Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

More information. It's a bridge to Fort de Roovere in the Netherlands. The bridge doesn't float, as some people have speculated. The bridge goes through a moat, so water level rarely changes. The height of the water is further controlled by two adjustable dams on both sides of the moat, There's also a pump underneath the bridge in case of overflow

[–]QJosephP 17 points18 points ago

Now time to build it in Minecraft.

[–]Marsupian 12 points13 points ago

Indeed, it was also featured on archdaily a while back.

[–]CARVERitUP 73 points74 points ago

Wrote a comment about flooding, then read this and deleted my comment.

[–]Figgots 28 points29 points ago

Reddiquette. Super simple stuff.

[–]Howdy_McGee 58 points59 points ago

Good on you Jim

[–]Redeye420 32 points33 points ago

Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a magical floating bridge expert!

[–]blooregard325i -1 points0 points ago

Magical non-floating bridge!

[–]edwartica 0 points1 point ago

Right, that's the first thing that came to my mind. Living near a river that is never the same level does that to a person.

[–]Quatroking 3 points4 points ago

In other words, a nice example of Dutch water tech. Pumps and moats and stuff.

[–]powernut 0 points1 point ago

A nice example of Dutch military ingenuity: build a moat, then build a walkway through it.

[–]UncleS1am 5 points6 points ago

I was going to say.. a good rain and suddenly you have a not-so-moses bridge.

[–]Taliesintroll 3 points4 points ago

More of Noah type... Thing.

*edit: tunnel?

[–]CitizenPremier 1 point2 points ago

And I presume if it does flood it doesn't take long to walk around it.

[–]Nah_Im_Playin 1 point2 points ago

I love people like you.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 1 point2 points ago

Cool, that was my question.

[–]stillalone 1 point2 points ago

Any reason why they did that instead of just putting a normal bridge.

[–]MusicCityVol 12 points13 points ago

According to the archdaily article linked by Marsupian it was an aesthetic choice influenced by the history of the site.

"It is, of course, highly improper to build bridges across the moats of defense works, especially on the side of the fortress the enemy was expected to appear on. That’s why we designed an invisible bridge."

[–]lynxlairliar 104 points105 points ago

Imagine this but with thick glass.

[–]kinslayer72 221 points222 points ago

Don't tell me what to do.

[–]edwartica 7 points8 points ago

Holy smokes, given what you just said and your username, I thought you were my ex girlfriend! She says that all the time and she has used the term kin slayer as a username.

I had to look at your comment history to find out you are not her.

[–]A_glorious_dawn 4 points5 points ago

I do something like this almost everyday on reddit.

Edit: it's never them

[–]kinslayer72 1 point2 points ago

How do you know I'm not her? I could have set up this account years ago, knowing the whole time we would break up, making comments as a different person the whole time. Just to FUCK with you. Doesn't that sound like something I/she would do.

[–]edwartica -1 points0 points ago

It's possible, but that would be pretty mean of her - considering this account is no more than two years old, and we broke up over two years ago.

Besides, there's no way she would know that much about hockey. ;)

[–]89rovi 1 point2 points ago

I'm guessing the edge between the wall of the bridge and the water is actually a drain which keeps it from overflowing.

[–]slagathor51 8 points9 points ago

A drain to where?

[–]Mahatma_Ghandicap 8 points9 points ago

China

[–]EnaBoC 1 point2 points ago

Read the title as "Mooses Bridge". Was expecting some damn mooses!

[–]BlinkOh 3 points4 points ago

Bad thing is I've seen this picture before, and was trying to figure out how I missed the moose the first time I saw it.

[–]dfcdiving 22 points23 points ago

Thats really cool but couldn't they have found a nicer body of water to build it in?

[–]themanfromreddit 18 points19 points ago

The Netherlands is below sea level so we have these ditches everywhere. They're used to drain the groundwater otherwise half of the country would be under water and also to prevent flooding when it rains.

Most of the larger ditches are connected to canals so the water streams and stays a bit cleaner than this. In urban areas you'll see smaller ditches like this one which has stagnant water. In any case most of the soil here consists of clay so even streaming water is brown.

[–]Major_Dick 7 points8 points ago

Probably can control water level easiest there.

[–]Aleriya 0 points1 point ago

This bridge was built over a moat in a historical defensive structure. The bridge was built that way because it would look wrong to have a giant walkway over the "impassable" moat. This way the bridge is hidden, and the structure still looks similar to the way it did a hundred years ago.

[–]Outi5 16 points17 points ago

If only it wasn't crossing a septic reservoir...

[–]theluckyshrimp 4 points5 points ago

the Mooses' bridge?

[–]Rhytmdvl 3 points4 points ago

Thought it was a wildlife corridor.

Asked myself, "where's the moose?" Said "I don't know."

Then some childhood crush came out of nowhere and dumped a bucket of green slime on me. Rest is NSFW...

[–]CidO807 1 point2 points ago

Looks like the bridge to the first blacksmith in Dark Souls.... Reality needs to quit stealing ideas.

[–]redditwithafork 1 point2 points ago

the forces exerted on each wall makes me cringe! How does it not collapse the walls in on each other? MAGIC!

[–]Scisyhp 3 points4 points ago

Well-founded concrete with rebar is very strong.

[–]redditwithafork -1 points0 points ago

fuck that, haven't you ever seen engineering disasters on Modern Marvels? All it takes is a small dance contest to make shit crumble!

[–]Piggycow 0 points1 point ago

If it was designed or built like utter shit

[–]OmarDClown 0 points1 point ago

Water pressure sort of defies logic (my brain's logic, at least). You wouldn't cringe to think of a boat that has a keel 4 feet below the surface. It doesn't matter how much total water there is, only how deep.

[–]atturent1 6 points7 points ago

This was posted literally two days ago...

[–]Danny_Bomber 41 points42 points ago

as opposed to metaphorically two days ago?

[–]MrBojo 19 points20 points ago

Perhaps he's talking about the proverbial two days.

[–]TheNev 0 points1 point ago

P O S T C E P T I O N

[–]wphillip560 4 points5 points ago

As opposed to the exaggerated "two days" ago. I hate when people misuse "literally" as much as anyone, but it was appropriate here.

[–]Danny_Bomber -3 points-2 points ago

so a hyberbolic two days is what we are talking about here?

[–]GeorgeTaylorG 0 points1 point ago

I've seen three people complain about the use of "literally" in the last ten minutes. Literally is the new gem.

[–]White_Luigi 40 points41 points ago

[–]desertjedi85 5 points6 points ago

[–]Peetrius 5 points6 points ago

[–]tranceyan 0 points1 point ago

It was a joke.

[–]Jeremy252 1 point2 points ago

Not a very good one.

[–]tranceyan 0 points1 point ago

Thank you, reddit joke evaluator.

[–]akatherder -1 points0 points ago

I think he was supposing that Apple Maps told you to walk across a river, which typically isn't possible (without a bridge or a frozen river).

[–]White_Luigi 1 point2 points ago

Well good thing there's a bridge.

[–]breezytrees 1 point2 points ago

good thing i'm moses.

[–]Yrrebbor 0 points1 point ago

Awesome design! And yes, it would be improper to build a bridge on the side where the enemy was expected to arrive from.

[–]TMorrii 1 point2 points ago

FUCK YOU BITCH I'M MOSESING!!!!!!

[–]infernal_llamas 1 point2 points ago

also called the "oh shit rainstorm" bridge

[–]Khoeth_Mora 1 point2 points ago

I love uniqueness like this, but I am surprised such thin walls are able to avoid collapse because of the mass of water they are holding back. Impressive!

[–]countdownkpl 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of making paths in roller coaster tycoon.

[–]BranFlakes188 0 points1 point ago

Very cool. I believe an artist did a very similar thing but in a large mirrored room with oil. Was apparently quite disorienting.

Edit: Just looked it up; was Richard Wilson, a work called "20:50" in 1987. The path doesn't extend all the way through the room, though. Still, quite similar.

[–]Fleshflayer 0 points1 point ago

Oh.

This is a unique post.

[–]TheAydenClay 0 points1 point ago

I'm curious about if the water levels raise what happens to the bridge; does it raise with the water? Or what? sorry I've not got time to search, I only allow myself so long to procrastinate.

[–]DracoOculus 0 points1 point ago

Guess what happens when it rains.

[–]32Dog 0 points1 point ago

[–]civilengineer 0 points1 point ago

[–]MONDARIZ 0 points1 point ago

Would someone explain to him what a bridge is. A bridge goes over the water, remember that, over.

[–]erichermit -4 points-3 points ago

So we're all speculating how it manages to stay at the perfect height. I think that the "bridge" actually floats.

Notice how the floor is fragmented? I think those are stairs that fold down if the water level rises or falls.

I'm actually probably wrong here, but this is just a wild guess on how they could manage to maintain that.

[–]TheSemiTallest 5 points6 points ago

Even if the floor could move, which I bet it can't, the walls certainly can't. You can see the ends of the bridge, where the stairs start to go upwards, that there isn't a channel for the concrete walls to move. They are rigidly in place.

[–]workpuppy 3 points4 points ago

I'm not sure they could make movable sections that would stay perfectly waterproof.

My money is on water level in the pond itself being maintained via pumps and drains.

Okay, looked it up. Here is a link from the architects site. The "Bridge" is made of wood, and it's sunken because the water is an old moat, and they felt it'd look stupid to have a foot bridge over a moat.

[–]Determinism55 2 points3 points ago

Even if you're wrong, it's a cool idea.

[–]flounder19 2 points3 points ago

I bet the water is actually gelatin

[–]morganhondam 1 point2 points ago

That would indeed be awesome, but I think you're wrong. See, the handle bars would not be able to fold over, not only because they aren't fragmented at the vectors (or points, whatever), but because the length would be different when horizontal. Also, the walls. The steps can do what you said, but not the walls. They would have to move up with it, to effectively raise the bridge, which they cant when there is the rise.

[–]LtlAnalDwlngButtMnky 0 points1 point ago

But if Its a reservoir they can just pull more water from it right? I feel like there is an automated sensor that activates when the level gets too high.

[–]Kosard -1 points0 points ago

Do this over the ocean and you have your god.

[–]deftw -2 points-1 points ago

Cool, but what if it rains and the water level rises?

[–]TheSoundAurora -4 points-3 points ago

Seems more like a tunnel than a bridge to me.

[–]daafe -3 points-2 points ago

minecraft

[–]gibstergg 0 points1 point ago

is a great game made by Markuss Perrson and his team of developers.

[–]Pioustarcraft -3 points-2 points ago

EPIC REPOST ! glad to see your spaming finally paying :)

[–]Maurier -3 points-2 points ago

Ironically I find this too be the most true representation.

This is how Moses parted the sea, not with magic but by simply using his head and telling followers to pile up rocks.

[–]Mazo 5 points6 points ago

Yes, rocks are well known for being perfectly stackable with no gaps between.

In other news, water now cannot fit through small areas.

[–]pepe74 1 point2 points ago

No thousands of years ago water was unable to pass through small gaps. But, as with all things, nature finds a way.

Either that or water is a clever girl and just kept testing the stone wall for weaknesses.

[–]notaverysmartman 0 points1 point ago

Go back to /r/atheism and get hated over there as well because this is the worst explanation
