you have to seperate the comments from the votes. The reddit commentors are NOT the ones that vote. The voters see a funny thing, they vote, it's up at the top for a while, and it dies.

The top comment could be "THIS GUY RAPES BABIES" with full proof and videos and pdf files full of testimony. Even a court ruling about the baby raping, it wouldn't matter. Without an extreme situation, the people that vote are NOT the people that read the comments.

Reddit emphasizes current attention values, shown as karma. That's what people do their things for. Attention. Karma is attention. Without checks, it's a site for quick-fix attention whores to get their fix.

Complaints are comments, and the front page is often littered with entries whose comments start with "You're not telling the story right". It's marketing. What jumps out at Joe Average. It also plays into a sense of being able to deny any involvement or care for what happens to reddit. That cool, aloof mentality that lets people escape their responsibility.
