It is almost 100% certain that this was made in Korea. The 'b' icon on the side of the mug is from the Korean coffee store by the name of Caffe Bene. There is only one store in New York, three in China and 760 in Korea.

On a side note, Caffe Bene's success is partly due to the fact that it was used as a scene in a popular Korean drama (sorry I can't remember the name off hand). Personally, I think it is overpriced and the quality isn't that great.

Ironically, this is the type of place that Psy mocks in his hit song. Psy pokes fun at Dwenjang Girls (된장녀) or Soybean Paste Girls which are Korean women who spend very little money on a cup of ramen noodles for lunch and then spend a lot of money on a cup of coffee from a fashionable place in order to look 'chic' (or what ever).

I still don't know if the Koreans really get it that he's satirizing their cultural obsession of luxury and prestige.

Here's what I don't understand; are there people out there that just make this cappuccino art randomly and people buy it and are pleasantly surprised? That seems very unlikely, imagine spending like an extra 4-5 minutes each cup trying to make art out of the foam.

Or do people request this? It also seems unlikely that you could just pick a barrista and they would have the skills to make something like that.

Which brings me to the most likely scenario; the OP spends like 30 minutes at home making this or their friend makes it for them in private. Then they post it on reddit for karma and try to pass it off as some cool little neato thing that just happened.

I'm just going to go out on a limb and say that your friend didn't make the cappa, I'm going to say that whoever made the cappuccino was the one who took the photo, as it wouldn't make sense for the tamp to be in this photo. For those who don't know, before an espresso is made, the coffee grounds are tamped (pressed down) inside the coup that slots into the coffee machine and pours out coffee. So it makes no sense for him to be on the side that makes the coffee.
