That's a nice boulder.

[–]HadManySons 4 points5 points ago

[–]spdqbr 61 points62 points ago

Hard to believe they had the technology to do this in 1931!

[–]TheDentite 3 points4 points ago

You fuckers. I moved here and insisted that was true after someone said this on reddit.

[–]FrozenBananaStand 10 points11 points ago

This picture is hanging up in the basement hallway of Hale... Also, wtf is the biplane for?

[–]spdqbr 7 points8 points ago

I first saw it hanging up at my climbing gym (Rock'n & Jam'n north). Made me go "wait, what?"

And I think the biplane is to make the time period claim more convincing. Or they could be airlifting scaffolding in :P

[–]GWARgasm 3 points4 points ago

That's Photoshop right? I find it hard to believe that they actually constructed those mountains.

[–]spdqbr 20 points21 points ago

Have you ever been up there? There are climbing bolts all over the place. They put those there to hide the rivets used during constru- nope can't keep a straight face. It's a painting by Jerry McElroy.

[–]GWARgasm -1 points0 points ago

Is that painting from 1931 or he was just painting that it was constructed in 1931?

[–]robbydiesel 7 points8 points ago

Yeah... he's fucking with you. I live in Boulder and the Flatirons are natural made beauty

[–]GWARgasm 1 point2 points ago

Fucking Photoshop sometimes....I feel like an idiot.

[–]Tasche 1 point2 points ago

haha stealing this.

[–]Adan714 0 points1 point ago

fake! that was... you know...

ALIENS

[–]Mr_Snuffleupagus 51 points52 points ago

Why oh why must people spoil otherwise beautiful pictures by toying with the saturation and vibrance so much?

All the whacked out colors on this subreddit make me feel like I'm tripping.

[–]IveGotAntsInMyPants 16 points17 points ago

I'm the same way. Let the earth speak for itself, damnit!

/old hippie who hates your pictures

[–]TheDentite 10 points11 points ago

/but smokes up to enhance saturation and vibrance

[–]GroceryBags 0 points1 point ago

/of course, its all natural

[–]Rather_Dashing 4 points5 points ago

Agreed. I've seen the sky before and I'm pretty sure it's not that colour.

[–]pjaxon 4 points5 points ago

True- but as I rode by the Flatirons this morning @ 7am it was really close to what you see in the img... was an epic morning. I saw a guy with a tripod as I passed by.... am wondering if this is his pic.

[–]zraii 5 points6 points ago

Agreed. That picture isn't that over saturated. Lovely light on the Flatirons in the morning.

[–]sanspanties 0 points1 point ago

Given the high contrast and brightness of the photo, plus the very blue sky and washed out (almost white) areas of the grass, I don't think this photo was taken at sunrise. The flatirons would appear much more pink, and the foreground would be much darker.

[–]pjaxon 0 points1 point ago

I ride by them every day and know what you mean, but yesterday (more specifically ~7:30am), the red tint that lasts only a few minutes had passed

[–]namfux 0 points1 point ago

Should make you feel right at home with this particular one.

[–]PassiveAgressivfist 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, it looks like a painting, not photo

[–]robbydiesel -3 points-2 points ago

Like feeling like you're tripping is a bad thing...

[–]Mr_Snuffleupagus 2 points3 points ago

As if all trips are good...

[–]robbydiesel 0 points1 point ago

It's a pretty picture. I don't think it really screams "bad trip".

[–]Raav 16 points17 points ago

There's a winter version of this in 1920x1080. I have it saved somewhere on my computer. I'll look around for it and post it when I find it.

Here it is, I was a bit off on the resolution: http://i.imgur.com/EmBSI.jpg

[–]seedpoppy 11 points12 points ago

I live near here!

[–]freudian_nipple_slip 0 points1 point ago

Me too!

[–]ImMadeOfRice 1 point2 points ago

I always have taken for granted having grown up less than 5 minutes from where this photo was taken. Every time i go home i grow a new appreciation for its beauty. That is actually one of the main reasons i chose csu over cu.

[–]tonymtnclmbr58 3 points4 points ago

So you chose CSU over CU because it makes you appreciate the beauty of the Flatirons more? I'm a little confused.

[–]ImMadeOfRice 0 points1 point ago

well obviously not entirely. I chose csu over cu because cu is a breeding ground for my high school. literally 60% of the graduates go there. I grew up 5 minutes from the flatirons, i had over 18 years of looking at the same beauty. although beautiful everything looses taste after a certain point in time. i love boulder and love going back, i would just much rather spend my time with down to earth people rather than california bros who's parents send them to a school that cost more than 45 grand a year for an education they can earn at any respective school in the nation

[–]mat101010 14 points15 points ago

Those clouds look super-fake. Here's some OC of the same view: http://i.imgur.com/XGb4N.jpg

[–]GODhimself37 1 point2 points ago

God that background looks so epic. I can't wait to move to CO.

[–]QuickGonzalez 10 points11 points ago

1001?

[–]ZuFFuLuZ 5 points6 points ago

Hipster pixel.

[–]IveGotAntsInMyPants 2 points3 points ago

He was an HDR pixel before it was cool to be over saturated.

[–]ERRYDAYIMSTRUGGLING 0 points1 point ago

Wait wait I had something for this- hixel?

[–]TheDentite 5 points6 points ago

Why anyone would choose to live not here is a mystery to me.

Hi fellow Boulderites.

[–]ERRYDAYIMSTRUGGLING 0 points1 point ago

Hullo!

[–]Frencil 12 points13 points ago

Holy saturation! It's a good shot, but the colors are overdone.

[–]Wellz96 4 points5 points ago

Pretty glad I get to look at these every day. Also, they are great to hike.

[–]rickzor 1 point2 points ago

they are better to climb

[–]SilverLion 2 points3 points ago

I've heard boulder is one of the sickest places to live. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

[–]freudian_nipple_slip 0 points1 point ago

Just moved to Boulder having grown up in Minnesota and just moved from San Francisco. I LOVE it!

[–]Sirbinkai 29 points30 points ago

CU Boulder student here!

[–]godneedsbooze 14 points15 points ago

SHOULDER TO SHOULDER!

[–]chamclouder 26 points27 points ago

[–]godneedsbooze 4 points5 points ago

[–]chamclouder 16 points17 points ago

[–]OneEyeEnos 7 points8 points ago

I SAY THE FIRST TIME WE SCORE AGAINST OREGON WE STORM THE FIELD!!

[–]erchlt 2 points3 points ago

we play in Oregon I think...

[–]sebin -3 points-2 points ago

Nederland sucks... :/

[–]chamclouder 1 point2 points ago

having grown up there in high school, yes, yes it does.

[–]chamclouder 0 points1 point ago

if we score against Oregon

[–]awesomeness1234 16 points17 points ago

This image brings forth hints of patchouli and oppressive laws in the name of tolerance. NOICE!

[–]noshoesnoshirt 11 points12 points ago

Great climbing, generally nice folks, but I got ripped a new asshole for holding the door open for a lady. Twice. (Different ladies).

You know how you can tell somebody's from Boulder? They make it easy. You reach out a hand and say "Hi. My name is noshoesnohirt", and they reply "Hi. I'm from Boulder. My name is insert name here".

Still, they have great weed, good rock, and tasty burritos. Just go to Ft. Collins for microbrews.

edited for tense

[–]KennyLovesYou 4 points5 points ago

I'm glad you left in the "generally nice folks" there, because the rest of it makes it seem like you dislike the place.

I've opened countless doors for people and never got ripped a new asshole. Your experience isn't wholly representative of the city or town. I've run into a couple of jerks in Fort Collins, who proudly start pronouncing they're from "FoCo" in their intro but it doesn't make it a blanket statement. We're all from a great fuckin state. There's no point in making it a divisive issue.

(That was probably a little overboard, but I'm tired of people making generalizations about cities and towns in Colorado)

[–]noshoesnoshirt 4 points5 points ago

No, it's not overboard. I've met a lot of really, really nice people in Boulder, and in fact all of CO, and all of the world I've seen. But there seemed to be a very strong undercurrent of people, who while probably very nice, were very over the top with political correctness, and on the flipside, gave me shit for being from another state.

Look, our world is full of people who will denigrate you for your accent, your clothing your (perceived) beliefs, etc. I just happened to run across this in Boulder. To anyone from Boulder (or anywhere else) who came to Arkansas after the great bouldering deluge of the early '00s, I apologize for the hideous rednecks who commented on your general bearing whilst you tried to buy tortillas and inquired about vegitarian/vegan products. No one is perfect. We all practise our own styles of hospitallity, and we all step on each others' toes.

[–]KennyLovesYou 7 points8 points ago

I lived in Boulder for 5 years, and I definitely saw the self-righteous attitude of a "Boulderite". It definitely pops up more there than anywhere, just tired of the generalizations. People are people, and they're different everywhere, that's what makes traveling fun.

Also, try a the Mountain Sun or the Southern Sun in Boulder, or the Vine Street Pub in Denver. All same people. Great beer, good food. They make everything in house for beer. Always a great place to drink.

[–]noshoesnoshirt 2 points3 points ago

Cheers Kenny, look me up if you're in northwest Arkansas. Nice sandstone here.

[–]KennyLovesYou 1 point2 points ago

Aye aye! Will do, sir!

[–]masgrada 0 points1 point ago

Lucille's as well.

[–]KennyLovesYou 0 points1 point ago

I could eat there everyday. So tasty.

[–]MicrobialBuffalo 0 points1 point ago

Slow clap, well put my friend, well put

[–]v1k1n6 0 points1 point ago

If there is a town in Colorado you can generalize, it's Boulder. Or Pueblo. Fuck Pueblo.

[–]RickBlaine42 7 points8 points ago

Upslope and Avery breweries in Boulder are giving Ft. Collins a run for their money, though.

[–]afdlips 3 points4 points ago

Not to mention, Boulder Beer, Mountain and Southern Sun, Twisted Pine... I'm forgetting some...

[–]drgonzo80 4 points5 points ago

Gotta throw some love to my buddy's place in nearby Nederland - Wild Mountain Brewery. Beers that give the best Boulder breweries a run for their money and pretty great BBQ, to boot.

[–]afdlips 0 points1 point ago

Will be checking this one out really soon. I'll be up in that area a lot shooting a music video soon.

[–]noshoesnoshirt 3 points4 points ago

I've had Avery, but not not Upslope. I'm an equal opportunity drinker: I'll give them all a chance.

[–]Frencil 2 points3 points ago

Don't forget Asher. Small but on the up-and-up.

[–]air_gopher 1 point2 points ago

Mmmmm funbarrel.

[–]awesomeness1234 8 points9 points ago

Denver has all that without the trustafarians. I guess it is a further drive to the mountains though...

[–]noshoesnoshirt 7 points8 points ago

And a bit more industrial. For all its faults Boulder is a very bucolic urban area.

[–]awesomeness1234 1 point2 points ago

you think? It looks like a suburb in So Cal to me. Sure, Denver has its industrial parts, but I am pretty sure it has more park space per capita than boulder and has a feel of a city rather than a series of strip malls.

Sweet word though - bucolic. Had to look it up and intend to use it sometime...

[–]noshoesnoshirt 3 points4 points ago

I guess the last time I drove into Denver I hit the town (from the S.E.) in the wee hours, maybe 5 AM, on my motorcycle. I was probably a bit confuzzelded from the ride, and the flood lights on the refinery as I rolled into town really threw me for a loop.

Cheers Awesome. Use the heck out of bucolic: it's a great word.

Good climbing and microbrews, if you're into that sort of thing. Else, have fun with whatever you do.

[–]masgrada 1 point2 points ago

Denver was smart and kept the highways mostly in the industrial areas. Mostly.

[–]MicrobialBuffalo 0 points1 point ago

No way Denver has more park space than Boulder, 97,000 acres of open space for 100,000 residents. Sure Boulder is full of spoiled people but aren't spoiled people everywhere?

[–]bluemtfreerider 4 points5 points ago

ill take a spoiled hipster over the guys making fun if him any day

[–]awesomeness1234 1 point2 points ago

Its a per capita thing (spoiled people). Boulder takes the cake. Incidentally, it is also one of the richest counties in the nation but also among the least charitable. GO BOULDER!

Parks I am just not sure. I think Denver fibbs a bit - Red Rocks, for example, is in Denver. I think that whole drive to the airport is also in Denver. I have read that Denver has the most parks per capita, but that might not have included smaller towns/cities.

I am also talking out of my ass here based on some article I read 5 years ago. That said, maybe I do belong in Boulder...

[–]an_archery_contest -2 points-1 points ago

take a step back and LITERALLY FUCK YOUR OWN FACE. Avery + Boulder Beer >> Fat Tire + Ft Collins Brewery

[–]noshoesnoshirt 1 point2 points ago

I'm gonna need to work on my Yoga. If I could fuck my own face I wouldn't be here all the time.

[–]SecretGardENT 3 points4 points ago

3 years ago it dumped over 3 feet of snow and my friends and I built a kicker located right in the middle of this picture on that hill. Good times.

[–]godneedsbooze 0 points1 point ago

were you there for the GIANT snowball fight on farrand field?

[–]tsilb 3 points4 points ago

[–]nobodyspecial 1 point2 points ago

Many years ago, I had the misfortune to find myself on top of the Flatiron second from right in the middle of a lightning storm.

Been a mild astraphobe ever since.

[–]Evolve_Fish 1 point2 points ago

I hiked those while i was in CO!

[–]AQiLd 1 point2 points ago

This was the view outside my house for thirteen and a half years. Every time I saw them, I thought about how fake they look: just flat against the sky. Now I live in Canada and I have a similar view, but this time it's tiny. This view is probably what I miss most about living in Colorado.

[–]glamotte14 0 points1 point ago

"It's not just a Boulder, it's a rock!"

[–]P1aybass 0 points1 point ago

Boy I love The Flatirons. So beautiful and a lot of fun to hike too!

[–]ACheckov 1 point2 points ago

I love my backyard

[–]tomdarch 1 point2 points ago

I'm annoyed that I can't find a photo of the full vandalism, but there used to be a 100' tall "CU" painted on the Third Flatiron. Here is an article about when it started.

When you climb the Third, there is basically a full pitch where you are paddling on layers of paint - the "CU" was painted, painted over, re-painted, modified, painted over, re-painted, and so on.

[–]THEcasualberserker 2 points3 points ago

I live in Boulder, and while I can say I love the beauty of the flatirons, these colors are bull shit.

[–]TheDentite 0 points1 point ago

I agree, they are better in real life.

[–]eatmylabia 0 points1 point ago

they're even more beautiful in the winter...

[–]nfatogdtrfb 1 point2 points ago

i had an interesting part of my life where i lived in boulder for a year hen denver for a year then boulder for a month with a buddy before leaving the states. i had to commute by bus because i just sold my car, and i caught the EX to Denver right in front of these beauties every January morning when the snow made every crack and ledge all the more visible.

i would just stare. it was the most mundane thing, living in that town, waiting for a bus, grabbing an Onion to read, looking up and seeing this, but i would travel the world several times over to see these covered in snow again.

otherwise...there's a shitload of pollution between yourself and the flatirons, which kind of sucks if you're farther away than Chataqua (park at the base)...

[–]glittershark 0 points1 point ago

Been hoping for a shot of my hometown for a while now

[–]rjstef 1 point2 points ago

Been there, hiked that. bt,ht

[–]Sleep45 0 points1 point ago

I want to ride a dirt bike through that.

[–]shit_eating_grin 1 point2 points ago

[–]Hellvis 0 points1 point ago

This is shit. The sky has been added. When are you photoshop retards going to learn to do this in a realistic manner?

[–]TitsofErica 0 points1 point ago

Chautauqua Park??

[–]JeremyKylesLovechild 0 points1 point ago

Is Mork's egg vessel in this picture?

[–]TheNewScrooge 0 points1 point ago

Too cool. About 6 months ago someone posted a pic of this exact same shot, except in winter. Such an awesome coincidence

[–]washed_up_hippie 0 points1 point ago

I was just looking at pictures of the Flatirons yesterday! Dreaming of my move to Colorado......

[–]pocketchange2247 1 point2 points ago

I'm going there next week!

[–]tonymtnclmbr58 0 points1 point ago

I go to school there, and it's just great. I love Boulder. :)

[–]Flalaski 0 points1 point ago

Come on down to boulder, East Texas. you n' all yo friends

[–]domotaguinod 0 points1 point ago

interesting fact: the rock climbing team carved "CU" in that mountain side after winning their most recent BCS championship. They were later expelled and the "CU" was removed to the best it could be. You can still see small remains on the very right mountain

[–]thelostwoods 0 points1 point ago

Hey look, it's where Michael Scott lives now.

[–]davie18 0 points1 point ago

I can't believe I've just seen this #1 on r/earthporn.

I have literally just now submitted a post to /r/boulder about going and living there next year to study as part of my uni course, and I think this picture is certainly helping me make up my mind!

[–]esquaz 0 points1 point ago
