC 24 points25 points ago

I'm originally from Ohio and I miss it at times, mostly because all of my family is there. I did move away for job reasons, but it does make me sad that my daughter will never live there.

For all the haters out there, Ohio has the most astronauts because it used to be the silicon valley of the early 1900s. Here is a list of inventions coming from Dayton alone.

Also, 2 MLB teams (1st MLB team in history), 2 NFL teams, 6 presidents.

[–]ItsNeverSunnyInCleve 7 points8 points ago

The NFL got it's start in Ohio. That's kinda cool.

[–]fewdea 2 points3 points ago

The Reds were the first team in pro baseball too

[–]swinston79 10 points11 points ago

We count the Browns as a Pro team?

[–]wyvernx02 2 points3 points ago

No.

[–]GrandmaTITMilk 0 points1 point ago

They are getting there....kinda

[–]Millgasm 6 points7 points ago

First ever white wine in North America came from Cincy.

[–]Jeff_E_Popp 2 points3 points ago

Also MLS, NBA, and NHL

[–]Supermomma 1 point2 points ago

The yo-yo?! Awesome!

[–]TheTalentedAmateur 0 points1 point ago

Don't forget that we invented cornhole, developed rules, and formed cornhole leagues at local bars for weekend entertainment.

[–]cleffyowns 12 points13 points ago

Ohio has Nelson Ledges Quarry Park, which hosts so many (hippie) music festivals like GratefulFest and Badfish. There's drugs everywhere. Such an awesome place to visit for a few days and camp out if you're into such things.

[–]jamesandlily_forever 0 points1 point ago

I used to go to Nelson's ledges all the time. My dad would bring rope and we would repel down the rocks (illegally...) So much fun though.

[–]Weft_ 0 points1 point ago

I lived in Nelson my whole life. I've only been to the Nelson Ledges four times. One time when I was little my father took me and my brother when we were young, once when I was in Bio class in High School and I had to catch bugs, third time when I took my girlfriend there and lastly I took a field trip there for my Earth Dynamics class in College.

Our little town got invaded by Juggalos three times, I was on vacation each time it happened so I didn't encounter any of them.

All in all its a cool little place, but there is always way to many drugs and druggie everywhere.

[–]SchaBaby 22 points23 points ago

What it is?

[–]serosis 1 point2 points ago

I know right?

[–]utoniumx 0 points1 point ago

i was about to say "did no one notice this?"

[–]harvest3155 8 points9 points ago

People raised in Ohio leave, but move back when they have kids.

[–]dreamingwetly 7 points8 points ago

That's because we see what's out there and we're like "eh, I like it here."

[–]SonOfDenny 9 points10 points ago

I grew up in Ohio and just recently moved to Michigan. I find that people who dislike Ohio haven't been to many other states. Ohio, like many places, is what you make it. There are tons of things to do in this state. Sure it isn't super sunny year round but it has a little to offer for everyone. Like water? Plenty of rivers and lakes. Like adventure? Some pretty nice parks throughout the state. Like culture? Columbus has a ton going on. Sports? Got plenty of that going on from high school to professional levels. All in all I miss Ohio and in the end it is what you make it.

[–]Goldin 6 points7 points ago

My dad was an aerospace engineer from Ohio.

I work in education, and I believe 100% that the high rate of astronauts from this state was because of the superior educational system they had in the 50's and 60's (Edit: And 40's...).

It was a system focused on what we now call STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

We can joke that they are astronauts because they are bored and want to leave. However, Ohio had what people like Neil deGrasse Tyson are now striving to re-obtain.

So, my advice is to give credit where credit is due, work on reclaiming what we once had, and apply it to our plans for the future.

[–]okthisisgettingridic 2 points3 points ago

I'm stealing this! -a fellow Ohioan

[–]Drlongbong 1 point2 points ago

you must go to U of Akron

[–]teharchitect 38 points39 points ago

Everywhere I go, when I tell people I am from Ohio they sigh and say "Damn bro that sucks I'm sorry" I mean where do these people think I live? Surrounded by miles of cornfields? I live in Akron between Cleveland and Canton, there is plenty to do and lots of fun times to be had...it's really not that bad besides shitty winters which can be fun too.

[–]UrbtoOSU 25 points26 points ago

Columbus is pretty baller too, booming economy, a lot to do in and around town.

[–]craftkiller 49 points50 points ago

Damn bro that sucks, I'm sorry.

[–]Aluwolf 6 points7 points ago

Aha I live in medina county. The amount of fast food places we have is insane.

[–]Brobitz 1 point2 points ago

My goodness, me too. We should hang out.

[–]birdoggin 1 point2 points ago

... Hinckley doesn't sound rural at all

[–]Erikschun 0 points1 point ago

i can confirm! the taco bell off of 76 is busy as F*** all the time! People of medina county love their fast food!

[–]ondaphonedriveing 4 points5 points ago

SE Ohio here boarder of WVA cornfields rednecks jacked up trucks farms. One of the things that's great about Ohio is the diversity. Its nothing like central Ohio down here and Columbus and Akron are vastly different from the small Amish towns. and all that has a vary different feel from the lakes area in the north. Although i do love Cleveland. But having been all around the state, Cornfields rock! Guess I am just an Appalachian at heart.

[–]jbog1883 1 point2 points ago

As a fellow SE Ohioan I concur

[–]jamesandlily_forever 2 points3 points ago

I love Akron! My friends and I just went downtown on Saturday and we had a lot of fun.

[–]sparkle_bomb 2 points3 points ago

Well... My house is surrounded by cornfields. I am from Ohio.

I live on a farm. It sucks. :'(

[–]raydio27 1 point2 points ago

Akron is fun! It's a huge improvement over living in rural Ohio. I do plan on moving when I graduate UA though.

[–]Imnaykid -1 points0 points ago

NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA MOVIE, YEAH!

[–]Jeff_E_Popp 0 points1 point ago

That is the shitty part of Ohio man. Sorry.

[–]okthisisgettingridic 7 points8 points ago

Ohio is wonderful! Here in Columbus there is a rich art and music scene. It also very liberal, more so than one might think. It is very diverse and there is a lot of great food. People are also very friendly here. It's like a small big city. I love it, and I think most people would too!

[–]Lion_Cub_Kurz 70 points71 points ago

I like Ohio...

[–]Blu3j4y 5 points6 points ago

So do I. I moved back here from Chicago (job-related) a few years ago. Even though I often miss my adopted city, I love living in a place where I can look up and see the stars without a bunch of fucking light pollution. I also like the cost of living here. I'll have my humble little house in the country paid off in another 4-5 years, and my dog has lots of room to run in the back yard. The drivers around here are better than anywhere else I've ever lived/visited too.

Sure, it's more boring than Chicago, but I'm getting old enough where I'm starting to enjoy boring. I enjoy the night sky. I enjoy the fact that my neighbor feeds my dog and cats when I'm going to be gone and sometimes gets bored and mows my lawn for me (1.5 acres). I enjoy waving at my elderly neighbors when they're walking around the block at six in the fucking AM.

Ohio isn't the most exciting place, the most scenic place, and we don't have the best restaurants or museums (except for the Air Force Museum at Wright Patt, because that place kicks ass!), but we have mostly pleasant people and mostly good drivers and there's a big city within driving distance, if you're in the mood for city-things.

That said, I'd kill for some Lou Malnati's or a quick trip to Hot Doug's, and I miss being able to take the train anywhere I need to go. Also, fuck those Cubs fans from Northern Indiana who used to make my commute annoying with their drunken antics on the Southshore train. Go Sox!

[–]radnog 3 points4 points ago

Ohio is a great place to live. I live in Ft. Lauderdale, FL now and would move back to Ohio in an instant.

[–]Baggin_Saggin_Barry 28 points29 points ago

The Browns.

[–]ianbits -1 points0 points ago

[–]potterpockets 14 points15 points ago

at least we aren't Michigan

[–]danisaacs 5 points6 points ago

As a native of Toledo, I applaud your citating the foundation of our self esteem.

[–]Karmaswimmer26 9 points10 points ago

Ohio's fine it's not the most boring place on earth, it just depends on what part of it you are in.

[–]SpelingTroll 3 points4 points ago

So it has come to this. We're recycling old Reader's Digest jokes.

[–]Supermomma 5 points6 points ago

Anyone like Rock and Roll? Ever heard of The Pro Football Hall of Fame? The Cleveland Clinic? Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital? Twins Day Festival? Yeah, some of the people here suck, and our winters are crap, but we do have stuff.

[–]elpez124 5 points6 points ago

Dont forget, we've also exported the most presidents, so we want to control the planet, or leave it

[–]MrSirDrManGuyDude 0 points1 point ago

They also had pretty bad luck in office, except Grant who was one of the most badass presidents

[–]frozebaby 5 points6 points ago

I'm in the military and currently living in Florida, but, as I tell my friends, "Ohio is a great place to be from."

I do not miss winter one bit.

[–]Serpantking45 4 points5 points ago

Growing up in both Monroe Michigan and Toledo Ohio, I can say that the reason why people wish to flee Ohio is the proximate to Michigan. They do not wish to catch the stupid. The reason why those from Michigan do not have this problem is because they are already so infected with stupid that they have begun to believe their state is the best and everyone else is stupid. As you can see from the American stereotype, the disease has begun to spread quite successfully.

[–]Bdavis72 0 points1 point ago

Coming from Ohio, this has made my day, thank you.

[–]Hrodebert 0 points1 point ago

Yea, Toledo is basically Michigan...

[–]AtlantaFalcon 7 points8 points ago

[–]SqueezeMePlease 4 points5 points ago

I LOVE OHIO! Moved here when I was 11 (from Chicagoland), left for 8 years when I was 30 (to Chicagoland & WI) & I couldn't wait to get back to Ohio. The #1 reason: the people. Of course there are bad apples anywhere you go, but the general vibe in Ohio is one of kindness.
Ohio is a beautiful place too, despite the overcast skies. The west is primarily flat farm land, and as you go east you start to hit the foothills of the Appalachians and it gets progressively hillier. Then, we've got Lake Erie to the north and the Ohio River riverlands to the south. In the middle-ish is the Hocking Hills (amazing place). Very diverse and unique ecosystems contained within the heartland.
Also, quite honestly, Ohio (like most places) is what you make of it. The opportunities here are unlimited and I am grateful & proud of being an Ohioan! = )

[–]troll_trollingsworth 28 points29 points ago

[–]chub_man 18 points19 points ago

Future astronaut here. Ohio is great. Live in between Akron and Canton. My theory is that Ohioans are more smart and brave than the rest of the country, so we're the ones who do the awesome things in life :D

[–]jacksc 0 points1 point ago

Smarter, not more smart. Sorry, but I'm pretty sure your not gonna catch that rocket.

There is no part of Ohio with the giant mountain ranges seen in that photo.

Me: "I'm from Iowa."

Them: "oh Ohio? My Grandparents are from there!"

[–]OhSnapItsKay 1 point2 points ago

If you don't live in the big cities like Columbus or Cleveland, for example, things can get really boring. For example, where I live, the mall is dead, everyone smells really bad, and most people live on welfare. I hate it here..

[–]Horseballs 3 points4 points ago

That's not exclusive to Ohio, take most places and you can say, "If you don't live in the big cities like X or X, for example, things can get really boring."

[–]exxiestjw 1 point2 points ago

I think this just means we have great education systems. Lots of very smart people are from Ohio.

Ohioan here... The worst part is the weather hands down.

[–]kayadams -1 points0 points ago

having been born and raised in Columbus and subjected to Ohio State football (yuk -- the coach once punched a player on the other side) I left the week after graduating from high school - and while I was kinda forced to go back for about 18 months..... I did escape for good after that -- BUT those 18 months? I might as well been on the moon!!!!!!!!!!!! so maybe those astronauts are just attempting to recreate the Ohio high (HIGH in the middle round on the ends --- (Columbus: best headshops ever!! they even have a couple of 'em on HIGH Street!) there really is nothing to do there so yeah getting high is a major activity Ohio really is the armpit of the country -- As John Denver says in a song: I once spent a week in (ohio) one night........

'course there is also the Identity crisis ---- anyone not from the midwest confuses "Ohio" with "Iowa" ALL THE TIME -- check out the Presidential campaign going on right now --- lotta times ya hear "Iowa" when they mean "Ohio"

and yet the next president most likely depends on what 100,000 Ohio voters decide -- after all IF John Kerry had protested the Ohio vote he would have been president --- bush lost the 2000 vote in florida and 2004 vote in ohio - yet here we are with all the collateral damage due to those misguided elections -- will it happen again this year?

Wyandot County in the house. . . Neil Armstrong once lived here as a kid, for a few years. There was also a minor battle between US and Brittish/Native American forces during the American revolution just outside of Upper Sandusky. I live in Hawaii now, but I miss Ohio, especially since October is here. October was always my favorite month back home.

[–]Eldin89 -1 points0 points ago

Ohio is a sad place of fields and lost dreams, where nightmares are born and those with hope remaining have their souls stolen by the Amish to fuel their dark barn raising powers. That is why astronauts are born there, space is the only escape from the soul stealing Amish.

[–]HBZ415 -1 points0 points ago

As someone who used to live in Michigan, I can assure Ohio is definitely loose butthole.
