Ahh...sand...blind corners...what more could a motorcyclist ask for?

[–]SubscribedToSayThis2003 Transalp 650 16 points17 points ago

Yeah, I frequently drive on mountain roads and theses tight corners are no fun as they force you to brake quite a lot and you can't even lean too much otherwise your peg can go beyond sliding and block the bike (even more so on a road like that with some nice potholes). The best remains driving those at night, wanna see where you're going ? Well, that's too bad.

[–]lagwagonlead2005 CBR600RR 5 points6 points ago

If my peg is touching the ground on a road like this, my tires have most likely already given up and I'm sliding across the road.

[–]SubscribedToSayThis2003 Transalp 650 0 points1 point ago

Oh yeah this one looks slippery as hell, was merely talking of my personal experience of these kind of inclined hairpin turns... on a clean road!

[–]mackengaHonda CB750F2 5 points6 points ago

I still wanna. The views would be awesome.

[–]DeadSeaGullsUT many bikes 2 points3 points ago

yeah, the grit and sand on the road would not make this any fun. i love tight hairpins when the roads are nice. This would just be slow moving unless you were willing to rally the bends.

[–]morwan'88 Honda Hawk GT 1 point2 points ago

rally the bends.

Dorifto?

[–]DeadSeaGullsUT many bikes 2 points3 points ago

haha. yeah. tokyo drift EVERYWHERE

[–]Hold_the_mustard 0 points1 point ago

if you can see the sand from the aerial shot, yikes.

[–]messedhobo 20 points21 points ago

Looks like theres a ton of gravel in those turns.

[–]RyanoRhinoK4 GSX-R 750 / 2009 KTM 250SX-F 17 points18 points ago

While it does look like a beautiful get away adventure ride, it doesn't look like a nice road to ride on. I'd rather smooth, sweeping corners on some high abrasion tarmac with some run off space or at least a barrier that to protect from falling off a cliff.

[–]neva5eez2k3 SV1000s 5 points6 points ago

High abrasion tarmac is like sex to my ears.

[–]RyanoRhinoK4 GSX-R 750 / 2009 KTM 250SX-F 5 points6 points ago

It's like sex to my tires! On that note, I can almost see wires so I better get a new set!

[–]wellscounty 1 point2 points ago

it didn't feel at all like sex on your ear did it .....no...ouch. Seriously though I laughed and upvoted your comment because it did sound good. I have had some good road rash and I can tell you that Tarmac is highly abrasive in all forms I have slid across.

[–]LossyRob 1 point2 points ago

I really enjoy sweeping corners as well, but I do love me some slalom riding.

[–]Drainbownick 1 point2 points ago

I'd same, but only with someone else's motorcycle.

[–]dsouzar 0 points1 point ago

So you mean a circuit? Haha I know what you mean though.

[–]neva5eez2k3 SV1000s 16 points17 points ago

Maybe if I was in a dune buggy.

[–]scx_tyler2011 DR200SE 7 points8 points ago

Or some sort of motorcycle that was designed for both street and off road use...

[–]ccccolegenrock'11 Husky SMR449 5 points6 points ago

like...two kinds of sports? they should call that a.....twosport.

[–]scx_tyler2011 DR200SE 4 points5 points ago

I think you might be onto something here... Like a dirt bike with all of the lights and signals and such for road use bolted on with some sort of hybrid rubber that work better than knobby tires on tarmac but handle dirt roads almost as well.

Ok, I've had enough. This is what I'm talking about.

[–]ccccolegenrock'11 Husky SMR449 3 points4 points ago

That's a sweet doublesport there, I like the watch, that's where I have mine, on my own bisport motorcycle.

[–]ccccolegenrock'11 Husky SMR449 1 point2 points ago

this is a picture of my own deucesport motorcycle. It's based on an endure onesport base, but comes with lights, 17" wheels and stiffer suspension. A fine multiplesport bike.

When I get to Switzerland, I'll be sure to proudly ride my ZweiSport on roads like those.

[–]mattbryce20001994 Suzuki Intruder VS1400 1 point2 points ago

We have some nice canyon roads here in Southern California where we like to ride those couplesport bikes. Good times...

[–]scx_tyler2011 DR200SE 0 points1 point ago

That's one really nice looking bike, I wish we had those over here. After a few runs on the highway I would love to upgrade to a bike in the area of 400cc. Although on some of the harder trails being able to pick my bike up has saved my ass more times than I can count, especially since I don't know any other rider with a di-sport so nobody to join me on the harsher trails :(

[–]ccccolegenrock'11 Husky SMR449 0 points1 point ago

It only weight 119kg dry, and it's nicely balanced and very easy to pick up!

[–]scx_tyler2011 DR200SE 0 points1 point ago

Like I said I wish they had those around here, my 200 weighs in at 126kg wet and it's less than half the engine size of your bike.

[–]ccccolegenrock'11 Husky SMR449 0 points1 point ago

Where are you? KTM 450 smr is probably the closest comparison.

[–]nyoro_n'97 Suzuki DR200SE 1 point2 points ago

My brother.

[–]scx_tyler2011 DR200SE 1 point2 points ago

Hey! Part of the Commonwealth as well I see :)

I knew I'd find another DR200 rider around here sooner or later. Have you done any modifications to yours? How many miles have you put on it (I've just hit the 1000km mark on mine) and have you found a good bag system for it yet, I hate having to use straps to tie down a duffel bag for longer trips and really limited cargo.

Also have any pictures?

Here and here are two shots with the bag on from my trip this weekend. I've only had it for just under a month but I LOVE it and currently live in two states of mind... "can't wait to ride it" and ":D I'm riding".

[–]nyoro_n'97 Suzuki DR200SE 0 points1 point ago

Mine is pretty much stock apart from me putting in a LED brake light (highly recommended, a lot brighter and less power hungry than a regular bulb) and a metal plate on the rear brake to make it easier to find. I've done about 2-3000 km on it since I got it in February but she has done nearly 40,000 in total and she kind of shows it. I pretty much use the same bag system as you, bungee cords and a duffel bag. I don't think anyone really makes suitable bags for dual sports :(

Something to watch out for on the DR200s: There is no castle headed bolt on the front sprocket like there is on the rear sprocket, it's just a regular screw-in bolt with no locking mechanism. It's a good idea to check the tightness every so often as part of your regular maintenance and when you replace the front sprocket, put some thread lock on it. I had a rather bad experience with mine.

Here she is before she was made roadworthy, missing the rear fairings and indicators and the side mirrors: http://i.imgur.com/u8P22.jpg

They really haven't changed much in 15 years.

[–]scx_tyler2011 DR200SE 0 points1 point ago

Aside from different paint it looks like its the exact same bike.

I will definitely check up on that front sprocket over the winter, thanks for the heads up. What was it like losing the front sprocket and where did it happen? Saw your post in the comments, I could imagine that happening to me on a trail 50km+ to the nearest anything. I haven't had any issues with the rear brake aside from almost ripping it off on the trail, since then I would not like it to be any bigger. I haven't been able to find anything that will fit my bike in terms of bags but a store a few cities over from me says they should have something but its at least a hour ride to get out there. I would love brighter lights as well, anything to be seen more clearly at night, I'd love to change over the turn signals as well but I might just leave it all stock if my insurance is low enough after upgrading my license next year I might upgrade to the DR-z400 for a bit more speed on the highway. Any other recommended maintenance aside from the obvious air/oil filters and oil, since I didn't get a owners manual with my bike.

[–]nyoro_n'97 Suzuki DR200SE 0 points1 point ago

[–]scx_tyler2011 DR200SE 0 points1 point ago

That's awesome, thanks!

I had actually looked it up on Google right after I mentioned not having it, thinking how stupid am I not just simply looking it up but it never came to mind. I would still like to get a hard copy sometime, gotta go back to the dealer and complain about it not having a manual with it since I was not told until I took delivery of the bike. To be fair it was used but only 900km on it when I bought it, a few ticks under 2000 now and I paid around half the price of what it cost new and I still have a warranty.

[–]carsismeZ06United States 8 points9 points ago

It looks like fun, but I never really understood roads like this. Like the Stelvio Pass. It's just a mass of hairpins. How fun can hairpins really be? I understand that there are stretches of fast kinks, but the best roads in my opinion are the country roads in the hills. Fast and flowing!

[–]TeledildonicER6-n 0 points1 point ago

Also less risk of skidding on the loose sand in the corners and tumbling down a mountain because the barrier is a curb.

[–]carsismeZ06United States 2 points3 points ago

It's a test of skill!

[–]bkm_br2004 Suzuki GN 125 9 points10 points ago

[–]IAmKramerTheRacist 9 points10 points ago

Dude that road is on fire, no way I would ride on that.

[–]JoseFernandes 1 point2 points ago

That's a pic of Capitão Nascimento riding on that road.

He rides a 50cc.

[–]djnathanv'06 DRZ-400SM 0 points1 point ago

I saw that in 13th Warrior. Didn't look like fun.

[–]cr0ftTriumph Rocket III 4 points5 points ago

I found out this summer that I really don't enjoy this type of serpentine, even without sand on the road. Not a huge fan of heights to begin with, and the slow creep up the side of a mountain just isn't fun driving.

Though I wouldn't mind being in a warm climate on a bike riding right now, it's getting chilly out.

[–]Corporal_Rodney 2 points3 points ago

That road sucks.

[–]mahade 2 points3 points ago

I really don't see the fun in this. Not even on a dirtbike. Unpredictable blind corners with sand and gravel in them. Constantly accelerating to an unimpressive speed and braking soon after, my hands would get sore by the 5th corner... if you're not going to crash you're going to get bored and annoyed.

Corners are fun on racetracks. Where it's safe. Where you don't die if you get off the road. Where there are no trees and poles and innocent people and cars and buses and trucks and children and pets and junk and trashcans etc etc etc. trying to kill you.

Corners in the real world should be clean, where you have enough vision to see through them 100%, where on both sides of the road there's beautiful rolling hills, soft grass to land in if shit happens and a complete lack of cars. Beautiful northern Ireland winding roads, a pub at the end, women that haven't seen a sober man in decades...

[–]djnathanv'06 DRZ-400SM 2 points3 points ago

That + supermoto = awesome. I'd love to run that road.

[–]maatismootBMW G650x challenge 2 points3 points ago

I am pretty sure that is Tizi n Tichka Pass in southern Morocco which I have ridden. It was actually one of the most unenjoyable rides of my life. That picture is missing the 5,000 tourist busses that go 10mph around those corners taking tourists between Marrakech and Ait Ben Haddou. Not to mention it is way up in the High Atlas Mountains so it was cold as shit.

[–]IMasturbateToMyself 1 point2 points ago

Haha I was one of those tourist! It was a great trip.

[–]GrapeApeonabike-S.E. MA- '99 R6 2 points3 points ago

Am I the only one that sees pictures like this and cringes?

edit: I commented before reading the comments...hooray I am not alone!

[–]mirage2k62011 Suzuki V-Strom 650 ABS 1 point2 points ago

I did some hairpins in India, which was amazing fun. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures, but I found one online that shows some of the hairpins:

http://www.valparai.com/valparai_photos/images/9thbend_jpg.jpg

Nothing better than dodging buses that go through these tuns at ungodly speeds!

[–]marcussantiagolurker, contemplating first bike 0 points1 point ago

Where is this?

[–]AverageGuyNamedSam 1 point2 points ago

I feel like that's just way too sketchy to even enjoy

[–]jugglist 0 points1 point ago

/r/bicycling wants to ride uphill.

[–]abnormalbrain 0 points1 point ago

Yeah. I don't love grinding my old 400 up tight turns on gravelly hills.

[–]20thMaine'94 Virago XV535S 0 points1 point ago

My rear tire would disagree...

[–]Boriken 0 points1 point ago

That's gotta be an amazing ride. Sweet spot.

[–]MechaSnacksIndiana 1 point2 points ago

It's weird how similar r/longboarding and /r/motorcycles are.

[–]desmosabie02' VFR 800 0 points1 point ago

Some roads are ones that make you able to ride any. I would love it.

[–]biggusmickus2001 BMW R1150GS 0 points1 point ago

Is that a BMW R80GS?

[–]epepepturbo'02 FZ1 0 points1 point ago

This road looks like it would be fun on a 250cc motard. It's way to narrow and tight to have any fun on a bigger bike, though.

[–]SkippyTheDog -1 points0 points ago

What on earth is so "fun" about switchbacks? I see these pictures on rideit all the time, asking "don't you wish you were here?" and the truth is: no, I don't. I like curves, I like straights, I like wide curves, I like sharp curves, but why on earth do some people consider straight -> sharp, sharp curve -> straight -> sharper curve -> x10 to be fun? It's something that baffles me to this day.

[–]IronfistMI - 2012 Honda CBR 250R 0 points1 point ago

For the thrill and the challenge.

[–]omfghi2u 0 points1 point ago

I don't own a motorcycle (nor have I ever ridden one) and I want this to be me.

[–]AlpinestarheroSV650sx 0 points1 point ago

Sir / Madam, I understand that it could be your time to have a go at experiancing the euphoric high that is riding a motosikle.

[–]AlpinestarheroSV650sx 0 points1 point ago

I most certainly would like to be there. Hell, I'd even ride a BMW Charely Boorman too.

[–]MrRicey2006 SV650s 0 points1 point ago

Can honestly think of nothing better than being on this road with a few friends blasting through in the sun.

[–]MuginGSX650F 0 points1 point ago

Why not just go somewhere simular without all the sand?

[–]IAmApessimist 2 points3 points ago

Yes. I. Do.

[–]troubledparent 1 point2 points ago

Yes, I certainly do.

[–]kleinbl00 1 point2 points ago

...particularly if I can get BMW's spotters to hold the gravel trucks back until I make a few photogenic passes.

[–]Anhedonique -3 points-2 points ago
