Just in case you're interested in more of these videos. This guy had a camera setup pointing at this bridge and would record all of the trucks smashing into it. He also has a youtube channel.

[–]JJTropea 2 points3 points ago

You would think after the 50th crash that they would put some sort of over height warning system in.

[–]trouphaz 10 points11 points ago

From that 11foot8.com website:

Low Clearance can be a real challenge for a truck driver. Especially inexperienced drivers of rental boxtrucks seem to be quite oblivious to the warning signs and flashing "overheight" warning lights at this railroad trestle in Durham, NC. So frequently do trucks crash into the 11-foot-8 clearance trestle, that the railroad company installed a crash beam in front of it. This massive steel I-beam bears the brunt of the impact, protecting the structure that supports this fairly busy railroad track. Believe it or not - they already had to replace the beam once!

[–]skarface6 4 points5 points ago

Or, you know, drivers would have an idea how tall their truck is. In this gif it's a rental truck, so...

[–]trouphaz 2 points3 points ago

sounds like it happens a lot with the rental trucks where people aren't used to the height of their vehicle.

[–]gliscameria -3 points-2 points ago

It also looks like there is some kind of extra support below the normal height of the bridge that is causing the problem.

[–]quigley0 3 points4 points ago

lol, it's probably the "low clearance" sign.

[–]ZBeebs 2 points3 points ago

Visit the web site above, there's all kinds of warning systems. Can't fix stupid.

[–]SexyGreenAndGold 0 points1 point ago

Naw. They like watching them crash. The bridge gives plenty of warning, and there's a turn right there... Personally, if I rent a truck - I like to know its exact height to avoid these issues... or just go around to begin with.

[–]Spaghetti-Bender 13 points14 points ago

I worked for Penske in the rental department for almost 6 years. You'd be surprised how many trucks come back "roofed".

[–]TehCONDOR 1 point2 points ago

Same lol! I had a good little chuckle at this

[–]anotherlandguy 9 points10 points ago

If he was going faster he would have made it...

[–]maborg 6 points7 points ago

Driver call his Boss: "just some scratches"

[–]cm1204 11 points12 points ago

It's a Penske (rental) truck.
*Driver calls the rental office: "I bought the extra insurance, right?"

[–]probrian 4 points5 points ago

From 11foot8

Will insurance cover the damages?

Most truck rental insurance policies specifically exclude overhead damage from coverage..

[–]hardlyharharring 4 points5 points ago

I've actually done that before with a Penske truck....mislabled overpass owned my ass.

[–]Madmartigan1 5 points6 points ago

How did the aftermath go? How did Penske react?

[–]hardlyharharring 7 points8 points ago

I sheared the top off of the truck, we got stuck half way under the overpass. Cops gave me a failure to obey traffic sign ticket which I fought and won because it was labeled incorrectly. We had opted for the insurance at Penske so we didn't pay anything as far as I know because my boss wasn't mad at all and I kept my job :)

[–]Madmartigan1 4 points5 points ago

I moved my fiancee from Michigan down to Arizona where I live in July using a Penske truck, that the thought of doing this terrified me.

[–]hardlyharharring 1 point2 points ago

Yeah it was one of those slow motion "ooooo fuuuuuuck" kind of moments.

[–]Squeeums 1 point2 points ago

If you ever have to do that again, pick up a motor carrier's atlas from a truck stop. It lists all the low-clearance areas in each state.

[–]Madmartigan1 0 points1 point ago

Awesome, thanks. I almost did do it on that trip, I had been driving all day and went to stop at a Holiday Inn and the overhang/carport thing was only 10 feet high. My fiancee stopped me before I barreled right through.

It's just something you never think about in a little sedan like I drive haha.

[–]ForgotMyself 1 point2 points ago

Mislabeled? How far off was it?

[–]hardlyharharring 2 points3 points ago

Well there were two over passes right in succession and the first one was labeled the correct height, the 2nd one had no label so I assumed it was the same as the first. Turns out it was not. It was two inches shorter, just enough to mess us up.

[–]ForgotMyself 0 points1 point ago

Glad everything worked out for you.

[–]skarface6 1 point2 points ago

And yet another reason to be wary around rental trucks on the road.

[–]TheEthan550 2 points3 points ago

"If you hit this sign, you're gonna have a bad time"

I want the view from the other side of the bridge. I wonder how far the drivers fly when they aren't wearing a seat belt. Maybe he could spray paint a truck driver lawn dart bored.... I'm going to hell.

[–]LockjawTheOgre 1 point2 points ago

This particular bridge is in an odd location. It's right next to an intersection on either side, and though it does have clear signage, it's easy to miss in the clutter. What's more, to fix it would require a major reworking of a railway in the middle of downtown Durham. The railbed would need to be raised, which would take half-a-mile of work on either side.

I hate that intersection for many reasons, but this ain't one.

[–]AbSoluTc 0 points1 point ago

My first guess at fixing this that would NOT disrupt the railway at all is to SINK the road below it instead. Lower the road by 4 feet and the problem is solved. Much easier to regrade a road like that instead of upheaving several miles of train track.

Happens everyday at my university

sounds like SOMEBODY isn't getting their deposit back.

I did something similar to this quite a few years ago, although not as bad. My husband and I were moving and had rented a U-Haul truck. During the drive, we decided to stop at one of those old fashioned drive-in burger places. In my extreme state of exhaustion, I forgot I was driving a moving truck. I pulled in under the awning and wound up damaging one of the pieces of corrugated roofing that the awning was made of. It only scratched the truck, though.

Of course I did get the U-Haul insurance, so it was covered. Store owner was pretty upset, though. I apologized profusely, gave the store owner the insurance info, and left. I followed up with U-Haul when I returned the truck. They assured me that it would be taken care of.

A few months later I received a phone call from the restaurant owner demanding I pay him $2000 for the awning. I told him the insurance I purchased through U-Haul should have taken care of it and that I would follow up with them to make sure they did. I called U-Haul and they told me that they closed the claim due to the fact that they were never able to get in touch with the owner.

I let the owner know all of this, but he continued to harass me for the next year or so. All over a $15 piece of corrugated roofing.

My father used to own a sizable moving company. He had one guy that drove the same truck into the same exact bridge 3 times. He fired him the second time. But several months later he was short guys and he was still jobless so he hired him for the week and told him he would get his job back full time if it worked out. Friday afternoon the guy was all excited to get his job back and wanted to rush back to the warehouse. Took the short route, and came back with a shorter truck again....

When I was in elementary school, a girl in my class, her brother and her parents were killed this way. The dad was drunk and didn't pay attention to the low-clearance sign.

[–]Captain_Jackson 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, there seems to be one of those signs that are like "if you hit this you'll hit the bridge" type things and it didn't touch it at all.

then again the truck was going far too fast to even check in the first place

[–]esDragon 0 points1 point ago

Something like this happened outside my apartment building in Chicago three years ago. The sound was incredible as the metal top of the truck peeled back like the lid on a can. They had to send out a couple of dudes with blowtorches to segment it up and cart it off on another truck.

[–]Joshfucious 0 points1 point ago

Was this in Augusta, GA?

[–]disimcity 0 points1 point ago

This kills the truck.

[–]Airwarf 0 points1 point ago

Correct me if i'm wrong here but aren't those signs hanging above supposed to be at the height of the bridge so you strike a sign on a cable instead of a bridge. Lets try adjusting that troll sign shall we.

edit: I would be more nervous as the train operator knowing how many trucks have crashed into the bridge.

[–]alcyholic 0 points1 point ago

This bridge is on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I pass through there all the time

[–]syringa 0 points1 point ago

"Hey, didya get yer truck stuck?" "Nope, just delivering this overpass and ran out of gas... ...Here's your sign."

[–]cromwest 0 points1 point ago

We got this...

[–]Princeps12 1 point2 points ago

Yay for Durham!

[–]mcjoken 0 points1 point ago

I guess he wasn't Penske material.

[–]keirsch 1 point2 points ago

I live in this town. Durham North Carolina represent....

[–]CaptainDouchington -1 points0 points ago

Must have been using the new Apple Maps.

[–]NextDayAir 0 points1 point ago

I can only imagine the sound that made and the subsequent soiling of the drivers pants. I know that when I was driving delivery trucks and you scraped or bumped a low hanging branch in the country it was loud as all fuck. tearing the roof off must have been a seriously pants-shitting sound
