That's the same reaction I have watching Elementary with anyone that has never seen BBC's Sherlock

[–]frailgesture 10 points11 points ago

Is that Elementary? That even looks like the apartment in Sherlock. The layout, anyway.

[–]JayJayJokesterr 4 points5 points ago

Not even close. It looks vacant expect for the chairs.

[–]frailgesture 10 points11 points ago

Maybe I should've said "floorplan."

Entry door on the left, leading to stairwell, large sitting area in the foreground, corridor on the right of the frame. If there was a kitchen instead of a corridor it'd be exactly the same.

[–]Sir_Didymus 1 point2 points ago

I inspected the expected chairs and found them exceptional.

[–]Enleat 26 points27 points ago

I'm really puzzled as to why they felt the need to remake an already brilliant show with a large fanbase already in the US.

EDIT: added "remake" instead of a"adapt".

[–]IdiothequeAnthem 73 points74 points ago

They didn't adapt Sherlock. They're entirely different shows based on (and very different from) original source material over a hundred years old.

[–]Fraymond 21 points22 points ago

Sherlock Holmes has been adapted well over 100 times. I've heard it called the most adapted fiction story of all time, but no way of verifying that.

[–]GiPes 4 points5 points ago

And I read somewhere that Arthur C. Doyle hated Sherlock...

[–]Mister-Manager 0 points1 point ago

He killed him off in the last book so that no one else could write sequels about him. Guess he never considered reboots.

[–]ZeGoldMedal 11 points12 points ago

I believe he did end up rebooting Sherlock.

[–]bamfsalad 0 points1 point ago

The money must've been running low.

[–]Odusei 13 points14 points ago

No. Conan Doyle fell in love with mysticism and the occult. He'd attend seyances and even believed in fairies. Sherlock, on the opposite end, represented a cold rationalism that ignored all fantastical theories and explanations. He grew tired of trying to inhabit both minds, so he had Dr. Moriarty SPOILERS (hover over this and don't bother clicking). The outcry was fantastical. Fans around the world sent Conan Doyle pleading letters, calling him a brute and cruel for killing off their beloved detective. So Conan Doyle finally relented and wrote more stories of Sherlock's adventures, culminating in MORE SPOILERS. It was nothing like what you describe.

You may be thinking of Cervantes, though. After writing Don Quixote, dozens of authors wrote shitty fan fiction surrounding the crazy knight. There were hundreds of "additional adventures" floating around cheapening the brand. In order maintain strict quality standards, Cervantes wrote a second book (now considered to just be the second half of Don Quixote) which he begins by essentially telling all other Quixote writers to fuck off before ending his book with SPOILERS.

[–]Commisar 0 points1 point ago

good post.

[–]GiPes 1 point2 points ago

Still haunting him from the grave.

[–]watership 1 point2 points ago

He killed him off, not because he hated him, but because he was trapped. No one wanted anything but Sherlock Holmes. Writer-casting. Eventually due to pressure from the public and his publishers, he brought him back.

[–]KaziArmada -1 points0 points ago

No, he TRIED to. The money was so good he had to bring him back.

[–]Enleat 0 points1 point ago

I thought Elementary was a remake of BBC's Sherlock?

People always reffer it as such.

[–]dancepartythethird 5 points6 points ago

each BBC season has like 3 episodes, you want to make a ton of eps so you can get it into syndication and make boatloads of money.

[–]kind_of_a_big_deal_ 1 point2 points ago

The BBC doesn't make money. They get their funds through TV licensing.

[–]Kal5 2 points3 points ago

It makes lots of money selling content to foreign markets along with DVDs and all the rest.

[–]dancepartythethird 0 points1 point ago

I'm talking about for the US, that's why they do remakes in the US. 1, there's larger appeal to the US audience and 2, more eps mean syndication which means more money

[–]honeyfage 14 points15 points ago

Probably for the same reason the BBC felt the need to adapt Sherlock after eleventy billion other adaptations had been made. Hell, just looking at CBS alone, Elementary is their third Sherlock adaptation. The BBC didn't invent the Sherlock character.

[–]Enleat 1 point2 points ago

It's still an amazing show IMO :p

[–]KookyGuy[S] 7 points8 points ago

They do that because they think Americans will have a hard time understanding the British culture, and accents. I personally have no trouble following it when I watch Sherlock or any other British shows.

[–]Naggers123 3 points4 points ago

It's not just culture and accents. It's taste.

Different demographic, different show. Like The Office.

[–]Enleat 0 points1 point ago

Well, that's stupid. I mean, look at Dr.Who. Very popular in the US.

[–]coercive_existence 12 points13 points ago

Probably the same reason the US studios remade 'Girl with the dragon tattoo'...even though the original was far better than the remake. Money. Just money.

[–]Enleat 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, probably. They wanted to exploit the fans of the BBC original :/

[–]BimbelMarley 40 points41 points ago

I loved the remake, I think it was better than the original. Fincher is a far better movie director than the Swedish one in my opinion.

[–]soundsjustlike 32 points33 points ago

No the first one is always better. There is LITERALLY no exceptions to this gem of a rule.

[–]TheCatAndSgtBaker 13 points14 points ago

The Thing? Scarface? True Grit? The Fly? Twelve Monkeys?

[–]Robubie 7 points8 points ago

I still stand behind the original "The Thing" but that's cause I am a huge fucking nerd.

[–]TheCatAndSgtBaker 8 points9 points ago

I like all three, but Carpenters is still vastly superior to the other two.

[–]DennisTheSkull 1 point2 points ago

whoosh

[–]Lupinefiasco 0 points1 point ago

Don't forget The Italian Job.

[–]MapleSyrupIsAwesome 1 point2 points ago

You monster.

[–]Naggers123 2 points3 points ago

The jerk is strong with this one

[–]KaziArmada -1 points0 points ago

Gem

ಠ_ಠ

[–]SurpriseButtSexer 0 points1 point ago

The opening sequence alone was worth the £8 quid I spent watching it on cinema.

[–]madmanmunt 4 points5 points ago

The remake owned the original in every way except in the "who made it first" category. They aren't even close.

[–]3x3Eyes 0 points1 point ago

The same with "Le Femme Nakita" 1990 version.

[–]Lecks 0 points1 point ago

Le femme? ಠ_ಠ

[–]YournameCartooned 0 points1 point ago

I've never seen Sherlock, but Elementary was suprisingly good. Are they similar?

[–]c3judge 3 points4 points ago

They are both modern day adaptations of Arthur C. Doyle's character but from there they diverge. Sherlock seems to focus more on adapting the original stories into a modern version. Holmes is a cold, calculated and socially awkward genius. Elementary seems to be he is much more suave and personable druggy. It also doesn't focus AS much in his process.

I found Elementary not as interesting, especially with Lucy as Joan Watson.

[–]YournameCartooned 0 points1 point ago

I also don't like Lucy as Watson. Is Sherlock a good watch? I've been meaning to give it a try, but haven't gotten around to it.

[–]c3judge 2 points3 points ago

I cannot recommend it more.

Only one problem: Its BBC so that means very short seasons. There are two seasons thus far with only 3 episodes per season but each episode is an hour and half so they are like movies.

A third season is on its way.

[–]YournameCartooned 1 point2 points ago

Between this, Doctor Who, and the walking dead, I think I'm set!

[–]Nfestid 1 point2 points ago

All I here is everyone hating on Elementary, I agree that it has nothing on BBC's Sherlock but it's still quite good.

[–]snoharm 0 points1 point ago

How often can that exact interaction possibly happen to you?

[–]c3judge 0 points1 point ago

Quite a few times this week (not watching but talking about), since its airing. I didn't even finish the first episode, it was kind of boring to me

[–]Genmaken -2 points-1 points ago

'Murrica > ALL

These are probably the replies you're gonna get.

[–]c3judge 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, as a Canadian I am happy to get both British and American TV but American can start to wear thin as they often seem to have a very similar show created after a British one becomes popular. Yes, this is not an adaption of Sherlock but the timing is still suspect and doesn't match the BBC version. Other recent examples are MTV's terrible Inbetweeners and Skins adaptions along with the US Top Gear.

'MURRICA, We make it betters!

[–]ShitsCrazyMan 38 points39 points ago

Oh Lucy Liu you torment me so..

[–]albequirky 12 points13 points ago

Agreed, what a talented and gorgeous lady. I'd love to shoot the shit with her, maybe grab a drink then have some casual anal play.

[–]PerilPhoSho 0 points1 point ago

I'd also like some anal play with her, but not so much casual, that shit's gotta be formal for me.

[–]metsfan12694 16 points17 points ago

Is that a Mets hat?

[–]whatev3691 10 points11 points ago

It was the Mets. In the show, they watch the Mets lose a game. Originally they wanted to use the Yankees but the Yankees didn't want to be portrayed as losing. The Mets didn't mind.

Source: I read it somewhere.

[–]tacobeams 3 points4 points ago

As a mets fan... Okay :(

[–]KookyGuy[S] 10 points11 points ago

It's a Mets hat. I'm positive. I think Lucy Liu is a Mets fan.

[–]MrMagpie93 1 point2 points ago

Is that Joel Mchale? (on the left)

[–]KookyGuy[S] 17 points18 points ago

No. It's Jonny Lee Miller from CBS's new show Elementary. He plays Sherlock Holmes.

[–]Will-H12 12 points13 points ago

I struggle to see him as anything other than Sick Boy from Trainspotting.

[–]jaycrew 26 points27 points ago

I struggle to see him as anything other than Crash Override from Hackers.

[–]failspy 5 points6 points ago

Zero Cool.

[–]CricketPinata 4 points5 points ago

Zero Cool? Crashed fifteen hundred and seven computers in one day? Biggest crash in history, front page New York Times August 10th, 1988. I thought you was black man. YO THIS IS ZERO COOL!

[–]williadc 2 points3 points ago

I struggle to see him as anything other than Jordan Chase from Dexter.

[–]ComplainsAboutDvotes 1 point2 points ago

I struggle to see him AT ALL after Angelina Jolie and he divorced.

[–]Naggers123 1 point2 points ago

He's just a pink balloon on a body

[–]JustMadeYouYawn 0 points1 point ago

She frum New York.

[–]compto35 6 points7 points ago

[–]InTheHamIAm 4 points5 points ago

AKA, the first kind of reality show.

[–]andersonb47 2 points3 points ago

I think that was news.

[–]Melangsta 7 points8 points ago

It is just the other way around when I browse reddit with her!

[–]Innunim 2 points3 points ago

That guy looks like Andrew Lincoln a little.

[–]mars_de_milo 2 points3 points ago

Man your girlfriend must really hate reality shows...

[–]Jessicaquinn 2 points3 points ago

It's like she's an Asian girl at first, then at the end she turns into Kim Kardashian.

[–]lemonpjb 4 points5 points ago

This show is actually good. Although Lucy Liu didn't impress much in the first episode.

[–]BlameTibor 4 points5 points ago

Role reversal when we watch sports.

Reality TV for men!

[–]Sunflower_Fortunado 19 points20 points ago

It's funny, because in the gif they are watching sports.

[–]BlameTibor 8 points9 points ago

Lol, unintentionally meta.

[–]ambatman 5 points6 points ago

So sad that our world has come to this. We are now divided by those who like reality shows and those who wish they and all their shows would just die. All except Swamp People. Swamp People is cool.

[–]classy_stegasaurus 1 point2 points ago

Swamp People is awesome. It's like a swamp, but with people.

[–]Krispyz 1 point2 points ago

You kidding? Deadliest Catch... only reality show that's worth watching.

[–]Shruglife 2 points3 points ago

Its like the same show every time though.

[–]Krispyz 4 points5 points ago

That's because it's real.

[–]raknor88 0 points1 point ago

screw that. Mythbusters beats all!

[–]Krispyz 2 points3 points ago

I guess mythbusters is considered a reality show... I put it in it's own category.

[–]Shruglife 0 points1 point ago

Not really reality show

[–]GandTforme 2 points3 points ago

Might want to tell that to their Emmy nomination for "Outstanding Reality Program."

[–]Bert306 0 points1 point ago

ha watching TV don't joke around like that.

[–]xHarry777 0 points1 point ago

I LOVE her hat. LGM!

[–]CapnKetchup 0 points1 point ago

METS BABY!

[–]9733csd 0 points1 point ago

Perfect!

[–]teddypicker55 1 point2 points ago

Lets Go Mets

[–]clunystationsweet 1 point2 points ago

I am not aloud to watch reality shows with my friends anymore, I usually send the whole show making smart arse remarks and get thrown out. Worth it though

[–]RuafaolGaiscioch 1 point2 points ago

This is one of many reasons I love having a nerdgirlfriend.

[–]cautioncarnival 0 points1 point ago

That's my reaction and I'm a girl... actually... I'd probably just look at the person enjoying it and be like, "the fuck is wrong with you."

[–]Achmaddude 0 points1 point ago

what show is this from?

[–]sirAMPR 0 points1 point ago

Wtf is wrong with her legs?

[–]likelorelei 0 points1 point ago

Common girl here. I loath reality TV. Such a waste of television.

[–]jjohn182 0 points1 point ago

Watching Honey Boo Boo with my girlfriend.

[–]Accipehoc 1 point2 points ago

It's been a while since I've heard about Lucy Liu.

[–]Hyetal 0 points1 point ago

I liked her on Southland, though she doesn't come in until the latest season.

[–]DungeonHunter 0 points1 point ago

...Is that the same set as Sherlock?

[–]JayJayJokesterr 0 points1 point ago

damn dude not even close wtf is your problem i am offended

[–]DungeonHunter 0 points1 point ago

Looking at the staircase, the layout of the flat has some similarities, including the wall dividing the staircase and kitchen, that made me see resemblances between this set and the BBC hit's. Sorry, mate.

[–]JayJayJokesterr 0 points1 point ago

Expect there is no kitchen based on that picture above.

I get what you mean but I'm inclined to disagree due to my outrageous bias.

[–]anias -2 points-1 points ago

Sweet, this show is finally out! I tested this show back in April at our CBS location in Las Vegas and loved it. Also keep your eyes open for a show called "Vegas" which we also tested, it's great.

[–]MisterxRager 0 points1 point ago

is that lucy lui?

[–]SleepingOnMoonshine 1 point2 points ago

That is not Sherlock.

[–]MisterxRager 0 points1 point ago

wasn't sure, that's why i asked smart ass

[–]KookyGuy[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yes.

[–]melodnb -2 points-1 points ago

Good thing I have an intelligent girlfriend who doesn't watch that stupid shit.
