Posted this below but what the heck:

While the side windows and back window of an automobile can be made with laminated glass, they are generally made with tempered glass. Rapid heating and cooling methods are used to manufacture tempered glass. In the event of an accident, or when the stability of the glass is compromised by being hit with an object, the tempered glass will not shatter. Instead, it breaks into tons of tiny pebble-like pieces. These pebble-like pieces are dull and do not cut like regular shattered glass.

Though to be fair some of the pieces you see flying off in the GIF look neither tiny nor pebble-like. And he may not be aware of the properties of laminated/tempered glass regardless.

Shatter in this sense means breaking like normal glass which has unpredictable and extremely sharp edges. For tempered glass it will break more uniformly without as much danger of slicing people up. And for laminated glass it will 'stick' to the PVB layer sandwiched between the glass layers, which is why front windshields usually spiderweb instead of shattering outright.

I'm not an expert in any of this so anyone else feel free to chime in.

I couldn't find pictures, but here's some pretty crazy info about it (emphasis mine):

Bill Goldberg: The first thing the doctors told me was that I got lucky. I slashed my arm up pretty good. I got 190 stitches, tore tendons and muscles all through it and came within a centimeter of tearing a nerve. If I had hit the nerve, I would have lost use of my arm. There wasn't really a prognosis given. They put me in a sling and for the longest time I couldn't move my wrist. I was out of the gym for three months. During that time, I didn't do anything. All my life, all I'd ever know was working out and being an athlete. Now I wasn't doing that. I fell into depression. God knows how long I was going to be out or was going to be like this. I had never taken three months off. I hung out around the house and basically did nothing.

I believe it took him a full year before he returned to wrestling.

Ha, all these questions have me finding more and more info about it. Apparently he almost had to have it amputated. Anyway, here you go:

A spot in the sequence called for Goldberg to pound on the windshield of the limousine with his hands. To ensure his safety, Goldberg had assistance from a piece of metal pipe and his hands were covered in black tape. However, Goldberg did not limit his pounding to the windshield and instead moved down the limousine breaking its windows. There were four windows on the side of the limousine and Goldberg broke the first two with his hands. He then got too aggressive, putting his forearm through the third window and immediately gashing it. Goldberg finished the sequence by pounding on the hood of the limo with his bloody arm, but immediately after it ended he was taken from the arena and rushed to a nearby hospital where the wound was patched. Goldberg lost a great amount of blood due to his accident and came within one centimeter of having to have the arm amputated.

yes exactly. for instance some asshat smashed my window to get to the absolutely nothing in my car. the next day upon discovering all the little pieces of glass, i was able to pick them up in a sheet formation, as they were mostly stuck together.

If you've seen any of the Prince Rupert's Drops videos that have been submitted recently, that is tempered glass. When a house window breaks, it largely stays whole and can have giant sharp edges.

They put the tempered glass in cars because in an accident it's better to have tons of little pebbles of glass than giant glass blades flying into you. Mythbusters did an episode about getting out of a car while it's underwater, and they showed miniature hammers you can buy that have a point on one end. They barely had to hit the glass, but that one fracture shattered the entire window and allowed them to escape.

I can confirm this from person experience. There are still a few tiny shards here and there, but you won't even notice them until you find them inside you a few weeks later.

that's very, very wrong, tempered glass is meant to break into much smaller pieces instead of shards yes, the logic behind that is, large shards can cut deep and do a ton of damage, the smaller chunks cannot, as for them being dull? utter bullshit, the small pieces are just as sharp on their edges as large shards would be, source: I cut the ever living fuck out of my hand when I was cleaning broken glass out of my truck after it got broken into

What it looks like he was trying to do was a front handspring over the car. In that trick you don't land on your head but plant your hands and push through your shoulders thus springing over the obstacle. It looks like he just didn't have the strength in his arms to hold his body up after jumping to that height. People do that all the time.

counterpoint: regular glass probably would not have broken. Safety glass is much more brittle and any structural failures are propagated through the entire piece. Regular glass would probably have required an impact with a lot smaller surface area, like a hammer or a golfball. Instead his weight would be distributed over the entire pane, not breaking it.
