From the Bulbapedia page:

It is said that if this flame goes out, the Pokémon dies, although this has never happened in the anime, manga, or video games.

The Pokédex entries section shows what each game has to say and not all of them mention it.

Personally, I like the idea of it showing the strength of the Pokémon but don't think they should be able to die.

Yes it can die from the flame going out. I watched all the TV shows when I was younger, ash's charmander almost died the day he met it due to the flame almost extinguishing from sadness and being out in the rain.

No. He let it go be with them, yes. But let him know he always has a place in ash's team.

He always comes when ash really needs him, or when he really needs ash.

Following the logic stated above, charmander is the child, in need of love and acceptance, charmeleon is the angsty teenager, rebellious but there for ash (more like ash is there for him, think "teenage who acts like they hate their parents but actually do love them), which makes charizard the adult, all grown up and going out on his own but knowing he always has a place to stay (ash).

Quite touching when you think about it.

As far as I know you're right. There's a reason for this:

Tajiri deliberately toned down violence in his games. In this vein, he had Pokémon faint rather than die after defeat, as he believed it was unhealthy for children to equate the concept of death with losing a game.

I have always thought that a series that grows up with its original fanbase would be a good idea, and Pokemon always comes to mind whenever I think of it.

You know how sometimes you grow out of series you loved as a kid (unless you're like me and continue watching the toons no matter how many people make fun of you) and lose interest when it starts getting butchered too much?

Just imagine learning your colors and shapes with Pokemon as a toddler, then it'd evolve into the Game Boy games you remember, then it'd keep going. 15 years later Pokemon is a toon series for young adults, and that's where they'd start introducing mature themes like death, and maybe make Team Rocket an actually competent group of sinister villains.

Then during your college years that's when it starts getting really raw, with Pokemon battles more like illegal dog fights and you start questioning the ethics of the whole thing. It's around that time that a Pokemon first-person shooter would come out. It'd be like Pokemon XD except instead of using shadow balls, you just murder the trainers who abuse their Pokemon to try and save them.

Sure you wouldn't be able to recruit new fans as easily, but those who are hooked would hopefully keep buying until they're old and grey and watching Pokemon versions of General Hospital.

I think the next step for the series should be a jump to 3D. Similar to what went on with Pokemon Stadium but toss in a 3D explorable open world that isn't restricted to the tile-based movement that is currently present. I would love to see a seamless transition between exploring and battling. PokeDex 3D is a step in the right direction, but its nothing more than a viewer with a very flat looking 3D.

We're definitely on the same wavelength there. After HeartGold and SoulSilver I swore off buying more Pokemon RPGs until one comes out that's actually in 3D, and the battles are superior to those in Pokemon Stadium/Colosseum. You know, like "Charmander tackle," then Charmander actually tackles Pidgey to the ground instead of twitching and dealing damage. Of course, another Red/Blue remake MIGHT be too much to hope for, but that won't stop me from dreaming.

The technology is there, but they'll probably save that idea for a big revival once Pokemon totally dies and the spin-offs stop selling. I love Mystery Dungeon and might even get into Conquest, but ugh, Ranger...

You should see the manga though. I started reading it like 2 months ago, and got to a part where an Arbok gets literally cut in half. The manga is completely different from the anime, and is a lot more mature and the characters actually grow instead of being frozen at the same age forever.

Things die in Pokemon... Are you familiar with the Pokemon Tower? It houses many deceased Pokemon, people mourning, and even has some really creepy music to go along with it....

Other then that, death only occurs in spinoffs like the Mystery Dungeon series and the Manga. (This first time you notice it as with Koga's Arbok...)

I don't think so. I think the flame is so powerful that it can burn in the water for a period of time. Look at the first episode that charmander is introduced and you can see it out in the rain. And then it wouldn't be in much trouble if it wasn't heart broken.

I can tolerate the flavour of the week/month as everyone's high on a new release, it will die off. A pokemon gif getting more than a thousand upvotes is a joke, it's empty content.

That's the way /r/gaming is now though, and this place has seemed to have managed to alienate a lot of people. I suppose 2 million subscribers will do that. You can't please everyone.
