Where did he have the ladder set up? It looks like it was a terrible idea from the start.

[–]icuhalloffame 270 points271 points ago

[–]TheColorOfTheFire 186 points187 points ago

And, here's the statics analysis. Conclusion: He's very safe.

For those without Imgur:

Assumptions:

  • Static coefficient of Friction (μ)=0.5

  • Weight of worker=200 lbs

Force on bottom of ladder leg:

sin50°=200/a

a = 261.081 lbs

Force on wall:

tan50°=200/x

x = 167.82 lbs

Check:

261.081² = 68,163

200² + 167.82² = 68,164

Close enough.

Maximum static frictional force:

167.82 lbs*0.5 = 83.91 lbs

Conclusion:

Not only is he more stable than a free-standing ladder, but there's up to 84 lbs of lateral force preventing the ladder from being knocked to the side.

Additionally, to knock the ladder upward and dislodge it, more than 261 lbs of upwards force would have to be applied long enough to move the ladder past the edge of the floor.

EDIT He can also lean out over 3', much more than he would without the ladder leaning against the wall.

Statics

How far over can the worker lean?

Assumptions:

  • Elevation of worker above upper floor=8 ft

  • Weight of worker=200 lbs

  • Maximum static frictional force = 83.91 lbs (Calculated previously)

(Weight of worker)/(Lateral frictional force)=(Vertical distance)/(Horizontal distance)

(200 lbs)/(83.91 lbs)=(8 ft)/x

x = 3.36 ft

Therefore, if the worker's center of gravity is 8' above the floor, he will be able to lean out well over 3' from the edge of the ladder. (This neglects torsional forces from leaning out, which is reasonable, as the railing is keeping the ladder from twisting.)

YES MATH! Have all of my upvotes!

[–]partyplatypus 7 points8 points ago

Just an amazing gif.

[–]SiliconGhosted 0 points1 point ago

I LOVE when I get to use it!

[–]Zoloir 0 points1 point ago

Dude. Fricken intense gif.

[–]xXSalXx 0 points1 point ago

That was fucking awesome!

[–]SqueakyBelle -3 points-2 points ago

Except it's not maths.

Physics.

[–]julielc 3 points4 points ago

Physics is mostly math. Applied math for awesome stuff, but it uses a ton of math.

[–]shintoo 0 points1 point ago

Math, not even once.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 2 points3 points ago

Math for the win.

[–]Eurynom0s 12 points13 points ago

That's physics, not math.

[–]Evictus 2 points3 points ago

To be really picky it's statics engineering.

[–]Eurynom0s 0 points1 point ago

You do exactly those kinds of diagrams in intro physics.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 11 points12 points ago

Without math to quantify physics, how do you have physics?

[–]Eurynom0s 11 points12 points ago

To quote Sylvester James Gates, Jr, math is not physics, math is a language used to describe physics.

[–]hairyassandballs 5 points6 points ago

yup.

it's like the following convo:

bro: "That book I just read is incredible."

brotato: "That's 'words' for you."

bro: "you're a fucking idiot."

[–]TheWhiteShadow42 1 point2 points ago

This was the first thing that I thought of when I saw your comment.

[–]tengen 2 points3 points ago

Physics is applied mathematics.

Relevant: http://xkcd.com/435/

[–]Osnarf 0 points1 point ago

That's awesome, I completely agree. However, couldn't you say philosophy would be further to the right of math? My reasoning is that philosophy is basically the study of logic, and rigorous math is a progression of proofs building up from a few assumptions, so that any mathematical statement is just a logical statement. Long story short, philosophy is the study of logic and math is applied logic (logic applied to numbers). At the very least math is a sub field of philosophy.

As a side note, how is it that they have a comic relevant to everything?

[–]iPodLurker -1 points0 points ago

Words. I know some.

[–]thelastcurrybender -1 points0 points ago

this reminds me of those slow mo moments in sherlock where he explains everything he is about to do, everything his opponent is about to do, and the effect of his actions.

[–]poi88 198 points199 points ago

you know you have been on reddit too much when you know the picture being posted in beforehand.

[–]nothingisworking 62 points63 points ago

I got a little smirk on my face waiting for it to open.

[–]TesticleToe 33 points34 points ago

Waiting for it to load? Are you using a radish? Upgrade to a fucking potato already.

[–]nothingisworking 14 points15 points ago

No unfortunately I've been using a carrot since it came out in '98.

[–]NickTheHalfling 7 points8 points ago

I use my grandparent's old iRock.

[–]Uberschwanz 17 points18 points ago

[–]ecksplosion 14 points15 points ago

IT'S ONLY UNSAFE IF HE'S ON THE TOP TWO RUNGS. JEEEEZ

[–]GOLTRON 33 points34 points ago

That ladder is actually very stable.

[–]Poncyhair 20 points21 points ago

unless it rolls.

[–]Journalisto 18 points19 points ago

Or hops. I've had ladders hop or slip a little - usually when I was doing something stupid or when I was spaced out for a moment.

I've seen this debate on that ladder position before and I think it's a crazy setup. I wouldn't do it.

[–]---korn--- 12 points13 points ago

That ladder is actually very stupid. Everybody thinks their setup is just fine, until that split second in the air when you realize it wasn't.

[–]GOLTRON 5 points6 points ago

I said it was stable. Not safe.

[–]EverGreenPLO 2 points3 points ago

Who gives a shit if it is? Why not use roller w extension?

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

Or the fence gives. Always consult the armchair engineers before doing something that might kill you.

[–]WarAndRuin 23 points24 points ago

Dude...you need to mark this NSFW

[–]Darkstargir 11 points12 points ago

I think I see what you did there.

[–]andytuba -1 points0 points ago

you should come see /r/crazystairs. that whole place is nsfw.

[–]tooawkwardforlife 2 points3 points ago

Can't believe I fell for that.

[–]ThomasTheDestroyer[S] 36 points37 points ago

It was a terrible idea, but the ladder they have will only reach the roof if its base is on the ground at the top of that wall to the left. So he was climbing over this lowered walkway when the ladder broke.

[–]madagent 66 points67 points ago

Ladder was not meant to do what he wanted it to do. First rule of using any tool. Use it for its intended purpose or you will break your back in 8 places. Lesson learned the hard way.

[–]Cormophyte 14 points15 points ago

Yeah, every time I see something like setting up a ladder over the gap of a second-story walkway by leaning the top edge against a wall and wedging the feet into the walkway ledge...I just think "you're getting the job done, and that's commendable, but someday you're going to regret this."

[–]MoreWhiskeyPls 10 points11 points ago

As a guy who's done 'stupid' things a million times: You have a customer and boss who want the job done. You do things that are risky, because 99.9% of the time it works, saves everyone money and you get the job done.

[–]Antilominical 11 points12 points ago

So it hasn't worked for you a thousand times?

[–]MoreWhiskeyPls 7 points8 points ago

When it feels like a million times, you'll understand.

[–]dysmetric 4 points5 points ago

During a terrifying car-ride with a one-eyed, glaucoma suffering, driver repeatedly having animated cell-phone conversations without hands-free. He responded to my complaint that "We're going to fucking die!" with

"I've been driving like this forever and I'm still alive. If it were that dangerous I'd be dead already.".

[–]MoreWhiskeyPls 1 point2 points ago

....But he has a point. (I am/ have known too many adrenaline junkies.)

[–]ImNotRon 3 points4 points ago

I don't know why you are being downvoted, I have to do stupid shit to get a job done on time as well. I had to scale a 2 story building without a ladder because the a/c was about to explode. Got it fixed in time and got paid well, I would do it again if I had to.

[–]MoreWhiskeyPls 0 points1 point ago

Sometimes a job has to get done, regardless. Legit posts always have a 3 or 4:1 ratio. It's the internet. It's full of monkeys fucking footballs.

[–]varukasalt 0 points1 point ago

I have to stand in water with an electric grinder almost every day. Sometimes, I even have to do dangerous things.

[–]basec0m 4 points5 points ago

I can second that... don't ever use a grinder to open a beer can.

[–]Jetboy01 6 points7 points ago

Yeah that's just crazy. You're supposed to open the beer can before you use the grinder.

[–]Dakota47 3 points4 points ago

How about a beer with a chainsaw?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PkHsAULzwQ&sns=em

[–]HereHoldMyBeer 0 points1 point ago

I was just waiting for shards of glass to explode all up in his face.
Sigh, not today my friend, not today.

[–]exaei -1 points0 points ago

I once used an angle grinder to open a can of baked beans.

I was really hungry.

[–]Aaaaahthud -1 points0 points ago

You should stay out of those places.

[–]falconae -1 points0 points ago

Can we hope that it is your bosses terrible idea that was in writing? And your friend has just earned a painful golden ticket?

[–]msmorize 44 points45 points ago

Looks painful as hell. Poor guy.

[–]crzystve42 14 points15 points ago

Makes me think of all the times I fucked up in Mirror's Edge.

shudder

[–]1541drive 7 points8 points ago

Mr. Glass has spent a long time looking for him.

[–]polkaroo2 1 point2 points ago

Worst part is I know that feeling after he lands and leans back against the wall, Your still functioning not in a lot of pain but you know your fucked up and going to hurt.

[–]Hyperdrunk -1 points0 points ago

I fractured a vertebrae in high school. Just 1. I played the rest of the football season with it, killing the pain every day with illegally purchased vicodin before finally admitting my back was killing me after the season was over.

[–]Moara7 36 points37 points ago

This is pretty late in the game, and I don't know if anyone will read this comment, but if this happens to you, or someone you know, DO NOT WALK AROUND. Your coworker is incredibly lucky that he didn't jostle his broken vertebrae in such a way as to paralyze himself.

After a fall, you won't feel any broken bones at first, especially ones in your back. Stay very still, the way you are, and DON'T MOVE. Call an ambulance.

[–]Bipolarruledout 21 points22 points ago

In the US we call this "ambulance roulette". If it's not bad enough to call the ambulance then you're stuck with a giant bill.... on the other hand death.

[–]partyplatypus 18 points19 points ago

We, we do?

[–]pissoutofmyass 2 points3 points ago

Sorry - people who aren't rich do.

[–]witty_account_name 1 point2 points ago

Ah, yes. My mistake, my good sir. It seems that I have neglected to stay up to date on the vocabulary of the common man. It is a point of embarrassment, but there are only so many hours in the day and something had to be neglected when my training in the art of sword play picked up in ernest. I thank you for providing clarification.

[–]TipsTheJust 4 points5 points ago

Yes, we do.

[–]bxblox 2 points3 points ago

Maybe you wont say those words, but if you're in the US you will definitely wonder if your "potential injury" is worth the cost of the visit. This time you might decide it is but just as often you or someone else will decide to wait it out, walk it off, give it some time...

[–]fermented-fetus 2 points3 points ago

No. I most definitely will not wonder that.

[–]nahog99 1 point2 points ago

If you are paying for that ambulance ride yourself and dont have a SHITLOAD of money, believe me, you will think twice about using an ambulance.

[–]fermented-fetus 2 points3 points ago

That's why I buy a thing called insurance.

[–]HomieHavko 1 point2 points ago

I can't afford that :(

[–]aksid 1 point2 points ago

good luck paying 1000$ + a month when you have a job that only pays 2500 a month and you are paying rent, food ,car insurance, gas, car payment, phone bill, etc etc.

[–]aksid 1 point2 points ago

I think this every time i hurt my self.... "fuck am i going to lose everything i saved over this"

[–]CitizenPremier 3 points4 points ago

And death is cheap!

[–]Silverton13 3 points4 points ago

DON'T MOVE! but call an ambulance first tho.

[–]absentmindedjwc 6 points7 points ago

A dad's friend fell off of a scissor lift at probably the same height OP's friend fell and shattered his hip... The doctors told him that he probably would have bled out if he would have tried getting up (due to the bone slicing a ton of veins and arteries while shifting). Moral of the story: if you have a bad fall like this, don't fucking move

[–]Redditsays 0 points1 point ago

Don't move but call an ambulance? How are you suppose to do that?

[–]yyx9 8 points9 points ago

Serious question; will he be compensated for being injured on the job?

[–]deighv 8 points9 points ago

In the US, most of the time. Employers are required to purchase insurance to cover exactly this sort of thing. Unfortunately it's also likely that the employer will try to fuck the employee out of benefits, as the premium increase after an accident is pretty huge.

As mentioned below, it can also mean instant termination. Another way to displace the cost to the employer.

[–]Bipolarruledout 1 point2 points ago

Oh and the termination could be for "abusing company property".... meaning the ladder.

[–]deighv 0 points1 point ago

"You owe us for that ladder that broke your face!" Also the damage to the awning and concrete.

Yeah, wouldn't put it past some employers...

[–]yyx9 5 points6 points ago

Or drug test you. Not saying your friend does that I'm just saying sometimes they drug test you right on the spot. Smoked weed 3 weeks ago? You're still high and now have to pay $90,000 medical bill yourself. J/K it's 150,000, good luck!

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

This. However they could still find the employer at partial fault.

[–]halfbreed69 1 point2 points ago

Several years back I was in a fire on a forklift at work. First and second degree burns, Had to drive myself to the clinic ten miles away (there was an ER two miles away!). Then had to take a drug test before I was given treatment.

[–]yyx9 1 point2 points ago

Wow. Just wow. I can't believe this is legal. I'm thinking if you came in unresponsive they would stabilize you first. I love America!

[–]bxblox 0 points1 point ago

This is pretty standard work work comp stuff here. Yeah it is a bit crazy...

[–]aksid 0 points1 point ago

say fuck you and call 9-11 employer will have to pay for ambulance and you will go to the best hospital nearest you. it's the law bitch!

[–]Drainbownick 3 points4 points ago

In the US you're fired before you hit the ground

[–]deighv 2 points3 points ago

True story, happened to me. They did pay for my hospital visits though.

[–]HurricaneHugo 0 points1 point ago

If he was using it in a safe manner then yes.

[–]DivinityInsanity 24 points25 points ago

20 feet = 6 meters

[–]Ohdang 4 points5 points ago

I always learned that 5 meters were the "you're probably going to die height." Amirite?

[–]guns_of_navarone 10 points11 points ago

I would think that's more of a "you're definitely going to break some bones" height. But if you land the right (wrong?) way, I'm sure it could kill you.

[–]Limitedcomments 0 points1 point ago

Yeah even a 1 meter fall at the wrong angle can kill you. Land with your head parallel to the ground and your body weight + the force (even with such a small amount) of the fall pushing the other way can snap your neck. A childhood friend of mine broke his neck and couldn't walk for a year because of a bad fall off of a few stacked bricks that shifted and he lost balance. Depending on how you land and what damage you do, the smallest thing can cause death even if the chances of it are extremely low.

[–]aksid 0 points1 point ago

actually the magic formula is anything over double your height. It's almost impossible to break your neck from anything less.

[–]SteamCrunk -2 points-1 points ago

[–]Limitedcomments -1 points0 points ago

Whoops, thanks buddy. I always seem to mess that one up -.-

[–]In_The_Wrong 0 points1 point ago

I was working construction when I was 18 I fell off the very top of a 20' ladder onto concrete. I landed on my feet and rolled. My boss, who was a dick, asked if I was ok. I said yes and he said then get up the ladder and grab the other end of this conduit. I was fine but scared shitless to climb to the top of that ladder again.

[–]Bipolarruledout 1 point2 points ago

I think I just broke both my knees reading that.

[–]Daitenchi -1 points0 points ago

It doesn't take as much as you think to be fatal. A fall from 5 meters onto concrete is likely to be fatal.

[–]Bipolarruledout -1 points0 points ago

"You're probably gonna have a bad day" height...... but at least it will be a short day. Or perhaps the (preferred) "You're probably gonna have morphine" height.

[–]The_Painted_Man 1 point2 points ago

20 feet = disabled centipede.

[–]RedWave -1 points0 points ago

ohh I was thinking it was more than that, 20 something is a lot of somethings.

[–]0510521 19 points20 points ago

Did he go to the hospital?

[–]ThomasTheDestroyer[S] 62 points63 points ago

Yes, after initially insisting that he was fine, he realized that he didn't recognize the girl that he had just spent the day training for work. It was at that point that he realized he probably had the concussion. He had no idea about the breaks.

[–]madzaman 36 points37 points ago

Adrenalin is an amazing awesome thing!!!!

[–]Pippkorn 14 points15 points ago

SCIENCE!!

[–]The_Painted_Man 13 points14 points ago

BIOCHEMISTRY!

[–]Laboratory -3 points-2 points ago

Well, medicine really.

Edit: I mean MEDICINE!

[–]The_Painted_Man 1 point2 points ago

medicine = natural adrenalin?

I think perhaps the natural adrenalin predates medicine.

[–]Laboratory -1 points0 points ago

The field of medicine concerns the effects of a compound on an individual, be it a natural compound or synthetic. This would be medicine, not biochem.

[–]The_Painted_Man -1 points0 points ago

"The adrenalin rush in this case is caused by a medicinal reaction in the body."

No, doesn't have the same ring to it.

[–]partyplatypus 0 points1 point ago

No, adrenaline is made naturally in the body. So it is indeed BIOCHEMISTRY!

[–]knightofmars 8 points9 points ago

BATH SALTS!

[–]lerbius 6 points7 points ago

I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT

[–]lutzj 9 points10 points ago

well at least that means his skull and brain tissue must've absorbed all the damage

[–]leet_hacksaw 7 points8 points ago

This guy was training someone?!

[–]GunningOnTheKingside 1 point2 points ago

Don't do what Donny Don't does.

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

The thing that scares me the most about brain trama, mental illness, etc. is that before the fact you always think that you'll know if something is wrong with you. That turns out to almost never be the case.

[–]---korn--- 1 point2 points ago

I hope he was not training her to use a ladder.

[–]Kyle197 -1 points0 points ago

No. He just rubbed some dirt in it and walked it off.

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

RomneyCare!

[–]ParaVerbum 15 points16 points ago

Fixed the framerate. Now it should play back at its (roughly) proper speed.

[–]lerbius 10 points11 points ago

Didn't help, still looks painful!

[–]googlezurusername 10 points11 points ago

Didn't exactly stick the landing...but I give it an 8.6

[–]StartSelect 30 points31 points ago

Its a trigger fish.

[–]RedHelling 19 points20 points ago

[–]cultmember 3 points4 points ago

How does that even happen

[–]NoNeedForAName 2 points3 points ago

Probably multiple tabs.

[–]puts_ranch_on_pizza 5 points6 points ago

Are you sure you posted this in the right place?

[–]PBI325 2 points3 points ago

SO close haha

[–]Aarthar 2 points3 points ago

I also opened both the trigger fish and this post at the same time. You sir get my upvote.

[–]analweapon 1 point2 points ago

Hi, how high are you?

[–]cowtow 4 points5 points ago

No, it's "hi, how are you?".

[–]cpnHindsight -1 points0 points ago

Like this, see?

[–]Fintonius 2 points3 points ago

SHITSHITSHIT....can't look like I'm not doing any work....gotta...go....wax the floors....

[–]madzaman 0 points1 point ago

Wax on..........

[–]brothermuffin 1 point2 points ago

Sweet jesus that's lucky. I saw a guy fall onto tiled floor less than 16 feet and he died in the hospital. :c

[–]richj43 2 points3 points ago

it doesn't matter so much about the ladder postioning, or that his judgement was off.. i wish him a speedy recovery and to get well soon! thats whats important.

[–]GrandmaTITMilk 0 points1 point ago

ummm ouch

[–]pwnerofnoob 0 points1 point ago

fuck back pain, i can't imagine the stiffness he will have forever!

[–]charko14 0 points1 point ago

I couldn't find it, but this post calls for the picture if the Mexican painter on the ladder over the stairs

[–]IhateToronto 0 points1 point ago

Fucking asshole ladder.

[–]okfornothing 0 points1 point ago

He's lucky he's not dead!

[–]NadaThrowaway[!] 0 points1 point ago

sheeeeeet. Having just broken my arm this past weekend from a fall, I (can kinda pretend to) know his pain

[–]fractal7 0 points1 point ago

Looks to me like he used very poor judgment when it came to ladder safety. He has probably done this for years as I have and it finally caught up with him. I hope that after he heals, he refuses to put a ladder in places like this again. Losing a job because your boss tells you to ignore ladder safety is better then being a quad the rest of your life.

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

If he did this for years an no one ever said anything then the employer is most certainly liable.

[–]crowan2011 0 points1 point ago

I too have fallen in a very similar situation, except instead of back first it was right arm first. Either way, 20ft falls onto concrete are a bitch, best of luck to your friend

[–]scubsurf 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, concussions make you do weird shit sometimes. I fell 30 feet out of a tree (some branches softened the fall for me on the way down or I'd probably be dead) and I whacked the back of my head on a tree root.

I got up after a minute or so and began to wander around the yard looking for something, and trying to get water out of the sprinklers, which were off at the time.

[–]kmkziboy 0 points1 point ago

is anyone else freaked out that its a jpg and it's moving?

[–]TILFromReddit 3 points4 points ago

Was this during work? He should sue for compensation for putting him in a dangerous situation. Those injured vertebrae are going to affect him for the rest of his life.

[–]leet_hacksaw 4 points5 points ago

People should be responsible for their own safety. Not sure how it is there, but it's illegal here to force someone to perform an unsafe task.

[–]pumpkindog 0 points1 point ago

He got up and walked inside a couple of minutes after this.

he probably shouldn't have

[–]Allwrongforyou 1 point2 points ago

Interesting tidbit: the L.D. 50 for falling is a mere 15 ft. For those not familiar, the lethal dose 50, is the "dose" amount for which the administration of will kill half, while half will survive. Your friend beat the odds. Typically, however the LD 50 refers to administration of chemicals and drugs.

[–]Bipolarruledout 6 points7 points ago

Yeah but I know someone who fell just 10 marijuanas and died.

[–]twunk -1 points0 points ago

Ouch. I cringed.

[–]yyx9 -1 points0 points ago

ugh, right on his fucking back. I hope your friend is OK.

[–]Safety_Always_Off -1 points0 points ago

your friend is not wise

[–]brimley -1 points0 points ago

YOU FUCKED UP! YOU FUCKED UP! YOU FUCKED UP!

[–]CoyoteStark -1 points0 points ago

That's some Final Destination shit right there.

[–]georgeo 0 points1 point ago

One tough motherfucker.

[–]jrlp -1 points0 points ago

post the video!

[–]plexxonic -1 points0 points ago

Adrenaline fuck yeah!

[–]Bipolarruledout -1 points0 points ago

"Meh.... with no health insurance I figured that was better than dying".

[–]onionsman 0 points1 point ago

Vertigo is a bitch. I'm a skydiver, no problem jumping out of a plane at 14,000 ft, put me on a cliff without protection ( harness/dynamic rope ) I get the spins. Most of my nightmares involve situations like this guy.

[–]ScoopMYpoOp -1 points0 points ago

Adrenaline is a hell of a drug

[–]dazwah -1 points0 points ago

What tard posted this in /r/pics? This is not a picture.

[–]CountryBoy06260 -1 points0 points ago

Like a man, man.

[–]WinterIsCold -1 points0 points ago

he probably made his injuries worse by moving after he fell

[–]TwoBlueUnicorns -1 points0 points ago

I want to see the lucky bastard get up and walk!

[–]gosso920 -1 points0 points ago

I feel bad for the ladder.

This is all I could think about while watching that gif

I'm also glad he's relatively okay.

It looks like he shattered all of the fucks he gave

He's very lucky to be alive. Most people wouldn't survive a fall from 20 feet on to concrete.

When I was about eight years old and dumb as a rock, I managed to fall from the first floor of a church that was under construction to a basement slab . About the same distance. I landed flat, lucky me, and got up and walked home. About two blocks. "Mom, I don't feel so good." They rushed me to the hospital (red lights and sirens halfway across L.A. That was COOL.) and found that all I had was a ruptured kidney. Ten days in the hospital and I was on my way.

My friend got a concussion during football and I had to help him out. He sang Call Me Maybe for a while, but then moved on to talking about several of his cats, he does not own a single cat and has no clue what he was saying.

Why does the timestamp go directly from :28 to :30?

[–]loafers_glory 0 points1 point ago

I absolutely love how when the gif loops around, he just straight-up disappears.

Adrenaline. It's hell of a drug.
