Well, honest though. You can't come up to me and tell me with a straight face you believe in a guy who lives in the sky and created the world in seven days. And if you say, "Well I don't believe in that bit, just the other bits" I must point out that this sounds a bit like, "Well you're crazy to believe in unicorns, but there is such a thing as an immortal soul and I know my grandma is with the angels in heaven".

Church is mostly a social club, just admit it and stop lying to your damn kids, we have to put up with their crazy shit until they figure it out.

[–]534seeds 2 points3 points ago

The churches I've been to are more like "shut up and listen" clubs.

[–]EvilSteak 0 points1 point ago

I believe in God. He's not a magical wizard that lives in the sky. You can make anything sound stupid when you say it like that.

There was nothing, then everything came from nothing, which is impossible, but it happened, so then there were monkeys and they became humans.

You make yourself and all other atheists look ridiculous when you talk like this. You need to remember that you're not always right.

[–]JaharNarishma 1 point2 points ago

There was nothing, then everything came from nothing, which is impossible, but it happened

This logical fallacy doesn't solve the problem, it merely pushes it back. So you say the universe can't just have been, a creator must have made it. But then, what made the creator? Are you saying the he just must have been? Well if we go along that conclusion, we can just apply it to the universe, and then there is no need for a creator.

then there were monkeys and they became humans.

No. Monkeys and humans have a common ancestor. What this means is that at one point in time there existed a certain species. Then something happened which caused part of this species to develop differently than the other. They could have been separated by a changing geography, perhaps one moved away from the other, etc. This caused them to evolve different traits best suited to survival in their respective environments (i.e. natural selection happened). Millions of years later, we're one branch, of once branch, of one branch, ..., of that species and monkeys are another.

I think that's suitable for ELI5.

[–]animalcub 2 points3 points ago

Evolution is not up for debate and hasn't been for about 150 years. Every bit of evidence ever found in fossils, DNA, and biology supports it. The big bang has not been up for debate since the 50's everything in quantum physics, the hadron collider, and cosmological observation support it. You should understand that each those groups independently arrives at the same conclusion, they do not sit around and conspire to make up stories. In science everyone in your field wants to prove you wrong, the theories that stand have done so because no one can prove them wrong, even the experts in their respective areas of study.

Alright. How would you say it?

[–]gshejob 3 points4 points ago

I'm a helicopter.

[–]helalo 3 points4 points ago

im a jet, STOP OFFENDING ME.

[–]TheSuitGuy 2 points3 points ago

If God wanted us to be jets, he would've given us wings!
Sincerely, a tugboat.

[–]sdbear 5 points6 points ago

I like the attitude but we are living in a world where the religious scream "God is great," while beheading real live living people. Nope, they are not little children pretending they are a helicopter, they can be (and too many are) real monsters hell bent on causing as much pain and suffering as they are able.

[–]ellipsisca 0 points1 point ago

or.. he was just making a joke.

[–]rivea[S] 6 points7 points ago

Sorry, I'm on here most days but must have missed it. I APOLOGISE!

[–]VicariousWolf 2 points3 points ago

The difference is that adults can vote and push laws to oppress other people based on their beliefs. Children can't.

I hate this quote because it's sending a wrong message.

[–]razor150 3 points4 points ago

How many times does this quote need to be posted?

[–]ellipsisca 4 points5 points ago

Every post is someones first.

[–]violatedchimp 3 points4 points ago

As many times as it takes for reddit to run out of karma

[–]Abyakuya109 2 points3 points ago

Enough for some people to get the point.

[–]oh_hai_dan 3 points4 points ago

I've never seen it before so....

[–]JaharNarishma 0 points1 point ago

Exactly. And I don't particularly mind seeing it again. I rather like reading it. I have no idea what this chap sounds like, but I imagine him talking with a slight English accent. It's quite enjoyable.

[–]bodaciousbilly 0 points1 point ago

Smug level: brave

[–]ChiefMountain -2 points-1 points ago

Does anyone else think he looks like a Twilight vampire here? Is that the point?

[–]mash3735 0 points1 point ago

i fucking love helicopters. i actually wanted to be one as a child.

[–]Radical_3D -1 points0 points ago

Maybe now you guys will appreciate the first thing I ever posted on reddit.

[–]Wedhro 1 point2 points ago

When people says "I'm a [insert religion here]" I just say "why?". Fun ensues soon.

[–]doctorwerewolf 1 point2 points ago

I love this so much. It does lose quite a bit of its hilarity when written down and lacking his perfect delivery. Lucky me I can read it in his voice in my head.

[–]InvalidArguement 1 point2 points ago

This has been on the front page a dozen times.

[–]FrizaAngelo 0 points1 point ago

I've seen it on the front page once. If you've seen it dozens of times, I think you need to get out more.

[–]sirbinxalot 0 points1 point ago

What a fucking asshole. What happened to the atheist proverb "don't be a dick?" I'm not religious, but can't we just make fun of fundamentalists and zealots?

[–]IDontherun 0 points1 point ago

TIL who the fuck this Amstell bloke is.

[–]adzug 0 points1 point ago

a true and good attitude to take as long as theyre not trying to stuff it down your throat.

[–]PyrokineticDew 0 points1 point ago

"and I'm a choo choo train" points to Jew "You. Get in."

[–]whatfellfromthemoon -3 points-2 points ago

oh this one again ...great....

[–]SamReidn -4 points-3 points ago

Oh look, its THIS post again.

I want to punch his face after seeing this pic over and over and over and over.

[–]What33 -2 points-1 points ago

So he doesn't want to make fun of religious people, but then he goes right ahead and makes fun of them with an incredibly condescending remark.

Makes sense.

[–]Beetlebum95 2 points3 points ago

thatsthejoke.jpg

[–]Rebornthisway -1 points0 points ago

He sums it up so brilliantly. I'm not even mad that this is a blatant repost. It's just so perfect.

[–]schrankage 0 points1 point ago

Oh it's the daily "Amstell" post.

[–]Surreal_Effect -1 points0 points ago

I feel like this was just on here...

[–]thatgamerguy -2 points-1 points ago

This quote accurately sums up how /r/atheism acts.

[–]DeFex 3 points4 points ago

Wait, a subreddit only consists of exact clones of the same person?

[–]thatgamerguy -2 points-1 points ago

Although you say that sarcastically, it's scarily accurate.

[–]DeFex 4 points5 points ago

Except I do not agree with you, yet here we are on the same subreddit.

[–]notsuresure 0 points1 point ago

In my experience it's the total opposite. /r/atheism favors antitheism, and tends to be pretty direct about it. Condescending remarks are not common.

[–]omfg_the_lings 1 point2 points ago

Condescending remarks are not common.

ಠ_ಠ

[–]notsuresure -1 points0 points ago

It's a common misconception.

Criticism, analysis, discussion, and even insulting remarks do not equal condescendence.

[–]omfg_the_lings 2 points3 points ago

The "holier than thou" attitude frequently displayed on this subreddit does, though.

[–]hacksoncode 0 points1 point ago

Keyword displayed. Remember that every comment on any post in this subreddit comes from less than 0.1% of the subscribers.

It's kind of like pointing at the religious extremists and saying "see, all religion sucks".

Note, BTW, that I subscribe to the validity of this last comment, so Hail Eris!

[–]notsuresure -1 points0 points ago

I just don't think it is that common. I see more people claiming that it happens than it actually happening.

[–]omfg_the_lings 1 point2 points ago

You're experience has been different than mine then, clearly.

[–]Lemonpartycrasher 0 points1 point ago

He has more experience too. You have 10 posts in /r/atheism, he has 144.

http://www.redditinvestigator.com/

[–]omfg_the_lings 0 points1 point ago

Can you tell how often I browse the forum reading others' posts? There's that attitude I was talking about again!

[–]iamyouyouaremeiamyou 1 point2 points ago

You comparing his attitude with condescendence completely breaks your argument.

He is not being condescending at all.

[–]Lemonpartycrasher 0 points1 point ago

There's that attitude I was talking about again!

If you think I was being condescending then I think the problem is that you don't know what condescending means.

[–]serlightsalot 0 points1 point ago

Maybe on the internet where anoymity and the fact you're in a debate forum gives you a degree of flexbility in saying what you want.

But in real life I suspect most people here don't bring it up.

[–]manuel_robot_cleaner 1 point2 points ago

It's condescending because their view of history and their origin is absolutely ridiculous. It's easy to be condescending when someone is working off the belief system of a 5 year old.

[–]thatgamerguy 1 point2 points ago

Clearly, any 5 year old could have written the bible....

[–]What33 -3 points-2 points ago

This is probably how most of r/atheism looks too.

[–]ThirdDegreeRape 1 point2 points ago

Needs more jpeg.

Seriously, did you compress this fifteen times in a row just for the fuck of it? If you're going to repost, at least get a decent version of it.
