they had cameras before scissors?

[–]cheZgoodness 50 points51 points ago

They had cameras before happiness too apparently.

[–]iamNebula 15 points16 points ago

"Daguerreotypes" would take ages to take to get the correct exposure. Smiling wasn't an option because you can't hold a smile for long and this would blur the image.

[–]no1_vern 7 points8 points ago

Correct, also:

Niépce had produced the first photographic image in the camera obscura using bitumen of Judea on a pewter plate that required exposures as long as eight hours.

EeeK!

[–]Shanix 108 points109 points ago

Remember those old Civil war pics that were black and white? They were taken with Pre-Camera Cameras called "Daguerreotypes" which got invented ~1829/30. While, at the time, this style wasn't widely accepted, and since scissors were "invented" around 1500BC (Okay, shears technically, but someone made a smaller variant and that's where scissors come from essentially), it's possible they're

  • witches
  • hillbillies of the pre-camera era

[–]gynoceros 27 points28 points ago

The Daguerreotype is a photographic process. The images were still taken using a camera.

[–]abeuntstudiainmores 2 points3 points ago

thank you...

[–]Aaronmcom 8 points9 points ago

Or, that weird religion where you aren't allowed to cut your hair. Starts with a P

[–]Motherdiedtoday 7 points8 points ago

Psikhs?

[–]laphmore 1 point2 points ago

Pentecostal.

[–]eeniemeenieminiemo 4 points5 points ago

As a woman raised within the confines of the Pentecostal/Apostolic religion who isn't anymore, I now have hair above my shoulders lol. I feel freeee!

hillbillies of the pre-camera era

[–]maerdyad 6 points7 points ago

Witches are normal people too.

[–]sassybusdriver 2 points3 points ago

Or it could be a Calotype.

[–]Touringcar 2 points3 points ago

Pre-Camera Cameras

Wut. They're still just cameras, using almost exactly the same techniques as we currently do. Considering these people are standing outside with no further aids to keep them still it's not even that old. The daguerreotype process was invented in 1839, by the way. You're off by a bit. Could've been a tintype, albumen, collodion, etcetera. More then likely just a gelatin dry plate, though.

[–]ScreamThyLastScream 88 points89 points ago

This was actually before hair grew out instead of in. See, back then you were born with all the hair you would ever have and it would grow inwards as you aged. Eventually it would come out of your butt.

[–]hypno_tode 78 points79 points ago

Thank you, Calvin's dad.

[–]nyanbug 1 point2 points ago

you made my day

[–]gijyun 1 point2 points ago

Calvin's dad was really bad, so Calvin hatched a plan...

[–]timasuprema 71 points72 points ago

I thought the fact that they don't have arms was more WTF than the fact that they have long hair.

[–]xj-asylum 40 points41 points ago

This is before arms.

[–]benjetta96 10 points11 points ago

Perhaps they are Cousin Itt's sisters..?

[–]Opee23 105 points106 points ago

This is by far one of the creepiest photos I have ever seen. Its the vacant expressions and the glossed over eyes.....nightmare fuel for sure.

[–]eaterofdog 24 points25 points ago

They look like floating formless wraiths.

[–]cpnHindsight 15 points16 points ago

one of the creepiest photos I have ever seen

/r/wtf is obviously not doing its job, then.

[–]Cepheia 35 points36 points ago

To be fair, this was taken with a "dageurr..." some early as shit camera. The exposure was hours long, up to eight hours to get a proper photo.

So.

They were probably bored as fuck.

[–]bikinininja 20 points21 points ago

hours long.. how do you explain the crisp shadows?

[–]stop___grammar_time 8 points9 points ago

Witches, obviously.

[–]craftycatlady 8 points9 points ago

They should have been smart enough to sit for the photo then instead of standing.

[–]Liberteez 7 points8 points ago

It's the missing arm's/hands.

[–]coolshifts 5 points6 points ago

in the early days of photography it didn't occur to people to smile. also you had to stand motionless for several seconds so nothing looked natural.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points ago

Before arms.

[–]MVolta 49 points50 points ago

OMGWTF PEOPLE WITH LONG HAIR CAN'T UNSEE NEED EYEBLEACH

[–]JeremyJustin 6 points7 points ago

I know, right? My hair is longer than the woman on the left. It's like this picture's somehow WTF because they've got unusual hair and somewhat outdated expressions. OP is a big fat meanie.

[–]C_M_O_TDibbler 116 points117 points ago

During scissors NSFW but its wtf so you really should not need telling that

[–]Zantar 57 points58 points ago

I don't see how I could cut my hair with that but if you insist I'll give it a go.

[–]iamNebula 10 points11 points ago

Just stick your head in between and see. Just the top.

[–]IAmNotACastingAgent 14 points15 points ago

Don't scissor with the runs.

[–]Thecardinal74 5 points6 points ago

This needs to be in GIF form. You know, for science.

[–]C_M_O_TDibbler 23 points24 points ago

[–]dicentra 8 points9 points ago

But now I'm stuck wondering why that one girl has a hospital bracelet.

[–]hey_hey_you 3 points4 points ago

She just came home from the hospital, duh

[–]Trundar 2 points3 points ago

Cancer

[–]natsutonkatsu 2 points3 points ago

Best kind of scissors.

[–]noblestabbings 2 points3 points ago

You're doing God's work here, well done sir.

[–]Username_Storytime 3 points4 points ago

I'm not sure which is better, the name or the comment...

[–]glenlikespie 25 points26 points ago

But if there were no scissors, how did their arms get cut off?!

[–]AxelCaprio 4 points5 points ago

Swords, axes, pure force.

[–]Colbaire 35 points36 points ago

Is long hair really making people say "WTF?"

[–]Gokias 10 points11 points ago

OMG LONG HAIR WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

[–]ComradeButterfly 7 points8 points ago

There's a fine line, nowadays, between sexy long hair and crazy long hair. And still I wish my hair would grow out to be half as long as that =\

[–]CitizenCopacetic 1 point2 points ago

There's even a brush and comb next to them, like it took effort to make their hair only that terrifying.

[–]farkner 4 points5 points ago

The twins from "The Dunwitch Horror".

[–]bionicnipple 2 points3 points ago

If this is how scary they look while alive, I would hate to have an encounter with their ghosts, yikes!!!

[–]bb_cowgirl 8 points9 points ago

I have a very old great aunt who has advanced Alzheimer's. She doesn't know who anyone is but there are 3 things that she remembers and remains steadfast about. 1. She will NOT wear anything but a dress or a skirt, absolutely no pants. 2. She has to wear her bonnet at all times. 3. She will not allow her hair to be cut. When it's down it hangs to her waist.

[–]FunnyFazer 6 points7 points ago

Is it just me or does the one on the right look like Robert Plant?

[–]Samjogo 3 points4 points ago

The one on the left looks like Christopher Walken to me.

[–]deja-vu-comment 12 points13 points ago

I didn't know Edgar Winter and Robert Plant grew up on a farm together.

.

[–]ZackVixACD 3 points4 points ago

I can't stop but think about how creepy sex would be with the lady on the left.

[–]kittypuppet 1 point2 points ago

That's just straight up weird.

[–]thebub77 2 points3 points ago

Wrong. Scissors were found in mesopotamia 3-4 thousand years ago.

[–]jaberwocky69 3 points4 points ago

Well, then this picture must clearly be from before three to four thousand years ago.

[–]petuniababoon 10 points11 points ago

How is this WTF? News flash: women didn't used to cut their hair! gasp

[–]Elsarild 10 points11 points ago

Why is this here? Since when has people with long hair been a wtf?

[–]Arthener 4 points5 points ago

It is most likely that scissors were invented around 1500 BC in ancient Egypt.[1] The earliest known scissors appeared in Mesopotamia 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. These were of the 'spring scissor' type comprising two bronze blades connected at the handles by a thin, flexible strip of curved bronze which served to hold the blades in alignment, to allow them to be squeezed together, and to pull them apart when released. - Wiki But, pretty good joke tho!

[–]maverick_adam 6 points7 points ago

Imagine their pubes...

[–]zleuth 0 points1 point ago

There were vampires before scissors?

[–]helloboy 0 points1 point ago

Where is the guy with the chainsaw?

[–]smacktheknife 3 points4 points ago

How'd they get their arms cut off?

[–]crampedstyl 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a still from a Rob Zombie film. I immediately thought of The Lords of Salem, which I believe comes out this fall.

[–]Demented-n-Detroit 1 point2 points ago

Ah, the cheery disposition of the pious.

[–]Ihazareddit 0 points1 point ago

Before fashion mags

[–]idzivball 0 points1 point ago

I came here expecting a photoshopped version of "after scissors."

[–]zawisza -1 points0 points ago

Cousin IT?

[–]britneyeatshands 1 point2 points ago

Or they believe in old triditions or the bible, because I have tons of holliness people who go to my school. They aren't allowed to wear pants/shorts/shorter skirts or cut their hair. No make up, jewelry or piercings. Long skirts and covering shirts.

[–]captainfreiheit 0 points1 point ago

I guess you'd need arms to operate scissors, anyway.

[–]sommerz 0 points1 point ago

Before arms?

[–]Danez 0 points1 point ago

People cut their hair with razor-blades too. These people are fucking gross though.

[–]bradstuart -1 points0 points ago

[–]chanbrochill17 -1 points0 points ago

shear genius

[–]yes_thats_right -1 points0 points ago

I guess this was before smiling was invented too.

[–]Piscesgurlie4 -1 points0 points ago

This actually reminds me of rural evangelicals in Oklahoma. My great aunt and cousin belonged to a group, where females were never allowed to cut their hair EVER, and were only allowed to ware dresses or skirts with long sleeved blouses. My cousin didn't get to ware pants until she was 16.

[–]musical_stampede 1 point2 points ago

This picture is going to give me nightmares.

[–]KickingItOldSchool -1 points0 points ago

I had no idea Dave Mustaine was that old.

[–]Professor_Iroh 1 point2 points ago

Good God this is scary...

[–]Islandgirl75 -1 points0 points ago

And happiness

[–]wblack55 -1 points0 points ago

Where are their arms?! They got no arms!

[–]bubba_l_s -1 points0 points ago

kinda reminds me of warrel dane

[–]palaner -1 points0 points ago

What if I told you there used to be three women in this picture earlier today?

[–]Temptress75519 0 points1 point ago

My hair is almost as long as the girl on the left. Every time I mention cutting it my family begs me not to. This picture shall be my justification for coming home with a pixi cut lol

[–]Turtle_Shaft 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a cover for a black metal album

[–]UnseenAlchemist -1 points0 points ago

No wonder there was witch burnings.

[–]amraka -1 points0 points ago

Shortly after, they became the scissor sisters.

[–]mehatch -1 points0 points ago

The one on the left is named Paper, to the right is her sister; Rock.

[–]hablomuchoingles -1 points0 points ago

Before scissors, women looked like Matthew Perry

[–]trokker 1 point2 points ago

The most wtf thing is that this has probably been posted 10 times before this.

[–]JOHNNY_GQ 1 point2 points ago

the one on the left looks like the mcpoyle sister from its always sunny in philidephia

[–]TheeFlipper 1 point2 points ago

[–]cellosaremetal 0 points1 point ago

[–]sixsamluke 1 point2 points ago

This is one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen.

[–]ericestro 1 point2 points ago

False

[–]Nosher -1 points0 points ago

They had to grow their hair long so they could use it as arms.

[–]whatsfellatio -1 points0 points ago

Not "before scissors". They gots no HANDS for to use the scissors!

[–]theseekerofbacon 1 point2 points ago

Seriously, where's shitty_titler?

Someone needs to come and take responsibility for this...

[–]panda-man87 -1 points0 points ago

My hair is longer than the woman on the left.

[–]guntfuddler -1 points0 points ago

Welp, didn't want to sleep tonight anyways.

[–]scubaduba10 -1 points0 points ago

Apparently, also before arms.

[–]SwampPirate -1 points0 points ago

for some reason the combination of that image and the word 'scissors' just turned this post into a potential horror movie

[–]FDisk80 -1 points0 points ago

Aliens made those dresses with lasers.

[–]Svarazics -1 points0 points ago

They sacrificed their arms for long hair! Such dedication....

[–]Purplemustachedonkey 0 points1 point ago

Before scissors, after cameras.

[–]Falonation -1 points0 points ago

scissors would be no use, they have no arms

[–]mattyb53 -1 points0 points ago

I bet the carpet matches the drapes.

[–]ryannapoleon 1 point2 points ago

This is not WTF. Maybe /r/woahdude or something else

[–]nal13 0 points1 point ago

[–]heythatsghetto 0 points1 point ago

Good fucking lord that looks like the most depressing house party ever

[–]synthesis11 -1 points0 points ago

This photo is creepy

[–]CrystalDarlene 0 points1 point ago

Cousin It's mom and aunt!

[–]mrzeus7 0 points1 point ago

I know their look isn't quite right, but the first thing that popped into my head was "An image of an angel is an angel". Don't blink!

[–]reazon54 -1 points0 points ago

Well fuck... I'm now going to have nightmares and these bitches will make a special guest appearance.

[–]analsloth 0 points1 point ago

I bet 20 pumpernickels that her hair tastes as savory as the faded wood of my Grandmas favorite rocking chair. Late into the depths of the night when I was sure Grammybear was asleep, I would slither into her room just to get a good taste of that chair. My gums would caress the cracks in the wood along the base causing my gums to secrete blood, that would be my cue to scurry off back into bed. Sometimes she heard me leaving and would follow the trail of blood back into my room and to my bed but by the time she got there, I was well in place to pretend to be fast asleep but she knew better. I remember one time she came in with a cup full of vomit and tipped it ever so slightly above my head, causing it to trickle down my forehead, this was her test to see if I was truly awake and if I reacted to this then I was in big trouble. Grammy would drag her rocking chair into the room and watch me lay there as the vomit made its way down to my neck and had no choice but to lay there motionless and pretend to be asleep. The worst part is, she knew I was awake and pretending to be asleep, but she enjoyed watching me suffer especially since that precious rocking chair was so close. Oh how I had the urge to burst out and say "please Grandma, let me have just one more nibble!"

[–]Joe_Mamma1080 0 points1 point ago

Im sure the carpet matches the drapes...in length.

[–]KevSaysGoOsu 0 points1 point ago

Are they hovering?

[–]Johnny156 0 points1 point ago

Are you sure this isn't "Before Arms"?

[–]DarwinsWarrior 0 points1 point ago

[–]zlkv 0 points1 point ago

[–]Stewpid 0 points1 point ago

Many Pentecost born again Christian women wear long skirts and don't cut their hair do to a biblical interpretation.
