  • Because this subreddit is meant for Muslims and those interested in Islam, we would like to keep it a friendly place for those people to discuss topics they care about. Please keep your posts courteous and show respect for your fellow Redditors who take the time to articulate their beliefs. There have recently been a lot of trolls whose main intent is to insult people or disrupt discussions. Persistently rude behavior can result in a permanent ban.

  • Obvious attempts at trolling, such as context-free insults and obscene images, will be banned without warning.

  • Feel free to resubmit links of interesting content from other subreddits, but do not cross-link to this subreddit in order to create an upvote or downvote campaign in violation of reddiquette.

  • Please do not cross-post content from this subreddit into other subreddits as well. Fair is fair. Abusive posters that violate these rules will be issued a warning for a first offense and permanently banned for a second offense.

  • Due to previous abuse of readers in r/Islam by a few determined trolls, those relatively new accounts that do little more than repeatedly troll /r/Islam are subject to banning and/or removal of any and all submissions and comments. We understand there are valid uses for throwaway accounts such as privacy, so if your throwaway account is moderated without cause, please message the moderators and we will take any appropriate action.

  • Users, depending upon the situation, will be administered a warning, and then a ban for a repeat offense, if these rules are violated.

Lol that's just awful PR, I don't know how the guy posting that thought it was a good idea to do so.

Also ice cream better not be haraam :'(

[–]wojx 4 points5 points ago

Yeah. Owned.

[–]h4qq 0 points1 point ago

It's not lol

Gelatin can be an issue, but remember Gelatin is not always derived from pork, it can be from beef.

Secondly, a good friend of mine did some research on Gelatin and its chemical composition (he's a PhD in biomedical engineering) and he shared his results with some local shuyoukh and came to the conclusion that the chemical composition has been altered and is not the same anymore when compared to the original form when it was derived from the pork - therefore it is halal (there is supporting evidence of ahadith where the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him, said that when wine is left out for long time it turns to vinegar, and that vinegar is permissible to use).

[–]neko2010 19 points20 points ago

Their website was up last night and received hundreds of comments!! They did delete their facebook. The support was tremendous though!

[–]rothweih 8 points9 points ago

That's good to hear. However, it would be nice to know if perhaps the company itself got pissed at the person running the facebook page.

[–]irish_shindig 4 points5 points ago

The owner himself ran the facebook page actually. Here's the link to the article. However, he said "The user had an icon next to the name that said 'Pakistan,'" which, if true, means it may have been an honest mistake.

[–]Mr_Stillian 10 points11 points ago

Bullshit damage control. The question was about gelatin content, not delivery. The guy obviously had access to the ice cream if he was asking, so if the pres wasn't trying to be a jackass he could've just found the answer to the question at hand.

[–]mogleyNW 9 points10 points ago

The datestamp at the top:

September 21 at 9:29pm near Sheridan, WY

edit: ..9:28pm

[–]irish_shindig 2 points3 points ago

Good point.

[–]rothweih 4 points5 points ago

That seems like a stretch. In no way did the person ask "do you ship to pakistan?" she asked about ingredients.

[–]supply_side_warrior -2 points-1 points ago

So Muslims do cyberbullying afterall. Hardly non-violent.

[–]amatmn 24 points25 points ago

Not quite related to Islam, so I hope you don't mind me posting. I am lactose intolerant and suffer from migraines. I have to be very careful with food labels as well.

With folks who are serious vegetarians, gluten-free, diabetic, or who follow religious dietary restrictions, you would think people would be more aware of these types of questions. My grocery store now shows more special labeling for people who need this extra information.

But it's nice to see that the person who was treated rudely was backed up by another poster. Hopefully it makes this company think twice.

[–]2Xprogrammer 6 points7 points ago

I once asked at a frozen yogurt place if the yogurt had gelatin. The person working there responded, "no, we only have vanilla and chocolate".

[–]amatmn 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, people unfortunately still haven't figured it out. But I have noticed many companies have. For instance, since I am lactose intolerant, I can't eat ice cream at all. However, Breyer's now has Lactose-free Vanilla. And I can now find lactose-free milk.

In my town I see "Halal" labels along with the "gluten-free" and "kosher" ones. I just figured it's something businesses are more aware of than they used to be.

[–]FlyingKanga 0 points1 point ago

Hate when that happens.. Also if you ask them if it's halal, "What's a halal?!"

[–]zalemam 4 points5 points ago

No one in the US knows what Halal is, or very very few people do.

[–]leonsecure 2 points3 points ago

You cannot expect them to know if it's halal, but they have to know if there is gelain in the ice cream!

[–]tinkthank 2 points3 points ago

I love how he manager to lie about the timestamp and location being set to Pakistan when it clearly states Wyoming.

[–]IAmKramerTheRacist 4 points5 points ago

I just tried to Facebook this company but the link would just throw me to my homepage. Guess they deleted it lol

[–]Starlightbreaker 8 points9 points ago

lol, that ice cream store social media operator is an idiot.

you gotta separate business and personal matters

[–]DeamonKnight 4 points5 points ago

wow, I hope they fire the PR rep.

[–]sammythemc 2 points3 points ago

I'm hoping that wasn't a PR rep, because even a non-professional should really know better than to think that way, let alone post it in the name of an entity they're supposed to be boosting.

[–]DeamonKnight 0 points1 point ago

you'd think, but there are some seriously ignorant people out there.

[–]mogleyNW 1 point2 points ago

it was the OWNER, oops..

[–]Angel-Of-Death 5 points6 points ago

As a Muslim. I found this funny. LOL. Yes, ignorant none the less.

[–]bakedphilosopher 3 points4 points ago

that is disgusting and ignorant. for the future just check to see if it is Kosher. or if it says: K-Gelatin.

[–]angriers 2 points3 points ago

Best bit:

"Schaeffer said in a phone interview that all flavors of Wilcoxson’s ice cream contain kosher gelatin."

http://www.bozemandailychronicle.com/news/economy/article_ff552994-07fc-11e2-889a-001a4bcf887a.html

[–]mogleyNW 1 point2 points ago

Seriously, could the owner not have just responded with that?

[–]nzeeshan 5 points6 points ago

Here's a link to their Yelp page

[–]Severok 1 point2 points ago

According to this article the Company president Matt Schaeffer stated that he had misread facebook as saying she was located in pakistan.

Should we give any benefit of doubt that it may have possibly been an honest mistake by an overworked person quickly looking over correspondence? Or should we all grab our pitchforks over the possibility of muslims being minorly insulted again?

Given that the reply was with regards to her percived local it is possible his story is true. He didn't say anything along the lines of 'We don't want to sell to your type'

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

I am gonna go with a No on the BOTD. I don't think SHERIDAN looks like PAKISTAN.

[–]Shopno 5 points6 points ago

If you can show me anywhere in the picture that says the person is from Pakistan, I will give the owner benefit of the doubt. Also, if a person says I love your ice cream, that means the person already ate it a few times, therefore implies that either the person actually went to the store or the ice cream was delivered to him before. So I don't see how one can think that its an issue of perceived local.

[–]idosillythings 2 points3 points ago

Apparently, the owner has come out and admitted that it was a mistake.

[–]tinkthank 2 points3 points ago

Thats a load of bull. He claims that he saw Pakistan, but the screenshot shows Wyoming.

[–]idosillythings 1 point2 points ago

That's true. I don't really care at this point. The business is already taking a huge hit from it. No matter what, the damage is already done.

[–]Radtor 0 points1 point ago

Harm has already been done.

[–]awesomefaceninjahead 0 points1 point ago

What harm?

[–]mogleyNW 2 points3 points ago

PR.

[–]Vogner 3 points4 points ago

But, but, it is Montana!

[–]eskick 1 point2 points ago

Someone x/post this please

[–]006ajnin 0 points1 point ago

While the company's reply may have been insensitive and even rude (assuming the CEO is lying now because of the PR damage), how exactly does this episode demonstrate "we are not violent people"? Violence wouldn't have been appropriate no matter what the company said.

[–]brendanrivers 0 points1 point ago

this is funny to me

[–]TapionXIII 1 point2 points ago

Thats fricken wrong.

[–]donfanuci -1 points0 points ago

its freaking ice cream who cares

[–]nzeeshan 0 points1 point ago

Let's tweet about their rude behavior. What's the hashtag?

[–]rasheemo 7 points8 points ago

NO, giving them attention is not the correct response, lest the streisand effect grants them more business.

[–]tinkthank -5 points-4 points ago

She should draw cartoons insulting the company.

[–]rahl404 7 points8 points ago

Yeah, but then she would be sued for libel and she would be charged a large fine.

[–]lalib 3 points4 points ago

If it's true or if it is an opinion there's no grounds on which to sue.

That ice cream company is a poopy buthead face. See, it's easy!

[–]replicasex 3 points4 points ago

Libel is a very hard thing to prove by American law. It would be more likely she got sued for trademark infringement or something.

Unlike the UK America has very weak libel laws. Parody and criticism are completely protected.

[–]IronShaikh -4 points-3 points ago

also Islam would be sued for trying to stifle the ice cream makers freedom of speech.

[–]brendanrivers 0 points1 point ago

yeah, thats what islam did... they "stifled" american free speech. TIL stifle = murder

[–]IronShaikh 0 points1 point ago

I can see how someone could stifle free speech...But i don't know how you could murder free speech.

perhaps you need english comprehension lessons.

[–]bugzbunz -4 points-3 points ago

What a disgraceful overreaction.. You're threatening a person's livelihood because he assumed the guy was in Pakistan? So what? Where's the deen in this? This man didn't abuse a fellow Muslim, he made a mistake in his assumption. What a shame really. I find this so embarrassing and I hope this goes away fast, and inshallah the guy doesn't lose his business.

If anything, Muslims should make an effort to buy his ice cream, apologize for the overreaction, and give him the benefit of the doubt. Find a way to get closer to Islam, and use your intelligence. If you're critical of him or exposing this event, you will be judged on it. You are threatening a man and his family's livelihood. You're behaving like hyenas instead of the best of humanity.

[–]khazakant 1 point2 points ago

...you're kidding, right?

[–]adamantium111 -1 points0 points ago

? not sure if serious or not...

[–]wenoc -3 points-2 points ago

I have no idea how this is supposed to show islam isn't violent. All I see is some illiterate girl overreacting.

And for the record, I'd much rather be mistaken for a Pakistani than for an American.

[–]tinkthank 0 points1 point ago

An illiterate person who knows how to read, write, and post on facebook? TIL.

[–]wenoc 0 points1 point ago

Oh please, way to miss the point. How does that show Islam isn't violent?

Using u and ur is grounds for illiteracy in my book anyway.

[–]garyelofant 0 points1 point ago

...wow then most americans must be illiterate.

[–]papakop -3 points-2 points ago

Initially I was offended by this post, but as I started looking at the comments on r/facepalm, my skepticism grew. Something definitely doesn't smell right about this. I have a feeling the owner maybe telling the truth. If that is the case, the local masaajid and islamic associations in Billings, Montana should come out in support of the owner and his business. If not, they can still approach him and try to be polite and get him to know more about the Muslims in the area. That would win his heart over.

[–]adamantium111 -1 points0 points ago

what??
