I never noticed this, it could be that I am on an iPod touch or that I updated on the first day that it was available. :) By the way, iOS6 is worth the update unless you need google maps, I've heard apple maps is less than useful.

Be glad you don't live in Seoul. It was playing everywhere at all hours long before anybody in the US had ever heard of it. I've been hearing it several dozen times a day just walking around outside for months now. We've had to make a rule that kids aren't allowed to sing it in class because suddenly the whole class will become chaos as everybody sings and tries to do the stupid horse riding dance.

It makes me laugh that most of the people in the states that like it have no idea what the song is about, though.

I can't say I know what it's like to have to hear this over and over again, because I'm sure it gets annoying. BUT I have literally been listening to it AT LEAST 5 times a day, every day, for 2 months now, and it hasn't gotten old yet.

I read the description of what it was about, but for all I know it could be bogus for all I know, I don't speak Korean. To us it's just a fun song that everybody likes. It's definitely cool to hear what you think of this song though.

Honestly, even 5 times a day I could probably take. I actually liked it when it first came out. But just to give you an idea of how out of control it is here, I just took a walk to the convenience store down the street. It is a walk of about 2 blocks and takes maybe 5 minutes. I heard Gangnam style blaring from no less than 3 shops. Additionally, this is Chuseok weekend, basically the biggest holiday of the year here, and NOTHING is open. Think Thanksgiving travel, and then multiply it by 10. Everybody is gone, nobody is working, nothing is open, and I still hear that song being played from the tiny amount of places whose owners having gone to visit their relatives yet.

I grew up in the midwest but my dad was from Canada. That somehow netted me the nickname Canada in HS and it just kinda stuck with me. I moved to Seoul about 3 years ago.

Its mocking the culture of materialism that's become so popular in Korea in recent years. Gangnam is a very well off neighborhood, and in general having a lot of things is considered a sign of higher status. The song is making fun of that attitude, basically saying how you're not as awesome as you think you are, just because you own a lot of useless shit.

Take the sandbox scene in the video for example. You're not some casanova chilling out on a beach, you're just some chump in a neighborhood sandbox.

Or here's a roughly translated lyric:

I’m a man
A man who is as warm as you during the day
A man who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down

He's making fun of that attitude of "everybody must see me! hey everyone, look at how awesome I am! look at what I can do and check out the awesome stuff I have" that has become prevalent in Korean culture.

For doing what? I have yet to see people using it for something I just can't use my cell phone for. Yeah, it's a little bit easier to do some of the things on the big screen, but it's not as easy to carry around with you or even hold and use as a cellphone.

If I need to do some actual work or something I might as well use a laptop with things like an actual keyboard and so on.

I watch a buttload of Netflix and do a lot of browsing of sites and whatnot. I find the iPad perfect for that, seeing as its portable and has an insane battery. I can hardly stand browsing on an iPhone/iPod and the iPad is so much better for browsing.
