My family

Most of my family friends

Most of my other friends

About half the professors I know (my family is all in academia)

Most Christians I interact with

Every Muslim I know

Every Buddhist I know

Every deist I know

When I meet an intelligent, logical, interesting person who is fond of science, but later find out they are a closed minded athiest.

*atheist.

I think most atheists are of the agnostic variety and pretty open minded and simultaneously skeptical when it comes to theism. I guess I can only speak for myself, but I would love to see objective evidence in support of a deity. There isn't any at the moment though, so it is accurate to view someone who currently believes in a supernatural deity as irrational, at least when it comes to that one facet of their worldview. It is kind of a bummer when you meet someone who is otherwise awesome and then learn they have that one fundamentally irrational section of their personality, tbh.

I politely disagree. Believing in God does not have to be irrational. Radical views and foaming at the mouth over hateful beliefs in religion is irrational, but the belief in God is very human. We've been doing it for thousands upon thousands of years. Don't assume you and I are among the most enlightened humans to grace the earth because we don't believe.

I don't buy that humanity's historical proclivity towards the supernatural makes belief in deities any more rational. Also I'm looking at it in a modern context. Through most of our history up until recently maybe it was a reasonable belief to have given what limited collective knowledge was available, but I think we've progressed beyond that point. Sort of like how it would be irrational in modern times to profess a positive belief that the earth is flat, even though not so long ago it was reasonable to believe given the limited collective knowledge about such things.

What else besides theism would you say is rational to have a positive belief in absent any supporting evidence?

One day I will sleep with Natalie Portman.

[–]fuzzydunloblaw 0 points1 point ago

Well I don't know your personal situation, so maybe that is a rational belief and you're in a position to pull off such a feat. Good luck.

Why is it closed-minded to be disappointed that someone is religious? I thought all atheists want the world to move forward, away from religion.

Apparently you don't understand the point of my post. It was not to be rude to theists. I would never stop talking to someone because they are a theist. This gif was merely to show my disappointment, because I assume every extremely logical and intelligent person I meet does not follow a religion. (Because that's usually how it goes)

[–]Godfodder 0 points1 point ago

If they are logical and intelligent and they're someone you would want to hang out with or get to know better, their religious beliefs really shouldn't matter. Certainly not enough to bring disappointment. What you're saying is incredibly close-minded.

i agree believing in a higher power is okay, its fundamental religious individuals who are closed minded that get me, but that goes with some atheists too...

The percentage of my friends and family who are religious : 0%. Europe FTW.

Otherwise, I remember one instant of meeting someone like you describe, said she was catholic, and I was just surprised. It's just kind of a novelty here (France) to meet a young person in a scientific field who's Christian.
