Special weapons are for special people. Vera's a good girl, but there's a rifle for the rest of us. It's called the .308 savage lever action. Looks like a cowboy gun, shoots like well mixed martini. I could hit(read blow apart) a rabbit at a thousand yards with that gun because I love it. Because its my weapon. There is an unrecognized affinity between a man and a weapon and the process by which we select killers is still in its infancy.

With all respect to the gentleman, I do believe you are referring to the Savage Model 99.

There are such cartridges as the .300 Savage and the .303 Savage for which the Model 99 was chambered at one time or another; the same rifle could also be bought in .308 Winchester and other calibers.

So if you have a Savage rifle chambered in .308, you could certainly refer to it as your .308 Savage - but it's less than accurate to call it other than by its model name.
