Amateur hour in here. Master level alphabet game is it has to be a word, and it has to start with the letter.

[–]The_Incredulous_Hulk 66 points67 points ago

The way you describe is the only way I ever played. I had no idea that this amateur version of only seeing the letter existed until just now.

[–]flowercup 19 points20 points ago

Probably because you can just use license plates if you aren't looking for full words.

[–]Dear_Occupant 5 points6 points ago

I always thought the license plate game was more fun than the alphabet game anyway.

For those not in the know: you must make the shortest word possible using all the letters in the license plate in front of you, in the order in which they appear. When no one else in the car can come up with a shorter word, the person with the shortest word is awarded 1 point and then you go tailgate the next hapless motorist.

[–]YourFavoriteBandSux 0 points1 point ago

Oh, to me the license plate game was always to make the dirtiest phrase using words that start with the letters on the plate.

[–]Minus-Zero 3 points4 points ago

I play it where anything goes, else it is nearly impossible to finish the game. Never heard of the way you guys play till this thread.

[–]The_Incredulous_Hulk 17 points18 points ago

It's supposed to take a long time. It keeps kids occupied forever looking for that La Quinta Inn.

[–]obilex 10 points11 points ago

I passed a Xerox office once, it was a very proud moment for me as a child.

[–]The_Incredulous_Hulk 1 point2 points ago

Nice! That's what I'm talking about.

[–]gabo2007 2 points3 points ago

Thank god for Nissan!

Nissan Quest & Nissan Xterra, FTW

[–]indi50 1 point2 points ago

Yes, but if takes too long, it gets boring and they give up. After 10 or more trips halfway across the country (and back) with my three and an occasional cousin....it needs to move along fairly regularly.

[–]Minus-Zero -1 points0 points ago

I play to actually win, it is a competition.

[–]hotdoginmyshithole 3 points4 points ago

LOOK, A TREE! TREE. R. YOUR TURN, YOU HAVE S!

[–]kainotna 8 points9 points ago

FUCK YOU AND ALL YOU STAND FOR

[–]qasman 14 points15 points ago

Sign should have said "Quietly X-ray Your Zebra"

[–]sturmeh 8 points9 points ago

What if a radiologist passes by with his Zebra in tow, and attempts to comply with the sign, but causes a pile-up in the process?

That would be reckless signage!

[–]Animystic 2 points3 points ago

This was just an absolutely ridiculous comment.

You goofball.

[–]sturmeh 0 points1 point ago

Why thank you!

[–]qasman 0 points1 point ago

Do you even know anything about drive-by radiological procedures?! GET IT TOGETHER STURMEH

[–]HandmadeMercury 0 points1 point ago

At least it wouldn't be wreckless.

I'll show myself out...

[–]Psychlover53 4 points5 points ago

The way I play, too.

[–]SinofOmission 2 points3 points ago

Maybe the rules are adjusted for different lengths of road trips?

[–]The_Mosephus -1 points0 points ago

whats the point of playing a shitty game on a short trip?

[–]DJWhiteRussian 4 points5 points ago

Exactly. It takes a while to find X, but I'll always EVENTUALLY see those trucks or billboards that say "X-press" "xtreme" or "xtra." Nissan Xterras also count and I'll make an exception for XXX porn store/strip club signs. It's such a rush finding the X.

[–]bariton 1 point2 points ago

What words start with X though? Xylophone? X-ray?

[–]KriSTAR121212 4 points5 points ago

When I played growing up, we would occasionally pass a Xerox corporation building. SO CRUCIAL to win!

[–]rynoconnor 3 points4 points ago

There is a trucking company that puts xtreme or xtra or something like that in red letters. They go up and down the interstate all the time where I live. Only way I have ever gotten x.

[–]funkmastamatt 5 points6 points ago

Nissan Xterra.

[–]gmick 1 point2 points ago

We disallowed vehicles.

[–]delebird 5 points6 points ago

you wont find those spellings in the dictionary, so technically not words...

[–]kabukistar 3 points4 points ago

Those aren't words.

[–]jaygibby22 1 point2 points ago

i play where you can't use anything on vehicles. My X is usually an XXX sign or a railroad crossing sign, as i allow the large X i the sign to be counted

[–]fodrox04 0 points1 point ago

Be that as it may; it still is boggling my mind that the commenters don't realize you're trying to stay a master level game.

[–]darkneo86 0 points1 point ago

And it has to be in order. This sign wouldn't work because, sure, you can get the Q. But the X Y and Z don't count!

[–]qshoe1 0 points1 point ago

a

[–]Revanx17 -3 points-2 points ago

[–]CheifTim 126 points127 points ago

Where is j, that one is also terrible

[–]Robert_Cannelin 61 points62 points ago

Yeah, "X" is easy, it's "J" that's a hard one.

[–]uk2knerf 46 points47 points ago

Look for junctions. Or jeeps

[–]wholovesbevers 94 points95 points ago

Whoa, whoa, whoa... letters off of vehicles are strictly prohibited in my version of the alphabet game.

[–]ZM2N4AiP_A4 19 points20 points ago

Agreed, I fucking drove from Los Angeles to SLO with a friend and we didnt see an X there or back! Fucking bullshit

First letter! We play for keeps

[–]zeronine 34 points35 points ago

No exit signs?

[–]kainotna 24 points25 points ago

Fool! You cannot use a letter that does not begin the word!

[–]zeronine 6 points7 points ago

Guess we had different rules in my family.

[–]WhatIObserve 18 points19 points ago

Because your family used the wrong rules, tough childhood bro.

[–]Dem0n5 9 points10 points ago

He should probably just kill himself...

[–]ChaosPhoenix7 8 points9 points ago

You couldn't have stopped at LAX?

[–]zerosumfinite 11 points12 points ago

Has to be the first letter of a full word.

[–]skyman724 50 points51 points ago

first letter

I am NEVER getting in a car with you!

[–]Minus-Zero 10 points11 points ago

Yeah what are these strange rules.

[–]Mimble_Wimble 14 points15 points ago

Those are the types of bullshit rules that usually creep up when one person gets behind.

[–]Cantfindafuckinusern 4 points5 points ago

I play an easy version where it's any letter of any word anywhere outside your vehicle, including semi ads, car brands and license plates. STILL takes us like an hour to complete. Although, we do only play it on a mountainous highway with rarely any signage at all so cars ate basically the only source.

[–]catpirates 2 points3 points ago

why isn't cars eating shit on the news? this sounds like a big deal.

[–]CatchThisDrift 3 points4 points ago

Fuck those cars, man. Don't they know you need those sources for your game? Jerks.

[–]gerbil_george 7 points8 points ago

Have you EVER found a word not on a car that starts with an X?

[–]verybland 0 points1 point ago

Signs for adult stores that say "XXX" on them. Or a sign for the Xylophone Warehouse.

[–]gerbil_george 1 point2 points ago

Fair enough. Still, those can't turn up that often. I feel like it'd be more fun to just look for letters regardless of placement

[–]Dyl4nTheVillain 0 points1 point ago

Fuck yeah, SLO.

[–]RogueNine 0 points1 point ago

Look a xenophobe!

[–]Pseudophobic 0 points1 point ago

Keeps of what?

[–]LordDamodred 0 points1 point ago

Scion xA, xB? Do car model names on the back of cars count in your games?

[–]ZM2N4AiP_A4 0 points1 point ago

Nissan Xterra also but na we don't use cars, just signs

[–]WhatIObserve 4 points5 points ago

When I'm on x I alway look for porn shops "xxx megaplexxx!"

[–]MrMuffinLoverMan 1 point2 points ago

Crossing, aka xing?

[–]ZM2N4AiP_A4 0 points1 point ago

Dude right?! but they all said "Crossing" not "Xing". We were bitter

[–]kr0n0 0 points1 point ago

Jaguars are great for XJ

[–]chack1 0 points1 point ago

You haven't driven through Misssouri. The number of XXX stores is mind boggling.

[–]uk2knerf 0 points1 point ago

Xpress trucks ftw

[–]the_cryptozoologist 0 points1 point ago

Pph that's not a long drive at all. And why does my hometown constantly show up on Reddit? It's not like it's that big at all.

[–]Minus-Zero 1 point2 points ago

We will never play this together.

[–]PanniculusHam 2 points3 points ago

or these if you're traveling the US

[–]machomike22 4 points5 points ago

Exit 40. Exit 41. Exit 42.

[–]Zeb612 16 points17 points ago

Exit starts with an E.

Doesn't count.

[–]machomike22 12 points13 points ago

I guess it depends on how you play. I never played that it had to start with the letter

[–]Zeb612 30 points31 points ago

Well, it seems that you've never played it right!

[–]nonnein 2 points3 points ago

have you ever actually gotten "x" then?

[–]Jmac91 4 points5 points ago

We played with a exemption rule so that with the letter X and Z it could be in the middle of the word

[–]smsy 1 point2 points ago

I always played that your X word had to start with either X or Ex, excluding Exit, because that's too damn common.

[–]Lawd_of_Spoons 1 point2 points ago

Me and my family played the same way. It was a hell of a lot easier.

[–]Mirior 4 points5 points ago

I've always played that you can use any word that contains an X for X, but everything else has to start with the letter.

[–]Zeb612 4 points5 points ago

Casual

[–]mcgrbr 2 points3 points ago

X is always xylophone

[–]bolongatony 1 point2 points ago

Railroad Xing signs are where I get mine from.

[–]iamagainstit 0 points1 point ago

seriously, every exit sign.

[–]Stang1776 1 point2 points ago

I always hope for a Flying J truck stop at the next exit. Im usually disappointed.

[–]JackTheKing 11 points12 points ago

Came here to write this. Good Job.
J is a little bitch and she knows it.

[–]SumtmesTheMrktWrks 8 points9 points ago

Journey (the dodge), junction, jeep, jalopy, jaguar.

It's tricky though, definitely, but waiting for an X-Terra to drive past is tougher.

[–]Golden_Knight 6 points7 points ago

Also came here to write this. J is a dirty dirty little letter.

[–]Spaceman-Spiff 4 points5 points ago

Lots of Flying J truck stops on the east coast.

[–]ss2man44 0 points1 point ago

I've seen plenty of Flying J billboards in the southeast.

[–]LegifyXentos 5 points6 points ago

point right next to you and say "jerk"

[–]Robots_From_Space 4 points5 points ago

I look at ppl's license plates. Sometimes they have the month they registered on there and you can get jan, jun, or jul.

[–]sturmeh -1 points0 points ago

Its for people who are stuck in the alphabet game, it just lists 4 of the least common letters, its not supposed to have all the letters.

[–]TypicalRunOfTheMill 46 points47 points ago

Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs.

[–]9212 9 points10 points ago

slow clap

[–]SirTubz 0 points1 point ago

What an interesting book, that was. Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn, If anyone hasn't read it.

[–]Xysten 33 points34 points ago

One letter per sign rule, damn you.

[–]Revanx17 7 points8 points ago

Might only need one of them.

[–]iamagainstit 3 points4 points ago

also it has to be in order so no skipping.

[–]jaredcheeda 46 points47 points ago

This picture is so fucking old we've actually added letters to the alphabet since it was first uploaded.

This fucking image, is so fucking old, the first version of it was in ascii.

It's so fucking old it dreams in sepia.

[deleted]

[–]CAPS_SO_YOU_LOVE_ME 14 points15 points ago

Well, fuck.

[–]Sir_Asshole 6 points7 points ago

I hate you.

[–]Greenman62 22 points23 points ago

What's the alphabet game?

[–]mccahan 21 points22 points ago

One of those car games for road trips, where your goal is to locate the letters A through Z in order on signs, license plates, etc.

[–]9212 19 points20 points ago

Essentially it's a way to spend 45 minutes looking for a license plate that has 'J', and a bit later, an antique store and a zoo.

[–]machomike22 9 points10 points ago

I usually pass by La Quinta hotels.

[–]Casper92 6 points7 points ago

Or Quiznos

[–]leftnotracks 3 points4 points ago

Dairy Queen

[–]TheHalfbadger 2 points3 points ago

Ah, I thought it was that game where you have to have a conversation where each person's statement has to start with a particular letter, in alphabetical order, of course.

[–]Plasmashark 2 points3 points ago

But what about ÆØÅ?

[–]Buddhainhair 1 point2 points ago

I just just realized why I didn't know this game. C is hardly ever used in Norwegian.

[–]warm_beer 0 points1 point ago

There's another game called the "cow game".

You count the cows on the left side of the road, and I count the cows on the rights. Start all over again if we pass a cemetery on your side on the car.

Source: Grandma who grew up in the 1930's.

[–]terry_has_boots 0 points1 point ago

Never heard of it. We usually settle for I-Spy.

[–]senorcockblock 3 points4 points ago

None of my friends had heard of this game, I thought I was weird!

[–]kabukistar 2 points3 points ago

X is seriously one of the easiest letters to get. You see exit signs all the time.

[–]imgonnawin 5 points6 points ago

The word has to start with the letter...

[–]ToasterAtheism -2 points-1 points ago

Not in the deep heart of 'Murica.

[–]MajorMol 4 points5 points ago

Bullshit, they have to be full words!

[–]djultomega 2 points3 points ago

Anyone else notice the 'Y' is not needed (because of "you're")?

[–]Th3MadCreator 2 points3 points ago

THAT'S NOT HOW I PLAY THE ALPHABET GAME. I HAVE TO FIND A WORD THAT STARTS WITH THE LETTER.

[–]namrettik 2 points3 points ago

There's one of these around the Tetons/Yellowstone, if this isn't the sign itself.

[–]delebird 0 points1 point ago

I'm in Yellowstone right now... I should look for that sign...

[–]namrettik 1 point2 points ago

I think it was on the road leading going north from Tetons park to Yellowstone.

[–]Tebasaki 0 points1 point ago

Has to be in a word.

[–]lindaumland 0 points1 point ago

yessss.

[–]CorrieTheFrenchie 0 points1 point ago

I go on road trips often, and always hear people talking about this game, but still don't know what it is. Can someone explain?

[–]blablahblah 0 points1 point ago

As you're driving, find something that starts with each letter of the alphabet, in order. So first you look for something that starts with A, then something that starts with B, and so on.

[–]SgtOddball 0 points1 point ago

They have to be in words, don't they? The sign should just say "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog."

[–]TheArgo 1 point2 points ago

That isn't even how the alphabet game works, its the start of the name only. So you would still need to do X Y and Z after Q.

[–]wastingsomuchtime 0 points1 point ago

might be shopped.......

probably mspainted

[–]azerothgod 0 points1 point ago

Nope! Near the Tetons!

[–]wastingsomuchtime 0 points1 point ago

either troll or... do you notice the terrible artifacting going on??

[–]azerothgod 2 points3 points ago

I have literally seen this in real life on my bike across the country.

[–]wastingsomuchtime 1 point2 points ago

oh ok. well this photo appears horribly shopped

upvote for you

[–]azerothgod -1 points0 points ago

Thank you good sir!

[–]azerothgod 0 points1 point ago

Dammit! I had this picture, was going to post, and then never did! That's right after the Three Sisters, correct? Or is that the Tetons?

[–]Amirix 0 points1 point ago

Its missing the D, F, J, K, and V. The sign has every other letter.

[–]GlitchyVI 1 point2 points ago

Got stuck playing this for two days... then we drove by the Zebco factory in Texas. No win has ever felt so sweet.

[–]Mudokon_Tears 2 points3 points ago

I got my win from a Zales billboard while driving through Louisiana. Feels good man.

[–]Kriket308 0 points1 point ago

Fantastic.

[–]Octopusbread 0 points1 point ago

Wait wtf? it has to be the first letter, you can't just see the letter by itself, you guys are playing the pussy version

[–]Ashanmaril 1 point2 points ago

Is "the alphabet game" a popular game or something?

It has its own Wikipedia page, but I've never heard about it until now.

[–]leftnotracks 0 points1 point ago

Takes me back. My dad introduced a rule: You can start anywhere (alphabet loops, so A is after Z unless…) and you can pick a direction. So I might pick X backwards and my dad might pick K forwards. Keeps everybody from getting bunched up on Z and Q (Why X is a hard one I don’t get. EXIT anyone?). Also if a specific letter instance is claimed by one player it is off limits to others.

Edit: Also, all letters are in play. The X in Exit, the J in Jeep, the Q on a Québec plate, etc.

[–]qasman -1 points0 points ago

Needsmorejpeg.jpg

[–]brawnyturtle1 0 points1 point ago

Don't forget ÆØÅ!

[–]The_Atheist_Tiger 0 points1 point ago

X is on an exit sign lined up 4 every mile. That needs a j

[–]Heretical_Fool -1 points0 points ago

Welcome to the Internet, Nlarkin. I'm glad to see the first picture you saw on it is the same one I saw almost 15 years ago.

Enjoy the free pornography!

[–]Hazlzz 0 points1 point ago

I've gone to Dairy Queen while on a road trip just because we couldn't find any other Qs.

[–]G0PACKGO 0 points1 point ago

There used to be a Discovery zone in Madison WI right before the belt line. That was my savior when I was younger

[–]KevSaysGoOsu 0 points1 point ago

The letter "J" would be useful as well.

[–]XylemTube 0 points1 point ago

They even spelled "you're" correctly!

[–]Head_to_toe_legit 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of a game I used to play with number plates; growing in my country the number plates all started with a number followed by two letters (they don't anymore), so we used to make up phrases using those first 3 characters. Eg. If it was 7TF, we could say it was 7 Twirling Frogs, or 7 Total Fools, or 7 Tungsten Fridges etc.

Anyone else used to (or still do) do this?

[–]FootofOrion 1 point2 points ago

I play by car models, not make. Accord, Beetle, Camaro, Durango, Element, Focus, Grand Prix, Highlander, Ion, Jetta, Kompressor, Liberty, Mustang, Neon, Optima, Prius, Quest, Ram, Sienna, Tacoma, Uplander, Venture, Wrangler, Xterra, Yukon, Zephyr

[–]f1r3cr0tch 0 points1 point ago

Not even close. J needs to be in there for real.

[–]dudebro5000 0 points1 point ago

"j" can be hard sometimes too

[–]DocCrooks1050 0 points1 point ago

What's all this talk about using any letter in the word? The game would be over in like 5 minuets. Lame!

[–]csouth3 0 points1 point ago

Well that quite nicely ruins the fun...

[–]Nostrometheus 0 points1 point ago

X is one of the easiest ones. There should be a J on there.

[–]Mercinator 0 points1 point ago

Is it sad that I was more excited they used "You're" properly? The internet does strange things to a man.

[–]EldraziLackey 0 points1 point ago

X is easy, it's in eXit.

[–]GoonSquad44 1 point2 points ago

fuck that shit. What about J? Much harder to find than X or Y.

[–]pomegranatedog 0 points1 point ago

In California, there's a town called Zzyzx. Probably for the alphabet game.

[–]Lasyel 1 point2 points ago

Played that in the car today. They forgot J.

[–]YadaYadaYadaBisque 0 points1 point ago

Imagine how disappointing it would be to see this at the beginning of the trip...

[–]sturmeh 0 points1 point ago

They don't give you V, but they give you a redundant Y, bastards.

[–]becausefahq 0 points1 point ago

abcdefghijklmnopqREPOSTstuvwxyz

[–]Zohwithpie 0 points1 point ago

I do not understand...

[–]Cillantro 0 points1 point ago

WHERE WAS THIS SIGN IN MY CHILDHOOD?!

[–]Taylor_says 0 points1 point ago

Driving through the south, the multitude of antique stores are a life saver.

[–]Lynerd 0 points1 point ago

driving the autoroute 20 through the province of Quebec was an easy one for whoever got to Q first. Once on the outskirts of the suburbs of Quebec City, there's a giant Xerox building, further down the Yoplait (yogourt) manufacturing company and Z was... I forget :-/

[–]Pastogen 0 points1 point ago

You can't get more than one letter from the same sign.

[–]nastyknuckle 0 points1 point ago

There's no V nice troll sign

[–]JackTheKing 0 points1 point ago

This one is found on the I15 between LA and Vegas. This seems to be where the game always ends (after skipping "J"), and Slug Bug begins. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/05/Zzyzx_road.jpg/800px-Zzyzx_road.jpg

[–]madlordofestnoth 1 point2 points ago

Seeing "you're" spelled correctly brought a tear to my eye.
