Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Argh, Jupiter is fucking terrifying to me.

[–]Triadninja 48 points49 points ago

You should listen to what Jupiter sounds like. And yes, thats really Jupiter making those sounds.

[–]nukalurk 16 points17 points ago

Serious question, how does it make these sounds? Where are these sounds actually coming from and what's recording them?

[–]thane_of_cawdor 16 points17 points ago

It's the sounds of electromagnetic dust and other charged particles, I think. Recorded with an electromagnetic recorder. Here's a video of what an electromagnetic recorder can pick up on earth from everyday appliances

N.B. - I'm not well versed in any of this stuff so please, anyone more knowledgeable, please add onto this and correct me where I'm wrong.

[–]sgSaysR 2 points3 points ago

Jupiters magnetic poles emit strong radio waves. That's the basics of it.

[–]SparkzOut 9 points10 points ago

Wow. I can't begin to explain what I just heard... It was beautiful, yet creepy. Just. wow.

[–]RuprectGern 9 points10 points ago

ALL THESE WORLDS
ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA
ATTEMPT NO
LANDING THERE

[–]Vorokar 8 points9 points ago

Combined with the gif, it's more than a little unnerving.

[–]Nigel_Vertigo 11 points12 points ago

I'm not scared by much, but the thought of falling into Jupiter's atmosphere and it just getting thicker and thicker until it crushes me is horrifying.

[–]Jimmy1Sock 7 points8 points ago

I love watching that. Trying to wrap my head round what those storms would be like.

[–]combatchuck 6 points7 points ago

Heavy, man.

[–]ledgenskill 2 points3 points ago

Fuck, honestly cant make my mind up if its majestical or scary :S

[–]endlessnight34 101 points102 points ago

Cant tell if Jupiter, or coffee...

[–]weasel-like 43 points44 points ago

Mmmmm, space coffee.

[–]lukejames1111 17 points18 points ago

Spoffee.

[–]saintNIC 4 points5 points ago

or prolapse

[–]shorty6049 5 points6 points ago

what does this have to do with Eminem albums?

[–]deja-vu-comment 191 points192 points ago

Since I have experience researching NASA stuff from one of their programs, combined with my skepticism regarding the authenticity of the image, I did a little Googling.

This is re-processed Voyager 1 Mosaic. This was evidently the original image, unedited.

[–]shoffing 42 points43 points ago

/u/deja-vu-comment is a bot that reposts the top comment from reposts. The formatting in the original comment must've thrown it off, as it only posted half of it.

[–]elbruce 48 points49 points ago

All space images are processed, and all processing choices are arbitrary. There's no such thing as a "true image."

[–]femanonette 68 points69 points ago

I won't lie, upon learning about how the colors featured in photographs of galaxies and planets were all processed and not "real" in Earth Science, a part of me died as a child.

[–]kilo4fun 50 points51 points ago

They mostly just get frequency compressed into the visible light range. You actually lose data that way.

Say your original spectrum was like this: |---|---|---|---|--|--|--|--|--|--|-|-|-|||||||

And gets "shrunk" to this : |---|--|-||

This is because longer wavelengths (radio, microwave, infrared) get remapped to the red side of the visual spectrum and shorter wavelengths (ultraviolent, xray, gamma) get remapped to the violet side of the visual spectrum. This is a lossy process.

TL;DR Our eyes suck.

[–]SweetNeo85 3 points4 points ago

Wait, even the planets? We have natural light pictures of Earth for sure, right? Don't we also have natural light images of all the other planets from space probes and stuff?

[–]mother_trucker 9 points10 points ago

Well, what you perceive to be a "natural light" pictures of an object is actually the light emitted by the object as seen by your human eye. It is not possible, as far as I know, to exactly reproduce the response function of the human eye with electronic pixels and filters. This is part of why the colors are never quite "right" in digital photos.

But if you're asking if we have blue, green, and red filters on satellites that can approximately reconstruct an image as you would see it with your eye, then, yes, yes we do. It's just as good as a digital camera, really.

The most misleading astronomical false-color pictures you'll see is when either (1) the picture is outside the visible range of your eye (ultraviolet or infrared light), or (2) the filter is designed to pick out light from a specific atom (like oxygen) that your eye isn't specially sensitive to. This usually means that pictures of nebula and galaxies are pretty untrustworthy.

[–]TwasARockLobsta 6 points7 points ago

If you flew around the solar system, the plants would look the way you learned. If you looked at a nebula, you would likely see nothing at all, depending on what it consists of.

[–]SeverePsychosis 11 points12 points ago

I processed it even harder. http://i.imgur.com/gytAI.jpg

[–]shorty6049 7 points8 points ago

looks like coffee with cream in it

[–]Wild2098 3 points4 points ago

How come these large storms don't appear to have an "eye" like the hurricanes we have?

[–]confuseray 9 points10 points ago

that storm can fit four Earths, side by side.

The eyes themselves would have storms inside.

[–]wazoheat 2 points3 points ago

This is not correct: the scales would not be the same if Jupiter had Earth-like storms, due to having a different Coriolis parameter an Rossby radius of deformation. But the real reason they don't have eye's is that they aren't anything like earth-bound storms (see my other comment for details).

[–]EricTheWeirdo 2 points3 points ago

They're so big that the eyes have storms within them. I think.

[–]Jacks_Grin 5 points6 points ago

Theres no such thing as flashbacks. Theres no such thing as flashbacks.

[–]liamkun 2 points3 points ago

So are all the pictures you see of Jupiter from like flybys and stuff, guessing the colours?

[–]hcumberdale1 4 points5 points ago

They're real. You can see Jupiter's colors with amateur telescopes from your backyard. You can see the belts, the great red spot, and also the shadows of the moons as the transit in front of it.

Yea science!

[–]SwollenPickle 14 points15 points ago

that shit terrifies me

[–]RedManDancing 23 points24 points ago

Jupiter's surface always reminds me of marble.

[–]tritonice 20 points21 points ago

"surface" = cloud tops

[–]superlumenal 13 points14 points ago

Yep, or an oil painting.

[–]srikamaraja 17 points18 points ago

I love the SFW porn network on Reddit. /r/abandonedporn is a favorite of mine. Plus, whenever you tell someone that you're really into the stuff there, they give you a hilarious look after seeing the name.

[–]s4lt3d 3 points4 points ago

One thing I don't understand, why don't the gases eventually merge into one bland gas? For instance when I stir milk into my coffee its awesome but eventually it just turns into one color.

[–]ImSamuelJacksonBitch 2 points3 points ago

Various densities. If you mixed mercury into your coffee, it would not mix in.

My coffee does this sometimes if the cream is old.

[–]sportserh 0 points1 point ago

Or a close up of my coffee with cream and sugar.

[–]grizz281 0 points1 point ago

Crazy to think that each of those "eddies" are (I'm guessing here) probably the size of countries, if not continents.

[–]MaximumUltra 0 points1 point ago

What would I see if I fell through the top clouds?

[–]whatisitdragons 0 points1 point ago

Fantastic image of the Great Red Spot. When I was a kid the fact that two Earths could fit easily inside that mega-storm would blow my mind.

[–]coochiesmoocher 0 points1 point ago

What is the topology of the great red spot? If you were flying over the clouds, would it be a huge valley surrounded by towering walls? Perhaps the opposite - a bulge on the clouds? Or is it just all a uniform height?

[–]squidsquidsquid 0 points1 point ago

All I could think was "Renaissance abstraction".

[–]busfullofchinks -1 points0 points ago

Umm Oil painting?

[–]truearmasfracture 0 points1 point ago

[–]baconhead 0 points1 point ago

"Close-up." Jupiter is so large that this close up could show all of Earth many times over.

[–]Renix 0 points1 point ago

The fact that this is REAL blows my mind, even if the colors are enhanced.

[–]football2106 0 points1 point ago

And how many earths fit into this part of jupiter?

[–]amolad 0 points1 point ago

Jupiter by Vincent Van Gogh.
