I get depressed when I see people that do stuff like this to themselves.

I get impulsive and obsessive at times, like most everyone, but I grow out of things and my tastes change...and something that I was into a couple of years ago becomes completely ridiculous when I look back on it. I cant imagine mutilating yourself and then waking up one morning and realizing that you are not into it anymore but cant go back..it would be a living hell. Face and neck tats, make me feel this way..I try not to judge people on stuff like this but it can be hard not to form an opinion.

I'm not bitter, and I think you missed my point. It is easy to judge people for making decisions like this that might affect their lives, meanwhile you have someone that is respected and trusted who may be spreading STDs, society is coaching him on to continuously harm himself in the name of sports, etc.

The reasons vary from person to person. Believe what you want but mods in many forms have existed in cultures all across the globe for as long as people have been around. Our culture (western culture) just decides to pin it to rebellious youth which in some cases is true and others not. I have mods, and i sure didnt get them to communicate to everyone around me. I have mods you cant see when im in public...how is it a form of self expression? Theres cultures in the world who attribute the practice of modding to finding ones inner self or treat it as a spiritual practice.

Maybe your friend here is trying to play noble martyr while judging people but many of us arent. I have mods because they hold meaning to me and i have others because i see art in them. Does every person get their hair cut a certain way solely to appeal to others or do you suppose maybe, just maybe, some people have an appearance they like to see when they look in the mirror. Not everyone is attention seeking.

I agree with what you said, I just want to clarify again, it was simply an example. I am not saying that people who do this don't deserve attention.....If they don't expect extra attention, they are naive at least.

I am simply saying that not everyone who has body mods is weird, creepy, evil, etc....and not everyone who is "Normal" is good.

I should have used several examples as it seemed to get out of hand really quickly. I have nothing against people who dress nice or fit the social norm. I am friends and family with many of them. A lot of them are great people....others, not so much...just like people with body mods. Just like people in general.

I have friends who play college football. I have friends who work for ESPN and I have friends who are circus freaks. I think you missed my point completely again....It is an example of a fictional but acceptable character in society, not people or a group of people I disklike.

I'm not playing the martyr...again, I confirm these people, including myself, make this choice actively knowing what it entails and the results of it. I am simply pointing out that it is ironic to me that people are so judgmental of someone based off of one part of their life. I'm not prejudice, and I try not to be full of shit whenever possible. What I am saying is that all people, for any reason, can be taboo or dangerous or stupid.....just because he decides to wear it literally on the outside doesn't make him stupid or disgusting.

There are plenty of good looking, white, republican, men in public office and stocks and bonds who have plenty of skeletons in their closet.

I am not saying, don't judge this man based off of his appearance, because no matter what, I have yet to find anyone who doesn't make a snap judgement based on experience or association. I am saying that the idea he is "Totally weird and will have a hard time finding a job" are like saying the sky is blue. We know...he knows.....get over it.

That's how I personally feel. I didn't mean and I do not mean to discriminate against anyone for any reason, I am just saying that to say you can't "understand" this guy is fair. To think he is stupid, remorseful, or ignorant are really stereotypical and foolish statements and/or ideals.
