Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

AKA Bad HDR.

[–]MateoDemoni 9 points10 points ago

It looks like an HDR photograph of an HDR photograph.

[–]lychee-twist -2 points-1 points ago

It really needs more pixels.

[–]ArsenicAndRoses 11 points12 points ago

Oh look! A Scottish tardis.

[–]thagrrrl79 2 points3 points ago

Yay! I'm not the only one that noticed!

[–]ohgeronimo 1 point2 points ago

Those were my primary object to find and photograph during the better part of an afternoon when I went there on a trip.

Sadly, most the ones I found were covered in graffiti or vandalized to the point of needing repair with unpainted plywood. Also, padlocked.

Still pretty neat getting to lean against a blue police box in real life.

[–]killertofuuuuu 1 point2 points ago

were you able to open the door and see what's inside? Also if they are no longer used, why did they leave them there?

[–]ohgeronimo 2 points3 points ago

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to open them. Most of them appeared to have a concrete slab as their base, with the four structural posts sunk into it, so I'm guessing it's more costly to remove them than to just leave them be and locked up.

Or perhaps they plan to replace them at a later date with solid concrete ones with video cameras, like in London I think..

[–]da_llama 1 point2 points ago

Some of them have been converted into stalls for coffee/ice cream. Theres a few of them in Glasgow/Edinburgh.

[–]blueocean43 0 points1 point ago

A friend actually bought one of those.

[–]ArsenicAndRoses 0 points1 point ago

They'd make a kick-ass garden shed.

[–]sjhill 7 points8 points ago

Makes Edinburgh look awfully grey.

Although, to be fair, it was pissing down earlier.

[–]Lookmanospaces 3 points4 points ago

Edinburgh is awfully grey. That being said, the time I lived there was the best time of my life, and it's one of my favourite cities in the world.

[–]ademiix 4 points5 points ago

Another ugly HDR photo unleashed upon the world.

[–]HighburyFieldsForeve 10 points11 points ago

Where are the hordes of Japanese and American tourists, the tacky souvenir shops and the thieving neds ?

[–]Calavera190 5 points6 points ago

No, those are over on Princes Street mainly. The area this was taken in is very nice, second-hand bookshops, a fantastic joke/costume shop, Forbidden Planet just around the corner. In fact this photo would have been taken pretty close to Mr Wood's Fossil Shop.

[–]refusal_of_refuse_ma 0 points1 point ago

Is this grass-market? (Haymarket maybe?)

[–]GreatDrok 0 points1 point ago

Definitely the grassmarket. Many a happy bevy there.

[–]refusal_of_refuse_ma 0 points1 point ago

Thank you!

I thought so, I was up for the Fringe and one of my friends performed in a venue there. Absolutely loved it!

[–]GreatDrok 0 points1 point ago

I was part of the Fringe a few times in various plays. Good times. The social life in Edinburgh is awesome.

[–]refusal_of_refuse_ma 0 points1 point ago

I was up for 16 days, absolutely loved it.. I'm hoping to be more involved with next years.. either way I'm definitely going to be coming back soon :D

[–]GreatDrok 0 points1 point ago

I miss Edinburgh for so many reasons and the festival and great student life are right up there.

[–]bannister4102 1 point2 points ago

definitely!

[–]ardbeg 1 point2 points ago

Don't forget the weekend the stag and hen night apocalypse.

[–]shocktatic 0 points1 point ago

I walk past Mr Wood's fossil shop everyday. Always mean to buy something cool.

[–]blueocean43 0 points1 point ago

Don't forget the extremely overpriced vintage shop, and the fabulous shop with the beads.

[–]deek0146 2 points3 points ago

We're all at a party and didn't invite you.

[–]HighburyFieldsForeve 0 points1 point ago

<sob>

[–]keke_kekobe 5 points6 points ago

Is that Grassmarket?

[–]bannister4102 0 points1 point ago

yes

[–]keke_kekobe 0 points1 point ago

I thought so. Stayed in an apartment there when visiting. Love that city.

[–]x-skeww 4 points5 points ago

Was this taken with a potato?

The HDR surely doesn't help.

[–]Bikenutt 2 points3 points ago

Why the fuck would you purposly do that to a photo? FAIL.

[–]on0bi 1 point2 points ago

Whoa, check out the fat TARDIS

[–]GreatDrok 1 point2 points ago

If you lived on fish suppers and deep fried pizza, you'd be fat too.

[–]on0bi 0 points1 point ago

HEY! Fish fingers and custard are good for you! I know because a doctor told me so

[–]GreatDrok 1 point2 points ago

I'm a doctor and I agree, they are good for you.

However, you should note that I'm a Ph.D (from University of Edinburgh), not an MD so you probably shouldn't listen to me :-)

[–]webchimp32 0 points1 point ago

Bigger on the outside.

[–]shiroboi 2 points3 points ago

Look boss, the GRAIN, the GRAIN!

[–]fireheadmt 2 points3 points ago

I visited this castle in 2008, absolutely beautiful, and the people are great. Definitely do one of the bus tours if you go as well, and be sure to go for a hike up in the hills to see the overlooks! So peaceful.

[–]blueocean43 -1 points0 points ago

Which hill though? We have 7. Carlton hill is the easiest to walk up, but arthurs seat ha the best view.

[–]killertofuuuuu -1 points0 points ago

do people still live there? Do you know what the other buildings in the pic are about? Are they shops?

[–]lets_get_better -5 points-4 points ago

Why do you Americans fall for these bus tours so easily. You're just being lied too for an hour and being told an essential fake tale of the culture you're visiting.

If you really want to learn and understand the place you go to, go to the local pub/cafe/anywhere that locals reguarly go and listing to the conversation.

Instead tourists go to tourist bars, buy stuff from tourist shops and never really get a real understanding of the place they visit.

[–]jamie_byron_dean 2 points3 points ago

Bus tours and pubs are not mutually exclusive...

What's so fake about the history they give, anyway? I never had any desire to take one so I don't know, but it's not like I considered bus tours an artificial experience.

[–]ohgeronimo 0 points1 point ago

Bus tours allow you to ride a bus. To be taken to and from your hotel each day, and generally not pay much attention to how you're actually going to get from the ring of Kerry to Edinburgh to Cardiff.

Also, they sometimes have better connections to get tickets to Wicked on a Friday night.

Once you're actually at the place, it's your own damn fault if you choose to go to a tourist shop rather than having a seat to listen to a street band play Johnny Cash and then have a wander before it's time to meet at some lackluster Chinese buffet place.

[–]bobstay 0 points1 point ago

Where did you think Edinburgh Castle was going to be? Toronto?

[–]Teveng 3 points4 points ago

Very proud to see this every day

[–]PencilUpMyNose 4 points5 points ago

Did you really have to put Edinburgh again?

[–]snoworskate 0 points1 point ago

Just went there over the summer, it really is that awesome. Lots of very cool history

[–]vabosa182 0 points1 point ago

one of the most beautiful places i've ever been. living in scotland was a blessing.

[–]Caligrown710 0 points1 point ago

didnt they film hamlet there?

[–]DJWLJR 0 points1 point ago

I was just there a couple of weeks ago.

[–]The_Jish 0 points1 point ago

Me too! The whole country is beautiful, I loved the Highlands. I have lived in Minnesota my whole life, barely left the midwest, and never left the country. My first experience was awesome.

[–]RetroRodent 0 points1 point ago

That sounds brilliant! Good on you for your first choice of destination, may there be many more :)

[–]The_Jish 0 points1 point ago

Sorry for the delayed response, apparently I have no clue how to Reddit. I want to go back so bad. My sister is a second yer Vet student in Glasgow, so it made it easier on me. I'd love to go back in the "summer" with some friends who will actually wake up in the morning and want to explore. There was so much I didn't get to see in my one week there. If you live there I envy you for many things, your country has so much amazing history. It was hilarious hearing how the movie Braveheart was so terribly inaccurate, our tour guide went on about it for atleast 30 minutes.

[–]Leftbehind25 1 point2 points ago

I was there last month and fell in love with that city. I hope to return there one day. Love the picture of the castle. Saw the military tattoo there too and it was spectacular.

[–]A-Kia 0 points1 point ago

My friend had flat on that street, I loved it there.

[–]patman2003 1 point2 points ago

Hey, Grassmarket from outside Budget Backpackers! The Made in Italy cafe a little out of frame was an awesome place for cheap, delicious food and to watch all the crazy pub crawl costumes. I loved Edinburgh.

[–]citizenthom -1 points0 points ago

Didn't realise it was the edinburgh castle time of the month again.

[–]bellapie 0 points1 point ago

Fun fact: that red building is where J.K Rowling sit and got her inspiration for the harry potter books, looking up at Edinburgh castle, imagining Hogwarts.
