[–]Kamakazi1 85 points86 points ago

Still counted it

[–]King_Pumpernickel 22 points23 points ago

Twas the point.

[–]Kamakazi1 14 points15 points ago

Well...it worked

[–]King_Pumpernickel 3 points4 points ago

I think I was just interested in the fact that this was the first time reddit has upvoted someone who pointed out the purpose of a comment.

[–]Kamakazi1 0 points1 point ago

Well there's also /u/mentions_the_obvious or something like that.

Oh god, you are just going to go to town in these comments.

[–]impossibru65 0 points1 point ago

It's probably going to take forever, but someone needs to make those tennis balls upvotes.

[–]squirrel_stomper 13 points14 points ago

It's sort of a requirement for the last line to stand out from the other two.

[–]Hopeful_Swine 65 points66 points ago

Five syllable line

A seven syllable line

Fuck you, squirrel_stomper

...I'm just kidding I saw my opportunity and I look it..sorry :)

[–]BrazilianRider 9 points10 points ago

Last line is six syllables.

[–]MrSexysPizza 27 points28 points ago

Five syllable line

A seven syllable line

Fuck squirrel_stomper

(Fixed for those who consider "squirrel" two syllables.)

[–]rjqg327 12 points13 points ago

People who say squir-rel...

[–]Ieuan1996 -1 points0 points ago

I've heard people say it like "sqwurl" and to me that just doesn't make any sense. The vowels before and after the "rr" should give it two syllables.

[–]rjqg327 -1 points0 points ago

It's prounpunced sqwerl here in the Midwest. Im pretty sure they say squir-rel in the east coast, and Britain ( from my knowledge of British/east coast media[I don't watch fucking jersey shore])

[–]dj_bizarro 3 points4 points ago

Ok Natasha. Where's Bullwinkle?

[–]squirrel_stomper 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that last line 6 syllables?

[–]freindo 6 points7 points ago

There are actually a ton of requirements apparently. For a while there was a bot that followed around haiku bot pointing out that none of it was haiku.

edit: here it is, doesn't look like it happens anymore http://www.reddit.com/user/haiku_rating_bot

like it ain't no thang.

[–]iamayam -1 points0 points ago

Wait a minute...you're not HaikuBot!

[–]Saiing 0 points1 point ago

The irony is, the second line is wrong. Whether you translate it into syllables or not (which makes the whole thing a bit pointless since that's not how it works in Japanese anyway) an 'n' ending counts as one unit, or 'on', so it doesn't work as it's actually 8.

[–]lauralikescake 136 points137 points ago

No one asked but I'm going to lay down some of my sick haiku knowledge anyway. Most haikus as we formulate them in English aren't proper haikus according to the traditional Japanese definition. For one thing, Japanese doesn't have syllables in the sense that we do, instead it uses mora, which are like reduced syllables; they can only be formed as consonant-vowel (eg. tu) or one vowel only (eg. o). So say we would consider the word "street" to be one syllable, but if you were to borrow that word in to Japanese it might be more like su-tu-re-e-to; it would take up the whole first line of a haiku.

Also apparently for it to be a haiku it has to contain at least one word relating to the seasons.

I graduated with a linguistics degree in July and I haven't used it yet and I'm bored.

[–]Soulless 28 points29 points ago

The seasons thing is close, but not entirely accurate. The one element that a Haiku requires is actually called the turn. It is where, in the poem, the opening line/s are contrasted against the remaining one/s. such as:

On the temple bell

has settled, and is fast asleep,

a butterfly.

Note: not 5-7-5, doesn't really matter all that much. The turn here happens at the first comma. Where the image of noise and loudness (temple bell) is contrasted with the image of a sleeping butterfly.

source: College literature class.

[–]Mister_Donut 10 points11 points ago

There's also the use of the kireji, or the punctuation syllable. It's hard to define in English, but it essentially serves to let the reader know that one should contemplate the meaning and imagery in the preceding line before going on to the rest of the poem.

The kireji generally, but not always, indicates where the author intended the turn to occur. Basho was quite skillful in his use of the kireji, especially to the extent of knowing when it was OK not to use them.

[–]sobercontrol 5 points6 points ago

Yes, the second line is the turn... Also, the first is the pledge and the third is the prestige.

[–]Polymarchos 2 points3 points ago

What I learned (from a crazy visiting Japanese professor in a class on Japanese Culture), was what lauralikescake said. The season word is the defining characteristic.

[–]Soulless 2 points3 points ago

The wiki says both are necessary.

[–]Amm0 33 points34 points ago

When I saw 'syllable' in the title. I knew there would be at least one person coming here to explain that.

Someone cannot be incorrect on the internet without being corrected.

[–]Stop_Pun_Threads 23 points24 points ago

Actually you're wrong. I say incorrect things on the internet all the time, and I'm only corrected about 50% of the time

[–]Kramernaut 13 points14 points ago

No you aren't. (It is now at a 51% correction rate.)

[–]Jfolcik 5 points6 points ago

That's not necessarily true. Source.

[–]Doghten2 0 points1 point ago

Nicely done sir

[–]omgzpplz 2 points3 points ago

[–]DontCareHippie 0 points1 point ago

Also Basho, the Shakespeare of the Haiku said that it is more important to get your point across than to stick to strict structure. Literature major here now going to be a police officer. My college is wasted.

[–]Squatso 2 points3 points ago

I do what I want

because I'm a bad mother,

so fuck your damn rules.

[–]stillnotking 3 points4 points ago

English adapted the haiku form to its own structure. It wouldn't make sense to write poetry according to the phonology of a completely different language, even if the verse form originated in that language. So, in English, a "true" haiku is 5-7-5 syllables. (Although it's worth pointing out that modern haiku, in both languages, often depart from the rules.)

The part about the seasons isn't true; many famous haiku don't refer to the seasons at all.

[–]dorekk 1 point2 points ago

The part about the seasons isn't true; many famous haiku don't refer to the seasons at all.

Really? I was under the impression that that was a pretty ironclad rule! Citation?

[–]AuntieSocial 0 points1 point ago

There is a "subgroup" of haiku known as senryu that are more humanistic, instead of being about nature.

JAPANESE IS PHONETICALLY SIMPLE AND CONTEXTUALLY RIDICULOUSLY COMPLEX. HAIKU ARE CHOCK-FULL OF MULTIPLE MEANINGS.

AMERICAN GRADE SCHOOL TEACHERS FAWN AT HOW SIMPLE AND CLEAN THE LINE ABOUT A FROG LEAPING INTO THE POND IS, WHILE BEING COMPLETELY IGNORANT OF THE COMPLEX, MULTIPLE MEANINGS OF EACH ELEMENT.

TL;DR: TEACHING HAIKU IN ENGLISH CLASS IS ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF INTELLECTUALLY FETISHIZING THROUGH PROFOUND IGNORANCE IN AMERICAN CULTURE. THEY SHOULD BE CALLED "5-7-5 POEMS", NOT HAIKU.

EDIT: AN ANALOGY FOR YOU: IMAGINE A JAPANESE SCHOOLTEACHER WHO HAS NEVER SEEN WESTERNERS. HE SEES A VIDEO OF WESTERN CHILDREN PLAYING HOPSCOTCH. THE NEXT DAY, THE TEACHER EXCITEDLY TELLS THE STUDENTS, "CLASS, TODAY WE WILL LEARN TO WALK LIKE WESTERNERS!" AND PROCEEDS TO TEACH THEM TO HOP ON ONE FOOT.

[–]hawthorneluke 1 point2 points ago

As for the west, I'm pretty sure it goes like this:

Find out about haiku's, find the rules interesting more than the content itself and go about creating random comments in English that apply to these rules and call what you have a haiku.

Then you can go even further and just say a haiku "is a short poem", then just take it to mean "short" and there you go we now have a youtube haiku subreddit (ie, short youtube videos).

I'm pretty sure they made a film about such things being lost in translation.

A haiku doesn't actually have a specific syllable requirement.

Excerpt from Wikipedia: Traditional haiku consist of 17 on (also known as morae), in three phrases of 5, 7 and 5 on respectively. Any one of the three phrases may end with the kireji. Although haiku are often stated to have 17 syllables, this is inaccurate as syllables and on are not the same.

Every time Zero says anything in Borderlands 2.

Funny, I always check for a reference to the season and a turning syllable. 99% of reddit haiku's completely fail to be haiku's at all except in the same sense that a pile of garbage can be considered art I suppose.

Three lines were in that image;

so I counted them,

but it was not a haiku.

If the title of the graph had been "When reading haikus" the content of the picture would have been a haiku. Just saying.

Count those motherfucking syllables like it was the law...

When I see a haiku I look at it and think 'why the fuck is everybody creaming over haikus these days?'

[–]_sledje_ 0 points1 point ago

Everyone stop please

I'm so sick of these haikus

A non sequitur!

[–]ILovePopPunk 1 point2 points ago

Not a haiku :(
