Ok- remember the 2006 world cup game between Portugal and the Netherlands? Remember how awful and incompetent the officials were in that game specifically, but the knock out round in general?

That's what American football fans have been dealing with this season. Awful incompetent game ruining officiating that sucks the fun out of the game.

[–]HappyVlane 20 points21 points ago

They seem to be replacement refs, so where are the real refs then?

[–]isayniner 74 points75 points ago

They're on strike and want more money. They are sort of proving that they deserve it.

[–]OysterCookie 40 points41 points ago

Actually the NFL Owners are locking the real Refs out, The NFLRA (Refs Union) just wants to keep the pensions they were promised by the NFL, but the NFL wants to give them a 401k instead, it would end up costing the NFL about 2 million dollars in total, or $63,000 per owner

[–]prmaster23 12 points13 points ago

it would end up costing the NFL about 2 million dollars in total, or $63,000 per owner

Really? Two million dollars? There are probably thousands of millionaires who are hardcore NFL fans that could give that amount of money without breaking a sweat.

[–]OysterCookie 23 points24 points ago

Plenty of NFL players have offered up the money, but it's part of the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) between the NFL and the NFLRA, so it's not quite that simple, but yes, the owners are being incredibly greedy, and it doesn't help that the team that got fucked last night (the Green Bay Packers) are owned by the fans instead of one single owner

[–]pocketchange2247 12 points13 points ago

Well all we have to do is get the owner of the Packers... wait.

[–]88eaver 9 points10 points ago

You, sir, deserve an upvote.

For those who doesn't understand why, there is 112,158 "owners" known officially as stockholders. The fans own the Packers.

[–]svsvsvs 14 points15 points ago

If they had 200 more owners, they'd make the Fibonacci sequence.

[–]TheOrganicMachine 1 point2 points ago

this needs to be a thing. NOW.

[–]marcos_danix 0 points1 point ago

It's like an annoymous (sport) society then? Like the SAD in Portugal and Spain.

[–]scots23 3 points4 points ago

That's why it's funny what Clay Matthews did.. Posting Goodell's number on Twitter. Hey, the team's owned by the fans, he's just giving the letting the fans have a chance to express their concern! Granted, he'll probably get fined out the ass.

[–]cynognathus 3 points4 points ago

Granted, he'll probably get fined out the ass.

TJ Lang responded perfectly to this potential:

Fuck it NFL.. Fine me and use the money to pay the regular refs.

[–]WilsonHanks 1 point2 points ago

I'm sure they could, but they shouldn't have to. The NFL should pay.

[–]isayniner 2 points3 points ago

Ok. Thanks for clarifying. I just knew they were in a lockout. I haven't been following too closely. They need to make a deal soon because these games are getting ridiculous now.

[–]Regular_Ghost 0 points1 point ago

Oh sure, give matt flynn a fat contract but fuck the officiating crews.

[–]Preblegorillaman 0 points1 point ago

As someone from Green Bay, the idea of an "owner" is still so foreign to me...

[–]feyo 38 points39 points ago

Wasnt it more like they wanted the same money as before?

Last I read about it the NFL wanted to shrink what they pay into the pension fund by 50%, and thats what the refs didnt like.

[–]omgitsthepast 25 points26 points ago

The NFL raised their pay, but decreased their pension enough to where overall they are compensated less.

[–]9602 12 points13 points ago

So, they pay millions for a few big guys that hardly even play, but stiff the referee for a few bucks? Nice thinking..

[–]BZLuck 6 points7 points ago

Welcome the new game we like to call "The Bottom Line!"

[–]scots23 6 points7 points ago

I'm pretty sure I heard on chicago sports radio this morning that the cost for everything for the referees (salary, pension, benefits, etc.) costs 1/3 of 1% of the gross revenue of the NFL. Just pay the money. This latest screw-up kind of proves to the NFL that they have been idiots in claiming the replacements are good. This could potentially ruin a team's season.

[–]skeptical_spectacle 3 points4 points ago

Gross revenue is a terrible measure of profitability. That statement is devoid of any tangible meaning.

[–]BZLuck 1 point2 points ago

It's all about greed. It's a big battle of greed and egos. Look at the stupid ass black-out rule. "Oh, so you don't want to spend $250 - $300 on two tickets, parking and some snacks, just to spend 4 hours in our stadium? Well to punish you, we won't let ANYONE watch the game locally. That'll teach you to buy tickets next time." Pure extortion.

[–]duhon78 0 points1 point ago

Last night's Packers/Seahawks game is a perfect example....

[–]Helpfulandattractive 0 points1 point ago

Or potentially save my teams season!

[–]noodlejabb 0 points1 point ago

As a general rule, anybody making millions is going to play a shitload. The only exceptions to this are a few teams like the Vikings, who are dumb enough to pay their punter $5 million.

[–]Zoccihedron 0 points1 point ago

I don't know what originally caused it but last I heard (which was on Thursday) the NFL and refs were in agreement on everything but pensions now.

[–]Drivelsome-Bore 4 points5 points ago

They're not on strike, they're being locked out by management. So it's more like the league is greedy and wants more money, proving that the league deserves the shitty officiating that they're getting.

[–]isayniner 1 point2 points ago

Good call. I didn't know the whole story.

[–]diggitydiggitydan 6 points7 points ago

They are not on strike, they are locked out by the owners. Their bargaining agreement expired and they have to negotiate a new one. The owners want to take away the ref's pension plans and replace them with 401ks. The refs said no because they obviously have planned their retirements around the pension plans and its kind of a dick move to take it away now.

The owners are just trying to make a power play and use the general economy as an excuse to strip benefits from the refs even though NFL profits hit a new record every year.

So this is NOT on the refs, they would love to be out on the field but if you don't sign a new bargaining agreement, then by law the old one is still in place. This means the pension plans would still be in place. Just another case of billionaires showing you just how they became billionaires in the first place.

tl:dr It is a LOCK OUT not a strike. It's the owners fault.

[–]CorranHorn 3 points4 points ago

Okay, I need people to understand this because it pisses me off that people can be so ignorant about basic labor conventions, and then falsely attribute the blame for why people aren't working.

A strike is when the employees decide not to work, in order to try to win a negotiation. See the Chicago teachers strike.

A lockout is when the employer bars the the employees from coming into work.

The NFL refs aren't striking. They are locked out and can't preform their job. The NHL players aren't striking. They have been bared from working. The Chicago teachers were striking.

[–]Ghostwalker8 0 points1 point ago

Seems like they're the only ones who can do their jobs right. Maybe they deserve a raise.

[–]Hotwir3 0 points1 point ago

STOP UPVOTING THIS GUY HE IS WRONG.

[–]Der_Dingel 9 points10 points ago

The battle of Nuremberg, don't remind me. I'm Dutch and this was the worst football night of my life. I was studying in Switzerland at the time and we went to a public viewing in Zurich. 100 of us Dutchies against 1000 Portuguese in the public viewing area. Netherlands lost in the most frustrating way. Afterwards I realized I lost my wallet and then I missed the last train home because I was looking for my wallet.

Best football night of my life was also in Switzerland. Berne 2008 European championships. I managed to get a ticket to the first Holland game against ruling world champions Italy. We overruled them unexpectedly. It was amazing to be in the stadium and these images still give me goosebumps.

[–]Bezulba 2 points3 points ago

that match.. pure football porn. goddamn we were good.

[–]chrismastere 6 points7 points ago

Portugal vs. Netherlands in '06 world cup was legendary.

[–]spacelemon 1 point2 points ago

i have no idea what the fuck that first bit means, but some how i agree with it sucking.

[–]Anon6942 0 points1 point ago

Nicely done.

[–]Makalu 0 points1 point ago

Or in any England match ever.

[–]muchogucho 465 points466 points ago

Both you and the refs...

[–]theuserman 54 points55 points ago

I don't even watch football but based on my impressions of all the uproar it certainty seems that way.

[–]ravelle 77 points78 points ago

I watched the Superbowl, but it was more like the Commercial Championship.

[–]Durzo_Blint 34 points35 points ago

Plenty of people just watch for the commercials. Some of them are really good and all of them are extremely expensive.

[–]scooterboo2 10 points11 points ago

Relevant xkcd:

http://xkcd.com/60/

[–]ARedFez 4 points5 points ago

Save for the Doritos commercials.

[–]ravelle 1 point2 points ago

Last time it was mostly Adam Sandler's new movie Jack and Jill, every 2 minutes, that and car commercials.

[–]DaJoW 0 points1 point ago

I watched it in Sweden a couple of years ago so they weren't Superbowl ads, they were middle-of-the-night-on-a-small-channel ads. Mostly SMS-loans and stuff iirc.

[–]Vik1ng 0 points1 point ago

Plenty of people just watch for the commercials.

Yeah watching commercials during the Super Bowl was really great in Germany... this was the one they showed at least twice every break. Ok in their defense they had some variations of it.

[–]grrrranimal 8 points9 points ago

it really is amazing how appropriate the posted image is to what happened last night...like I can imagine the ref looking around confused before saying "uhhh....touchdown?"

[–]phoenixrawr 2 points3 points ago

Makes me think of this. Except that people are probably not quite as happy about it.

[–]standardconfimed 51 points52 points ago

[–]slvrbullet87 20 points21 points ago

god Desean Jackson is a jackass... fast though

[–]BFG_9000 5 points6 points ago

Doesn't the egg need to touch the ground?

[–]dirtybirdsATL5214 5 points6 points ago

In rugby

[–]Bigcat710 1 point2 points ago

What you do with your egg is your business, the Football just has to pass the goal line.

[–]NFL_Replacement_Ref 34 points35 points ago

"Touchceptionback!"

[–]ZombieMolester 1 point2 points ago

nice one :P

[–]NFL_Replacement_Ref 9 points10 points ago

I really hope the lockout continues ... this account could be so much fun.

[–]wichie 18 points19 points ago

As a European, i don't follow the NFL but i get the rough idea and seeing all the uproar i actually looked and read up on the rules etc. My conclusion was, id be furious if i was an NFL fan and even more furious if i was a packers fan.

What i don't understand is that the decision went under review and it was still given? can anyone explain why? it seems pretty obvious pulling the ball out of someones hands after play has stopped it cant be a touch down, heat of the moment it may given, but after review?

[–]akatherder 17 points18 points ago

Only certain things are reviewable. They ruled this play as "simultaneous possession" (i.e. two guys caught a ball at the same time) which is not reviewable. Once that call is made, that part of it isn't written in stone and can't be reversed.

So when they review the play, they are only allowed to look at whether the pass was complete or incomplete. Since the ball never touched the ground, it was a complete pass (just not to the correct person...)

[–]I_like_squirtles 8 points9 points ago

Simultaneous possession is reviewable in the end zone.

[–]akatherder 0 points1 point ago

Ok, that makes sense. I think that came out during the NFL press conference today. I don't think "simultaneous possession" can initiate a review, but since it was a touchdown and all scoring plays are reviewed, they should have been able to reverse that.

[–]VulvaPuncher 2 points3 points ago

The thing that really got my jibblits in a bunch is that the one ref had the right call but instead of pleading his case just said "meh, fuck it."

[–]hypermog 2 points3 points ago

"Under the rule for simultaneous catch, the ball belongs to Tate, the offensive player."

However, "The aspects of the play that were reviewable included if the ball hit the ground and who had possession of the ball."

"Referee Wayne Elliott determined that no indisputable visual evidence existed to overturn the call on the field, and as a result, the on-field ruling of touchdown stood."

-NFL.com

So it seemed like they could have still changed the simultaneous possession call.

[–]iamagainstit 7 points8 points ago

football is basically rugby with 4 rule changes. 1. add downs (like in rugby league), 2. allow forward passing (as long as the throw happens from behind the down line) 3. get rid of offsides 4. allow blocking.

there are of course other minor rule changes but those are the basics. anyways, this call was the equivalent of one team running to the goalline, about to score a try when the other team strips the ball, yet giving the try to the first team even though they clearly didn't touch the ball down.

[–]clashmo 0 points1 point ago

thanks

The rules I already knew, they event causing all the chaos I needed filling in on

[–]aiel42 1 point2 points ago

For some reason, the rules say that during the review they can only determine if it was an actual catch, not who is in possession.

So, the possession was already determined (incorrectly) before the review started and could not be reversed.

[–]wichie 2 points3 points ago

This to me is baffling. Rugby over here for example, when there is doubt in a point scoring decision it goes to a 4th official, where they look at all angles to make sure the decision is the right one.

If they are looking at the video anyway, maybe some sort of common sense ruling would help?

[–]grrrranimal 4 points5 points ago

it's the same in football usually. Now all scoring plays are automatically reviewed I believe. Simultaneous possession on a scoring play is pretty rare though and the rules have been changing yearly with regards to review.

[–]baby_gorilla 2 points3 points ago

Don't worry, we don't understand it either.

[–]wichie 2 points3 points ago

One benefit has come from this, since seeing this incident its made me want to get into the NFL and follow it more. Only problem is coverage in the UK is poor at best!

[–]cklinske 0 points1 point ago

The biggest reason is that they need "indisputable" video evidence to overturn a play. This means unless the reviewer is absolutely, 100% sure that only the defender caught the ball, he couldn't overturn the call on the field. This brings up another issue, which is that there were two different calls on the field, and the official call wasn't announced until after the review.

[–]fatguybayonet 18 points19 points ago

Congrats OP, you just passed the NFL's Replacement Official competency exam. Please put in your two week notice to Foot Locker and proceed to the nearest NFL game.

[–]marathon 25 points26 points ago

what nfl posts? I've seen more posts complaining about nfl posts than any nfl posts

[–]4chanscaresme 5 points6 points ago

I woke up this morning and read three in a row on the front page... It's all timing that came through after MNF.

[–]kolossal 0 points1 point ago

You do know that your front page is vastly different from everyone else? It all depends on which subreddits you are subscribed to.

[–]Hotwir3 0 points1 point ago

On /r/all last night the top 3 posts were /r/nfl

[–]akuzin 5 points6 points ago

You should join us at /r/nfl - an absolutely amazing subreddit. It really is, a lot of good analysis (better than any ESPN reporter). A bit of trash talking (always good for sports) and just in general good content. I frequent it every day. But yeah back to your post, doesn't a "touchdown" just sound awesome, like a jetliner landing or something?

[–]jaberwocky69 4 points5 points ago

Touchdown in your language might be GGGGGOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–]KomradeKettlebell 2 points3 points ago

That would be Mexican and not European, so probably still confusing.

[–]Mack488 36 points37 points ago

So this year the normal group of experienced refs who rarely screws up got locked out due to a strike. But you need refs to a game right? So the NFL hired some basically trained replacements that have just done a horrible job and have made, what is being called, the worst call in NFL history. Bad part of it, we are only two weeks in out of the 13 games play. Not counting playoffs and Super Bowls. Everyone knows who watches American Football stateside are pissed off, it really was the worst call I've ever seen.

And if you're curious our football is like Rugby on steroids.

[–]UkeOverThere 50 points51 points ago

You have the basic concept right but your figures are wrong. There are 17 weeks of regular season games; each team has 1 bye week so every team plays 16 games across the regular season. We have just finished week 3 and are moving into week 4. So far 48 games have been played and, of those 48, many of them have had terrible play calls made which is hugely affecting the integrity of the sport. Players are playing rougher because they can get away with - risking more injuries. Coaches are confusing the underqualified referees into getting extra yardage, extra timeouts and even just extra time on the clock.

If the normal referees dont get reinstated soon this will be a very 'dirty' year for the NFL.

I am a Ravens fan from the UK and I would say that making any comparison between rugby and american football is foolish. They are vastly different sports with only 2 major similarities; the ball shape (loosely) and the contact level.

[–]Timid_Pimp 10 points11 points ago

[–]UkeOverThere 6 points7 points ago

Thanks! I was going to support the Chargers based on them being the most local team to my favourite US city - Los Angeles. I saw a few photos of Phillip Rivers and, with the help of my Broncos fan friend, decided against it.

[–]CoolInterstingMan 10 points11 points ago

How can you not like Rivers?'

http://imgur.com/4R1Rz

[–]slynnc 2 points3 points ago

Ravens fan from Ohio here :( I get a lot of heat. It's nice to see there are other Ravens fans, I was beginning to think they were fictional creatures!

Edit: changed words/punctuation

[–]PonsAsinorumBerkeley 1 point2 points ago

Also a problem: games are regularly taking 3+ hours to complete.

[–]TyredditorusRex 5 points6 points ago

Aren't we three weeks in?

[–]Frankeh 11 points12 points ago

And if you're curious our football is like Rugby on steroids.

Aaaand, shitstorm time.

[–]thekintnerboy 1 point2 points ago

Thank you! That's really helpful.

[–]americanslang59 2 points3 points ago

we are only two weeks in out of the 13 games play

We're now going into week 4 out of the 16 games they play.

[–]ArMcK 17 points18 points ago

Have you ever seen Rugby? Our football is like rugby players on steroids, and then dressed by their over-protective mommies.

[–]akatherder 33 points34 points ago

True, but they need that because it keeps them from being dead:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGTDyzzdq_c&feature=player_detailpage#t=18s

[–]blout 2 points3 points ago

To be fair, if the other player didn't have a helmet, the impact wouldn't have been that hard.

[–]killingthemsoftly 10 points11 points ago

I'm not up on my Rugby as much as others so I may be wrong on this, but my understanding is that in Rugby, you have to wrap up the opponent. On the other hand, in American football, you can get a long running head start and then fly elbow first into their life.

[–]AlunAlun 13 points14 points ago

As a rugby fan and occasional American Football watcher, what you say is mostly correct. Rugby's rules are pretty strict on what constitutes a legal tackle, specifically not permitting 'stiff arm tackles', shoulder barges, tackling the player in the air, tackling the player without the ball, and more.

Suffice to say that a typical american football hit would likely get a rugby player sent off!

[–]Gorau 2 points3 points ago

Rugby Union you have to wrap your arms around the player, rugby league charging is allowed, but not to the face. Tackles are different though since you want to control the ball after a tackle in rugby, as someone tackling you want to make it easy for your team to get the ball. That means not having it going flying somewhere. Basically American football and rugby are different sports. If you want to see the "dangerous" bit of rugby look at the scrum.

[–]baby_gorilla 2 points3 points ago

Not exactly right, but pretty close. There are different rules, but I think even more pertinent to the discussion is that you're simply going to hit differently depending on whether you're wearing pads or not. Look at any big hit from the NFL and imagine the same thing with no helmet or pads. Both players would likely be really fucked up. Rugby isn't better because they wear no pads, and football isn't better because they hit harder. It's a stupid thing to argue over and is fueled by people that hate things they don't know about.

[–]bdmflyer 27 points28 points ago

That overprotective gear also allows you to hit harder.

I really don't see the comparison, especially since everything I've seen shows that American football tackles are significantly harder, but there are fewer occurences.

But feel free to continue the "Everything American sucks" circlejerk.

Edit: source

4800 pounds of force vs 1700.

[–]styxwade 3 points4 points ago

Sport Science? Seriously? The same cretins responsible for this fucking travesty? Their formula appears to be: take a professional player of American sport, find talentless american nobodies who try to play non-american sport on Sunday afternoons, pretend these 4th-rate clowns who would get their arses handed to them by your average pub team are in fact global superstars, run flashy "comparison" with narration demonstrating your total ignorance of basic principles of the sport in question, wrap yourself in the stars and stripes, masturbate furiously.

In short, what a load of bollocks.

[–]Frankeh 2 points3 points ago

They should do snooker vs golf next.

[–]Frankeh 1 point2 points ago

That's not science. There were no constants.

Also top American football player vs shitty non ranking rugby team doesn't seem like a fair comparison.

They should have got Jonah Lomu out of retirement. I'd be willing to bet that second tackle would have easily matched the force of the American Football players.

Here's some other hits

And some more

I'll admit those kind of tackles are rarer than in American football, but they're without a doubt the same force but without pads which makes it quite a lot more badass.

It also seems like American football players don't give a fuck about running head first into people which is probably why there's more severe injuries. Even with a helmet that's a dumb idea.

[–]juanzy 3 points4 points ago

The NFL player they used is a Cornerback, which is a weak-hitting position.

[–]Frankeh 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't really matter about the players involved since the science was so shoddy. They easily could have just had both players run into the crash test dummy.

[–]bdmflyer 4 points5 points ago

Do you really want to see the rugby player get tackled with no gear on? A few broken ribs would only be the start.

Also, it's a hell of a lot more science than you guessing based on videos of your favority rugby player.

I also don't think you understand how hard 4800 pounds of force is. It's 3x a Heavyweight boxer's hardest punch. The tackled players in your first video seemed to feel it, but none of them reacted the way they would had they been hit by a car going 35 mph. Which is the equivalent of 4800 pounds of force.

[–]korvanica -2 points-1 points ago

Anyone who is thinking of defending rugby... STOP... you will probably be downvoted to oblivion... why?

'MERICA

[–]chrom_ed 2 points3 points ago

But he's soo wrong!!

[–]wesleywt 1 point2 points ago

NFL is not anything like Rugby. Different sports. One you have to run as hard as possible at the opponent. The other you have to be skillful.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I'm a Seahawk fan and even I thought that call was stretching it. Well, hopefully the refs well get some XP, level up and not be so bad in the next coming weeks.

[–]NFL_Replacement_Ref 3 points4 points ago

... but grinding is a bitch.

[–]sarsipius 0 points1 point ago

Being locked out has nothing to do with a strike, in fact they are the exact opposite things. The old refs make bad calls too, just not to the degree and frequency of the replacement refs. I agree the call last night was the worst ever, the owners need to pony up and pay the real refs ASAP.

[–]aliveanddead1 1 point2 points ago

What is this infamous call i've been hearing about so much?

[–]thefuckdude 0 points1 point ago

so ... and how is rugby played?

[–]BritishBatman 0 points1 point ago

From the UK. I rarely watch NFL, kind of like the NY Jets (closest team) and saw they were on Skysports so thought I'd watch. I did notice the refs were weird and more hestitant than usual (like turning their mic on before they knew what to say) cheers for clearing it up!

[–]Gyrant 0 points1 point ago

Football really is nothing like rugby.

They are both full contact sports that take place on a field, the goal being to get the ball through the other team to the other end of the field.

That's pretty much where the similarities end.

[–]mushmancat 0 points1 point ago

This was painful to read. Like someone who barely comprehends sports trying to explain sports to me.

[–]Billy_Bongs 2 points3 points ago

Imagine a scenario where the EPL is being reffed by a group composed solely of under-9 officials. And they don't know the rules.

[–]inkblot14 3 points4 points ago

[–]aposter 8 points9 points ago

For a European, think of it as getting 6 football goals at one time.

[–]Eurospective 1 point2 points ago

Ah, the I get more enjoyment out of my sport because the numbers are higher argument.

[–]Byeuji 3 points4 points ago

Do the players have to change their pants after every touchdown, then? I think the hooligans would blow their loads if 6 goals got scored at once...

[–]kabomlamma 5 points6 points ago

you would need 6 balls to do that, I don't think it would be legal

[–]Byeuji 2 points3 points ago

... good point...

[–]kabomlamma 2 points3 points ago

if something like that would happen in a European game, one team taking 6 balls kicking them in the goal and the referee gives that team 6 goals you would have a civil war on your hands

[–]ZombieMolester 1 point2 points ago

As a european i do follow the NFL. Got up last night at 2 am to watch my team the Packers, get robbed and dry fisted in the ass after beautiful second half. FUCK! I'M SO ANGRY!! GOD!

Simple. A touchdown is when a player (the "ball carrier") breaks the plane of the opponent's goal line ("end zone") with a brown prolate spheroid ("football") before he either steps out of bounds or part of his body (besides his hands or feet) touches the ground and an opposing player makes contact with him (a "tackle").

handegg certaintly seems popular over yonder tiddly pond

[–]giranda 2 points3 points ago

I'm American and I watch football(soccer), but I also watch American football, basketball, golf, and even baseball sometimes. I don't see why so many people hate on either kind of football. Every time our football teams go to play in London it sells out, so some Europeans must like our games.

[–]Tinkytoes 2 points3 points ago

Even some of us in the US don't get it, so you're not alone.

[–]I_am_not_novel 2 points3 points ago

Learn the game you cunt.

[–]Frankeh 3 points4 points ago

Can I watch that game somewhere? American football actually sounds exciting for once.

Usually the standing around doing fuck all bores me but I like the idea of everyone going ape shit at refs decisions instead of standing around.

[–]MarderFahrer 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, as long as it's not soccer, no European knows about Football, right? Wrong dude. Don't try and make this a "European" thing. It's just you. And you alone. Some of us care much much more about American sports than this organized running and flopping that soccer offers. Thanks.

[–]esskaypee 5 points6 points ago

I thought they had outlawed those 'touchdowns', after what the pedo did at Penn State...

[–]Squalor- 9 points10 points ago

No, no, you're getting your terminology mixed up.

They outlawed touchbacks.

It's okay. The referees did the same thing.

[–]77captainunderpants 3 points4 points ago

something something tight ends

[–]whileyouwereliving 3 points4 points ago

I'm european, I love the NFL. Nothing beats football (soccer for you) though.

[–]aitzim 0 points1 point ago

Makes more sense than calling it a try. That's a verb, you can't accomplish a verb. You accomplish nouns. Crazy euros.

[–]Jonny_Watts 6 points7 points ago

You don't touchdown. It's not I touchdowned, he touchdowned, she touchdowned.

You score a touchdown.

[–]aitzim 4 points5 points ago

err, that's what I was getting at.

[–]Jonny_Watts 2 points3 points ago

I touchdowned all over myself.

[–]The_Deacon 2 points3 points ago

Happy cake day!

  • try (noun)
    12. an attempt or effort: to have a try at something.
    13. Rugby. a score of three points earned by advancing the ball to or beyond the opponents' goal line.
    (Source)

  • "The term try comes from try at goal, signifying that originally, grounding the ball only gave the opportunity to try to score with a kick at goal."
    (Source) (Primary source 404'd)

  • touchdown (n.)
1864, from touch (v.) + down (adv.). Originally in rugby, where the ball is lit. touched down on the other side of the goal.
    (Source)

Considering that you don't have to touch the ball down to score a touchdown in American Football, there's issue to be taken with that term too. I'm pretty sure you were being a bit tongue-in-cheek though, so I'll leave you be :P

[–]The_Bangs 1 point2 points ago

No, homerun. But you were close.

[–]JimmFair -2 points-1 points ago

I'm English and I must say I love the NFL, its so much better than our football (soccer).

Edit: seriously guys I am english I live in Gloucestershire and have done all my life.

[–]DarthCaesar 12 points13 points ago

You're clearly not English.

[–]Spicy_food 1 point2 points ago

You're clearly not european.

[–]Mugros 0 points1 point ago

Actually many Europeans know what a touchdown is. The full rule set OTOH...

I loved to play American Football on the Amiga with my friend.

[–]RzaDaHut 1 point2 points ago

Playing rugby here in the States, I've seen this look. "Try?" Then , you explain a try "You touch down the ball" And everyone's face lights up like they've discovered the meaning of life.

[–]Zalenka 0 points1 point ago

Greeb bay was robbed last night. The stand-in refs ruined that game.

[–]dmmagic 1 point2 points ago

I haven't seen any NFL posts except for the slew of "As an X looking at all these NFL posts..."

WTH did I miss?

[–]Veltan 1 point2 points ago

Referee strike, replacement refs hired, they apparently aren't making very good calls.

[–]DJRD 1 point2 points ago

You're on the internet, therefore invalidating your post. We know you looked it up when you wanted to know what it meant.

[–]question99 0 points1 point ago

In which subreddits are you guys seeing football posts? I don't see any, and the only reason I know about this NFL thing is because of the posts whining about it.

[–]wolfesluck 0 points1 point ago

Brilliant. :)

[–]nixity 0 points1 point ago

Holy crap! Is this the one thing T-Rex's can do well?!

[–]dlan4327 0 points1 point ago

What NFL posts? Genuinely, could someone sum it up really quickly?

[–]zeebrow 0 points1 point ago

Could also be titled "Me watching the final play of Green Bay vs. Seattle"

[–]CptOblivion 0 points1 point ago

But seriously though, all what NFL posts?

[–]Thargz 0 points1 point ago

I strongly doubt any Europeans who have even the slightest knowledge of English are unfamiliar with "Touchdown". It's a term that is part of popular vernacular now.

[–]Doomdoomkittydoom 1 point2 points ago

Does Europe block Google?

[–]Amandrai 0 points1 point ago

As a Canadian I feel I am well versed in American football, but entirely by hearsay.

We have other sports where grown men covered entirely in plastic armour engage in.

[–]evilpancake123 0 points1 point ago

its even worse if you live on an remote island of 1 million,a.k.a cyprus...

[–]wiithepiiple 1 point2 points ago

The word touchdown makes more sense in Rugby, but you don't use that word. It confuses me.

[–]Warm_Kitty 0 points1 point ago

My thoughts exactly!

[–]andrewsmith1986 0 points1 point ago

Never watch rugby?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Don't worry, I'm a college student here in the US and don't understand sports in general nor do I care to learn.

[–]elkku 0 points1 point ago

bahaha

[–]Snorlax_Munchlax 0 points1 point ago

that would be a "Try...", can I or can I not award the try please?

Nigel... Yes? You may award the try.

[–]Jackmacncheese 0 points1 point ago

You're not missing out on the sport as much as you are missing out on movies about sport. Rudy, remember the Titans, and Brian song specifically.

[–]Spira9 0 points1 point ago

eggball?

[–]Dalaran 0 points1 point ago

dont tar us all europeans in with that.. Im welsh and a fucking huge eagles and Falcons fan!

just to prove it i know the difference between offensive and defensive pass interference!

[–]bassinine 1 point2 points ago

"touchdown" is American for "GOOOOOOOAAAL!"

[–]moonboy1 0 points1 point ago

I can hear Gandalf saying this-touchdOWN?

[–]Sheepiwastaken 0 points1 point ago

As a European that watches the NFL..

These refs suck major horse dick.

[–]EVJeevy 0 points1 point ago

Correct. Your training as a ref is complete.

[–]CAKEDONTLIE 1 point2 points ago

So imagine you're watching a football game, and your favorite team is tied, with no time left, and the opposing team takes a shot from midfield. This ball travels all the way to the goal, with the entire stadium watching, but the keeper tips it off the crossbar and out. Everyone knows it wasn't a goal. But then the ref runs in, signaling goal, they watch it on video, see no evidence that it was even close, and still decide its a goal. Your team gets fucked, and literally everyone but the people who should know, know it. That's whats going on.

[–]Capsize 0 points1 point ago

Im a UK based Eagles fan. More europeans should watch it. It's the only decent American sport :)

[–]Jay_Suf 0 points1 point ago

As an American who hates that I live in a pop/sports culture, my best translation is "GGOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!"

[–]Inarx 0 points1 point ago

I'm not even sure what NFL is. :|

[–]sleepyprojectionist 0 points1 point ago

Hey! I'm British and I follow the NFL.

Unfortunately I am also a Cleveland Browns fan, so my argument is invalid.

[–]chadmill3r 0 points1 point ago

Leg before wicket, never sicker? Wait.

[–]Tannon34 0 points1 point ago

The refs were British weren't they?

[–]EdtheConqueror 0 points1 point ago

Touchdown = try

[–]BeaSk8r117 0 points1 point ago

As an American who doesn't give a shit about the NFL looking at NFL posts: What the fuck is happening?

[–]YNot1989 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for not calling it Handegg.

[–]Masklin 0 points1 point ago

Best post this evening. Thank you sir!

[–]DoctorOctagonapus 0 points1 point ago

I haven't even see where all this stems from. It's like a giant version of /r/nocontext.

[–]jerisho 0 points1 point ago

[–]waffleninja 0 points1 point ago

TOUCHDOWN THURMAN THOMAS!

[–]Bencool 0 points1 point ago

No, it was a balk on goalie derek jeter, resulting in the loss of my virginity.

[–]compstomp66 0 points1 point ago

A touchdown is at least 3 but no more than 6 first class centuries.

[–]LaserOstriches 0 points1 point ago

Dangit Norbert!

[–]TimeToDoNothing 1 point2 points ago

OMG that's it! The new refs are European!

[–]kirfkin 0 points1 point ago

As a European who doesn't understand American Football...

You'd be a better ref than these guys. Welcome aboard!

[–]AngelixArch 0 points1 point ago

As an American... I feel the exact same way.

I also hate how football (actual damned football) is called soccer...

[–]hippiehendrix 1 point2 points ago

As a European why the fuck are you subscribed to the NFL subreddit?

[–]licquyd 0 points1 point ago
