Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

looks pretty similar to the XDF pic of 2007 to me

We've got to go deeper.

Space is cool...

And big. Really, really big.

and here I am jerking off

It's okay, there's time to do both.

It's crazy to think that the oldest galaxy we've found recently is nearly 14 billion light-years away. And, that if the universe is older than 14 billion years, that light hasn't reached us yet or is impossible to reach us given everything in-between it.

This fucked my whole day up, I have to be honest. I cannot deal with humanity being so insignificant.

[–]zweeback 6 points7 points ago

And then I thought to myself, "How on Earth can we be alone?"

Then further confused myself by the wording.

Maybe if there's an afterlife you just kinda pop up somewhere else..

And to think, this is also just a tiny fraction of a small part of the sky sky. 5,550 galaxies there. I try to fathom how many there would be if we looked in every direction.

Big things comes from small things.

Yep, just remember that everything you do every day virtually doesn't matter in the huge scheme of things. The daily affairs are merely karma among germs.

Context from hubblesite.org

Like photographers assembling a portfolio of best shots, astronomers have assembled a new, improved portrait of mankind's deepest-ever view of the universe. Called the eXtreme Deep Field, or XDF, the photo was assembled by combining 10 years of NASA Hubble Space Telescope photographs taken of a patch of sky at the center of the original Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The XDF is a small fraction of the angular diameter of the full Moon. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field is an image of a small area of space in the constellation Fornax, created using Hubble Space Telescope data from 2003 and 2004. By collecting faint light over many hours of observation, it revealed thousands of galaxies, both nearby and very distant, making it the deepest image of the universe ever taken at that time. The new full-color XDF image reaches much fainter galaxies and includes very deep exposures in red light from Hubble's new infrared camera, enabling new studies of the earliest galaxies in the universe. The XDF contains about 5,500 galaxies even within its smaller field of view. The faintest galaxies are one ten-billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see.

it looks 3D.. or is that just me

[–]Asillyn00b 1 point2 points ago

And somewhere in there, you just have to think that theres more life out there

[–]WTFWatch 0 points1 point ago

There's even more in the small black squares in the image, IT NEVER ENDS!

[–]tumescentpie 0 points1 point ago

The mind blowing thing for me isn't even how big everything in this picture is compared to earth, but that this is just a small shot over 500 hours and it is just a tiny patch of the greater universe... It is hard to imagine how small we are.

[–]yousirnaime 0 points1 point ago

did this make anybody else a little light headed / dizzy?

[–]Boblow_Jihobey 0 points1 point ago

What is the really bright star thingy about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom right?

[–]adssb 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one who sees a pattern in this photo? All of the "lights" (suns, galaxies, or whatever) are in curved linear patterns. Think of them as strands of lighted bulbs on a Christmas tree . . . this may help you see what I see. Start looking in the upper left, then middle left, then move across the photograph. They mostly follow a curved pattern.

[–]MarlanaS 0 points1 point ago

Sometimes I like to go out in my backyard at night and just look at the sky and imagine all these galaxies out there and how all that blackness never ends (as far as we know). It's really amazing to think about just how tiny we are. I love space.

[–]thekind253 0 points1 point ago

It's incredible

[–]Emilleigh 1 point2 points ago

I want to go to there.

[–]hidekipooj 0 points1 point ago

Clearly the Universe is a Giant Alien God http://imgur.com/57Eky

[–]xgunwingx 0 points1 point ago

and still...the only thing we see in the far off distance is black.
