As soon as I saw the .gif, I started mumbling "I hope somebody quotes Heavyweights. I hope somebody quotes Heavyweights." And as soon as I saw it, a "yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" escaped my lips.

If you had bothered to check your own link, you would have seen that the other link was submitted by the same guy. The only thing he did was crosspost it to /r/funny . >_>

[–]The-Vajazzler 187 points188 points ago

How is this gif of such high framerate and quality? I'm more intrigued by that than the cars.

[–]Stewie977 75 points76 points ago

I'm no expert, but regarding the frame rate, I believe gifs are set with a delay between the pictures in milliseconds so it can range from 0-1000 or maybe more. So if it is set to 10ms, you would get a gif with 100 fps.

Gifs are also limited to 256 colors (colors variate) from a 24-bit RGB color space.

That being said, as long as the clips are relatively short and you have a good source. The quality of the gifs can be quite high.

Example of a gif I made

[–]Sf4tt 9 points10 points ago

http://www.hdgif.com/home/ (something might be nsfw)

[–]smithoski 0 points1 point ago

Noice. Jessica Alba.

[–]Inomares 8 points9 points ago

Yep, they can be quite impressive. And large.

23mb gif @ 1920x1080

(You might want to let it load for a minute or two; it'll stutter greatly until it's loaded completely)

For RES users, open it in a new tab instead, or it won't fit.

[–]jkc3ny 9 points10 points ago

[–]yParticle 3 points4 points ago

Try it next week.

[–]frishdawgz 3 points4 points ago

borderlands respawn?

[–]Inomares 4 points5 points ago

The "link" from James Cameron's Avatar actually.

[–]shlack 0 points1 point ago

also the 256 colours cause a lot of posterization, look at the sky in OP's Gif, the effect is very visible.

[–]FormulaicResponse 25 points26 points ago

Welcome to the future.

[–]herimitho 6 points7 points ago

This gif have more frames per second than normal movies. >:[

[–]RedPhoenix122 3 points4 points ago

That's because movie studios thought high framerates looked too "amateur", so intentionally produce them at a lower frame rate, something like 24 fps, I believe.

[–]TehFence 11 points12 points ago

Well, actually that's not entirely correct.

Movies started out with 16 fps as the first fixed standard in the era of silent films. As sound films came along, the frame rate had to be increased to 24 fps, because else the audio quality would have lacked.

They keep it nowadays, because, well, people are used to this standard for the last 80+ years. There are efforts to change this, though. One film that's announced to be in 48 fps is The Hobbit.

[–]redisnotdead 2 points3 points ago

No, that's a myth.

Before sound movie, video frame rate was whatever the cameraman's hardware allowed. It could range from 16fps to 40 or more for the more expensive cameras. Movie framerates were written on the reel to allow projectors to play the movie at the speed it was meant to be played.

At the time sound was added to movies, theaters needed to sync sound and video, since the audio tape couldn't be played slower or faster without distorting the sound, they chose to go for a standard video frame rate instead.

Warner polled all their movie theaters about the average speeds of films they were playing, and speeds returned were between 20-28fps.

They chose 24 fps as a compromise between film length and reel length (storage space was obviously a problem as a 1000ft reel of 35mm film at 24 fps lasts about 10 minutes).

Everyone kinda tagged along, and camera makers made 24 fps movies, and nobody really bothered with changing that until now, with 3D movies needing at least 48fps to keep the same feel.

[–]rivalarrival 4 points5 points ago

You're talking about two different things. RedPhoenix is talking about the recent phenomenon of movie studios and theaters possessing the technical capability of producing and screening high framerate movies but choosing to shoot in 24fps; you're talking about how 24fps became the "gold standard"

Fast-framerate films do have an amateurish look to them. They tend to look like home movies or 1970's soap operas. The slower, 24fps framerate is part of that cinematic effect that we've come to associate with high production values.

[–]Packers91 2 points3 points ago

They look amateurish because the soap operas and home movies were filmed on handheld cameras that happened to film at >24fps. So people came to associate them with those. I saw That 70's Show in >24 on tv the other day and it bugged me for a while but I got over it.

[–]Trppmdm -1 points0 points ago

basically, when it's more than 30 fps your brain doesn't develop the frames between the actual ones in the movie so it's less immersive.

[–]LookInTheDog 0 points1 point ago

...wut

[–]hifibry 0 points1 point ago

Above 30 will seem less immersive to audiences at first. It has the power to immerse them more, though, imo.

[–]cesclaveria 3 points4 points ago

I'm not 100% sure how gifs work but usually with anything that must represent animation each frame actually only contains a delta from the previous frame, the information that changed, so an static camera on a not too busy scene would be ideal for compression. Then for image compression the process usually takes the pixels that have the same color and groups them, so the actual data says: 50 black, 20 grey, 10 white instead of: black, black, black, black, etc...

So an static shot plus a limited color palette may contribute to the gif quality.

[–]the_snook 2 points3 points ago

This is pretty much exactly how animated GIF works. The final compression is a little more complex than a run-length encoding like you describe, but close enough, and your conclusion holds.

[–]GenuineVoodoo 64 points65 points ago

here's the video

[–]TheRealFender 24 points25 points ago

Thanks, I couldn't tell what happened from the GIF.

Edit: wtf? Why am I being down voted for this? I could NOT tell what happened in the GIF. No sarcasm.

[–]washthatbody 20 points21 points ago

If your comment can pretty much be replaced by an upvote and you're outside of cj, you'll probably get downvoted.

[–]JacksLackOfSuprise 1 point2 points ago

...and you're gonna have a bad time...

[–]MrLovelife 6 points7 points ago

People thought you wanted to play sarcastaball.

[–]TarMil 1 point2 points ago

Dare I say the joke flew right over your head?

[–]sneffles 0 points1 point ago

...whoosh? - no no, just doesnt feel right.

[–]shadmere -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, I agree. The video was a big help.

[–]smellybottom 0 points1 point ago

There's an extremely powerful gif lobby around these parts and they essentially have their own version of megaphone which allows them to mobilize to any sort of anti-gif subject matter... Your comment was obviously taken as sarcasm.

[–]djdavetrouble -1 points0 points ago

Once more in ultra slow motion....

[–]Scarfall 0 points1 point ago

The GIF had a higher framerate than the video.

How?

[–]Frederic54 28 points29 points ago

Wow Québec on the front page, nice :)

How does one go about joining a race like this?

[–]filoufil88 6 points7 points ago

Step 1: Buy a bazou Step 2: Race

[–]n1c0_ds 1 point2 points ago

There used to be a race in Chicoutimi with about 100 cars on the track. The name of that race translates to "motorized hell", and it deserved it.

My uncle is trying to bring it back and bought parts of the racetrack where it happened. Crazy old man took part in bus races.

[–]deadoom 1 point2 points ago

Crissement un upvote for bazou osti

[–]klaymankombat 8 points9 points ago

How the hell do you make a gif that smooth?

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 3 points4 points ago

High frame rate, small frame size, and probably a global palette.

[–]OrionH 8 points9 points ago

Is there a video of this?

[–]unibod 51 points52 points ago

No, this was captured by the newest technology: Gif-only Cameras.

The cameras only film the highest quality of gifs, as you can see in it's great framerate. The camera does not capture sound, or in a resolution bigger than your credit card.

If you'd really like to buy one, they're on sale here

[–]TheLeftoverTrailMix 15 points16 points ago

Reminds me of the end of the first race in 2 Fast 2 Furious, when Ludacris puts the bridge up and Paul Walker guns it and jumps over the guy in front of him.

[–]Genmaken 7 points8 points ago

Didn't Ludacris win an Oscar for that performance?

[–]Flamo_the_Idiot_Boy 8 points9 points ago

That's ludicrous.

I would have literally shat my pants. Can you imagine seeing a fucking car fly over the top of yours when you least expect it?! But the landing..... The landing was so smooth! So impossibly smooth!

Tiny Wings in real life!

[–]razorx71 -1 points0 points ago

Judging by the 90 degree turn to the left he had to make in less than 100ft after he landed, i'd say the car he jumped probably immediately overtook him.

[–]MrBurd 1 point2 points ago

[–]CrabbyMcFartLice 1 point2 points ago

Folk racing is the best kind of racing. Folk racing is a form of motorsports that's usually done on rallycross tracks, where the competitors are only 'allowed' to spend $1000 on the cars they enter in the races. You might be thinking 'well that's easy enough to overcome, just lie about how much you spend on your car!', two things stopping you from doing that; It's full contact racing, and before the race, any of the competitors are allowed to outright buy your car for $1000. So if you spend $5000 tweaking the engine, someone can take it off your for a grand.

It's popular in Finland, but almost unheard of in the states. It seems like the most American thing in motorsports, I'm baffled as to why it's not popular in the states. It is awesome.

[–]btravis72 0 points1 point ago

It's been a few years since I've been into local racing, but Hobby Stock class in the US has something similar. If you read Article 19, it explains that someone can claim the engine, carb, or shocks after a race from any of the top 4 finishing cars.

[–]MyLittleSisterIsHot 0 points1 point ago

Insurance cost. We looked into starting a beater racing league around here and the insurance for one event was almost 6k. So we mostly just run private on on our own property.

[–]MrRollboto 0 points1 point ago

That sounds like the race I went to last weekend. I took photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mr_rollboto/sets/72157631600537253/
