Has anyone ever realized that Hercules is Ariel's second cousin?

[–]Jboyxz 16 points17 points ago

Proof?

[–]ryanoh 96 points97 points ago

Greek Mythology, bro.

EDIT:

Ariel's father is Triton. Triton's father is Poseidon. Poseidon's brother is Zeus. Zeus's son is Hercules. This makes them second cousins.

[–]Kon-chezz 21 points22 points ago

maeby.

[–]brumbrum21 2 points3 points ago

Kissing cousins

[–]thebrettw 6 points7 points ago

Les Cousins Dangereux

[–]cupids_hitman 6 points7 points ago

Huh. I always learned that as being a second cousin. TIL.

[–]satnightride 4 points5 points ago

Your second cousin is you mom's (or dad's) cousin's kid. Your first cousin once removed is your first cousin's kid.

[–]Fleudian 5 points6 points ago

As a Classical Studies Major, I can confirm that this is indeed the truth.

[–]treydestepheno 2 points3 points ago

so, can hercules and ariel bang?

[–]brumbrum21 7 points8 points ago

And how!

[–]ryanoh 2 points3 points ago

Seriously, how? She's a mermaid.

[–]brumbrum21 -2 points-1 points ago

Bootysex

[–]ryanoh 3 points4 points ago

Again, she's a mermaid.

[–]brumbrum21 -3 points-2 points ago

House of Mouse suggests Disney characters live in a shared universe in which they're just actors.

[–]AQiLd 11 points12 points ago

Upvote for House of Mouse!

[–]Chamere 3 points4 points ago

That was a great show to watch

[–]brumbrum21 4 points5 points ago

Like Mario Kart?

[–]Musickmann 58 points59 points ago

I think it's less a conspiracy theory and more a wink by the Disney animators to their other movies. Almost like a cameo.

[–]AQiLd 17 points18 points ago

Goofy is in Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin's Magic Carpet is in Princess and the Frog. Disney does this all the time.

[–]HSZombie 16 points17 points ago

The magic carpet, Belle, and Timon and Pumbaa are all in a sequence in The Hunchback of Notre Dame

[–]derpsty -1 points0 points ago

Magic Carpet also appears in The Princess and the Frog! In the beginning when there's a pan over New Orleans you can see a woman beating it over a balcony.

[–]sp4ce 2 points3 points ago

Walt Disney put his penis on a movie poster.

[–]OmegaX123 1 point2 points ago

If you're talking about the 'dong tower' in the Little Mermaid poster, that's false, if it really happened it was a disgruntled artist, and if it didn't (which doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't something that resembles a penis) then it was an accident in the production of the poster.

If, however, you're talking about something else, please elaborate (without pictures, if it's an obvious wang and not just a maybe wang).

People thought it looked enough like a dick to have the vhs cover banned. I've seen it it, and I'm no expert, but it looks like a dick. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/attachment.php?attachmentid=153999 check out the photo.

[–]leechsucka 7 points8 points ago

I think easter egg is a more appropriate term.

[–]Musickmann 1 point2 points ago

Thank you I couldn't think of the term at the time.

[–]NoisyCartographer 2 points3 points ago

And a simultaneous nod to one of the labors of Hercules, which was slaying of the Nemean. After doing so, Hercules wore its skin.

[–]treedick2011 0 points1 point ago

Disney reuses material all the time. They use the same scene in Bambi and the fox and the hound. IIRC.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

It reminds me of the Tommy Wesfall Universe theory. Where they charted cameos that existed across a lot of TV shows to "prove" they were in the same universe. A universe that all happens in the mind of an Autistic guy, because that's where the universe of the TV show ST Elsewhere takes place.

[–]Musickmann 0 points1 point ago

I remember seeing a chart of that. Mindfuck for sure.

[–]codithou 101 points102 points ago

It obviously takes place before since Scar is not actually a throw rug during The Lion King.

[–]Kraftik 11 points12 points ago

but how can we know that?

[–]Ghost141 3 points4 points ago

You can't explain that

[–]Kraftik 2 points3 points ago

or can we

[–]pHreaksYcle 2 points3 points ago

Trippy, yo. Simba was high as fuck the whole time!

[–]Kraftik 1 point2 points ago

Sooo amm I duddeeeee.

[–]Pointing_Out_Irony 1 point2 points ago

I feel like a lion carcass that's been torn to shreds by starving hyenas would make a crummy throw rug...

[–]Estragon_Rosencrantz 25 points26 points ago

Hercules' lion skin is from the Nemean lion, which he slayed as the first of his great labors. The lion's skin is impenetrable except by its own claws (which Hercules used to slay it), so thereafter Hercules used it as armor. Many depictions of Hercules show him wearing the lion's skin.

So since almost none of Scar's details line up with the Nemean lion, we can say that this theory doesn't fit.

[–]godfuckingdamnyouall 46 points47 points ago

Right, we can't change details about the lion when the rest of the movie follows the Hercules' mythology so accurately.

[–]Estragon_Rosencrantz 12 points13 points ago

Well not being killed by Hercules is kind of a big one.

[–]ATKDragon 5 points6 points ago

Despite all that, scars skin was still in hercules. Look at the gif.

[–]galactic27 6 points7 points ago

This is a really funny thing to have an argument about.

[–]ATKDragon -2 points-1 points ago

You're a funny thing to have an argument about.

[–]thebawsman360 2 points3 points ago

So, how's middle school going?

[–]Fleudian 8 points9 points ago

HOW'S YOUR MOM GOING SINCE LAST NIGHT???

[–]pHreaksYcle -1 points0 points ago

Slowly.

[–]Fleudian 0 points1 point ago

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA perfect. Even as a small child, I hated this movie because of how badly it butchered the Hercules Myth. Just ridiculous.

[–]OmegaX123 3 points4 points ago

It's called 'artistic liberties'. You're like one of those people who sees a video game movie, one that's a decent movie in its own right but not as a 'movie of the game', and says "DAMN that sucked, it got everything wrong! It was the worst movie ever!"

[–]crow1170 13 points14 points ago

It's perfectly reasonable to own more than one lion skin.

[–]LordHellsing11 11 points12 points ago

Except that the color scheme is the same and the rug has the same scar on his eye. It's Scar, and it's just an easter egg

[–]SovietSteve 7 points8 points ago

Is there anything in the Lion King that indicates what time period it takes place in? Genuine question.

[–]Fleudian 4 points5 points ago

Well, Zazu speaks with a British accent while they are all in the African savannah. This means it was probably the 19th to early 20th century. Which kind of blows holes in this theory.

[–]bums_you_out 2 points3 points ago

Well, in our DVD version of it, I think there's a bonus feature where Timon and Pumbaa drive a safari vehicle or something. So assuming this is canon, modern times.

Going purely from in the movie, Timon and Pumbaa do a Hawaiian style dance when trying to distract the hyenas, so we can assume some kind of exposure to Hawaiian culture which would also indicate a fairly modern (at least a hundred years or so) date range. However given their lack of modern astronomical knowledge (for instance, only Pumbaa has amodern concept of what stars are), it would indicate this is further back in time than that.

They have a weird mixture of modern and ancient knowledge , so it is really difficult to say the exact time period.

[–]ATKDragon 0 points1 point ago

You think it might have to do with the fact that they're animals?

[–]bums_you_out 0 points1 point ago

Well, they know a little bit about a culture thousands of miles away, you'd think they'd have a better grasp on other things too.

[–]Guineypigzrulz 5 points6 points ago

Wasn't Scar mauled to death by hyenas?

[–]sumojoe 9 points10 points ago

Nope, they have a party, go to Mexico and get drunk off tequila.

[–]darthelmo 5 points6 points ago

It's certainly implied quite strongly.

[–]crow1170 4 points5 points ago

What good fortune it'd be to stumble upon the hide of such a fine beast. The markets in Greece will pay finely for this!

[–]Buliwyf 0 points1 point ago

My assumption was always that they're all consumed by the fire.

[–]ElAvestruz 4 points5 points ago

"Zazu. . .!"

"Now just think. Whenever he gets dirty, you can take him out and beat him"

chuckle

[–]polynomials 5 points6 points ago

This made me realize that it's kind of a weird comment for Zazu to make. Like what if Joe Biden said to Obama, "We could always just skin Mitt Romney alive and use the skin as decoration." I feel like that would be weird.

[–]Strollingcat 3 points4 points ago

Don't most of the old Disney movies have a bit of another in them? I know the Little Mermaid has Donald and Goofy in it.

[–]redditlife13 0 points1 point ago

Where?

[–]Strollingcat 1 point2 points ago

Towards the beginning when King Triton rides in for that concert Ariel doesn't attend. They're in the crowd of mermaids. My god I have a lot of time on my hands.

[–]iamslm22 2 points3 points ago

Yea this is pretty old, it's very intentional

[–]godfuckingdamnyouall 6 points7 points ago

The first time I watched Hercules I noticed that the pelt looked just like Scar, but somehow I never figured that the two movies could take place in the same universe. Good job!

[–]Fenoe 0 points1 point ago

hmmm ive never seen hercules....maybe i should give it a go...

[–]falconear 0 points1 point ago

I remember an issue of MAD magazine from when I was a kid that very clearly showed that the entirety of The Lion King takes place in a Discount Lion Safari kind of park.

[–]rarityvia 1 point2 points ago

Whoever made that rug must have cleaned Scar up really well after they pulled him out of that lava pit.

[–]itisburgers 1 point2 points ago

Aladdin's Whole new world segment has them fly through the garden from Hercules' i won't say i'm in love segment.

[–]ZackZak30 0 points1 point ago

my childhood...

[–]AidanReddit -3 points-2 points ago

This must be more than coincidence.
