As a cop, I can confirm this.

[–]Nillix 63 points64 points ago

As a cop, I can deny this. Check! :D

[–]Siethron 74 points75 points ago

you got all D's in high school?

[–]Nillix 29 points30 points ago

No, silly, A's and B's. I just wanted to be a cop since I was, like, six years old. That, or drive a tractor. That being said, I laughed at the photo anyway.

[–]kushmush 49 points50 points ago

A cop that says no silly. Are you in Reno?

[–]ReUsable_Tampon 15 points16 points ago

Cops can say "silly". There's a problem if they say, "Silly goose."

[–]r1y23 8 points9 points ago

It was at this time when I started to pursue the defendant, hereby called "silly goose", down the alley. I then handcuffed the silly goose and took him into custody.

[–]rspeirs 1 point2 points ago

At this time, I, officer reUsable tampon observed a suspect later identified as silly goose. Goose was then taken into custody and transported

[–]rspeirs -1 points0 points ago

I guess reddit doesn't like proper structure

[–]PlutoISaPlanet 5 points6 points ago

c'mon meow...

[–]worrst 3 points4 points ago

Are you the blonde or the black one?

[–]Nonstopx 3 points4 points ago

This is off topic but I always hear cops talking about some crazy encounters. What's the strangest thing you have witnessed?

[–]Nillix 10 points11 points ago

Without getting too specific, probably the naked man, high as a kite, dancing in the center median of the freeway.

[–]Eat_Bacon_nomnomnom 4 points5 points ago

You haven't been a cop very long if that's the weirdest thing you've seen.

[–]reagan2016 5 points6 points ago

Yep. Give it a few more years and he'll get to see a naked man eat a homeless man's face.

[–]Eat_Bacon_nomnomnom 5 points6 points ago

Naked homeless person, handcuffed in the back of a patrol car because he shanked a prostitute for stealing his corner, shitting in the back, and then eating said shit. That was a Tuesday afternoon.

[–]WisconsnNymphomaniac 1 point2 points ago

After my brother became a cop I realized the main service you provide is dealing with the worst people in society so the rest of us don't have to.

[–]Nillix 2 points3 points ago

Correct! Three and a half years. But you know, I'm sure there will be much more over the years. Plus, I've said this before, I'm I highway cop, so I think I get a little less weirdness per day since I'm not in people's homes. I also deal primarily, though not exclusively, with crimes against property versus crimes against people.

[–]Saint_of_Catrumbus -4 points-3 points ago

I did too. I'm only 26 now so I think it's not too late to apply if I made the decision to do so, but I still struggle with that decision for the same reason I never became a cop in the first place.

As I got older I started to realize the police were more often than not the bad guys, and I just can't justify A) aiding a corrupt and oppressive force and B) putting my life on the line just to milk people for parking tickets or smoking pot.

It just seems like less and less these days that cops are good guys at all. I really wish this wasn't the case. I have pretty strong feelings about justice and helping people and I wish I could find a profession in which I could really do this. I hate working in an office doing mundane pointless bullshit (but at least this pointless bullshit doesn't get anyone needlessly hurt).

[–]Nillix 7 points8 points ago

There are plenty of good guy cops. People that are doing the job for the right motivations and reasons. Obviously there are bad ones as well. Which ones do you hear about, here on the Internet? I know with my agency, we've caught a couple of bad guy cops recently. Those cops were unceremoniously arrested, booked, fired, and charges are being pressed for their crimes.

I wake up every morning loving my job, and excited at the prospect of making a difference in someone's life. There are plenty of us out there, and we continue to work. I'd even be comfortable saying there are far more of us than the other type.

The fact that this is something that you worry about is a step in the right direction. Don't let the confirmation bias of the Internet dissuade you.

[–]Saint_of_Catrumbus 1 point2 points ago

I know there are good cops too, but honestly I've just never met any.

It's not just the Internet that gives me this opinion (although it is frustrating to regularly see cops abusing people and suffering no consequences what-so-ever). All of the cops I've ever met or had to deal with have been apathetic towards people, were abusing their position in some way, were being down-right mean to someone needing their help (friend of mine/roommate once got laughed at and left in the dust when asking for assistance from some police he managed to stumble across while walking across the city covered in blood. They didn't even ask what happened), or just generally were being more of a nuisance/threat to people than the local d-bags and gangs.

It's all put a very bad taste in my mouth and I just can't see myself among their ranks. It feels like the police (at least around here, but the Internet shows that my city is not alone in having bad apples at the very least) are mostly quick-to-anger and armed grown-children/bullies. I've thought about trying to ignore it and just apply anyway, but that would put me in a situation where I'd have to either look the other way or get fired or something as there does not appear to be any way to bring crooked cops in this town to justice. It's rotten straight through here. It often feels like one of those crooked-cop films with how laughable the reality is.

Maybe I'll just move, I don't know.

[–]Nillix 0 points1 point ago

Tough situation to be in, and I'm sorry those have been your experiences.

[–]Rivantus 1 point2 points ago

You just dont hear about cops doing their jobs right. Because its not news worthy.

[–]lucianog5 1 point2 points ago

Be a firefighter?

[–]Saint_of_Catrumbus 1 point2 points ago

They're unpaid in my state, and I kind of need to be able to pay the bills (and can't really just up and leave my job whenever there's a fire if I were to volunteer).

[–]GameDrain 1 point2 points ago

If you genuinely believe that cops are more often than not the bad guys, then you really haven't had any hands on experience. Go on a ride along, get involved in some volunteer work with your local PD. You'll find the majority are just people doing a job, then there are some who are doing an exemplary job for all the right reasons, and there are some who are doing a terrible job because they're there for the wrong reasons. But not getting involved because you assume all cops are bad is just an uneducated stance on the issue. Plus, if you ever hope the bad ones to be pushed out, you need to replace them with good ones, and why shouldn't that be you?

[–]Saint_of_Catrumbus -2 points-1 points ago

I'd say please refer to my reply to Nilix for the answer to most of your questions, here.

It's not just an assumption, I've had enough dealings with the police here to see how they operate and the things they do to people. Your point of "be one of the good guys" is one I've considered, but one person alone can't take on an army of over-grown and well armed children. There's not really anyone to report them to or get assistance with.

At this point I feel like my only real option is to stick with my soul-crushing office job and try to make enough money to leave society. I can't justify putting my life on the line for a peanut-salary just to needlessly bust kids smoking pot or some other ridiculous "violation" so that I can continue to fund the pockets of our corrupt officials and politicians. I don't mind putting my life on the line to help someone, but I don't feel there is anything sensible about being shot because someone didn't want a parking ticket or some shit.

[–]GameDrain 0 points1 point ago

why do you assume most police work is pot busting and parking violations? In the city where I work cops don't really even do parking stuff that's handled by a whole different group of people. Just to give you an example of what cops actually do, I went on a ride along in my moderately sized city, and in the three hours I spent with my police officer, we got a call to a shooting. When we got there we searched for bullet casings while other officers combed the neighborhood for the shooter. Then we got a guy with a similar description in the neighborhood. We drove down there and one cop held him at gunpoint while another chased after one of his friends. We took the shooter back to the scene to have the witness ID him. The witness couldn't say for sure that it was him, so we took the shooter back to his parents house where his mom laid into him for running around the neighborhood scaring people. Maybe it didn't make a difference, or maybe it was the wake up call his mother needed to start watching him closer. You'll never know, but its a hell of a way to impact your community so that people don't end up dead. THAT is police work, its what most cops love to do.

Besides the fact that you wouldn't be shot because someone doesn't want a parking ticket, but imagine for a moment if someone did try to shoot at you for that. If you arrest them for that then you just took a dangerous person of the streets. Now they won't lash out at the next person that pisses them off who most likely ISN'T armed.

Your view of policing is just so closed in and soul crushing you miss the point entirely. So maybe you're right, you shouldn't be a cop. But not because being a cop is a bad thing, but because people who need instant gratification or a clear reward for difficult but necessary work are not cut out to be cops.

[–]Saint_of_Catrumbus -2 points-1 points ago

Your piss poor analysis of me is completely false and incorrect. I don't "assume" anything - I know what I see. In my city people are murdered daily on top of massive amounts of other crimes. Nothing is ever done. I've already explained how the police in my city behave in my posts and there is no need to do so once again (which you obviously ignored). The only murders that are investigated are ones in which cops get killed. Those are solved in less than a day as the city shuts down while they rampage through, and then they shut everything down again to throw their men a parade.

Everyone else who has an issue is shit out of luck. The police won't even respond to a call, no matter what it is. I've ceased bothering. Only way to solve anything or help anyone in this city is to do it yourself.

I don't require some "instant-gratification" or reward for doing the right thing. I do it all the time for fucking free and fuck you for suggesting it. I never even implied that. Wake up and realize that not everyone lives in some magical happy paradise where the cops are the good guys in most situations.

Our police here serve as little more than a local government army and a revenue generator. They don't care about people.

[–]GameDrain 0 points1 point ago

how silly of me. I'm sure you, being someone who has only had experience outside the walls of a police department know far better than I do that police everywhere are a bastion of evil and corruption. As someone who works with police on a weekly basis, knows many officers personally and who sees exactly what goes into an investigation homicide or otherwise I can tell you that you clearly have no idea how policing works. Maybe you live in a crappy city, that I don't know, but I can tell you that there are plenty of cops out there who know how to do the job right, and you do them a disservice by assuming everyone is as jaded about the job as you are. And yes, you do assume. I have yet to see you suggest that a department elsewhere would be a better option but because of your local interactions with police you are indeed ASSUMING that the majority of police nationwide are bad or corrupt people and that is just simply not backed up by anything credible.

[–]Elpickle 1 point2 points ago

As a non-cop I can neither confirm, nor deny this.

[–]battleaxjzzhnds 2 points3 points ago

Happy cakeday!

[–]Grizmeer 18 points19 points ago

I would of never known without you.

[–]ItsNeverSunnyInCleve 26 points27 points ago

It's *have (not of), Officer Grizmeer. Further confirming Sarah's point. However, thank you for your duties.

[–]Grizmeer 9 points10 points ago

Haha, nice. Upvote for you.

As an unappriciated Community Service Officer, I can comfirm that I failed to get C's in my GCSE's.

[–]FalconOne 1 point2 points ago

You know, this makes me wonder....

How many redditors do we have are or were cops that were supposed to investigate possible crimes on reddit, but ended up getting addicted to reddit in the process...

[–]Grizmeer 0 points1 point ago

You think I do this at work?

[–]umfk 18 points19 points ago

Is it true that you can become a police officer with bad grades? Over here, as far as I know, you need a good high school diploma to get into the police force. (Germany)

[–]nearlynagol 19 points20 points ago

It varies by state and locality, but most cops have some sort of college education. So, yes it is possible, but it's not like they're completely stupid. (atleast not most of them)

Also, some federal law enforcement agencies, like the FBI, are filled with brilliant people and is a very competitive job market.

[–]thatoneguy889 4 points5 points ago

Most agencies, like the FBI, require at least a Bachelor's for agent positions.

[–]nearlynagol 1 point2 points ago

Yep and many have graduate degrees plus professional work experience is required.

[–]SexualPie 2 points3 points ago

Pretty much, I live in Delaware, (middle of the east coast for foreigners), and there's a minimum of 60 credits from a college required before you even begin basic training. Which, realistically, depending on how many classes you take a year. Could take as long as 2 years on a decent schedule (balancing work and school) to complete.

[–]sgtkcourt 5 points6 points ago

In the past, probably. Now, most departments can be pretty picky about who they take, especially with the large number of applicants with college educations. Most of the patrol officers I know have at least a two year degree, and the majority of the ones coming on within the last ten years have a Bachelors. I work investigations where it's rare to find someone who isn't at least working towards a Masters, and there are quite a few with law degrees. But sure, there are plenty of places that will take a high school graduate over the age of 21 granted you have work experience.

[–]somesthetic 0 points1 point ago

I had two friends I went to high school and college with who both wanted to be local police, but neither of them could get into the academy. They had decent grades, but not straight A's, and they never got into any trouble. They're both working as security guards now.

[–]KazROFL 0 points1 point ago

Depends on what you can get, big cities with a large population to pool from? Yeah expect pretty competitive hiring requirements.

[–]Zoids 1 point2 points ago

In Ontario, you need at least a college education then when a police service hires you, they send to the OPC and to graduate I think you need to get at least 80's so maybe B+ to A-.

Edit: fixed some things. Sorry

[–]levitron 0 points1 point ago

The OPP doesn't require a post-secondary education, but they will point out that every edge that you can gain against other applicants will help your application.

[–]Zoids 0 points1 point ago

Well you are technically correct, but you still need to attend OPC for a few weeks then they transfer you to the OPP headquarters in Orillia for a few weeks before you can graduate from OPC. Also, I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard that you could go to OPC without having been hired by a police service.

So, you are correct, but you could also point out that the Ontario Police College is technically a post-secondary education.

[–]judgemebymyusername 0 points1 point ago

There are some reports that some US police agencies have turned down officers for being too smart.

[–]Draculix 56 points57 points ago

For someone who's extremely educated, that's a fucking stupid thing to say.

[–]raging_asshole 70 points71 points ago

Don't know if you ever saw the show, but the cop is Sarah's sister's boyfriend. Can't remember if she already knows that when she says this line, though.

But also, the version of herself that she played was pretty fucking stupid.

[–]fujbuj 20 points21 points ago

He always plays a cop, too. In Arrested Development, Community. I always hoped it was the same cop.

[–]Idontbelieveinthesun 6 points7 points ago

He was also the ranger in the hunting trip episode on Parks and Recreation.

I like to imagine his overzealousness as a cop in California (i.e. always being eager to deliver the truncheon blow on already submissive perps) eventually got him fired, so he moved to Indiana and got work as a ranger. He got in trouble for his sexism and went back to being a cop, this time in Greendale, Colorado, where he has to deal with community college students who think they're cops. Then he moves back to California and is insulted by Sarah Silverman.

[–]somesthetic 3 points4 points ago

Jay Johnston.

I remember him as far back as Mr. Show, but yes, he is a cop a lot.

[–]floatablepie 1 point2 points ago

"He wasn't a cop in Arrested Development, that cop didn't have a mus-- oh."

[–]sojik 5 points6 points ago

It's the first episode and his first line.

[–]mostlikelyatwork 0 points1 point ago

He actually arrests her after this and when Laura comes to get her at the police station they meet and Jay asks her out.

Also at this point in the season Jay's mustache is fake and the police station is actually a police museum. /DVD commentary

[–]Muntberg -1 points0 points ago

Regardless, reddit isn't upvoting it because they like the show, it's being upvoted because of the massive obsession everyone here has with cop hate.

[–]deja-vu-comment 43 points44 points ago

I would ram Sarah so hard.... That is all. I'm out.

.

[–]sleepy_wall 6 points7 points ago

wow that happened. I didn't think I'd get to see her naked but I did. I say that about a lot of people though.

[–]BigRedDSP 0 points1 point ago

You get to see a lot of people naked that you didn't think you would? Are you bad at guessing which actresses will do nude scenes or really good at being a Peeping Tom?

[–]sleepy_wall 2 points3 points ago

Major in bad at guessing and a minor in walking in on people on accident.

[–]BigRedDSP 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to hear funny stories involving you earning that minor.

[–]MeltedTwix 1 point2 points ago

I imagined you just checked off a section of a checklist and grinned to yourself.

I had a sex dream about her once. She had a penis which was awesome because that's what I'm into but it was really small and creepy.

[–]chrom_ed 19 points20 points ago

Are you uncomfortably open about this sort of thing in person as well?

[–]luckyratfoot 5 points6 points ago

When it comes up, yes.

[–]sandman369 5 points6 points ago

"Hey luckyratfoot, did you have a good weekend?"

"Yeah man, I caught up on some gaming, finally cleaned my apartment, and had this awesome sex dream about Sarah Silverman with a small creepy penis. 9/10 weekend!"

Aren't good grades required to become an officer?

[–]ObesesPieces 15 points16 points ago

Not where I am from. Kid at my high school barely graduated, brought weapons to school, and was a complete degenerate. He's now a cop because daddy was a cop.

[–]RothKyle 1 point2 points ago

Yikes.

[–]timesnewspartan 3 points4 points ago

We have a cop where I'm from whose favorite memory in the high school yearbook was being hit in the head by a 2x4. What I'm trying to say is "No".

[–]OruTaki 0 points1 point ago

Depends on the level of copitude you want to be. State patrol / Highway cops need amazing grades. Sheriff departments or city level, especially in the shit hole parts of said state do not have such requirements.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]fucktales 10 points11 points ago

That depends on the city. Plenty of police departments take recruits with just a GED.

[–]cderry 0 points1 point ago

I approve of the username. (way-ooo)

[–]stilesja 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, a loan officer.

[–]imakushyou 2 points3 points ago

This might be the worst repost I've ever seen

[–]Cheddar_Soup 3 points4 points ago

Actually getting a job as a cop is very competitive. My sister in law applied with 550 people for 12 jobs a while back and got it. A guy with all C's would not stand out among a lot of applicants.

[–]cocoria 9 points10 points ago

Depend entirely on where you live. In my rural hometown, my friend with mediocre grades went on to a police position when no 4 year school would accept him. The position had been left open for 18 months with no applicants when he applied.

I doubt a highschool dropout could land a position, and most departments require a 2 year degree, but to pretend that you need to be an academy hotshot to get a badge is only true in a few high population, affluent areas.

[–]nearlynagol 0 points1 point ago

You need to be a high school graduate or have a GED to become a police officer in the U.S. so you're right to doubt it.

[–]Easih 0 points1 point ago

same here in in Quebec,Canada(maybe different in very rural town).

[–]hooizyoo -2 points-1 points ago

Sarah Silverman is ridiculously overrated. I can't believe they keep giving her tv shows.

[–]pittsnoggle 2 points3 points ago

Do you know why I'm standing here?

I think he meant to say "Do you know why I stopped you?" like a normal cop, but that doesn't set up "hilarious burns" as well.

[–]McNooberson 1 point2 points ago

"Do you know why I stopped you" is not part of the seven step approach (I can at least definitely say this is for Texas). That is typically a line for the media industry, as well as "license and registration." Here was ask for license and proof of insurance.

Also some officers will deviate from this seven step approach to traffic stops and that can sometimes get them in trouble. This approach is why some officers may seem very dry or curt you with you

[–]GWARgasm 1 point2 points ago

High school grades don't impact someone becoming a police officer.

[–]Nebakanezzer 0 points1 point ago

she was implying there's not much else he could do that would pay equally.

[–]GWARgasm -1 points0 points ago

There's people at my work who spend all day sitting on their ass and making a few updates to a product in development that make higher salaries than most cops. It's sad.

[–]outtsider 1 point2 points ago

I think that's why this is funny.

[–]olinneserpona -1 points0 points ago

What's wrong with C? Upper half of the score table? Or is it just A B C D and F?(no E) My school had 1 2 3 4 5 and 6. C=4 and 4 isn't that bad bad. "above average"

[–]crash331 4 points5 points ago

Cs are pretty shitty grades. You have to be either not interested in school or below average to get a C. Average is usually mid Bs with Cs every now and again on hard stuff.

Cs will see you either not going to college or going to a technical school.

Here in Canada, being an RCMP (cop) is a very prestigious thing.

[–]Jestrick 0 points1 point ago

Around here the job market is so competitive you have to have a college degree just to get into the academy.

Just saying....

He just got burned so bad he'll need an anabolic steroid!

[–]dlan4327 -1 points0 points ago

In Aus that may get you a laugh, in the UK maybe a ticket, in the US? Probably a beating.

[–]mama_llama 16 points17 points ago

SO BRAVE

LE MURICA IS POLICE STATE AMIRITE GUYS

[–]throwingnickels -5 points-4 points ago

Not overly proud of this, but I've said something close to this once while obscenely drunk. I can confirm that indeed you do get beat the fuck down.

[–]jack_johnson1 -2 points-1 points ago

I have to downvote this.

Police jobs are very competitive, are secure if you are competent, are paid well and have good benefits (plus you can get oodles of overtime).

Many times the police are paid more than the city lawyers.

[–]PissFuckinDrunk -4 points-3 points ago

I can confirm this, good friend is a cop. His base rate is just shy of $150k and his overtime rate is a little over $100 an hour. Since overtime is plentiful, and usually easy (read: sitting in a cop car doing traffic), he's not exactly hurting for money.

[–]EvrythingISayIsRight 11 points12 points ago

150k

a cop

dont bullshit me

[–]crash331 4 points5 points ago

That's a little ridiculous.

[–]NavyDavie 2 points3 points ago

No. No it's not.

[–]MastaZama -1 points0 points ago

haha i love sarah silverman!

[–]KidneyFailure -5 points-4 points ago

Why do people still upvote reposts? I'm very confused

[–]mxt920 11 points12 points ago

Just 'cause you've seen it before doesn't mean everyone has.

[–]senzu_bean_soup -1 points0 points ago

I would do horrible things to sarah silverman

[–]Solid_Snack 0 points1 point ago

The Sarah Silverman Program, Comedy Central I think. It's on Netflix too.

While we're all here, has anyone read her book "The Bedwetter"? I was gonna pick it up.

[–]LionSlicer 3 points4 points ago

I got it on a promo sale when it came out. Its really only an ok book. she has some good stories and its funny but its also very unorganized and a little boring. the most interesting parts are from when she was working on SNL.

[–]Solid_Snack 2 points3 points ago

Thanks, I've been seeing pretty mixed reviews. Might give it a miss for the moment.

[–]LionSlicer 1 point2 points ago

I honestly wouldn't spend the time on it.

[–]Atario -2 points-1 points ago

We're gonna need the burn unit on this, stat

[–]Kanskekanske -1 points0 points ago

In Sweden, all cops are A,B students :D

UPSWEDEN

[–]RustBrotherOne 0 points1 point ago

I've been debating joining the police force for a while now... and I had all c's in school... does this mean I'm guaranteed a position?

[–]McNooberson 5 points6 points ago

I'm graduating from college with a CJ major next May and I currently have a 3.7 GPA. I am hoping I get selected, it is pretty competitive.

[–]Chef_Goldblum 1 point2 points ago

Good luck, finish strong! Take a look at usajobs.gov to find a LOT of criminal investigator jobs with almost any federal agency.

[–]RustBrotherOne 1 point2 points ago

goodluck man! 3.7 isn't a bad GPA... right? I have to admit, I am total shit when it comes to grades... so I have no clue. But still, dude, goodluck!

[–]McNooberson 1 point2 points ago

Thanks, and no it isn't bad, a 4.0 is the highest. From what I have been told by the departments I am applying to, there are approximately 200 that apply initially. Through the process of elimination including various physical and intelligence tests, interviews, and lie detectors the people have been trimmed down to around 3. One of the PD that I am applying for is looking for 2 positions, so you can imagine how stressed I feel haha.

[–]RustBrotherOne 1 point2 points ago

You have a two in two hundred chance, that's some sharp odds, but still they're better than a one in two hundred chance. I think you just might have what is needed, McNooberson. You just might have it.

me on the other hand, I failed at the mention of "physical and intelligence tests" for I am neither smart nor well built. A shame, but for the best perhaps.

[–]McNooberson 1 point2 points ago

Thank you very much, that means a lot. Not many people agree with my career choice, especially here on the hive mind.

Also, just because you may (or may not) be fit to be a police officer, does not mean that you aren't meant for something else. That something else could very well be something greater than what I plan on doing. Don't give up on what you want!

[–]feanturi 0 points1 point ago

All Cs could just be a lack of drive at the time. What they really aim for is IQ. So get your IQ tested. Make sure you go into the test impaired in some way because if you score too high they won't take you.

[–]McNooberson 0 points1 point ago

That is completely false. I know officers who have masters degrees just going into policing. They start low and rank up.

[–]feanturi 0 points1 point ago

Sorry for joking in /r/funny, I don't know what I was thinking.

[–]McNooberson 0 points1 point ago

I was not aware of the fact you were joking, sorry. Another person in the comments above believes what you said to be true and I thought that you believed this as well.

Again, sorry
