I never want to hit the ground hard enough for my shoes to fly off

[–]Spliffa 43 points44 points ago

Or to touch my belly button with my chin.

[–]ganymede_boy 30 points31 points ago

[–]Rubyrues 14 points15 points ago

Every time I see that I cringe. Every time. And I don't even have to watch it.

[–]d_spaceley1 3 points4 points ago

his skills at taking huge tumbles prevailed tho, he managed to walk away

[–]irtehscarry 3 points4 points ago

ow... ow ow... ow...

never getting on a trampoline...

[–]HockeyBein 0 points1 point ago

my back hurts now

[–]illaqueable 4 points5 points ago

Srsly. Those things came off in a hurry.

[–]ganymede_boy 59 points60 points ago

Jake Brown 2007. He did not die.

[–]ericrox 29 points30 points ago

I can't believe he made the 720.. best line from the video.

[–]Xanthu 10 points11 points ago

"HIS SHOOOOOOOES" I honestly remember saying this with the guy when it happened.

[–]Timett_son_of_Timett 1 point2 points ago

My friend thought they were his whole feet... I don't keep good company.

[–]pikacthuhlu 5 points6 points ago

I remember watching this. He got up and walked away after maybe five minutes.

[–]LiQuid3600 4 points5 points ago

I actually saw this happen on live TV. I thought he died then and couldn't believe he got up and walked away on his own power.

[–]Pielikey 2 points3 points ago

I remember watching this and when I saw the board go out from under him and thinking "oh fuck"

[–]UnrighteousFool 33 points34 points ago

He walked away from that.

[–]Prodigy195 29 points30 points ago

I remember watching that live with my roommate. My first thought.....well he's dead/paralyzed.

When he got up and walked away.... O_o..."He's not human".

[–]NothingtodohereOGW 6 points7 points ago

One time I fell face first from the top bunk and landed on my neck...my first thought was "Am I dead?" then I opened my eyes and saw my foot in front of my face, wiggled it, and got up off the floor with just a tiny scratch above my eyebrow. That was a bit of a "what the fuck" moment for me.

[–]Prodigy195 3 points4 points ago

What's crazy is that people can fall wrong from normal stand height and end up dying. How you fall makes a major difference.

[–]NothingtodohereOGW 1 point2 points ago

What's really funny is that it was the night before mother's day and my mom and dad heard the commotion from the fall and for some odd reason dad thought it would be a great time to wish mom a happy mother's day. ಠ_ಠ

[–]JacksonBollocks 1 point2 points ago

In superslomo the rotation he made actually broke his fall real nice

[–]graffiti81 1 point2 points ago

Watch Bob Burnquist's runs at the Xgames this past summer. He hurt his hip in qualifying and then proceeded to win the big air competition after slamming his hip a second time on the lip on the edge of the ramp. And he's like 35.

[–]ComplainsAboutDvotes 26 points27 points ago

Can't have hurt that much, he was falling so slow.

[–]sotech 8 points9 points ago

He didn't make any sound either, so it can't have been that bad.

[–]knappster99 12 points13 points ago

If one were in that situation, whats the best way to land? On your butt like this guy or is there a better way to reduce injury?

[–]Stiverton 12 points13 points ago

[–]Alix1723 6 points7 points ago

Also, contract your buttocks so that water does not rush in and cause severe internal damage.

Oh. Good to know.

[–]silphscope 1 point2 points ago

I would like to know this as well and am too lazy to google it.

[–]WrexShepard 1 point2 points ago

Well, ideally you'd want to be able to tuck and roll out of it, but it would definitely depend on where you hit the ramp.

[–]mindbleach 0 points1 point ago

Presumably the important part is not slamming your knees, spine, or head into the ramp, or locking any joint and hyperextending it. Bend a little and try to maximize the time between first touching the ground and coming to a complete stop. It's not the fall that kills you.

[–]chetlol 0 points1 point ago

I'd say they way he landed is about as good as you're gonna get. He let his legs absorb most of it, but kept them relaxed so they'd just absorb the blow with little resistance. You definitely don't want to land with your legs straight and locked. The spinal column, head and chest are all pretty bad too.

[–]Emorgaron 4 points5 points ago

Someone should have thrown him a skateboard while he was falling.

[–]Dodecadildo 4 points5 points ago

The X Games provide a lot of Holy-Shit-That-Just-Happened moments and for me at the time this was the most intense, but it was quickly topped when 10 minutes later he walked off under his own power. A decent percentage of people die from 50 foot falls, and Jake Brown simply picked up his iron-clad balls and walked away.

[–]MemeTLDR 7 points8 points ago

I watched this live and I seriously thought he was dead. I screamed at the top of my lungs and my entire family ran into the living room and thought he was dead too.

[–]upvotedogs 8 points9 points ago

me too my whole family came running and touched my balls, i then smacked my head against a window and people started drinking soda. shit was hilarious.

[–]GWilson1297 0 points1 point ago

I'm here for the circlejerk.

[–]mirrordog -1 points0 points ago

Same here. I thought for sure that I had just witnessed someone's death. I was on the verge of tears and then the dude got the fuck up! Amazing.

[–]RICH_LITTLE 1 point2 points ago

Does anyone know the consequences of this fall? Looks like some pretty serious whiplash he suffered.

[–]So_Many_Hot_Camels 7 points8 points ago

He got up and walked away and had a brief admission to the hospital. No lasting damage.

[–]Krispyz 1 point2 points ago

Tell me your definition of "lasting damage". I feel like a bleeding liver and a fractured vertebrae qualify.

[–]spritef 0 points1 point ago

yea.. he was fucked up internally, i didn't remember exactly what happened, but it wasn't just a bruise after he got up.. he got a little bit jacked up.

[–]Blame_The_Green -1 points0 points ago

He's got some skill.

[–]ADAYATTHERACES 1 point2 points ago

Make it or Jake it!

[–]Sharzona 0 points1 point ago

I lost it at the shoes.

[–]everyday_youtuber 1 point2 points ago

He is very skilled, at the last moment he seemed to calm the shit down and land properly.

[–]misterfrank 0 points1 point ago

I remember watching this, crazy as hell. Can't believe he only left with some bruised ribs and a concussion.

[–]adn5027 0 points1 point ago

The entire length of his long, slow fall, I was sitting here with a cringe on my face goin "oh no ohhhhhh...ouch."

[–]ChikenArmy 1 point2 points ago

This is one of my worst nightmares just falling and not being able to do anything about it knowing your gunna get hurt

[–]Coolbreezy 0 points1 point ago

Shit. How bad was his back after that?

[–]ugh_next 1 point2 points ago

I'd request someone stand at the bottom with a mattress nearby ready to slide it under me if something like that was about to happen!

[–]tamnoswal 0 points1 point ago

I got jumped by some agro man-child while at a high school football game once. The glandular freak tackled me so hard my shoes flew off (or maybe stayed put) as my body rocketed violently towards the ground.

I know that feel, bro.

[–]SSJwiggy 0 points1 point ago

I have no idea why I read the title as "Big Air Chameleon". I guess I assumed that was the name of the skateboard trick.

[–]slowitdown 0 points1 point ago

It kinda sucks that he's only really known for this horrific slam. He's actually an incredibly talented skateboarder.

[–]Lady_Tata 0 points1 point ago

I remember watching that when it happened on TV. The first thing I thought was "how fast was he falling?" My bro and I estimated that he hit the ground going about 35-40 mph.

[–]104372 1 point2 points ago

Far as I can tell he was falling for ~7s so since gravity = 9.8 m/s (roughly) he was falling at 68.6m/s:

68.6m/s * 60 = 4116m/minute = 4.116km/minute = 246.96km/hr

246.96km/hr * .621371 = 153.45378... m/hr.

Terminal Velocity = in that position = ~120m/hr

Conclusion: He was falling at ~120m/hr

Granted my math is probably way off considering I don't remember how to account for air res in his acceleration.

So:

Conclusion: Conclusion: Only correct if there is no Air resistance up until terminal velocity would be reached.

[–]Solidslip 0 points1 point ago

9.8 m/s/s that's right for earth in void right? With air friction probably less? Am i right? I don't think someone would survive slowing 250km/h -> 0 km/h in such a short time. Am i right?

[–]104372 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, 9.8m/s in a vaccum. So it's waaaaaay less.

[–]trepo 0 points1 point ago

How did you get ~7s of falling. Not even close. More like 3 seconds.

[–]104372 -1 points0 points ago

Counted in my head from the gif since I didn't see a video.

[–]chairmanxiao 0 points1 point ago

But the gif is in slow motion...

[–]104372 0 points1 point ago

Had nothing else to work with, might as well not make any self modifications so if someone finds out it's slowed by 50% then it can easily be changed.

[–]schnitzi 0 points1 point ago

No way it was 7 seconds. Punts in the NFL average around 4.6 seconds. He was up there but not as high as a punt in football.

The best way would be to estimate his height at the top and compute his speed from that.

[–]104372 0 points1 point ago

if it was a 50ft height (15.24m)

It took ~2s for him to fall

10m/s +10m/s = 20m/ 2s = 15m / 1.5s which seems way to quick.

[–]sharksfan93 0 points1 point ago

I remember when I saw this live, I thought he would have snapped his legs off at that height. Dude is lucky

[–]Jay_KWM 0 points1 point ago

I remember watching this live on tv. I never cringed so hard, i thought he was a goner.

[–]SuperHorribleGaming 0 points1 point ago

Oh god, I can't imagine how horrifying that is. it was like falling out of a 5 story building

[–]Caleb_mac11 0 points1 point ago

I remember this X-games so much, I would hate to hit the ground that hard

[–]FalconOne 0 points1 point ago

After about 5 seconds after he's airborn you can tell that he accepts his fate.

[–]leogg_lyl 0 points1 point ago

You would think that his happens quite often, right? They should have an emergency mat or mattress that they can just throw. It's not much, but it's better than landing on hardwood. (Or is it metal?)

[–]cromwest 0 points1 point ago

Gravity is unimpressed.

[–]Brwnman -1 points0 points ago

Dude NSFL that shit. Some people don't like to just happen upon this.

[–]Cynical_Walrus 0 points1 point ago

Right on the tailbone. That would've hurt like hell.

[–]SuperMonk34 0 points1 point ago

[–]Avarra 0 points1 point ago

His shoes exploded!

[–]Neze 0 points1 point ago

Didn't grab no SHOOOOOOES or nuthin' Jesus.

[–]TierOne -1 points0 points ago

I think this man may have eaten the Gomu Gomu no mi because there is no way normal legs should have survived that.. O_o

[–]MustardMcguff 1 point2 points ago

He actually landed exactly how you're supposed to land from a fall that high. Bend your knees, hit with your feet, and roll forward or backwards.

[–]MakeMeNaked -3 points-2 points ago

I've never understood "Trick" sports. I look at these people as one step above dogs or dolphins, do a flip- get a biscuit

[–]CanadianControl 1 point2 points ago

I'm assuming you have a job? If so do a flip- get a biscuit applies to you as well...

[–]iGotChubs4You 0 points1 point ago

If you had even the slightest bit of knowledge about just how difficult the things they do are on top of how incredibly frightening and risky what they all do are, you'd instantly retract such a childish statement.
