  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Oh hey, that my photo!

Photographer here! (Proof?)

Anyway, I have a blog post about how the photo was made, how we actually were standing that close to lava, and a brightened crop of the image to see just how completely awkward our legs were!

Thank you to DaedalusMinion for posting, and I'm glad so many people like it! It was enough for me to log out of my lurker account and make one in my own name. ;)

[–]cantusethemain 11 points12 points ago

I'm interested in buying the print 'Kilauea lava flow by moonlight. March 2012.'

Would you recommend the Lustre, Glossy, or Metallic option? What's the difference?

[–]DallasNagataWhite 9 points10 points ago

Hmm...I think metallic would be pretty awesome with all the contrast - that's what I want to get when I eventually order my own prints. Metallic and lustre look best when framed and behind glass.

[–]gayrudeboys 24 points25 points ago

Send this to the top, folks. Credit should be given where credit is due.

This is a fantastic shot. Keep being awesome, fellow artist. :D

[–]smartparts171 8 points9 points ago

I took a look at some of the work too, it's really well done and quite different from some of the other works I have seen recently. Very enjoyable.

[–]DallasNagataWhite 7 points8 points ago

Thank you!

[–]_XxDerpyHoovesxX_ 2 points3 points ago

There should be a way for OP to gift you the karma.

[–]DallasNagataWhite 9 points10 points ago

Haha, it's cool... I'm usually just a Reddit lurker anyway. I think my other account is about 8 months old and I've never posted from it, so this is the first time I've ever had karma!

[–]DallasNagataWhite 10 points11 points ago

Thank you very much, fellow artist! :)

[–]TheBrainofBrian 1 point2 points ago

Don't tell me what to do.

[–]DaedalusMinion[S] 15 points16 points ago

Hey! It was such an awesome pic, I couldn't resist cross posting.

I just started taking some good photographs (don't have a DSLR yet. :/ ) and this is a kind of photo I hope I'll be able to click!

Well this and this!

EDIT : Found this, not sure if relevant

[–]DallasNagataWhite 13 points14 points ago

Ooh, that's pretty! For when you do get a DSLR, my go-to settings that I use for Milky Way photos: 16mm focal length, ISO 1600, f2.8, 30 second exposure on a tripod. Other photographers might have their different tweaks to that combination, but it works for me :)

[–]DaedalusMinion[S] 2 points3 points ago

Thanks a bunch! Can't argue on the settings when we've got a professional speaking! :)

[–]DallasNagataWhite 5 points6 points ago

Oh, my husband made that 'now kiss' image, haha XD

[–]spyhi 5 points6 points ago

Yep, that is how I felt right before dipping her. I didn't tell her what I was about to do ;)

[–]DaedalusMinion[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thank God she's flexible like that.

If someone dipped me in that posture, I would've broken my spinal cord and some of my ribs. :P

[–]natarem 1 point2 points ago

Do you use a star tracker? Any recommendations?

[–]DallasNagataWhite 0 points1 point ago

No, I'm not that high-tech yet with my astrophotography...I just point at the clear sky for no longer than 30 seconds :) At 100%, the stars are just starting to drag a bit, but you can't tell on wide shots. Someday I want one though!

[–]himynameisthor 3 points4 points ago

Downvote for staged (not /r/perfecttiming), upvote to give photographer credit. Brain hurts.

[–]mrjaksauce 2 points3 points ago

Spontaneous outburst of love captured in a photo != perfect timing? Did you even read that blog link?

[–]QuantumPenguin 5 points6 points ago

That's possibly the best picture I've ever seen! Very well done!

[–]DallasNagataWhite 9 points10 points ago

After I saw it on the LCD, I said, "Okay guys, I think that was the best photo I will ever make...time to start a new career!"...but now I'm just hoping I will somehow top it with a crazy future adventure...to the moon, or something!

[–]QuantumPenguin 3 points4 points ago

Sounds like a plan! Enjoy the moon ;)

[–]yourpenisinmyhand 1 point2 points ago

I was going to say, if this is a real unphotoshopped photo, well done. If this is a shop... well done.

[–]DallasNagataWhite 3 points4 points ago

I am way too lazy to ever shop something this complex ;) Easier to just do it IRL!

[–]yourpenisinmyhand 0 points1 point ago

It is absolutely spectacular! You better enter this into some contests! I saw in the comments that it was in Nat Geo? Awesome!

[–]DallasNagataWhite 2 points3 points ago

Thanks! Yeah, it was entered in NatGeo, didn't place, but got lots of publicity and even a 2-page spread in Digital SLR Photography magazine, so can't complain! :)

[–]yourpenisinmyhand 1 point2 points ago

Congrats, and good luck, you have a lot of talent, and that's saying something nowadays with just about everybody considering themselves a photographer.

[–]HaynBryn 2 points3 points ago

oh hey, that dude who upboated you on twitter is one of my best friends!

And yea, seen your blog, I've noticed some people I know in the military pics! Nice.

[–]DallasNagataWhite 2 points3 points ago

Thanks! Actually shooting the Blue Angels rehearsal at Kaneohe MCBH right now :)

[–]spyhi -1 points0 points ago

Ohey! I know the up-boater, too! He helps with IGDA and HAMA stuff. Small internet ;)

[–]Miroudias 2 points3 points ago

Truly amazing photo. Love it.

[–]DallasNagataWhite 5 points6 points ago

Thank you!

[–]Miroudias 1 point2 points ago

No problem.

[–]OhSeven 2 points3 points ago

The man's legs look rotated 180 from his body. Took me forever to realize whose legs really belonged to who

[–]DallasNagataWhite 5 points6 points ago

Yeah...the dip was spontaneous, and we only took the one kiss shot, but now we know to check our legs next time we're posing like this!

[–]foamingturtle 2 points3 points ago

Keep doing what your doing please.

[–]rhombus2210 1 point2 points ago

I just want you to know your picture makes me want to go on adventures and then have sex on those adventures.

[–]ProphetOfRedditDoom 1 point2 points ago

Honestly the leg placement adds to it. Gives it more energy, more of an action-shot look.

[–]nostrovia 1 point2 points ago

Great photo and really cool website. Why no RSS feed, though?

[–]DallasNagataWhite 2 points3 points ago

On the wishlist for my web guy!

[–]thesearewords 0 points1 point ago

I'm terrified of lava for some unknown reason, and those pictures of you guys poking the lava with sticks made me queasy.

[–]DallasNagataWhite 2 points3 points ago

It did have a weirdly firm, yet squishy texture...

[–]phantom_lord 1 point2 points ago

Amazing strobistry! The stars aligned with this shoot, well done - probably the most impressive non-composite I have seen in bloody ages. This should be on Flickr home page.

[–]DallasNagataWhite 2 points3 points ago

When it rains...break out the strobe! It's our go-to trick ;)

[–]phantom_lord 1 point2 points ago

I'm a non-professional but keen-as-mustard strobist, I just want to know - how do you guys mitigate rain in these types of scenarios? Frankly there is no way I'm getting my gear wet!

[–]DallasNagataWhite 2 points3 points ago

I drowned my camera in pouring rain we couldn't escape only once...now I always have plastic bags on hand just in case...but actually, a light sprinkle works fine for a few strobe shots before packing away the gear if it starts getting heavier :)

[–]baltakatei 1 point2 points ago

The photo has bold aspects of Minecraft.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 2 points3 points ago

You should post your own work on here.

[–]DallasNagataWhite 2 points3 points ago

Is that common in /r/pics? (I'm not in here often) I just worry about being too "Look at me! Look at me!" if I'm posting my own stuff here :)

[–]neuromonkey 2 points3 points ago

Holy carp. I can't believe that's not a composite.

Go back and do it again! You'll be the stuff-done-insanely-too-close-to-lava guy. Probably for the remainder of your tragically short career.

This shot is getting so much attention that you should raise your print prices.

[–]DallasNagataWhite 2 points3 points ago

Stuff-done-insanely-too-close-to-lava girl

FTFY ;) But thanks! The tour company we hiked with said we could go back anytime, so we'll probably take them up on that. Actually though, what we did is completely tame compared to these guys...I can run from slow moving/fast cooling lava, but I don't think I'd risk being boiled alive!

[–]steenarie 9 points10 points ago

This picture is intense! What the hell is going on?

[–]DaedalusMinion[S] 19 points20 points ago

From the original post :

Lava Kiss: "While waiting for the rain to pass, we started taking back-lit portraits of each other in front of the lava flow after I set up my camera on the tripod. For the last photo, my husband spontaneously dipped me in a kiss." Dallas Nagata White

[–]steenarie 16 points17 points ago

I still like to believe it was some Michael Bay produced wedding shoot.

[–]DaedalusMinion[S] 20 points21 points ago

I wish my wedding was done by Michael Bay.

'Kiss the Bride'...BOOM BOOM BOOM

[–]steenarie 7 points8 points ago

A race car drives up the isle kicking the bride out of the car at the alter while shooting blanks at ex boyfriends in the pews. And all the brides maids are Victoria Secret models.

[–]spyhi 0 points1 point ago

And the racecar is driven by an alien that looks suspiciously like a mutant turtle. Oh, it also knows Ninjitsu for some reason.

[–]Palpatine 0 points1 point ago

You know, a real Daedalus can just take off when you kiss.

[–]Animatronia 1 point2 points ago

I agree...molten lava crisis aversion kissing?

[–]FausterChild 0 points1 point ago

Molten lava to the left, rain/ash coming down from the sky, and headlights/flashlight behind them.

[–]ItsReallyJustAHorse 30 points31 points ago

JUSTJUSTJUSTJUSTJUSTJUSTJUSTJUST

[–]DFGdanger 11 points12 points ago

ahorseahorseahorseahorseahorseahorse

[–]kurin 5 points6 points ago

Of course.

[–]fullcircle_bflo 7 points8 points ago

This picture actually has very little to do with timing.

[–]zombies_r_us 2 points3 points ago

Every photograph has to do with timing.

[–]hawaiian0n 2 points3 points ago

Artist Credit: Dallas Nagata White Here's her blog post about it. http://dallasnagatawhite.com/2012/07/lava-hike/

[–]LM2500 7 points8 points ago

Definitely looks like the guy's leg is broken...

[–]spyhi 13 points14 points ago

Photographer's husband here: No, none of our legs were broken, but we didn't exactly plan this shot and we weren't trying to get it perfect. We were just goofing off :P

If you want, check out my wife's behind-the-scenes post, where she posted a over-exposed 100% crop to show exactly how we were posing :P

[–]Fulgere 8 points9 points ago

"check out my wife's behind" I read that wrong...

[–]Squalor- 3 points4 points ago

What if he only has one leg and he's balancing his stump on her leg?

[–]Cocomaan 0 points1 point ago

Precisely.

[–]J055A -4 points-3 points ago

His lower body is facing the opposite way as his upper body. Perfect Timing my ass...

[–]thestarsallfall 0 points1 point ago

that's actually the chick's leg.

[–]DallasNagataWhite 2 points3 points ago

I wore manly pants that day...

[–]UnlessNothing 0 points1 point ago

They were soon engulfed by the fires of mount doom.

[–]spyhi 1 point2 points ago

No, but the One Ring replica we brought along was ;)

Edit: Home now, and found the proof. Yes, we are also geeks.

[–]Alecohol 2 points3 points ago

Step Up 5 movie poster

[–]spyhi 1 point2 points ago

Man, all the people saying the image is photoshopped makes me sad because they dismiss that this is possible outright, meaning they'll never even try.

Seeing lava IRL was probably one of the most incredible experiences of my life, and it's one non-believers will never even think to have :(

Source: I was in that picture.

[–]TheSemiTallest 3 points4 points ago

I feel like anyone that close to molten lava should probably be wearing some type of protective clothing...

[–]TheEllimist 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, usually when people stand that close to lava, they're at least wearing some sort of reflective suit to protect them from the radiative heat.

[–]spyhi 1 point2 points ago

We made sure to wear leather and natural fibers, but it turned out not to be necessary when we got there :P

[–]clinojim 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, that seems faked, or incredibly dangerous. A couple of my geology classmates took a summer course in Hawaii, and the number one safety rule they had impressed upon them was DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET SURROUNDED. Standing that close to flowing lava it seems incredibly easy to be overtaken and surrounded.

[–]spyhi 4 points5 points ago

While this is true, there are lots of different kinds of lava. Some are hot and flow pretty fast, the kind we were close to was cooling pretty quickly and moving veeeery slowly. A snail could have escaped that particular flow with ease ;)

Edit for source: I'm the guy half of the photo.

[–]TexasHokie 0 points1 point ago

Yea, I remember learning in school that lava can scorch you from 4 ft away.

[–]stfu_bobcostas -1 points0 points ago

I'm with this guy.. They seem to be standing way too close for that to be possible. I can't imagine anyone in their right mind would even let them stand where they are, there's no way to tell for sure if its even stable. Either very photoshopped or very stupid

[–]spyhi 2 points3 points ago

We were about 15 feet away, and I can assure you we were quite safe. Tour guides take hundreds of people to the flows every day, unless conditions (which they monitor assiduously) become risky.

[–]Black_Delphinium 0 points1 point ago

That would make an awesome album cover.

[–]TheAmishSpaceCadet 1 point2 points ago

this was also posted to /r/pics a few months ago. i remember it because it's so beautiful

[–]Unstolen_Jewel 0 points1 point ago

This pic was so epic it immediately made Adagio in D Minor pop into my head.

[–]wanderlusten 1 point2 points ago

Interview with the photographer here.

[–]Tackers369 -1 points0 points ago

And then they burned to death.

[–]Rorschach2012 1 point2 points ago

[–]Scadilla 1 point2 points ago

Same thing I thought.

[–]Jryanjohnson 1 point2 points ago

All this thig is missing is a lightning bolt and a cougar driving a Bugatti

[–]SubieRuby 0 points1 point ago

this would be a nice background without the kissing though

[–]spyhi -1 points0 points ago

If you check out DallasNagataWhite's blog post, she actually delivers just that ;)

[–]Suitecake 1 point2 points ago

That doesn't look very comfortable

[–]SatinHandyWipe 0 points1 point ago

It's awesome. But not "perfectTiming"

[–]Cazum8 0 points1 point ago

He farted.

[–]elbruce 1 point2 points ago

Remember to suck out the virgin's soul through her mouth before hurling her into the lava pit as a sacrifice.

[–]clb92 0 points1 point ago

Hey, did you make that Source Filmmaker "Call Me Maybe" (with Sniper and Scout) cover yet, by the way?

[–]Na0s -1 points0 points ago

Repost!

[–]Quatroking 1 point2 points ago

What this photo doesn't show is that this couple violently burned to death seconds after it was taken.

[–]dogsarentedible 0 points1 point ago

And then they died horribly.

[–]RzK 1 point2 points ago

Before

and

After

[–]poonslyr69 0 points1 point ago

And seconds later her back was broken while he was set on fire.

[–]BenyLava 1 point2 points ago

Epic couple are epic.

[–]userbelowisamonster 0 points1 point ago

So this is what it looks like at conception

[–]VoiceoftheDarkSide -1 points0 points ago

Someone came his pants REALLY hard.

[–]Mechagod 0 points1 point ago

Ya like a 103-year-old man, whose testicles have diminshed organically to a point that any sperm is in grainy form.

[–]systmh 0 points1 point ago

So much of r/perfecttiming is not timing at all, but instead careful and detailed scene setup and preparation.

Not that that makes this any less awesome of a photo. I love it. Just wanted to share something that bugs me sometimes.

[–]DMNDNMD 1 point2 points ago

Obi-wan and Anakin?

[–]JeremyKean 0 points1 point ago

Seems like there's a pretty huge fucking window of opportunity to take the shot seeing as that stuff is continuously falling from the sky.

[–]SweatpantsDV -2 points-1 points ago

Should have been under /r/extremelystaged.

[–]1337jokke -5 points-4 points ago

/r/PerfectTiming you say? how about /r/photoshop

[–]Brainderailment 4 points5 points ago

Either way, timing has nothing to do with what makes this picture cool.

[–]1337jokke 0 points1 point ago

true...

[–]DaedalusMinion[S] 2 points3 points ago

Not shopped. Here's the article explaining the shoot and also the RAW file.

http://dallasnagatawhite.com/2012/07/lava-hike/

[–]1337jokke 0 points1 point ago

Oh! Thanks for clarifying this for me :)

[–]DallasNagataWhite 0 points1 point ago

Like I said earlier, I'm far too lazy to Photoshop something this complex.. easier to actually do it ;)

[–]spyhi 0 points1 point ago

Yep, definitely easier to fly to another island, hike four miles (each way) up a volcano with forty pounds of stuff and hope for rain.

We really need to learn Photoshop, honey :P

[–]one_more_hour -2 points-1 points ago

so you went to an incredibly unique and interesting place...and managed to take the photo that every single wedding photographer shoots at every wedding reception, ever.

[–]NomadicDjinn 2 points3 points ago

as a goof off shot.

[–]one_more_hour -2 points-1 points ago

I just think it totally takes away from the location. I wish the backlight was several stops lower to not take away from the ambient so much.

[–]spyhi -1 points0 points ago

  1. Go look at the other shots we took FFS

  2. I look forward to your version :)
