And if this is also the Angel who did finally get Rory consider what it did. Out of spite, it ran from wherever it was dropped off just to specifically get Rory to make a point.

I almost want to see this Angel specifically return.

[–]Granite-M 90 points91 points ago

My theory is that Angels don't have strictly linear memory, so that angel knows that it's the one that is going to get Rory.

[–]BroodjeAap 8 points9 points ago

Wouldn't the whole paradox thing mess with it's 'memory' though?

[–]Granite-M 13 points14 points ago

It's not strictly linear. They've got timey wimey memory, so it knows that it's going to get Rory, even with the paradox occurring in between. For example, you can remember the Angel smiling before it gets Rory, then the paradox happens, then the Angel gets Rory. The Angel remembers it in the same way, only different.

[–]PieRangerMcGann 15 points16 points ago

I always took it as, the Angels themselves are almost time. They exist in every facet of time any change they experience while experiencing the final choice. So in a sense from the moment an Angel is born they have already heard everything they will do, and yet haven't but know what they do which means they now have to do it...They're all knowing but not powerful.

They are truly fixed in time, which may by why if they get the Tardis shit gets real...Because than they are more in control

[–]bear1 0 points1 point ago

I think something similar happened with Amy in this episode. She was wearing glasses to hide the lines under her face, then later on in the episode River tells Amy to not let the Doctor age. I'm not saying Amy is an Angel I'm just saying it was used for a really affective emotional reaction.

[–]D14BL0 2 points3 points ago

That angel escaped the paradox, though. So perhaps his memory wasn't affected.

[–]officialdoughboyTom Baker 24 points25 points ago

That's what I thought too, almost like it was licking its chops waiting to feed.

[–]whatsabattle 18 points19 points ago

I hope so, that Angel was cool as shit to put them together in the past when it coulda been like NOPE different centuries and continents!

[–]PJLK-9 39 points40 points ago

In Blink the Doctor hints that the same angel sends people back to the same place (I believe this conversation happens just after he meets Billy Shipton). Since they set up a farm, perhaps they have a way to change it, but it may simply be that the angel really had no choice but to send them to the same place.

Amy asks if it would be so, and the Doctor says no (he lies, he wanted to keep Amy), where River confirms that's how they work (she wanted her parents to be able to be together).

[–]eighthgear 15 points16 points ago

The Doctor may have been lying, but he may have also not genuinely known. In Blink, he implies that the same Angel touched both him and Billy, because they ended up in the same year. However, that isn't exactly scientific proof. That was just one instance. Imagine how the Doctor would have felt if he not only lost both Amy and Rory, but Rory ended up in the 20th Century and Amy ended up in the medieval era or something.

[–]paycoTennant 12 points13 points ago

And there's a difference between saying "we ended up in the same place, so we were probably zapped by the same angel" and saying "a given angel will always send every victim back to the same time and place".

[–]anonyjonny 1 point2 points ago

If she ended up in medieval times he wouldn't of been able to go get her wouldn't of been off limits to the tardis. On this note though why not go pick them up in say 1940 that makes no sense to me at all

[–]whatsabattle 23 points24 points ago

Well they've changed the rules on the Angels each time they show up, so I just assume that all bets are off every time.

[–]ProfSmilesTennant 0 points1 point ago

Doesn't he say he doesn't know if she'll go to the same place?

[–]PJLK-9 0 points1 point ago

He does in TATM, but we know the doctor lies and wanted Amy to stay. River contradicted him and encouraged Amy, and River also has experience with the angels.

[–]elevendayempire 8 points9 points ago

If it was the same Angel from the end of the episode, it is quite spectacularly thick. Zapping Rory and Amy IN FRONT OF THE DOCTOR AND RIVER. One's a stone-cold psycho, the other… well, obviously that Angel hasn't seen The Family of Blood.

[–]KyndelLeighK-9 3 points4 points ago

No kidding. I could just see the Doctor going all Timelord Victorious on every Angel ever now.

[–]BUTTFART_RAPEDICKDalek 178 points179 points ago

The babies giggling and scampering terrified me infinitely more.

[–]Doctorwhogirl10 130 points131 points ago

The baby that blew out the match too.. So creepy.

[–]JewsusKingKhan 45 points46 points ago

This. This one. What do you mean it blew out the match I thought they were in a state lock when they were visible, but it still blew out the match anyways. That baby was apparently the superest angel ever.

[–]jubydooTom Baker 34 points35 points ago

If you recall, though, the angels at the end of "Blink" were able to start cutting the power even while they were observed. It seems that the angels are able to affect the world in some limited ways even if they are locked in place.

[–]kaunisTennant 10 points11 points ago

They can turn out lights while being stared at, so maybe breathing just falls under the same category. You don't have to move to puff air like that, as long as you have your lips in that position first, which it did.

[–]youexhibitionist 5 points6 points ago

it's dr who, they're allowed to take as many liberties as they fucking want

[–]McRigger 2 points3 points ago

Because time war and stuff...

[–]serenityunlimitedSmith 13 points14 points ago

Or it blew a puff of air just before freezing, the match lights, then the air hits it to blow it out.

[–]AngriestCosmonaut 14 points15 points ago

Nah, Rory was staring at it for a second before it blew out the match.

[–]serenityunlimitedSmith 5 points6 points ago

I think I justified it as the air traveling very slowly while watching it, haha. Maybe it puffed the air from farther away? I agree though, it was a bit off. Might have been just for the sake of dramatic effect.

[–]JewsusKingKhan 9 points10 points ago

It definitely was, but it makes it a lot creepier if you assume its cannon.

[–]serenityunlimitedSmith 4 points5 points ago

Okay, yeah, much creepier! Maybe moving and breathing are separate and one doesn't restrict the other! No candles are safe.

[–]kinyutaka 1 point2 points ago

I call the Rule of Funny

[–]realfinkploydEccleston 1 point2 points ago

Dammit, I clicked on this 3 hours ago and only now got back to this tab.

[–]djasonwright 2 points3 points ago

Would have been much Creepier if we see the angel blowing, then Rory's "huwuhhuh" (you know... Like he does), blew out the flame.

-like the angel was getting ready to blow it out.

[–]chenobbleCyberperson 1 point2 points ago

There was more than one baby...

[–]madeInNY 0 points1 point ago

Maybe he blinked?

[–]akm0921TARDIS 3 points4 points ago

I thought that was just the Angel feeding on the energy of that match which blew it out, and the puff of air was just for dramatic effect.

[–]vendlusSmith 3 points4 points ago

Feeding off the potential energy of the match? Hadn't even considered that. It's brilliant.

[–]TheSeldomShakenEccleston 1 point2 points ago

Angel Jesus?

[–]Inamanlyfashion 21 points22 points ago

The Giggling Angels really doesn't have the same ring to it though.

[–]QuietEyed1 1 point2 points ago

Slap some clown facepaint on them and they'll be nice and terrifying again, I bet.

[–]eleventh_doctor_whoSmith 9 points10 points ago

I kept hearing the boo ghost's sound effect used in the Mario games.

[–]AkoshermealTARDIS 1 point2 points ago

Would love to see an episode focus on those little devils.

[–]0riensAstrum 0 points1 point ago

I didn't like them :( I was really excited about the idea of them, but. They sounded so stereotypically "creepy baby laugh", I was disappointed.

[–]ANAL_QUEEN 73 points74 points ago

What have you done? The image of an angel is an angel? We're doooooomed.

[–]GortosTennant 32 points33 points ago

How many pictures of the Statue of Liberty exist?

[–]I_Was_LarryVlad 28 points29 points ago

But that's not an angel anymore, so it doesn't matter, does it?

[–]PracticalDemonkeepinTARDIS 10 points11 points ago

The Statue of Liberty bit really irks me, it's made of brass and the fact that the Angels are made of stone has always been pressed. And, if forgiving that to over-sight by the writers what about every single pair of eyes in Manhattan? I mean it's a Douglas Adam's level of improbability that not one person in the New York area happened to be looking at The Statue of Liberty for the entire time it moved.

/rant

[–]ZoogyTARDIS 2 points3 points ago

Yeah. I mean I was able to ignore the whole its not stone thing mainly because I forgot about that. What I really disliked is like you said with as large as the Statue of Liberty is even at night chances are SOMEONE is going to see it when it moves into the middle of the city and also while not moving around and in its normal spot even at night chances are there are a lot of people looking at it meaning it probably couldn't move. And I mean people don't even have to be looking right at the whole thing. All they need to do is see a part of it for it to not be able to move. I guess I am able to somewhat over look this because of how cool I thought it was but I really expect a lot better from Doctor Who.

[–]optimis344Smith 1 point2 points ago

Well, it didn't happen current day, so there are alot less eyes looking at it, especially at night. And again, a 6'0 angel can move clean across a room in the blink of an eye. I imagine one that is as big as the SoL would move halfway across Manhattan in that time. Not saying it's the best reasoning, but we are talking that all we need to believe is that for a single second, it wasn't being watched, and then it's into the buildings were long range visibility is poor.

[–]Hoppipzzz 0 points1 point ago

The Statue of Liberty is made of copper...

[–]PracticalDemonkeepinTARDIS 1 point2 points ago

Sorry about that, you are right. My point is still valid though.

[–]Hoppipzzz 0 points1 point ago

No problem! Anyway, going back to the idea that an image of an angel is an angel, if the statue of liberty was based off an angel, it would be one no matter what it was made of.

[–]KyndelLeighK-9 1 point2 points ago

Yes, but most of those pictures were taken before it was an Angel (River and the Doctor talk about the Angels taking them over) and it is now no longer an Angel. At least, that is how I see it. The picture of the Statue of Liberty would have to be taken while it was an Angel for the picture to be an Angel. I do not think the Angels could change every picture that already existed into an Angel as well.

[–]beto5243 0 points1 point ago

Speaking of which, wasn't their a picture of the statue of liberty inside of the elevator? I was totally expecting that to be an angel and play a role, but it didn't, was quite surprised honestly.

[–]blarg_dino 0 points1 point ago

Well, fuck.

[–]Xanthan81Tennant 9 points10 points ago

Here's a question: If the image of an angel is an angel, is a cosplay of an angel also an angel?

EDIT: I made a wordy spell wrong.

[–]boostWillis 38 points39 points ago

No because angles are not angels.

Sorry.

[–]D14BL0 14 points15 points ago

It's not animated if you don't blink.

[–]warrenseth 4 points5 points ago

To ease the tension: for some reason, I always save anything I do in ps to .gif. It's a habit I picked up when I first started doing animated avatars for a forum, through which I learned ps. So don't be. But you know, it can turn into an angel, so I might've saved it in .jpg, but it being a picture of an angel, just turned into a .gif, so it can move. You know, either way's possible...

To be fair, it is in the trailer

[–]Sir_Edmund_Bumblebee 17 points18 points ago

There's a reason I never watch trailers. Ever since they dropped the climactic line of The Doctor's Wife in the trailer I've avoided them.

[–]Cyberboss_JHCBTennant 3 points4 points ago

spoiler

[–]lwllwTARDIS 0 points1 point ago

[–]SolaireOfAstoraTARDIS 2 points3 points ago

[–]Sir_Edmund_Bumblebee 1 point2 points ago

Yep, still love the exchange, but having it in the trailer took away from the episode I thought. I much prefer to just avoid the trailers and be surprised by the episodes.

[–]Ag-E 0 points1 point ago

Yup. And people don't get why I leave the room the second the 'and in the next episode!' spoilers come on.

[–]lalijosh 13 points14 points ago

Since the episode was in New York where young Melody regenerated, I thought the angel would send the Ponds back but they would run into their daughter and get to raise her like they always wished. But that didn't happen in the show. I guess they live out the rest of their lives likely living in the same city as their daughter but never seeing her. Sad episode.

[–]CVI07 7 points8 points ago

Young melody has to be shot and regenerate into Mel in order to eventually become River. Would have been a paradox otherwise.

[–]lalijosh 5 points6 points ago

"Last time I did this I ended up a toddler in the middle of New York."

[–]Cyberboss_JHCBTennant 2 points3 points ago

But there still are several years (50 or so) of unaccounted time before Amy and Rory ever meet Mels

[–]CVI07 4 points5 points ago

Are you thinking Lake Silencio 1968 -> Modern day young melody regenerates? Remember, the impossible astronaut at Silencio was adult archaeologist Melody having been sent to the past. Young Melody was in the space suit in the near past/modern day.

Melody born at Demon's Run

Melody sent to the recent past (c. 1980s) raised by silence/trained in space suit

Melody shot by Amy/regenerates into Mels

Mels raised with Amy and Rory (c. 1990s)

Mel's regenerates into "River" body

River sent to Lake Silencio

[–]gorilla_the_ape 0 points1 point ago

We know that the regeneration in New York was in January 1970. We had the moon landing (July 1969), and then the caption 'Six Months Later', and the regeneration.

[–]yoiksandaway 11 points12 points ago

I was freaked out by the cherubs (all that giggling), but this is by far creepier!

[–]MrYaahSmith 23 points24 points ago

I don't know man, that first time you realize an angel is moving in Blink is pretty crazyyy.

[–]ProtoKun7Smith 23 points24 points ago

One of my favourite moments from that episode is when Sally picks up the key and two of them move in the background in the one continuous shot.

[–]Commodore_PerryTARDIS 4 points5 points ago

I always wondered, though, why are the angels frozen if no one in the show is looking at them? The only people observing them are us.

[–]MrYaahSmith 15 points16 points ago

NO! Don't wonder about such things, you will break the fourth wall.

[–]Commodore_PerryTARDIS 6 points7 points ago

So the Angels are real, and there are thousands of pictures and videos of them. We're screwed.

[–]robdotavi 0 points1 point ago

And you heard what he said about paradoxes. We can never talk about this again or bye bye manhattan.

[–]D14BL0 8 points9 points ago

Because it's scarier that way. You may recall another episode with the angels (can't remember the name right now; it was in 11th's first season), where they show the angels actually moving. It was significantly less terrifying watching them physically move, and kinda ruined the idea for most people.

[–]Commodore_PerryTARDIS 4 points5 points ago

Season 5, Episode 5: Flesh and Stone

[–]vendlusSmith 3 points4 points ago

That was the huge moment of Fridge Brilliance in Blink. That moment when you realized that the angels were affected by the viewing audience at home.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fridge/DoctorWho

Of course, S5E5 jacked it all up. :(

[–]lonesharkxK-9 0 points1 point ago

gah that's 2 tv tropes links in one thread.. im doooooomed.

[–]vendlusSmith 0 points1 point ago

I did intentionally leave the full url there so that people knew what they were getting into before clicking. ;)

[–]lonesharkxK-9 1 point2 points ago

But how can one resist! Endless media knowledge one click away.

[–]ProtoKun7Smith 1 point2 points ago

That was exactly the point. Angels can (usually) be affected by the fourth wall.

[–]NeighyoTARDIS 0 points1 point ago

I think it's a play on the "we're looking at them" thing, which is why Time Of Angels/Flesh & Stone was a bit iffy, because we saw them actually move. Whenever they move, it's always black and no one sees them, not even the audience.

[–]ProtoKun7Smith 21 points22 points ago

I see your Angel smile and raise you an Angel "I dunno lol".

[–]Twilix01 17 points18 points ago

[–]ravelle 6 points7 points ago

What was up with the mother and child angels though? I've never seen those around.

[–]lydociaTARDIS 7 points8 points ago

And the statue of liberty..

[–]NotAChineseSpy 15 points16 points ago

This bothered me. How in the hell did the Statue of Liberty move? I like the idea that it was an Angel, but it never could have moved. There isn't a second in the day that Statue isn't being looked at. It's impossible for it to not be seen.

[–]IAMAVelociraptorAMATARDIS 19 points20 points ago

During 1937-1938 it was under renovation and closed to the public. Big lights aren't focused on it, immigrants aren't coming in to see it (at this point Ellis Island is more of a detention/exportation center), and the Angels have taken over Manhattan - including Ellis Island - to the point where they can strategically get rid of anybody who might be looking at it.

[–]NotAChineseSpy -1 points0 points ago

Except the Statue has been illuminated since 1916...

[–]PracticalDemonkeepinTARDIS 0 points1 point ago

Also, Angels are explicitly stone and the statue is made of brass.

[–]EmotionlessFloormat -1 points0 points ago

There was a poster of the Statue of Liberty in the elevator... the image of an angel becomes an angel.

[–]NotAChineseSpy 0 points1 point ago

And an angel can't move if it's being watched. The statue of liberty is never not being looked at.

[–]eighthgear 5 points6 points ago

The Angels took over statues in NYC - the Statue of Liberty, the cherubs, the mother and child, etc.

[–]fluffyplagueTARDIS 1 point2 points ago

It looked like a pioneer woman and child, from the bonnet the mother was wearing. I'd assume it was a statue of early settlers to the area.

[–]Zoot-just_zootTARDIS 7 points8 points ago

Did they ever come up with a reason that one was smiling?

[–]Shroom_mole 26 points27 points ago

I assumed it was because the Angel knew what was about to happen.

[–]rocksandnipples 2 points3 points ago

I also kind of associated it with how the doctor said this one was immensely powerful.

[–]serenityunlimitedSmith 21 points22 points ago

Because Rory went into R. Williams' room, no? Therefore seeing himself be old, and seeing himself die, therefore creating a fixed point. Thus, Angels have another victim.

[–]DankDarkoK-9 4 points5 points ago

I was thinking it was because she saw the doctor and I thought I remember an angel episode where the doctor was thought to be a huge feast for the angels.

[–]WrymTroughton 1 point2 points ago

I had thought that it might have been grateful for their hand in freeing the chained and tortured angel, which I wonder if, by the way, was some sort of breeding queen a la Alien.

Who would want to spoil it for themselves by seeing a "preview?"

normal peolpe who dont give a shit. Thats like getting mad at a book publisher for writing the summary of the book on the back cover.

Honestly, I can not understand the "anti-preview" mentality.

Trailers often reveal key plot points/twists that stop you from being surprised when they're uncovered in the show. Good ones don't, but you never know if the trailer is good or bad until you've actually watched it. The only point in watching the trailer is to get excited about the show, but if I'm already excited then what's the point in risking spoiling myself?

[–]DankDarkoK-9 0 points1 point ago

It not that way for me. If the writing is good enough no amount of a scene should be ruined because its all about the episode and season as a whole. ffs, I was reading this discussion thread 6 hours before I even watched the episode and it was still amazingly brilliant even though I, more or less, knew what was happening.

[–]lonesharkxK-9 0 points1 point ago

I think you might be in the minority in that view. I have been avoiding trailers for episodes since tv went all long story arc. It pisses me off when I am watching it and they foreshadow something obscure but I manage to figure out whats going on before the show. Its like if, for instance, you saw a trailer for the 6th sense and instead of concentrating on him trying to help the boy, they made a point to show him being alone. I personally eat that stuff up and then I think about it and one day an idea pops into my head. then i watch the episode and the evidence mounts and before the show reveals I figured it out. early and when there would still be surprises if I hadnt seen the trailer. I'm glad you don't have a problem with spoilers though, must be nice to enjoy something regardless of how much you have figured out.

My guess is that it was painted before. Otherwise it would have indented pupils

[–]ajtexasranger 0 points1 point ago

WHY DID I LOOK AT THIS BEFORE SEEING THE EPISODE???

[–]MomoPeacheZDalek 1 point2 points ago

My sister made this the wallpaper on my computer while I was at the store.

[–]TwirlOfLemongrab 1 point2 points ago

I thought the baby angel blowing out the match was creepier.

[–]sir0zekeTARDIS -1 points0 points ago

Not a spoiler.

[–]retep1515 0 points1 point ago

Anybody see the angel hand wobbling around when it grabbed River? Poor actress had to hold that pose for so long probably!

[–]forehanddeath11Silence 0 points1 point ago

wait i thought the angels were a prop, and not played by an actress/actor?

[–]retep1515 0 points1 point ago

So did I! It makes sense that they used an actual actress in this situation though. It would be very difficult to cast an angel hand around river's wrist.

That is how I smell my fingers

Smile! You're on candid camera. (and therefore now in it as well.)

[–]clear_the_coast6 0 points1 point ago

I am watching this episode right now... With the hood of my hoodie covering most of my face. (For protection, of course. 🙈 )

[–]hardmanswifeTARDIS 0 points1 point ago

[–]that_darn_cat 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me or is that angel Tilda Swinton...?

[–]BeinggravyandstuffTennant 1 point2 points ago

And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while..

[–]telldrak -1 points0 points ago

Removed per post-post reading of the content rules per 'misc angels', although, technically, it was a photograph I took and manipulated of some statuary that I assumed was semi-relevant to the topic.

I understand the downvotes now, though a quick comment directing me to see the rules would have been appreciated.

[–]wedgewood_perfectosEccleston 3 points4 points ago

i can dig it.

[–]CHEESEONFlREMcGann 2 points3 points ago
