I remember one of my college professors walking into class with a big grin and he announced that he had just made his final student loan payment. I thought to myself (at the time), "shit, that guy is pretty old". Last month, I finally paid my own off, looked into the mirror, saw all the gray and thought the same damn thing. Still worth it.

[–]shepry_44 97 points98 points ago

This is sad... I don't want to get old. Is it bad?

[–]askylitcity 87 points88 points ago

Will it hurt?

[–]mattXIX 56 points57 points ago

Easier than falling asleep.

[–]JakiiB 19 points20 points ago

Well now I'm sad.

[–]mattXIX 50 points51 points ago

Hopefully this helps.

[–]LoveOfProfit 19 points20 points ago

I can confirm, this helped.

[–]TheBlumpking 7 points8 points ago

So does this.

[–]ButtonSmashing -1 points0 points ago

Dafuq is that? I watched it for too long.

[–]mattXIX 2 points3 points ago

It is red dye and blue dye colliding underwater. I got the .gif from /r/whoahdude

Warning: You're likely to spend a lot of time there.

[–]SilentHorizon 1 point2 points ago

[–]bobbybusche 6 points7 points ago

Only if you have student loans.

[–]sailingonward -1 points0 points ago

It hurts, right in the feels.

[–]hayashirice911 11 points12 points ago

Just dye your hair black silly. Then you never get old.

[–]pandahavoc 19 points20 points ago

I have too many loans to pay off, I can't afford my own black.

[–]SingleGirl_illa 6 points7 points ago

Yet alone silly dye...

[–]option_i 3 points4 points ago

Dye silly alone black.

Still true today. Some things never change.

Although my wife has been making subtle hints about Grecian Formula. Subtle as in buying it and leaving it on the counter. Open. With a note.

[–]I_Think_Alot 1 point2 points ago

Or dress up in gold clothing so you can go out as Pokemon Gold and Silver

[–]WisconsnNymphomaniac 6 points7 points ago

Just work out a lot. You can easily be in better shape at 50 than at 20.

[–]hinduguru 5 points6 points ago

So scared of getting older

I'm only good at being young

[–]LoveOfProfit 7 points8 points ago

Nothing to worry about. You're actually really good at getting older. You've been doing it all your life.

[–]hinduguru -1 points0 points ago

You're [+2] on my account so I think I can believe you. Around what age are you?

[–]LoveOfProfit 1 point2 points ago

I'm always the oldest I've ever been (presently, 24).

[–]Leahbear 0 points1 point ago

So I play the numbers game to find a way to say that life has just begun

[–]hinduguru 0 points1 point ago

That song just puts me in this mood..

[–]FreshRight 2 points3 points ago

Egg? I dreamed I was old.

[–]melance 1 point2 points ago

It is better than the alternative.

[–]WIDE_OPEN_BEAVERS 0 points1 point ago

I don't know, do you enjoy getting erections?

[–]beercrafter 13 points14 points ago

Serious question, how old are you? This is depressing the hell out of me.

[–]slipperyfist 12 points13 points ago

If it makes you feel better, I'm on track to pay off my loans by the time I'm 26. Started paying off my $25k loan when I was 23. So not everyone will he burdened by loans into older age. It depends on the size of the loan and how aggresively you can pay it off.

[–]IANALOGOUS 29 points30 points ago

$25k? I still have $70k left at 29.

[–]6h057 20 points21 points ago

Holy fuck.

[–]squot 10 points11 points ago

$110 at 28! Don't feel bad! (I'm on track to have it paid off by the time I'm 33/34!)

[–]IANALOGOUS 1 point2 points ago

How much a month is that?

[–]WeaselJester 1 point2 points ago

$10k left at 35 and feeling pretty good about it. Almost done, next year, next year...

[–]Paranoidexboyfriend 1 point2 points ago

I'm 27. 295k left.

[–]I_RAPED_HITLER_AMA 2 points3 points ago

kil yourself

[–]beercrafter 7 points8 points ago

I'm kind of in the same boat as you, I just find it sickening that our generation has this burden when a generation ago college was free. There is no concept of public goods, only private investments. We're regressing as a society.

[–]JH_92 1 point2 points ago

What? Both of my boomer parents had and paid back student loans, as did their brothers and sisters. Yes, it was cheaper, but it's never been "free."

[–]beercrafter 20 points21 points ago

In 1968, Governor Ronald Reagan dealt a heavy blow by creating tuition in what was supposed to be the “free” UC system, and calling it a “student fee.

Not all state schools were free, some had some nominal fee of $30 per semester or something, for which you were provided housing, meals, classes. Previous generations took out student loans to cover extras like books, living expenses, etc. Now people have to take out a mortgage-worth of debt to get a degree they can't even find a job with. That's progress.

[–]the_jefe 6 points7 points ago

I have friends who pay about $50k a year for school. I also have friends who pay $2k in tuition a year at state schools.

[–]jaymarc5 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I paid mine off last year and I'm 26.

[–]Raneados 1 point2 points ago

Ooh gave me hope. I'm 27 and I've got about 10k left. If I can find a decent job, I can knock that out before I'm 30 (I live a cheap life)

[–]_Square_ -1 points0 points ago

This. A little advice from someone a bit older than most redditors. When you are young, un-married or newly married (as long as you don't have kids), there is no better time to buckle down and pay off your student loans. You will never have more time on your hands and energy to work extra hours or take a second job just to kill that stupid loan. In my experience my friends who still had loans once they had children, are going to be paying minimums for the next 15 years. Source: My wife and I both took extra jobs and paid off her 20k+ in loans in less than one year. Try not to raise your lifestyle that much after college as your income increases. You want good cash flow, not tons of shiny shit (at least for awhile).

[–]obeluss 0 points1 point ago

My plan was to get as much money a possible, and hope some of it would be forgiven/given as bursaries. Been out of school for 4 months, can already pay half of my 25K back, and hope to be all paid up before 2014.

[–]Zelarius 3 points4 points ago

The last person I talked to about student loans took 13 years to pay them off.

[–]stevenw003 3 points4 points ago

24, and I'm on pace to be paid off by the end of the year.

[–]hohohomer 0 points1 point ago

If I don't make any extra payments, it'll take me a total of 10 years to pay off. I don't really care though. Since I started college, and ended college my salary has gone up more than I owe for school. But, I worked full time during school.

[–]BlueFamily 0 points1 point ago

Mine are on track to be paid off when I'm 45.

[–]tashinorbo 0 points1 point ago

its not always awful. I'm 26, i'll have my loans paid off in 14 months @1100/month (goodbye frivolous expenses)

[–]trirsquared 7 points8 points ago

Exactly, it's worth it.

The average student loan debt in the US is approx $26,000. The average auto loan is $30,000. So we have no issue taking out a loan on a object that depreciates immediately and is almost worthless in 8-9 years, yet recent grads bitch and complain about taking out a loan to fund an investment that ends up earning them (on average) 40% more in salary.

EDIT: I know it's hard to pay that check every month (I've been there) but it's an investment. Not a fine.

[–]OrlandoDoom[S] 1 point2 points ago

You're 100% correct. I took those loans out (not very much actually, 34k in total) with the understanding that I had to pay them back. I managed my finances carefully in college and worked full time nearly all of it to offset the costs.

The economy being what it is, paying all my living expenses AND student loans is problematic. Compared to some of my peers, my debt is miniscule, yet I am still paying $430 a month. I also spent my last year and a half of school doing unpaid internships (4 in total, 2 of which were especially prestigious in my industry) in the hopes that the income hit would be worth it once I graduated.

I for one value the skills and knowledge I gained during my time in college, but it's nothing I couldn't have learned going into my industry right out of high school. Unfortunately, it's a barrier to entry that is growing increasingly irrelevant, and a burden that less and less people are willing to take on.

[–]TripperDay 0 points1 point ago

The average auto loan is $30,000.

Does that count dump trucks and tractor trailers, or are people seriously spending that kind of money on cars?

[–]TJweh 67 points68 points ago

Man that kid seriously doesn't want 50% more cash.

[–]nhuff90 10 points11 points ago

Screw you, Jimmy Fallon!

[–]mattmc318 5 points6 points ago

But it's more money!

[–]its2012 -1 points0 points ago

For some reason, I always get Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel mixed up.

Also, Jimmy Kimmel looks exactly like Seth MacFarlane.

[–]hiding_from_my_gf 2 points3 points ago

its my money, and I want it now.

[–]dusktreader 108 points109 points ago

You have to watch that gif repeat 120 times to get an accurate grip of the misery...

[–]Ikarus3426 23 points24 points ago

I'm paying off student loans as well, and I thought the gif was funny. But your comment has done some damage to me today.

[–]dusktreader 7 points8 points ago

I'm so sorry. I thought it was funny too, until I started thinking about how many times I have done and still have to throw a wad of money out the window. I also got sad

[–]bee_keeper 1 point2 points ago

Not to mention, you still have to eat a hat when GabeN does an AMA.

[–]DrDebG 4 points5 points ago

The day I paid off my last student loan? That day, I became a woman grownup person with expendable income.

[–]ur_killing_me_smalls 8 points9 points ago

How it feels on your 2nd, 3rd and subsequent payments.

[–]valicool 10 points11 points ago

Spoiler alert! You are the orange cat.

[–]ButterMyBiscuit 3 points4 points ago

You become the dog every month after you make your last payment.

[–]lonewanderer812 0 points1 point ago

Ive hit the 2 year mark on my loan payments and its depressing how little I've made a dent in my overall bill. 35% of my paycheck goes to student loan payments and at this pace I will have everything paid off once I turn 40. On a good note my truck will be paid off in a year in a half so I'm excited for that.

[–]killthebadger 16 points17 points ago

I loved that clip of the "little rascals."

[–]embryonicjourney 8 points9 points ago

It was actually called "Our Gang" back then. There are even silent episodes.

[–]bag-o-tricks 2 points3 points ago

A very young Spanky.

[–]willworkforicecream 2 points3 points ago

Wasn't that the one where the one kid was bug hunting and hit the secret button to open the secret safe with his hammer?

[–]Downhillrunner 8 points9 points ago

I second that. The irony is that after 10 years of paying for student loans, I finally earn enough money that it wasn't a big deal to not be making the payment every month. Money well spent.

[–]ItchyPickle 25 points26 points ago

That's how I felt when I had a kid.

[–]RNRSaturday 5 points6 points ago

I thought the exact same thing... How I feel about my paycheck now that I have a kid.

[–]i_got_this 37 points38 points ago

I'm young, single, employed and I have no debt. Someone needs to brag when they got it.

[–]Lord_Vectron 4 points5 points ago

I am all of these things but I've gotta admit, I'd rather be the guy in a good career making $80000/year and paying $55000/year for a couple years than myself making $25000/year with no hopes of a career or raise in sight.

[–]DirtyWhoreMouth 5 points6 points ago

I guess I've been lucky. My husband and I just had our daughter 4 weeks ago. She's our first baby. Everything we have for her was either hand-me-down or bought at a yardsale for super cheap. I've only spent about $100 on her in diapers and wipes - and yes, she's gone through a ton. I coupon like a mad woman. Nothing in her nursery matches. None of her little clothes match very well but she has plenty of them. I breastfeed her.

I guess they get expensive later?

[–]dsanfte 3 points4 points ago

I think it's all the little toys you're guilted into buying, and daycare eventually, but really, second hand is good enough for anyone.

[–]UtilityPole 5 points6 points ago

Daycare costs $1500/mo. per child here in Ontario.

$1500. A month.

(cries)

[–]sailingonward 3 points4 points ago

It's like buying an apartment downtown (where I live)... for your toddler

[–]sailingonward 3 points4 points ago

And if she is a stay-at-home mom... there's that lost salary

[–]DirtyWhoreMouth 4 points5 points ago

It's good enough for us but we do know of some people who think they need everything new. Some things you do need new, such as a newborn car seat, but everything else, as long as it's clean, who cares? Lol

[–]dsanfte 5 points6 points ago

Yea pretty much. My mom had me at 17 and raised me herself, alone, for several years. You can guess how much 'new' stuff I had :p Somehow I still ended up a university grad working a white collar job.

[–]DirtyWhoreMouth 4 points5 points ago

Good on your mom and on you. I'm happy for you.

[–]blueeski 3 points4 points ago

You say pretty nice things for someone named DirtyWhoreMouth

[–]HotMayo 17 points18 points ago

I come to reddit to forget this shit, but every other picture reminds me of common stresses. :(

[–]dan_v_ploeg 17 points18 points ago

Its even worse when you go to an expensive school and dropout.

[–]judgemebymyusername 28 points29 points ago

Well, you made two separate mistakes.

  • expensive school
  • dropout

[–]commonplatypus 4 points5 points ago

Situations like this are why community college exists.

I cannot even begin to fathom how much this costs. I'm going to a Junior College and paying out of pocket right now and just one of my classes costs almost $800. Granted it's a 5 credit math course (Remedial math, sigh...), but still.

Is the educational difference really that great that people will pay through the nose for it? From what I've seen and heard, barring a few specialty degrees/career paths, most educations are by and large the same. Why pay for four years at an expensive out of state school when you can get a similar education combining community college and a cheaper higher learning institute in-state?

[–]Vsx 0 points1 point ago

Is the educational difference really that great that people will pay through the nose for it?

I am an autodidact. I went to college so I could get a degree because the jobs I wanted required a degree. I had semesters where I actually attended less than 5 sessions of class total while taking 16 credit hours. I graduated with a 3.5GPA and I have a good job. I learned almost nothing at college that I didn't read out of a book.

I wouldn't have been able to get the job I have now if I'd gone to a less expensive college. It's silly but that's the way it is. Basically you just have to do the best you can to achieve your own goals in life.

[–]ConansBeard 0 points1 point ago

Sorry but your misfortune gave me a good chuckle. $800 dollars for math you should have learned in high school.

Also reminds me, last class my Computational methods in statistics teacher showed how to do a derivative on the board and every one just laughed. (Class requires extensive use of complex linear algebra im one of two undergrads its mostly grad students)

You are making the right decision with a junior college but try to transfer and finish up at a named state university

[–]DirtyWhoreMouth 6 points7 points ago

yep. in that boat too. nothing to show for it but you still have to pay it.

[–]the_girl 0 points1 point ago

A friend of mine took out loans in the neighborhood of $40k on the first year of law school, then flunked out. Now he has to pay back all that money, on classes he can't even get credit for at another school. That's gotta hurt.

[–]wandahickey 9 points10 points ago

Spanky!

[–]Howard_Beale 4 points5 points ago

Aaaaannnndd howwwww.

[–]burried_digger 8 points9 points ago

How I feel trying to pay my student loans off early: http://imgur.com/6J0pY

[–]mctwists 5 points6 points ago

Indeed... But in the long run it will be so incredibly worth it. I graduated in May 2010 and have almost paid off my $80k debt; I'll be done by December of this year!!

[–]slvrbullet87 2 points3 points ago

I paid off all my loans earlier this year after only being out of school for 2 and half years. It was the greatest feeling of all time.

Thank god for scholarships, two years of community college and a full time job all through school.

[–]shuddleston919 1 point2 points ago

You'll feel like this... but only temporarily.

As compared to folks who have these loans weighing upon them for years...

[–]wise_man_wise_guy 6 points7 points ago

I paid off my loan this week. 7 years, double the min payment with a bit of a balloon this year and I am 32 years old. Worth every penny.

[–]phoenix0r 1 point2 points ago

That'll be me in about 4 years... Sigh.

[–]wcstcomic 9 points10 points ago

The depressing realization I had recently was that if I were to suddenly get $10,000 out of the blue ... I wouldn't even feel the difference.

[–]souldust 2 points3 points ago

What did you get your degree in OP? What is your debt total? What percentage of your income is the payment? When will it be paid off?

[–]themitch22 3 points4 points ago

http://i.imgur.com/SCBWK.jpg this is how I feel when I know it's all going to interest and not to the principle.

[–]bunbun22 3 points4 points ago

Pay extra?

[–]Temptress75519 6 points7 points ago

How'd you get a gif of mitt Romney as a toddler?

[–]ENKC 4 points5 points ago

You think Mitt would throw money away?

[–]I_am_not_angry 3 points4 points ago

10 years later.... same feeling.

[–]ruthi 2 points3 points ago

[–]Arktri 2 points3 points ago

Jesus you Americans have a hard time. In the UK (Wales at least) we pay back 9% of anything over £15,000 a year with no interest. Plus we only pay around £3.4k a year for pretty much any course. Although of course the better universities are super competitive to get into.

[–]ac3raven 3 points4 points ago

My goal in life is to pay off all of my loans with a single check.

[–]Namika 10 points11 points ago

That's kinda silly, you should pay them off as fast as possible with many small checks to cut out the interest that compounds.

Student loans are like 7% a year on and takes most people like 20 years to pay them off. Makes a hell of a lot more sense to pay as much as you can every year. I suppose you could wait until 20 years and pay it all at once, but then you would pay like 40% more than you needed to : /

[–]ButterMyBiscuit 6 points7 points ago

Way more than 40%, actually.

Let's assume a loan of $40,000 which seems to be reasonable these days.

If you take out a 20 year loan with monthly payments and a 7% yearly interest rate, you would make monthly payments of $310.12 for 20 years, totaling $74,428.80 after all is said and done.

HOWEVER, if you were to wait and pay it all back in one lump after 20 years, your payment would be $40,000*1.0720 which is $154,787.38, which is 208% greater.

The magic of compound interest!

[–]its2012 3 points4 points ago

Exactly. Imagine how great and important you will feel writing a check for over $150k.

[–]Oed0 3 points4 points ago

Remember kids, if you're going to uni make sure you do a course that leads to a job. Else it's just cheaper and quicker to get cunt tattoo'd on your forehead.

[–]TheMau 2 points3 points ago

I fully realize that college in the US is very expensive. I myself just paid off my student loans after graduating 11 years ago. However, nothing chaps my ass more than hearing people bitch about not want to repay their loans, or not being able to, because their degree is "useless." In nearly ever case it's someone who got mediocre grades in a psychology/sociology/humanities degree - or better yet, dropped out. Then there are those who got these nearly useless degrees at a ludicrously expensive out of state private school because it's the best in their useless field. Do a little research before you choose a major. Get a degree in a field that is hiring. There is a wealth of information available now on the internet to help you make an informed decision. If your passion is psychology/sociology/humanities than by all means pursue it, but know that you will have to work your ass off to get good grades and you will almost always need a Masters or PhD in those fields to get a decent job. Even then, most of those decent jobs will not pay you a great deal. If you make a well informed decision about your education you will not be sorry. If you do it wrong, you will be sorry.

[–]noisyturtle 0 points1 point ago

What happens to my student loan debt if I move to another country and found work there? Would I get out of paying $160k?

[–]shuddleston919 9 points10 points ago

What got you into $160K of student debt? I am honestly curious... what degree do you have?

[–]noisyturtle 7 points8 points ago

40k a year for 4 years. Out of state privately owned college.

[–]shuddleston919 13 points14 points ago

Okay. That does add up. I'm just curious... I mean... normally we don't hear people saying things like "I just bought a car- now how do I get out of paying the car loan?" or "I just bought a boat, should I leave the country to avoid having to pay for it?"

It just seems like a strange thing to say.

[–]dhamon 6 points7 points ago

You can repossess a car or a boat, but not an education. Not to mention, the costs of a good education are spiraling out of control beyond market forces due to the easy availability of loans.

[–]gjs278 8 points9 points ago

why would you even do that?

did they not have math at your high school?

[–]judgemebymyusername 4 points5 points ago

Out of state privately owned college.

Jesus. Sorry to criticize but why would anyone do that to themselves?

[–]Zelarius 6 points7 points ago

No you wouldn't. Why would you think that?

[–]DarkSideMoon 11 points12 points ago

What, are they going to send in the seals to get him?

[–]shstmo 45 points46 points ago

[–]DarkSideMoon 11 points12 points ago

That was.... Unexpectedly relevant.

[–]bunbun22 3 points4 points ago

Because his US credit score wont have much effect anywhere else so why should he bother caring. Nevermind he fact that it's an incredibly shitty thing to do, that's not important, all that matters is he got to spend way more on a college degree than was really necessary and then bail.

[–]U-235 7 points8 points ago

If his/her parents have their name on those loans as well, then his parents will be completely fucked over.

[–]dirice87 2 points3 points ago

Well, that depends on if you can get a job in another country, who are all in as bad or worse shape as the U.S. right now, and are generally really really strict with their visas. Most first world countries extend visas mostly to highly skilled workers or those who already have a job lined up.

That and any family you have back home will be harassed by creditors for the rest of their lives. You won't go to jail if you come back however, although I don't know if they would let you back in, but I'm somewhat sure you can visit time to time no big deal.

Its a pretty drastic step, but I had friends who have done it. Granted we're only in our early 20's so I don't know the long term effects it has, but I personally would not consider it.

[–]CoyoteStark 2 points3 points ago

Oh man. I did this exercise in my university class today about financing your future.

It was like calculating how much it costs to attend class per hour each semester including: tuition, textbooks, lost-wages, food, everything else...

The results came out to like a few hundred dollars per hour of instruction. Skipping class hurts so much more now.

Canadian universities suck.

[–]dirice87 2 points3 points ago

try U.S. universities...I went to a state school and grabbed every scholarship available and max'd out my grants. Still graduated with 14k in loans. Not really a burden compared to others, but that was a best case scenario.

I have friends coming out of school with 200k+ of student loans. I really don't know how they thought that was going to shake out.

[–]bunbun22 4 points5 points ago

Hey, look on the bright side. You still got that one dollar that landed on the windowsill!

[–]kajunkennyg 0 points1 point ago

First little rascal gif I've seen ever, kudos chap

[–]lovely_red_snow 0 points1 point ago

When I was in college I was broke b/c I was in college, now i'm broke b/c i'm paying for it. :(

[–]witchbutter 1 point2 points ago

You load sixteen tons, and what do you get, another day older and deeper In debt...

[–]shpaticus 0 points1 point ago

This is depressing.

[–]springloadedgiraffe 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad mine are split into 5 different auto-payments a month so I don't see that huge number dropped into it on my statement so easy. They tend to blend in with other random purchases.

[–]7times7is49 0 points1 point ago

I just can't believe there is a GIF of Spanky from Kentucky Kernals.

[–]PresidentBarackOsama 0 points1 point ago

Hello, I'm Mitt Romney.

I am just here to say that you should borrow money from your parents.

Vote for me!

Thanks!

Oh, I approve this message.

[–]BloodFeces 0 points1 point ago

Not legit. That girl was left with one dollar.

[–]peekingduck 0 points1 point ago

Has anyone found any of these old "our gang" episodes online?

[–]Airmeith 0 points1 point ago

That's how I feel when I pay my student loan payment every month...

[–]mlinville84 0 points1 point ago

I sympathize with you. It is a loan though so think of it like a really expensive car payment!

[–]rquiner12 0 points1 point ago

I do that every month, and will probably be doing so for the rest of my life. Yay College!

[–]yohomatey 0 points1 point ago

Just wait until you buy a house! Goodbye money!

[–]jesseetzler 0 points1 point ago

I know that feel bro

[–]JJX119 0 points1 point ago

I love Our Gang and I love you for using this gif.

[–]uniquecannon 0 points1 point ago

I applaud you for taking responsibility for your decision to make the effort to pay your debt. Please continue to work hard and it will pay off for you in time.

[–]fuck_you_scum -1 points0 points ago

What's a student loan?

[–]SupperTime 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I see you just got your first pay cheque (or unemployment)

Now it's gone.

[–]MoreBeansAndRice 0 points1 point ago

You shouldn't have made it rain.

[–]OcifferWiggles 0 points1 point ago

Just... just TAKE it!

[–]sickraw 0 points1 point ago

SPANKY!! I love this episode!! The Little Rascals were such a staple in my childhood.

[–]dumbgaytheist -1 points0 points ago

Upvote for the real Spanky!

Man, I love the real Little Rascals.

You can see a few here: http://heustess.com/episodes.htm

[–]perrygeo 0 points1 point ago

Fuck. Just wait until you have a mortgage payment ...which is STILL less than your student loan payments! I could have TWO houses if it weren't for this stupid education.

[–]NoManSon 1 point2 points ago

Keep the change you filthy animal!

[–]mattmc318 0 points1 point ago

I like how the one, single bill happens to land gracefully on the windowsill.

[–]tstew39064 0 points1 point ago

Defenestration

[–]GizmoJ0nes 1 point2 points ago

Coming from a graduate who is currently unemployed, I can relate.

[–]Engineerthegreat 0 points1 point ago

Buy an alcoholic beverage that gets better with age and drink it when the last one is paid

[–]Bumrape 0 points1 point ago

My monthly payment barely even covers the interest. I'll never pay it off at this rate, fucking sucks.

[–]nathism 0 points1 point ago

That's how I felt with my last one.

[–]spillfish 0 points1 point ago

I could have bought a boat.

[–]Atario 0 points1 point ago

If it makes you feel any better, student loans are one of the cheapest (interest rate) kinds of loan there is.

[–]themcs 0 points1 point ago

That's exactly what I felt like when I paid out of pocket for my tuition. Glad it was now instead of 10 years later though

[–]DublinItUp 1 point2 points ago

This story is wayyy too relevant to just not say anything.

Three years ago, my friend and I were smoking in a coffee shop in Amsterdam near the Leidseplein called Crush. It was a weekday at about 11am, and we were the only people in there, sitting at the very back of the coffee shop, next to a little balcony area. We had just smoked a reasonable amount, and thus, we were really stoned, when suddenly out of the blue about 2000 euros in 50's started falling from the sky outside the window, and we nearly shit out pants. We immediately ran outside and started grabbing a bunch, without even thinking about it, apparently there was a big stack of money sitting on a desk near a window, and a baby had literally just grabbed it and thrown the entire bunch out the window. All of it was returned to the mother and we didn't take any but Jesus fucking Christ, there's literally nothing more invigorating when you've smoked a lot than seeing it rain 50 euro notes.

[–]lucas_9 0 points1 point ago

Right now for Welsh student loan holders the first payment you make automatically takes £1500 of your total amount (just paying anything over £5). Best fiver I've ever spent.

[–]r0x0x 0 points1 point ago

This is best episode of little rascals inb4 old, im 22

[–]kimsubong 0 points1 point ago

You'll feel differently making your last one! It is a good feeling!

[–]lastmanonreddit 0 points1 point ago

I feel bad now for complaining about paying €8 parking for college each week when the course fee is like €2,000 for 4 years. carry on. Americans be crazy, your college fee's make no logical sense to be that expensive!

[–]TooTallTim 1 point2 points ago

I left uni 6 years ago and haven't paid a single bit of the money back yet. Over here you don't start paying back anything until you earn over a certain amount of salary, and since leaving uni I've only ever worked for my own company where on paper I earn practically nothing. And for everyone who mentions "Oh, but you're still getting charged interest", I'm going for the '25 years and we write off your debt' challenge.

[–]TheMau 0 points1 point ago

So, you voluntarily took out a loan to get a education and now you don't want to pay it back? The world is so unfair!

[–]altometer 0 points1 point ago

I payed off my loan in one lump. This is exactly how I felt.

[–]redawn 1 point2 points ago

since most of that is interest you need to set fire to 90% of it first and then throw it out the window.

we didn't start the fire. no we didn't light it but we're trying to fight it...

[–]steve_b 0 points1 point ago

Wait until you start paying life insurance premiums.

[–]DudeGuy123 0 points1 point ago

Not sure why you feel like you are "throwing money out the window" unless you did not benefit from your student loans as far as an education or job. I pay my student loans every month, almost have a grand, and I don't mind paying it. It helped me get the job I have now and education I have now.

So, you are throwing money out the window if you did not utilize your student loan correctly, similar to what another poster said about going to an expensive school and then dropping out.

[–]phorkor 0 points1 point ago

Wait till you make your last. 1000x worse, especially when you haven't used your degree in over 10 years, yet you paid for most of the time. Took me 7 years to pay off a 2 year associates that I got in '00. Haven't used it since '02.

[–]DivinityInsanity 0 points1 point ago

Hey everyone, I have €25,000 debt! (EU notation). I still have two years to go, but apparently they decided I can't loan anymore! Which means I had to loan a lot of money from my parents to pay my tuition for this month (4 more payments to go and I don't have rich parents, btw). I am so fucked! :D

Paying off my debts? Goddamn, I'd be happy to start, because that would imply I have a job and don't have to worry about how I'm going to get money to survive. :D

[–]bilateralchicken 0 points1 point ago

I can't even afford mine right now. Yay joblessness.

[–]ChickinSammich 0 points1 point ago

I still have about $3,000 left before I'm completely paid off and I feel like this every month.

[–]kingstrafeiv 0 points1 point ago

Is that Spanky from the little rascals?

[–]impakt316 1 point2 points ago

I actually just checked my loan balances today. I'm at $179,000, yay! I'm 27 and hope to pay the loans off by 32/33. I've paid $45,000 over the last 22 months.

[–]dse78759 0 points1 point ago

Spanky from the Little Rascals.

[–]mcknixy 0 points1 point ago

[–]Kirstkid 0 points1 point ago
