Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Of all of the times I've seen this on the internet, this is one of those times.

[–]hobaggg 30 points31 points ago

I saw a girl dressed like this in real life. I win.

[–]sohautrightnow 10 points11 points ago

I've seen two. What does that make me?

[–]hobaggg 25 points26 points ago

Better. :-(

[–]plausible-rationale 4 points5 points ago

Cross-eyed.

[–]DRUNK_CYCLIST 4 points5 points ago

chicago photographer here. i took a photo of two women dressed like this at pride this year. i'll have to dig it up...

edit: found it!

[–]soyabstemio 0 points1 point ago

I've seen spots in front of my eyes many times.

[–]carouselunicorn 4 points5 points ago

I am a girl who dressed like this in real life. edit: fuckered grammar

[–]hobaggg 1 point2 points ago

"was a girl"? When did you have the operation?

[–]carouselunicorn 0 points1 point ago

Let me check. Nope! All good down there, I'm just terribly tired.

[–]hobaggg 4 points5 points ago

I literally typed out 4 perverted replies, but I think I'll just take the high road and act like a gentleman.

[–]carouselunicorn 3 points4 points ago

High five, gentleman! I'll use my other hand so you're not grossed out.

[–]Jubei_08 -1 points0 points ago

Yea, we are just gonna take your word on that, huh?

[–]jonathanrdt 1 point2 points ago

But that...that's a man...right?

I looked some more. My brain is convinced that's a man.

[–]svendle2 0 points1 point ago

My girlfriend did this last year. Do I get anything for that?

[–]hobaggg 0 points1 point ago

No, because apparently this costume is extremely prevalent.

I've seen this comment twice today

[–]maxifer 2 points3 points ago

Of all the times I've read this comment, this is the second time today.

[–]classicsteve -1 points0 points ago

I saw this before it was cool to see this.

[–]Sputnik_One 1 point2 points ago

Had to check the URL to make sure I wasn't on Pinterest.

[–]zero_sum 0 points1 point ago

Out of all of my friends, you are one of them!

[–]deadasdisco -1 points0 points ago

im noticing this a lot lately. have i really been on reddit so long that the stuff i saw year ago is totally new again? place is starting to look like 9gag.

[–]binomialnomenclature 29 points30 points ago

I think it's originally from MAC cosmetic's 2009 Halloween campaign. http://vimeo.com/24846362

[–]skinned_knuckle 12 points13 points ago

Wow! That video was 3 minutes of jump cuts and seizure inducing flashes to finally show the finished products for less than 5 seconds each.

[–]effervet 0 points1 point ago

I had an art major roommate who did this back in 2008 and then threw a fit when she saw it blow up in 2009. She'd paint folks and backgrounds to look like famous paintings, and then photograph them. I got painted as Henri Matisse's The Green Line, a friend of hers was painted as a Roy Lichtenstein piece, and her boyfriend was painted as one of Van Gogh's self portraits.

It was a cool idea, and I don't blame her for being upset when it became popular a year later. I doubt she was the first to come up with the idea, though.

[–]thirdfounder 80 points81 points ago

upvote for Roy Lichtenstein.

[–]madbeetzyo 13 points14 points ago

Beat me to it. I just saw his exhibit at the Chicago Museum of Art recently.

[–]oh_my_mavis 8 points9 points ago

I believe it is called the Art Institute of Chicago.

[–]madbeetzyo 0 points1 point ago

I just moved to Chicago 2 weeks ago. Give me a break - I'll get there eventually. :p

[–]Briffny 10 points11 points ago

Me too! Unfortunately they started giving us a two minute warning at the museum. So I was almost running in between the last rooms. Maybe there is some irony in having to digest pop art in a two minute time frame?

[–]mrpopenfresh 2 points3 points ago

Yeah I saw it this summer and it was great!

[–]fuzzywuzzywuzzabear 0 points1 point ago

I feel like everyone in Chicago knows his name now because of the exhibit this summer. The ads were everywhere.

[–]AbasementPark -4 points-3 points ago

Me as well. I saw it this summer and It was so meta.

[–]kingwi11 -2 points-1 points ago

What do you mean by meta?

[–]pig_is_pigs 0 points1 point ago

Is it actually Lichtenstein-inspired? All the sources for this image that I recall just labelled it as comic book inspired.

[–]a_biz 4 points5 points ago

http://illusion.scene360.com/painting/5617/the-real-life-lichtenstein-comic-girl/

This is where i first saw this a couple of years ago.

[–]ddaze 1 point2 points ago

It's from a series of Halloween makeup looks Mac Cosmetics did in 2009: http://vimeo.com/24846362

[–]WendyLRogers3 -1 points0 points ago

While I like this, I think if you got a group of multicolored Warhol Monroe impersonators, I think it would be downright scary.

[–]Ezl 1 point2 points ago

Lichtenstein

[–]WendyLRogers3 0 points1 point ago

I like Lichtenstein's art as well, but he tended to use characters that are less recognizable as characters, outside of the comic book milieu. That is, Betty and Veronica are the same, only with different hair color.

However, Marilyn Monroe stands out on her own as a unique movie goddess, and Warhol's making multicolor clones of her gives her another dimension. Then bringing these clones to life as a cosplay takes them from being iconic to being rather menacing avatars.

In a way, like finding yourself in a real zombie apocalypse. But with multicolored Marilyn Monroe things instead of zombies.

[–]Mechanikore 1 point2 points ago

SIGH

[–]melanarchy -1 points0 points ago

Downvote cause the poster didn't know it was Lichtenstein and copped out with "pop art"

[–]Cw_Ew 24 points25 points ago

Would love to try this for Halloween if I could get a good yellow wig. Although everyone will think I'm trying to be Lady Gaga then :/

[–]Minotaur_in_house 12 points13 points ago

I thought it was until I pulled up the thumbnail. Then I recognized the piece.

Edit: But I think you should do it.

[–]spagnitz 8 points9 points ago

isolate and drink plenty of fluids

[–]Timibumatay 12 points13 points ago

Wouldn't it be easier to come dressed as a Campbell's soup can?

[–]flounder19 10 points11 points ago

[–]Ezl 1 point2 points ago

Wrong artist - Lichtenstein

[–]bearodactylrak 4 points5 points ago

Can someone enlighten me why this has suddenly surfaced as a costume in the last couple years? I never saw it referenced at all until last year when I saw no less than 3 women dressed as it.

[–]sfdmfcssfd 3 points4 points ago

Chicken pox...

[–]george1st 3 points4 points ago

my sister's friend wants to be in costume design she painted my sister's face.... here's a photo: http://imgur.com/A1Myj

Yeah this one looks better...

[–]mrpopenfresh 5 points6 points ago

Roy Liechtenstein, it was all the rage two halloweens ago.

[–]aharddayznight 1 point2 points ago

every make up artist ever has done this. it's hit the "overdone" list in most cosmetics schools now. i've never done it myself but several colleagues of mine have.

[–]eric0rr 2 points3 points ago

TIL that half toning made extremely small dots

[–]omphalos008 3 points4 points ago

10/10 would bang

[–]andresaveiro 2 points3 points ago

The artist of this famous pop art would be Roy Lichtenstein!

[–]squashbelly 2 points3 points ago

i thought it was lady gaga :/

[–]umphreak789 3 points4 points ago

I saw "Pop Tart Inspired." Reminds me of the frosted strawberry kind.

[–]morganshen 1 point2 points ago

I... Really like this for some reason.

[–]IntyreMac31 1 point2 points ago

It's the eyebrows that get me.

[–]chiburaska 1 point2 points ago

Kept waiting for the face to slowly turn and stare at me.

[–]invalidusernamee 1 point2 points ago

I was reading this too fast and I thought it said Pop Tart inspired costume and then I clicked on it and was really confused.

[–]IDlOT 1 point2 points ago

Anybody else read Poptart inspired?

[–]VeNGenZ 0 points1 point ago

Sure did. And it still made sense.

[–]Gnippots 0 points1 point ago

Does she have a Nike logo on her neck?

[–]deek1618 1 point2 points ago

Ben-Day dots, not "Pop Art".

[–]CALLZmLIKEiSEEZm 0 points1 point ago

Roy Lichtenstein, selling comic book art for millions since a long time ago

[–]t_hab 0 points1 point ago

I would feel so weird hitting on a girls dressed like that. I would do it anyway, but I would feel pretty weird.

[–]misshappimess 1 point2 points ago

Where am I right now, Pinterest?

[–]lolpenguinz 0 points1 point ago

[–]ClockworkINTP 0 points1 point ago

[–]CrispyCanolies 0 points1 point ago

[–]misanthr0p1c 0 points1 point ago

Dots should be a lot smaller.

[–]bridge2water 0 points1 point ago

Chicken pox. As someone who is just getting over shingles (adult version of chicken pox).

[–]zeldaprime 0 points1 point ago

I thought it said pop tart :/ was disappointed

[–]GeneralEchidna 0 points1 point ago

I saw this as Pop-Tart, with Strawberry sprinkles.

[–]fhi08 0 points1 point ago

Not sure if dude, uncertain of fap... edit:fapped anyways...

[–]The_Bravinator 1 point2 points ago

My brother and his girlfriend did a REALLY awesome one of these for a photoshoot. I got all excited to post the picture, but then I realized I'd be better off cutting off both of my hands than posting a picture of a pretty girl I care about on Reddit.

[–]piratesbooty 0 points1 point ago

This is not correct by the way. Ben Day dots only came in four colors. The way they overlapped they created a secondary group of colors. Ben Day dots were also never black. Fail on pop art.

[–]Crazyfloat -1 points0 points ago

I've never seen this or I can't remember it, but that's awesome. Thank you for sharing.

[–]carROAWR1 0 points1 point ago

Thought it said Poptart

[–]lalafish 0 points1 point ago

Damn it! This was going to be my Halloween costume this year. It came to me after working at the Art Institute of Chicago all summer, I thought I was being original... oh well.

[–]liarliarplants4hire 0 points1 point ago

She is a pretty girl.

[–]cheemo 0 points1 point ago

[–]SadPanda2703 0 points1 point ago

Reddit explain to me, why do people upvote reposts?

[–]magicaxis 0 points1 point ago

Alas, for i have but one upvote to give

[–]AndersBM 0 points1 point ago

[–]Judge_Hate 0 points1 point ago

Comic book lady gaga?

[–]SpArTiCu5 0 points1 point ago

For some reason, i expect it to turn and stare into my soul...

[–]Lasabar -1 points0 points ago

Anyone else think it looks like a dude in drag? (or maybe it is, don't know yet)

[–]MrTweak 0 points1 point ago

This is actually very creative. I've never seen anything like it. Good find :)

[–]bigfishh -4 points-3 points ago

You do realize it's actually a 1 to 1 copy from a very famous artist?

[–]palpablescalpel 8 points9 points ago

I think he's saying that it's a creative idea to imitate it and pull it off so well, not that she came up with it on her own. I mean, if she'd just invented that character and dressed as her, it wouldn't make any sense and really wouldn't be creative at all.

[–]bigfishh 0 points1 point ago

My definition of being creative is different I guess. To me it means that you come up with new stuff, it's not about copying. The copy is really good, as I said 1 to 1 it looks really good. But it's not creative as the guy said, neither is it "inspired" as in the title. When you're inspired you have your muse so to say, but you always add something of your own and create something new out of it.

Like you said, a good imitation if anything. A very nice copy. Looks really good, it's just not creative at all, when it's an exact replica of something else.

[–]Howard_Beale 0 points1 point ago

Roy Lichtenstein.

[–]DellaRuth -1 points0 points ago

Old. So old.

[–]FakeWings 1 point2 points ago

New to me

[–]Sullgirl 0 points1 point ago

Thought I was the only one.

[–]frodeem 0 points1 point ago

saw her at Wicker Park Fest last month

[–]imamoonmonster -2 points-1 points ago

I used this as inspiration for my Halloween costume last year. How do I add a pic on this damn app?

[–]LoopyLine -3 points-2 points ago

A Teacher of mine about a year ago took us to the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan she really enjoyed this painting that had the same theme as this picture, all the dots on the pop art were hand painted. Later that year she was Caught having sex with one of our classmates. We're in High School. I still think it has something to do with the Pop art

[–]shiverBoots -2 points-1 points ago

Expected scary .gif Not disappointed.

[–]weaselodeath 0 points1 point ago

Goddamnit Lichtenstein and Warhol are so insanely overrated and passé.

[–]esmusssosein -2 points-1 points ago

[–]iamagainstit -5 points-4 points ago

the dots are too small/not close enough together. for comparison

[–]Xani -1 points0 points ago

haha. I literally did a project exactly like this today.

[–]Mind_Lasher -1 points0 points ago

Reminds me of old comics

[–]FatNerdGuy -4 points-3 points ago

Yeah...don't see this EACH AND EVERY HALLOWEEN..

[–]Wizwalrus 0 points1 point ago

In my art class we're doing Ray Lichtenstein paintings
