I may be mistaken, but this sounds like Christian Scientists. That is the group who choose to rely on prayer with the idea that a strong enough faith will heal them. This is an issue society has with that population, at least it seems to be the only time the group is in the news. They are not forbidden from seeking medical help, but it is stigmatized as turning one's back on God.
