I like the attendant at the bottom

Right this way

[–]ixAp0c 21 points22 points ago

This should be the text on the bottom. Not what it currently says.

[–]randomguy65 7 points8 points ago

I expected my comment to be downvoted to hell and back. You scare me Reddit.

[–]smellsmoist 2 points3 points ago

I'm glad it wasn't, it deserved better.

[–]BitterNAlone 0 points1 point ago

Oh! Funniest comment ever! Laughing my ass off! Thanks

[–]redemit 105 points106 points ago

I don't think those are slaves so much as workers at the hoover dam or a mine. Man, slaves just can't catch a break.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

It's quite racist of OP to automatically assume that every picture of a black person doing work means they're being forced to do it.

[–]I_am_not_novel 6 points7 points ago

Yes, because in the 1800's they had a choice.

[–]_cyan 2 points3 points ago

Since the picture isn't in America, they could have.

[–]I_am_not_novel 3 points4 points ago

It's a possibility, but I highly doubt it. Even in Africa the hard labor like that is usually some sort of slave labor.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic. I have no idea when the US slaves were freed due to not being American.

[–]lYossarian 3 points4 points ago

Not being from the U.S. isn't a very good excuse for not knowing the approximate time of hugely important historical events like the U.S. Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation.

Though the U.S. wasn't involved I know Germany Invaded Poland in '38 or that the Irish War for Independence and Civil War were in 1920ish.

[–]petzl20 9 points10 points ago

Germany invaded Poland in '39.

[–]lYossarian 2 points3 points ago

dammit!

[–]Koffing 0 points1 point ago

The world doesn't revolve around america, no matter how much americans want it to.

I bet you cant even name and date 3 major english historical events that dont involve america without wikipeida.

[–]lYossarian 0 points1 point ago

Battle of Hasting - 1088

The Falklands - Early 80's?

The end of Victoria and the beginning of Edward - 1900

How's that?

edit: immediately think I misremembered Hasting. Let's call it 1066.

[–]redemit 2 points3 points ago

Hastings was indeed 1066. 1088 is your ATM PIN.

[–]Koffing 1 point2 points ago

Fair enough, you apparently can.

[–]lYossarian 6 points7 points ago

I love history. So many things happened in it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, actually, not being American is a perfectly good reason for not knowing. The US Civil war wasn't hugely important to most of the world, nor was the freeing of the slaves (note; we already had that).

You don't know most other nation's historical events, and America in terms of the world's history is only marginally significant, and primarily only in the last one to two hundred years. Compared to the nation I'm from, or most of Europe, that's tiny.

Even more, did you know that a lot of nations don't teach dates in history, knowing that teaching dates is useless?

So yes, don't expect people who aren't American to give a shit about dates from your country. Who the fuck learns dates anyway?

[–]Gustav55 1 point2 points ago

some were freed during the civil war (the ones in areas that were actively rebelling against the union) all the slaves were freed with the passing of the 13th amendment in December 1865.

Also note that there was thousands of free blacks all over the country at this time as well one of the most well known is Fredrick Douglas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Douglass

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for providing an intelligent answer rather than being a sarcastic dick like one of the sibling posts.

[–]vkhex 0 points1 point ago

It's important to note that this did NOT end the exploitation of black people in america. After the end of slavery, most slaves ended up as tenant farmers on the same plantations they were 'freed' from. And forced labor contracts were used to perpetuate the idea of slavery. It wasnt really until the 20s and 30s did things begin to improve, but the violence and hatred of blacks remained. Look up Greenwood, Oklahoma of a good example. Greenwood is town in Oklahoma that was called the 'Black Wall Street.' It was incredibly wealthy. After an racial escalation, it was burned, shot up, black folk hanged and dragged behind cars. Even airplane bombings were reported. In the 1950s and 60s, the civil rights movement hit. This is when rights were really beginning to be granted. With the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it made it criminal to discriminate based on race. Sadly, race based discrimination is very much STILL a part of western culture, and in America, black males have an unemployment rate massively higher than the average at 25%, vs 9% average.

[–]manlord -4 points-3 points ago

Don't forget Martin Luther King and George Washington Carver.

[–]compstomp66 23 points24 points ago

It's definitely the hoover dam. This is a very famous picture.

[–]1_point_21_gigawatts 18 points19 points ago

No, it's a mine in South Africa. The Kimberley Mine, I think, and it's from the late 1800s. The Hoover Dam was constructed in the '30s.

My own Google-Fu is off this morning, so I can't find the source, but I can assure you this is not a photo of Hoover Dam workers.

[–]4_word_replies_only 2 points3 points ago

You sir are correct.

[–]Pappy1193 7 points8 points ago

Looks like a picture from a South African diamond mine i saw awhile back. I'll look for it

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah looks like that was west of Kentucky, so more then likely not slaves

[–]_Particle_Man_ 13 points14 points ago

there werent any slaves in the 30's, officially

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

That would be another way to tell

[–]Lettuce_Get_Weird 29 points30 points ago

[–]randomguy65 1 point2 points ago

Scumbag RCT 1 peep. I call dibs on this meme.

[–]PopularHat 15 points16 points ago

You know what the worst thing about being a slave is? They make you work all day but they don't pay you or let you go.

[–]ObligatoryResponse 4 points5 points ago

Isn't that the only thing about being a slave?

[–]LookLikeJesus 0 points1 point ago

Also, they steal your children and do the same thing to them. Actually that might be the worst part.

[–]cosmotheassman 2 points3 points ago

Don't forget the rape and the beatings!

[–]Gseventeen 84 points85 points ago

Spooks and Ladders.

These are not slaves. Don't feel bad though, its a common misconception that when black people work, they're obviously slaves.

[–]kleinattie 4 points5 points ago

It would've sucked if you had to fall off

[–]junkieradio 21 points22 points ago

Why would anyone have to fall off?

[–]dronethrone 4 points5 points ago

Just watch what you say to the bosses and you'll never have to worry about that.

Much disappointment when my ancestors learned it wasn't a real underground railroad :(... Woulda been sweeeet.

[–]bluntman84 0 points1 point ago

[–]PublicUrinator[!] 0 points1 point ago

See, those white guys didn't mind taking the back seat.

[–]yourik445 1 point2 points ago

people need to relax. if those were slaves there is no way the white man would put them in any danger. their clearly safe on that thing.

[–]very_old_guy 0 points1 point ago

On the other hand, if they're indentured servants then they're fucked.

But then it's a moot point, because they're all dead now regardless.

[–]healthbledger -2 points-1 points ago

Wesa gonna die?!?

[–]Connor598 -2 points-1 points ago

If you notice there are two white guys in the back, so it can't be a slave torture method or death trap

[–]theytooktomallen -4 points-3 points ago

I still can't laugh about slavery.

[–]Mcflexington 2 points3 points ago

I guess it's because you're just a better person than the rest of us.

[–]theytooktomallen 0 points1 point ago

Or because slavery was that bad. I wasn't criticizing others. You can call me that for not being able to laugh at slavery if you want.

[–]crazymuffin147 0 points1 point ago

Reparations or the slave coaster. Your choice people!
