I'm particularly fond of the Waterloo and City line in London.

[–]Thomsenite 26 points27 points ago

It's actually a really useful line though since it goes across under the river.

[–]ilovemygrandmother 6 points7 points ago

For anyone interested it's 1.47 miles long and takes only four minutes to travel from end to end. The line looks something like this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/49/Waterloo_%26_City_Line.svg

As it's primary used by commuters working in the City of London (not to be confused with London) aka Bankers it's only open till 9pm and is closed on a Sunday.

[–]StezzerLolz 3 points4 points ago

Ladies, gentlemen, we have a winner!

[–]HowObvious 1 point2 points ago

Check out the Glasgow underground then.

[–]m_frost 0 points1 point ago

There is a 42nd St and Grand Central line in NYC that is similar, but less useful because it doesn't go under a river. Just from Times Square to Grnd Central. It exists because its the old 1 line track, the 1 line was diverted south decades ago. Just checked, it takes one minute from end to end

[–]Cubix__ 155 points156 points ago

Here's Tokyo because fuck you.

[–]K__a__M__I 96 points97 points ago

Like everything in japan, travelling with the subway is an artform one can only hope to master after a lifetime of training.

[–]pugwalker 12 points13 points ago

not actually that many more lines than nyc just a worse map format

NYC

[–]MrSomeone317 29 points30 points ago

I raise you Moscow.

[–]buttplugpeddler 47 points48 points ago

That looks like the most organized one.

Guess Communism is the way to go.

[–]Niqulaz 28 points29 points ago

The fine thing with central planning. You get to a point where you simply disregard simple things like "reality", and just impose your will upon it by means of a massive state system.

You want a nice, straight subway system? You build one.

Nobody lives near the stations? You raise new apartment blocks. It will keep the people working.

People will still not move into the new apartment blocks voluntarily? Schedule a neighbourhood for destruction, have the housing office assign people to the new apartments.

Some of them protest? Have the KGB find out what treasons to the Soviet Union they are guilty of, and make them disappear.

[–]donwess 41 points42 points ago

That's kinda how I play simcity.

[–]firstcut 16 points17 points ago

That is how you're supposed to play simcity

[–]Zpiritual 3 points4 points ago

There are other ways to play Simcity?

[–]buttplugpeddler 6 points7 points ago

I've been told I have a dry wit.

Sorry.

[–]AldenH 5 points6 points ago

I realized that metro 2033 has the same map. Then I realized that game is in Moscow and that I'm an idiot.

[–]twispy 3 points4 points ago

[–]dovah-kid 27 points28 points ago

Here's an actual map of London's tube, right back at you.

[–]kashiwagi 2 points3 points ago

Well, yours says "rail and tube"...if we play that game, let's have a look at Tokyo again.

[–]TheSilverFalcon 15 points16 points ago

Honestly I just took the Yamanote line in a circle whenever I needed the train, then just walked. It wasn't worth figuring out that shit unless I was leaving the city.

[–]Dottn 8 points9 points ago

Yamanote is part of JR, though. Not Tokyo metro. Different companies.

[–]TheSilverFalcon 16 points17 points ago

The amount I care= zero. It gets me places, so I'm good. Props for knowing, though.

[–]Ensivion 11 points12 points ago

Wow. It must be fairly easy to get across the city.

[–]Keepsitreal_c93 6 points7 points ago

Well easy... if you don't include the sardine like conditions.

[–]DarkAngel216 12 points13 points ago

Oh, I love Tokyo.

[–]Golden_Kumquat 5 points6 points ago

London's full map is equally (if not more) complicated.

[–]tylerbrainerd 4 points5 points ago

yeah, to be fair, the first three from the OP image actually look about that complex when they include all stops and not just terminal stops.

[–]DrKenshin 2 points3 points ago

The only other one I would compare to Tokyo's, not so long ago the second biggest in the world (after Tokyo)... Mexico City's Metro.

[–]studmuffffffin -1 points0 points ago

Do you have a plain black and white one like in the original post? I can't see shit on that map.

[–]batmanmilktruck 1 point2 points ago

Better to have a complicated far reaching subway system then none at all.Try getting anywhere in a hurry in LA without a car.

[–]zyberion 0 points1 point ago

I have a handkerchief with the Tokyo subway map printed on it. Needless to say, I think I pulled that out of my pocket more often than my wallet.

[–]gregorkafka 64 points65 points ago

Reminds me of this one posted in /r/toronto a couple months ago

http://i.imgur.com/t7a6g.jpg

[–]TidalPotential 54 points55 points ago

Houston can't have a subway line because Houston is basically reclaimed swamp.

Seriously the drainage would be so impossible.

[–]FizzyFlapjack 13 points14 points ago

We have a light rail that is virutally impossible to expand because the city is trying to make the entire Metro system better. They haven't even finished with the massive amounts of road work...

[–]gezman 8 points9 points ago

Fucking I-45. How long has that been going on?

[–]DesperateInAustin87 1 point2 points ago

I lived there for 8 years. It was happening when I arrived, and when I left it was still going.

[–]tofagerl 2 points3 points ago

L-train?

[–]Toastar_888 3 points4 points ago

Nah the light rail works, but it's a money thing. The Metro Board really likes buses. The only reason the first segment got built was it was Bill White's pet project. The only reason they've expanded it was because it was a way to bilk money from the feds.

[–]Ateisti 1 point2 points ago

Well, St. Petersburg was built on a swamp, yet they've managed to built a subway also. You'd just have to dig a little deeper than is customary... :)

[–]jsake 0 points1 point ago

check out vancouver's skytrain.

[–]aMillionLasers 12 points13 points ago

Berlin 4.4 Million just sayin'...

[–]JeeWeeYume 6 points7 points ago

[–]aMillionLasers 11 points12 points ago

dude, I bet that plan includes all Banlieues and stuff so there are easy 10 Million inhabitants...

[–]JeeWeeYume 4 points5 points ago

The bright yellow part is Paris itself, without banlieues. It's a 18*10 km area.

[–]heshroot 3 points4 points ago

Paris has amazingly efficient and simple public transit. I visited when I was 16 and had the entire thing down pat in a week.

[–]NeedsToShutUp 2 points3 points ago

[–]grandslamwich 23 points24 points ago

i guess context really is everything, because i don't get the point to the line "context is everything."

[–]gregorkafka 8 points9 points ago

Haha yeah. Transit is always up for debate in Toronto. Crowding on subway platforms at connecting stations during rush hour is crazy so people want a relief line or some other alternative.

It's like this but can really bunch up at times. Crazy when you are inches away from an arriving train.

[–]presumed_nonentity 4 points5 points ago

[–]_Loch_Ness_Monster__ 2 points3 points ago

That was quite a change of pace from the cute pictures of cats Reddit was supplying me with just a moment earlier. Shit got real and dark real quick.

[–]89rovi 2 points3 points ago

I've heard Union can be even worse during construction. Scary thought what with that guy who pushed someone onto the tracks at Dufferin a couple years ago...

[–]Zebezd 1 point2 points ago

I live in Oslo. Our COUNTRY has 1 million less citizen than your city. This is our metro system. We also have trams running on top of that in various other directions.

[–]grandslamwich 0 points1 point ago

thanks for the explanation. for the record... born and raised in houston. :)

[–]misshakalaka 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, Atlanta's MARTA blows!

[–]daemon14 4 points5 points ago

That map is missing the North line to North Springs. At Lindbergh, it splits off to North Springs and Doraville, but it only shows the Doraville line.

Not that it would make a huge difference or anything ... but MARTA is awesome if you need to get to the airport.

[–]pavanky 0 points1 point ago

Not if you work / live in midtown + buckhead :)

[–]danman11 1 point2 points ago

Along with the airport...

[–]Thomsenite 5 points6 points ago

DC only has 600k and about 30 metro stops in the city. SF has about 800k and numerous stops in the city...

[–]RoyaleWithCheese88 0 points1 point ago

SF has about 800k and numerous stops in the city...

You're talking about Muni. Many of its lines run on the streets (like a bus). It only has nine actual subway stations. It's not really fair to compare it to the fully-developed subway systems in other cities.

[–]MrEvilPHD 0 points1 point ago

was going to post TO's subway map. It was the first subway I ever rode. We might be adding on another line sometime soon

[–]RedshirtMiddler 0 points1 point ago

Boston has less than a million people and 4 subway lines.

[–]Staafmixer 63 points64 points ago

The subway network of Warsaw is probably the simplest in the world. http://www.ztm.waw.pl/mapa/metro/metro.png

[–]poon-is-food 79 points80 points ago

beat Glasgow

[–]Staafmixer 34 points35 points ago

don't know whats simpler, circle or line?

[–]vnkid 61 points62 points ago

Had to think about it from the perspective of an organism travelling along the path. I think a circle wins out b/c you only have to travel in one direction to reach any destination.

[–]flying-sheep 10 points11 points ago

then again, you’ll likely know better where you are if it’s a line: a friend of mine lives in a valley with only one bigger street. along the valley are several villages, aligned on the street like beads. people who live there always know where they are, and which direction to go to get to a certain village.

[–]vnkid 3 points4 points ago

Now that I think about it, I don't know why I didn't think lines right away. Circles need the extra dimension, durr.

[–]gcso 0 points1 point ago

Yeah but if you don't know where you're at, who cares? Just keep driving, you'll eventually get there!

[–]davidhoey 5 points6 points ago

Yeah, if you miss your stop in glasgow, you can can just stay on the same train for literally an extra 15-20 minutes and you've gone right round the circle. No extra charge.

You miss it in london? Hell, you might as well give up on that destination.

[–]AppleDane 4 points5 points ago

From what I hear, it's more likely that Glasgow beats you.

[–]freddiefranks 5 points6 points ago

In Soviet.... Glasgow... hang on...

[–]yusernametaken 1 point2 points ago

Is it a monorail?

[–]MickMorrison 4 points5 points ago

No. There is the inner and outer circles. One travels clockwise, the other anti-clockwise. Simple stuff. You can sit and go round all day.

It is electrified. 2 Rails for wheels and a third at the side for power if I recall correctly. Originally cable drawn. Only one station has moved since the subway was originally established. Merkland St was closed and moved about 50ft down the line to become Partick Cross. You can still see the center platform for Merkland St when you cruise past.

3rd oldest underground in the world after London and... Budapest? I forget.

Up until about two years ago an unlimited day ticket was cheaper than a return.

The stations are currently under going renovations and Hillhead is looking pretty swank. Though most people would have rathered the fairs stayed lower and the stations remained in their musky glory.

[–]robert_ahnmeischaft 18 points19 points ago

I love the station names...Stare Bielany, Slodowiec...then, out of nowhere, "Marymont," which to me sounds like a forgotten suburb of Chicago.

[–]1908_WS_Champ 16 points17 points ago

With all the Poles in the Chicago area, I'm surprised it isn't an actual suburb of Chicago.

[–]K__a__M__I 5 points6 points ago

Wanna go east or west? No, you don't.

[–]southpaw05 4 points5 points ago

And I thought Toronto's subway network was simple

[–]usrnamesr2mainstream 0 points1 point ago

pics for anyone interested.

[–]_readit_ 0 points1 point ago

they will get a second line soon

[–]daemon14 0 points1 point ago

The buses and trams make up for it.

[–]bwaxxlo 5 points6 points ago

Red Line FTW!

[–]iLoveHouseMusic 4 points5 points ago

yes, the shittiest one of them all, but i love it. not really.

[–]NyankoLand 2 points3 points ago

Uhm no that's the green line, for sure. Red line is awesome

[–]giantasparagus 8 points9 points ago

At any given point 1-2 of the lines are not working, so if you made a map of the working metro, it would be even simpler.

[–]mgrier123 2 points3 points ago

Alas, this is quite true

[–]NyankoLand 2 points3 points ago

And at any given point 50% of the escalators are broken.

[–]Astraphobic_Thor 5 points6 points ago

Bad memories from FO3

[–]tloftxj 4 points5 points ago

Where is the Silver Line?

[–]mgrier123 3 points4 points ago

Old map I guess, forgot about the silver line as it's not quite in service yet

[–]FallOfAmericanEmpire 4 points5 points ago

Wont be until next summer. Source: I work for a company building it.

METRO OPENS DOORS ......while the trains are moving. I'll never stand by a door again.

[–]LevTheRed -1 points0 points ago

stay off the upper end of the Green Line past 12. you never know if that guy's gonna try to stab you or give you a copy of his new album.

[–]Haasts_Eagle[!] 0 points1 point ago

That map reminds me of this.

[–]KommanderKitten 1 point2 points ago

Thanks to Fallout, I am very familiar with DC's metro system

[–]Buscat 36 points37 points ago

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9c/Helsinki_metro_map_2007.png

Helsinki's makes a lot more sense when shown this way.

[–]tylerbrainerd 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, this is kind of a silly image, as it's only showing terminal stops and simplified geography.

[–]driscoll42 8 points9 points ago

No subway map doesn't simplify geography, it'd be far too complicated otherwise. The addition of the other stops does help, for a minute I was thinking there were really only four stops in Helsinki.

[–]bo87 0 points1 point ago

TIL Helsinki's roads and locations have both finnish and swedish names.

[–]Kuggis[S] 17 points18 points ago

Thank you all for making this a little educational. It's been fun learning about different town's metro systems.

I live in Buffalo and I was wondering when this would pop up. Half of it is above ground and it destroyed most of the businesses on Main Street by closing it to traffic.

[–]stingrayshuffle 11 points12 points ago

Vancouver clearly has the best map.

[–]ofiveo 36 points37 points ago

[–]obfuscation_ 9 points10 points ago

Easily the nicest damn subway I've ever used, although the initial reaction of "Wtf, tokens?" takes a minute or two to shake

[–]chingyduster 5 points6 points ago

Tokens smaller than dimes, so frustrating.

[–]LuckyBug86 4 points5 points ago

This is what we have here in Ottawa - Canada's Capital LOL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ottawa_O-Train_Map.svg

[–]ImNotGoodInEnglish 4 points5 points ago

They call it the O-Train because it shakes so fucking much...

[–]zautner 8 points9 points ago

The Haifa, Israel one is even more laughable (; http://mapa-metro.com/mapas/Haifa/thumb_mapa-metro-haifa.jpg

Did the person Anglicizing the names not know how to read Hebrew letters?

[–]InnerTaunTaun 16 points17 points ago

[–]roboticrad 3 points4 points ago

As a temporary visitor I found Boston's subway to be really easy to navigate (even though the trains are kind of ancient)

[–]InnerTaunTaun 9 points10 points ago

The only aspect of it that I hate is the green line.

[–]klaq 10 points11 points ago

Your population is also slightly different than those other places:
New York City: 8,244,910
London: 8,174,100
Paris: 2,234,105
Helsinki: 601,035

so of corse the transit system is simpler. i'm sure i'll get downvoted by the "scandinavia-is-better-than-everywhere" circlejerk, but this comparison is meaningless.

[–]Vectoor 6 points7 points ago

I'l post this for some Scandinavian pride:

Barcelona one is one of the less "surfacey" metro systems built. Except 2-3 stations, the rest are underground.

[–]robbor 6 points7 points ago

Decisions, decisions . . . .

[–]lezlad 3 points4 points ago

I do love the Helsinki metro. I could take that thing at the age of 10, and I never got lost.

[–]Granite-M 3 points4 points ago

The London Underground map makes an Absolut Vodka bottle. I blame time traveling alcoholics.

[–]brash 6 points7 points ago

How is that in any way even slightly symmetric?

[–]HyperSpaz 11 points12 points ago

Topologically it is. Each line crosses the others exactly once.

[–]rsresnor 4 points5 points ago

Here in Detroit we don't have a subway, we have what's called the "People Mover". It has no operators, or security. It's $1 a ride. It's "fun".

Small city has small subway system.. that doesn't compare to the complexity of those of world capitals.. no shit. 600K people in Helsinki..

[–]ortcutt 2 points3 points ago

On the other hand, Greater Helsinki only has 1.3 million people in 3,000 km2. Greater London has 8 million in 1,500 km2. New York City has 8.2 million in 783 km2. The inner ring of Ile-de-France has 4.3 million in 657 km2.
