I can hear that damn awkward ostrich laughing.

[–]bookwyrmpoet 14 points15 points ago

Here you can for real. just ah... don't click it several times really fast... trust me on that one.

[–]dryicequeen 9 points10 points ago

That poor wolf.

[–]anothermonth 5 points6 points ago

That's okay, it has less seeds than that watermelon.

[–]dryicequeen 5 points6 points ago

Yes, but it has no nutritional value.

[–]BowsNToes21 3 points4 points ago

That food is way to rich for him.

[–]cousinroman 3 points4 points ago

Zing!

[–]enjoysuon 2 points3 points ago

PHOTOSHOP POWERRRRR !!

[–]EmergencyMedical 1 point2 points ago

Ugh, so can I. That episode was on last night.

[–]mattcutt 5 points6 points ago

Yeah that's what I was wondering... I think he only managed to steal one half, coming back for the other one :)

[–]SilentWolfjh 1 point2 points ago

Yep, burp, I fucking LOVE watermelon ... saving the other half for tomorrow.

[–]dangoodspeed 29 points30 points ago

It's the rare watermelon wolf. Known for its lower jaw's resemblance to a watermelon.

[–]ookamiko 31 points32 points ago

I recognize that wolf! His name is Bono and he resides at Wolf Haven in Tenino, Wa. Occasionally we present them a treat in addition to their normal diet. Here's a photo of another of our wolves, London, also noming some watermelon: http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/399100_430035927044562_1778001236_n.jpg

[–]trexrawrrawr 2 points3 points ago

how friendly are they?

like can you pet them? is there ever that worry that they will just attack?

[–]fresh1134206 3 points4 points ago

Not who you directed the question to, but I have two wolves.

They are extremely friendly.

You are welcome to come over and pet them any time.

It is really fun to wrestle with them. They start growling and baring teeth, generally looking scary. But, no. There never is any worry of them "just" attacking. Unless by attack you mean licking your face off. Then you should be very afraid.

[–]trexrawrrawr 1 point2 points ago

then what exactly is keeping people from just getting pet wolves?

i mean....technically a dogs are just breeds of tamed wolves

why dont we see more people having full blooded wolves as pets?

dont they still have that "wild animal" aspect that dogs dont have that could make them dangerous?

[–]fresh1134206 5 points6 points ago

why dont we see more people having full blooded wolves as pets?

Because they are pretty different. You can't just leave a wolf inside your house all day while you're at work. A chihuahua, sure. Wolves need room to run and play. They need more training than the average dog. Many people don't have the time or space required to own them.

dont they still have that "wild animal" aspect that dogs dont have that could make them dangerous?

I suppose this could be debatable on a wolf to wolf basis, but my wolves show absolutely no indication of this. Case in point, we have 20 chickens and 2 turkeys that free range. The wolves have never once attacked the birds. In fact, they not only share their food with the birds, but often times we find them sleeping, cuddled up to the birds. They cuddle with our cats as well.

The most dangerous thing you have to worry about with my wolves, is them loving you to death.

[–]ookamiko 9 points10 points ago

So many very good questions! I'll try to answer as many as I can.

At Wolf Haven we have over 50 wolves, the majority of them are gray wolves and we have a few Red Wolves as well. Some of them are rescues taken in from a range of places while others are part of reintroduction programs taking place like the Red Wolf reintroduction program in the South Western US. Bono, the wolf in the OP(Photo by Erik Wilber), is a wolf-Dog hybrid while London (the wolf in the photo I posted) is pure Gray Wolf.

Here is a link to our list of wolves we have at our sanctuary as well as each one's individual profile and how they came to us: http://www.wolfhaven.org/our_wolves/index.php

Their temperaments, just like with humans, can very greatly with each individual wolf. Wolves themselves actually tend to shy away from people by nature. We only have about 16 wolves that can be seen on our tour while the rest are kept in other enclosures out of view of the public and away from the tour route. Aside from feeding or medical care, some of the wolves do not interact with humans at all. This is because many of the wolves have such different degrees of human interaction. Some, however, are quite sociable and tolerate humans fairly well.

Here is a more in depth FAQ we offer regarding the care of the wolves at Wolf Haven, for any who may be interested: http://www.wolfhaven.org/FAQs.php

Many of the wolves we have at our facility come from road side attractions, zoos or from private owners who thought that owning a wolf or wolf-dog would be similar to owning a domestic dog breed. While some of these wolf-dogs can be very people friendly, others may retain more of their wolf traits and what you could end up with is a Wolf that has lost it's fear of people. A strong and determined animal can have devastating and potentially unforeseen side effects.

Wolves also have an instinct to dig--DEEP holes. We have been contacted by parties who have discovered too late that their puppy has now grown into a very large and demanding adult they no longer are able to care for. They are also very intelligent and excellent escape artists so many people simply do not have the proper facilities to accommodate these animals.

Nearly all of our wolves, aside from any that are on loan for special reintroduction programs, live out the rest of their lives at Wolf Haven. Those in Reintroduction programs are treated as wild and not given the same enrichment as some of the other wolves, as not to promote or foster any instances predator/human conflict when they are released back into the wild.

Wolves can have some pretty awesome and unique personalities. The bottom line, however, because of the unpredictable nature of the animals, they are not great pets. The major difference between owning a wolf and today's domestic dogs are defined by the centuries of breeding for favorable traits in the dog that has essentially changed the animal almost entirely.

For anyone interested in knowing more about how the evolution of wolves into the domestic dog was possible, I'd recommend looking into the study done by Russian scientist Dmitri Belyaev on the domestication of the Silver Fox. What they discovered is that over time, by selecting certain foxes based on behavior and temperament they not only changed the behavior of the fox, but their appearance began to change as well. Not only that but the chirp sounds commonly associated with the wild fox began to adopt more dog-like characteristics. At the same time they bred foxes with the undesirable traits and found that those foxes didn't change physically, but they did lose their fear of humans.

Sorry for the long winded answer, but I hope that may have helped answer some questions. :)

[–]Still_ill 1 point2 points ago

Very Informative. I saw the silver fox domestication as part of dogs decoded. I would love to own a wolf, or wolf hybrid really. but i know they need to run free <3

[–]dactyif 0 points1 point ago

Woa that's Bad ass looking wolf. is he called London because of the author?

[–]KittenyStringTheory 1 point2 points ago

Now we know why your name means baby wolf!

Or you just really like cell-shaded video games.

That name... i love your dubstep

[–]defaultconstructor 18 points19 points ago

I've never played Borderlands(I am a terrble person), but even I think it'a a Borderlands reference.

[–]LonelyRasta 16 points17 points ago

If you stand next to the guy long enough, he beat box some dubstep .. Pretty funny voice acting.

[–]defaultconstructor 11 points12 points ago

From what I've heard, Borderlands was/is pretty awesome with the voice acting, and just awesome in general. With all the borderlands talk on reddit, i might just have to jump on the bandwagon :)

[–]KingNick 6 points7 points ago

The voice acting for both Tiny Tina and Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2 is absolutely amazing

[–]Damn-it-man 2 points3 points ago

While we're on the subject of voice acting, how about in Skyrim! The Court Wizard of Whiterun had the WORST voice acting I've ever heard! It's all monotone and flat sounding, it's just terrible all around.

[–]theMagicalCouch 8 points9 points ago

You expected good voice acting from Bethesda? Did you also expect a perfect game free of bugs from them?

[–]Acoustyk 1 point2 points ago

Is that the guy who sounds like he's from New Jersey?

[–]Delicious_Nipples 1 point2 points ago

Tiny Tina is voiced by Ashley Burch from "Hey Ash Whatcha Playin?" her older brother anthony also wrote the entire main story for borderlands 2.

[–]bookwyrmpoet 1 point2 points ago

DOOO IT, though wait for steam winter sale, pick up the first game with all the expansions for 10 bucks, maybe less if you get lucky. And play it all before you get to Borderlands 2, it really adds some punch to the story.

[–]ademnus 0 points1 point ago

jump, jump, is a ton of fun -especially with friends in co-op

[–]TheInexorableTruth 8 points9 points ago

Equally cute is using "nom" to refer to a ferocious predator munching on some fruit.

[–]xrelaht 61 points62 points ago

Don't see nearly enough wolves in /r/aww.

[–]Damn-it-man 15 points16 points ago

I agree. MORE WOLVES PLEASE!

[–]InternationalFuck 30 points31 points ago

[–]fresh1134206 7 points8 points ago

Okay.

Here is my wolf Cody as a baby.

And here she is all grown up.

[–]grumpyswife 1 point2 points ago

Here's a black one who lives at Tiger World in NC.

[–]blueboxbandit 16 points17 points ago

Those bubbles probably tickle on his nose

[–]Nansai 8 points9 points ago

So cute!

[–]hurdur1 7 points8 points ago

Coming home with a fresh carcass for its young.

[–]gneithamer1 8 points9 points ago

Who cut it for him?

[–]mtheory007 15 points16 points ago

Oh sweet Jesus! The wolves have learned how use knives!!

[–]shankems2000 4 points5 points ago

Well they already know how to fist fight with Liam Neeson so this was the logical next step in their evolution.

[–]mtheory007 0 points1 point ago

I smell a sequel.

[–]flavorburst 8 points9 points ago

he probably got scammed into buying a set of cutco knives

[–]magelanz 3 points4 points ago

Most likely this is at a zoo or animal preserve. The NC zoo used to give their arctic foxes pumpkins in the fall. They look so cute trying to chew around the rind!

[–]Cayterri 3 points4 points ago

Looks like Wolf Haven in WA State. They just put a bunch of pics up of their charges nomming watermelons on their Facebook.

[–]Phoequinox 7 points8 points ago

The lesser-known sibling, Mellow Wolf.

[–]Ansalem 60 points61 points ago

He's really wolfing it down.

[–]Somethin_nice_for_ya 33 points34 points ago

Howl he finish it all?

[–]cousinroman 83 points84 points ago

[–]Nightwing11 5 points6 points ago

Im ending this before it gets a chance to begin

[–]TheBB 24 points25 points ago

Looks like they just commented around you.

[–]waggle238 5 points6 points ago

His efforts didnt even make them paws before they started it right back up

[–]PlantedChaos 5 points6 points ago

My two favorite things!

[–]Mrcheez211[!] -1 points0 points ago

Try to pet one and see if your opinion changes

[–]waggle238 18 points19 points ago

I've been petting a watermelon for 5 minutes now and I feel the same, what am I doing wrong?

[–]fresh1134206 0 points1 point ago

Petting one right now. My opinion remains unchanged.

[–]jakesnake08 8 points9 points ago

TIL: Wolves like watermelon

racist paraphernalia

I think I've just discovered the name of my country rock band!

[–]joemangle 24 points25 points ago

I always dreamed of starting a country rock band called "Slight Yokel and the Doggy Styles"

[–]shanoxilt 5 points6 points ago

[–]Gelsamel 23 points24 points ago

Why can't I hold all these racisms?

[–]conspiracy_thug 3 points4 points ago

i dont get why im getting heat for this. im on the non-racist side. =[

[–]Dat_Black_Guy 6 points7 points ago

as hell....

[–]conspiracy_thug 0 points1 point ago

and you would know!

[–]didyuokno 4 points5 points ago

The first recorded watermelon harvest occurred nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt.

[–]shpong1ed 23 points24 points ago

Worst racist joke ever. Who doesn't love a good watermelon?

Not only black people like melons. I've only seen this on the internet.

[–]tiffums 12 points13 points ago

I've only seen this on the internet.

Lucky you. It's a stereotype with deep deep roots in the American south.

[–]puugwei 4 points5 points ago

It's a stereotype with deep deep roots in racism and justifications of slavery -- http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2012/02/27/slavery-and-the-watermelon/

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points ago

Then count yourself lucky. Many of us have seen this in real life. You might be surprised to know this stereotype predates the Internet by quite a bit.

[–]dryicequeen 6 points7 points ago

I'm from the south and can confirm this. Many years ago my friends and I were talking about black stereotypes. While in the midst of the conversation a friend takes out his Chapstick and starts using it. I really like the smell and asked him what flavor that was. He looks at the label and bursts out laughing. It was watermelon and he is a black man.

[–]_mach 1 point2 points ago

"Quite a bit" == minstrel show times, right?

[–]Happy_Harry 1 point2 points ago

Or a Bad Wolf.

[–]GalantZ 5 points6 points ago

Let it go Rose.

he likes it

[–]OcifferWiggles 4 points5 points ago

"No, I haven't seen your watermelon. This one is mine."

[–]Bettet 3 points4 points ago

How come in almost every picture of a wolf, its looking into the camera..

[–]pyalot 8 points9 points ago

[–]Dinopleasureaus 3 points4 points ago

They are staring into your soul.

[–]niko2000 7 points8 points ago

He's wolfing it down. I'll let myself out....

[–]amlaviol 6 points7 points ago

You really had to call it nomming, didn't you? :/

[–]hanstalhoffer 13 points14 points ago

My dog eats watermelon!! I always thought it was pretty weird, but I guess she's not alone!

[–]boringdude00 13 points14 points ago

All the dogs I've ever had loved watermelon. In fact they liked pretty much all fruit, even crazy stuff like papaya, pineapple, and mango. Couldn't ever get one to eat a veggie though unless it was cooked with chicken or a roast or smothered in gravy.

[–]IFUCKINGLOVETIGERS 7 points8 points ago

My Golden Retriever will eat vegetables but he refuses to eat watermelon. Unrelated but, He is like 13 now, I don't think he has a lot of time left. :'(

[–]Teslanaut 14 points15 points ago

Get a tiger next.

[–]Bobozaur 2 points3 points ago

Carrots man. My cocker spaniel got always crazy when he smelled carrots.

[–]kolr 2 points3 points ago

I'm sorry buddy :( our Great Dane is 5 and a half years old. When you realize they rarely live past 8-9 and we got her from a rescue at 4 years old, it's just not enough time with her. At least we added to the pile of good things in her life. Cherish the 13 and change you got from your pal. Our Great Dane loves apples, asparagus, blueberries, cucumber, and watermelon (also in a semi-related note, she also really loves duck feet... Not doing that one again though...).

[–]dryicequeen 2 points3 points ago

Now I am tearing. We have a 4 year old Mastiff/Dane who is amazing and I hate that his life is almost halfway over.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]dryicequeen 2 points3 points ago

That's wonderful to know! We have another large dog and they run around our backyard playing. Before him I had a 12 year old German Shepard who passed in 2010. I was with him when we had to put him down due to severe hip dysplasia. Our vet injected him and he just layed his head in my lap but refused to go. She came back at gave him a stronger medication and he still refused to go. I told him it was ok and he didn't have to protect me anymore. He closed his eyes and passed away.

[–]IFUCKINGLOVETIGERS 0 points1 point ago

I'm somewhat worried about my other dog also. He is a 1 and a half year old beagle mix, his name is Shadow (He is mainly black). Super cute. If I let the Golden Retriever (Jake) out, he waits for Shadow. If Shadow can't see Jake when outside he just starts crying. He's a very needy dog. But quite adorable.

[–]waggle238 1 point2 points ago

dont worry, a lot of animals get more and more racist as they grow older, does he also fall asleep watching FOX news?

[–]bbbobertson 3 points4 points ago

My dogs go crazy for Watermelon AND Carrots.
The key is let them think they can't have it, then they want it.
Now my dogs think carrots are treats.

[–]hanstalhoffer 0 points1 point ago

I've yet to see her try and eat any other fruit, she really doesn't like cantaloupe.

[–]Gourmay 5 points6 points ago

Big Cat Rescue did a really cute video recently of tigers, pumas etc. eating/playing with some watermelons :)

which I meant to link... and didn't: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8edVU2eo3AY

[–]indiejohnny 2 points3 points ago

I was expecting to see a picture of your dog eating some watermelon.

[–]hanstalhoffer 0 points1 point ago

Unfortunately I've never thought to take a picture of it! I don't live at home any more and she does so when I visit next time I'll try to take a picture!

[–]CrackerJack23 1 point2 points ago

I love white shepherds. If that's not what he is I'm sorry but that's what I saw.

[–]hanstalhoffer 0 points1 point ago

She is, her name is Angel. She'll be 14 in Oct.

[–]craybutton 3 points4 points ago

seeing this makes me want to hug the next wolf i see in real life. and offer it some sort of fruit salad.

[–]hubris105 1 point2 points ago

Let us know how that goes once you get out of the hospital.

[–]Carolus_Rex 6 points7 points ago

DM;HW

[–]fresh1134206 1 point2 points ago

Just hugged two wolves. Was not injured, did not go to hospital. Your move.

[–]craybutton 2 points3 points ago

and i just had a fruit salad!

[–]Tranger 3 points4 points ago

My grandpa used to tell us stories of how coyotes are real asshole, as they had the habit of smashing the crops, specially pumpkins and watermelons, to just nom a few bits and leave a mess of inedible vegies and fruits. So yeah this tale is kinda of unrelated...

[–]Sarkosity 3 points4 points ago

[–]Jake_91_420 23 points24 points ago

God I hate the word 'nomming'.

[–]labrys 3 points4 points ago

how do you feel about om-nom-nom?

[–]Vayre 11 points12 points ago

nomming

[–]SomeDudeinAK 0 points1 point ago

Hmmm... I'd have to say Cannus Domesticus.

Gawd, but I do love these rascals. I'm so glad they sought out our campfires all those years ago.

Some say we sought them out...

[–]waggle238 0 points1 point ago

You were close, but it actually belongs to the Cetacea Delphinidae family, you can tell by the tail

[–]Arschengel 2 points3 points ago

[–]Mclongkok 0 points1 point ago

It's not as cute when you realize that watermelon was the lone survivor of a watermelon plane crash in Alaska, only to be eaten by a wolf.

[–]nittyit 0 points1 point ago

[–]droivod 1 point2 points ago

Here wolfie wolfie....

[–]DarknessFallsOverUs 3 points4 points ago

It feels as though someone replaced a rabbit or something else with the watermelon.

Edit: Nevermind, it's real.

[–]thegr8dv8 3 points4 points ago

[–]BioluminescentBoy 7 points8 points ago

Doesn't sound unreasonable. They're only targeting livestock killing wolves in response to cattle deaths after non-lethal deterrents failed while still enforcing conservation elsewise.

[–]thegr8dv8 1 point2 points ago

Not quite-main cause of problem is one rancher who won't cooperate with local conservation officials. Other ranchers have not had problems with the pack and are pissed that their efforts were in Cain due to one piece of shit.

[–]im12whatisthis 0 points1 point ago

I do love becoming enraged only minutes before I need to go to sleep...

I truly hate some humans.

[–]piasenigma 3 points4 points ago

That aint shit, scott walker signed a bill in wisconsin to allow wolf hunting, there is only a few hundred wolves living in the wild in our state.

[–]whywasthisupvoted 2 points3 points ago

wat

[–]Still_ill 0 points1 point ago

:( & in denali park in Alaska the request to restore a ban against hunting and trapping wolves just around the park (a wolf-protection zone) was rejected.

[–]ThatGhost 0 points1 point ago

What the HELL is nomming???

[–]erreip_arevir 3 points4 points ago

Eating.

[–]Tapakidney 1 point2 points ago

Looks more to me like a wolf looking at you and reconsidering his choice of eating a watermelon.

[–]Fluffy_Panda1729 1 point2 points ago

Dem eyes.

[–]Big-Ern 0 points1 point ago

Hybrid no?

[–]cjhailey12 0 points1 point ago

This picture makes me want watermelon. Seriously, I wish I had a great big mouth like this wolf so I could take a great big bite of watermelon. It really looks good.

[–]JoshuW 0 points1 point ago

We had a watermelon patch on the farm where I grew up. Nothing ate more watermelon than coyotes, especially when the weather was dry. They wanted the hydrating "water-" more than the sweet "-melon". We eventually had to get a propane cannon to blast all night to keep them away.

We have a wolf park here in old Lafayette, Indiana and they have watermelons all the time for the wolves. They really love them. It's neat to see them go crazy when they see them.

This was posted 7 hours ago in /r/photoshopbattles. Not sure who was first, but it stands to reason that this is shooped. Also, a lot of the comments are the same.
