[–]coldwarjunkie 232 points233 points ago

Although... has anyone seen Muhammad Ali recently?

[–]snoharm[!] 136 points137 points ago

He threw out the first pitch for the Marlins this year.

And by threw out, I mean he was wheeled to the center of the diamond and handed off the ball. It was really, really sad and in poor taste. He didn't seem entirely sure where he was. Boxing is a cruel sport.

Sorry for the buzzkill, guys.

[–]antwearingjetpack 92 points93 points ago

That's horrible. Obama must be brought to justice.

[–]rcinsf 1 point2 points ago

FINISH HIM!!!!

[–]Zygg 39 points40 points ago

Ever since the advent of gloves that sort of thing has been super common for that sport. Punching someone in the head hurts your hand, so back in the bare knuckle days boxers traded way more body shots.

[–]Jess_than_three 34 points35 points ago

Man, and here I'd've thought that gloves would've lessened the amount of head trauma. Counter-intuitive. =/

[–]BRSKKM 30 points31 points ago

It does, but it also means the fighter can take more shots for much much longer. It's the repeated head banging that does you in... which is why metal heads are so prone to Alzheimers.

[–]infamous-spaceman 18 points19 points ago

Don't boxers also hit with more force aswell, because without the glove a full force punch is more likely to break your hand?

[–]mebbee 11 points12 points ago

Most likely a combination of everything. The president of the UFC and one of his fighters was on Bill O'Reilly trying to dispel some of the misinformation about the dangers of MMA.

The smaller gloves in MMA lead to less repetitive head trauma, but more KO/TKOs. It's unintuitive, but I think the repeated bludgeoning (in boxing) is worse than simply getting knocked out and being done with it (mma).

[–]TheMeatball 5 points6 points ago

Not to mention the 10-count. Most UFC fights would probably go a lot longer if they were given 10 seconds to recover. MMA's stoppages save a lot of brain trauma too.

[–]mebbee 3 points4 points ago

Absolutely, good point. In MMA once a fighter is out, that's it. They're not given a chance to recover.

It's crazy to think that boxers can get KOed several times in a fight, but so long as they get up within a certain amount of time they continue and take more punishment.

[–]Weis 6 points7 points ago

Yes, basically the gloves make it worse for the boxers in some ways. Same way attaching blades to roosters in cockfights is actually more humane than making them fight with their natural spurs, the fight is over faster that way.

[–]liebkartoffel 26 points27 points ago

So, what you're saying is we should attach razor blades to boxing gloves.

[–]SirDigbyChknCaesar 2 points3 points ago

We, uh, we called that the stinger. They, they don't let you use that no more.

[–]honeynoats 0 points1 point ago

Flickr. ಠ_ಠ

[–]elj0h0 1 point2 points ago

I think they already do that in Japan. I would definitely watch

[–]wiithepiiple 1 point2 points ago

All I could think of with that is sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their frickin' heads.

[–]Brian175 2 points3 points ago

That's part of it and also the gloves add weight.

[–]Jess_than_three 9 points10 points ago

Are they seriously? Wow, TIL..

[–]OmegaSeven 8 points9 points ago

Yep, or at least similar conditions that result from brain trauma.

The moral here seems to be that head trauma is a cumulative thing. I know a few people who are pretty strong advocates of getting rid of football helmets for practically the same reason.

[–]SoManyNinjas 4 points5 points ago

This thread's just full of bad news, isn't it

[–]Dujen 2 points3 points ago

Yea, good way to piss in my cheerios this morn.

[–]slartbarg 0 points1 point ago

less cuts and hand injury, more traumatic brain injury

[–]kleinerDAX 11 points12 points ago

Gloves = larger surface and more weight without the pain in your hand when you hit someone. Thereby increasing the chance of hitting someone in the head and with more force.

There is a really interesting correlation with safety features being introduced and increased accidents. Human mentality = "Welp, got mah helmet, might as well go twice as fast now!"

[–]Muffinizer1 3 points4 points ago

While I agree gloves are not curing any head trauma, Larger surface area means the force is spread out more. would you rather have 50 lbs resting on a 1mm diameter rod sitting on you, or 50lbs resting on a 1 ft diameter object on you, assuming the 50 lbs is the only mass involved.

[–]Carbon_Dirt 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but it's not as much about the bruising directly at the hit site, it's more about the head being jarred and shaken repeatedly. The gloves allow more head shots because the puncher's hand is protected; so while there are fewer broken knuckle and cheek/jaw bones, there ends up being more long-term brain trauma.

It's not just that the gloves don't prevent that brain damage, its that in most cases they make it more likely to happen.

[–]dsac 0 points1 point ago

Thereby increasing the chance of hitting someone in the head and with more force.

increased surface area would increase the likelihood of hitting your target, but not necessarily with more force - it really depends on the area you're using to measure the impact.

bare knuckle fighting you're more likely to break bones, because the force is concentrated on a smaller area.

[–]scorpion347 5 points6 points ago

On the bright side... less crippled by broken hands.

[–]sellyourselfshort 0 points1 point ago

It could also be the Parkinson's syndrome. I know that boxing fucks peoples heads up quite a bit but I'm going to go out on a limb and say this had a bigger effect.

[–]HeadlessMarvin 2 points3 points ago

Similar situation with American Football helmets. They give a false sense of security and actually cause more head injuries.

[–]Zygg 0 points1 point ago

Exactly, more protection in the short term from little things, but they use it as a safety net and take more risk which is more dangerous in the long term

[–]Agehn 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, they're designed to protect the hands not the opponent.

[–]mrhhug 1 point2 points ago

it lengthened the fights.

[–]winkandthegun 1 point2 points ago

It's kinda the same thing with NFL helmets. They protect against the severe/fatal injuries, but because of the protection players started using their head as a weapon and boxers started hitting the head a lot more, thus causing more concussions.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Same with football having way harder hits than rugby

[–]mewarmo990 1 point2 points ago

Yup, it does seem counter-intuitive, right? Everyone in martial arts knows that the purpose of gloves is to protect your fists, not the other guy's face.

Your hands are padded against pain and injury, so you can punch harder.

[–]Fearlessleader85 2 points3 points ago

But in the days of bare-knuckle pugilism, a lot more people died in the ring. Mostly because there wasn't a TKO rule, and the fights often just went until someone couldn't continue. Combine this with some stubborn fuckers, and you end up with people dying left and right.

[–]Zygg 0 points1 point ago

But like you said that's cause they had fewer roles then, no tko's, the ref wouldn't stop the fight if a guy wasn't defending himself. People died because of the rules in play, not cause they didn't wear gloves.

[–]That_Guy333 2 points3 points ago

I thought you said "He threw out the first PUNCH for the Marlins this year." when I first scanned over your comment!

[–]honeycombover 0 points1 point ago

yeah that is sad, although I'm sure the intentions were good of the people who organised it, continuing to attempt to honour a sports person despite their physical frailty. Up until recently he has been a person to carry his illness with massive dignity, it seems, in his public appearances. He was at the Olympics too, and that seemed to be a good thing, to me his dignity was still maintained, which I think is what you are saying? He was however completely reliant on a support person to participate, and I thought she too did a great job of helping maintain his dignity. It is fantastic that he has had the pride to remain visible and with public standing as long as he has, but you are right, a total buzzkill to hear of a public appearance thing that seems to add nothing to anyone's day... On another note, I laughed pretty hard at the OP's picture. Then I realised they were talking about Osama Bin Laden. facepalm. So now I am sad about two things. feelsbadman.jpg

[–]Kungafsand 5 points6 points ago

He was in the Olympics opening cermoney I think.

[–]OrSomething 4 points5 points ago

Closing ceremony, actually, if memory serves. Looking like a Thunderbirds puppet.

[–]xenospork 2 points3 points ago

I'm afraid it doesn't

First time I've used the mail as a legitimate source, hopefully the last.

[–]OrSomething 1 point2 points ago

Argh. Well, at least I was right about the Thunderbirds puppet thing.

[–]somebodyjones2 2 points3 points ago

i just love that his daughter chose the same career path... the one that has resulted in her father getting every meal through a straw... are you KIDDING me?

[–]I_Key_Cars 1 point2 points ago

I used to see him at the Coyotes games all of the time. The lockout might be the last straw for the old guy.

High school junior is probably not old to vote... Just sayin...

[–]aspergers-hermit 30 points31 points ago

Being this stupid, you don't know how many times he has failed a grade. He could very well be old enough to vote.

No he was the first black God.

[–]LyricBaritone 21 points22 points ago

No, Bill Clinton was

He was Morgan Freeman.

[–]BreadstickNinja 3 points4 points ago

What about James Earl Jones in The Man (1972)?

[–]Stormmando 81 points82 points ago

This is High School work?

[–]Kaziticus 53 points54 points ago

Seriously... I could see something like this in... I dunno, 5th grade maybe, but high school level?

[–]gwillen 23 points24 points ago

Hey, I had to write at least one multi-page report in 5th grade. This here is bullshit-grade.

[–]canteloupy 8 points9 points ago

I gave a detailed presentation on forest ants in 3rd grade and still remember it.

[–]Mitschu 4 points5 points ago

"The Corinthian War began in 395 BC and was a conflict primarily between the Spartans, Greeks, and Persians, mainly over the excessively opportunistic expansionist practices of Sparta after the 404 BC Peloponnesian War. It..."

Man, school has gotten a lot easier since I was in 4th grade... I remember practicing for a week to be able to say Peloponnesian without slurring or stumbling over it. And then the teacher had the gall to chew me out for mispronouncing "alliance" (I said a-lee-yance instead of ah-lie-yance and she gave me the ಠ_ಠ face.)

Just saying, canteloupy, I remember those days too, memorizing obscure facts so I could give a report without looking at notes... wtf is wrong with the HS "junior" in this picture? >.>

[–]canteloupy 6 points7 points ago

I was not in the US system at any point in my life but from what I hear, widespread standardized testing happened, along with teaching becoming a crappy career.

[–]Savir5850 1 point2 points ago

I mean how hard is it to look up a few facts on wikipedia and write them on a board? Or better? Print them.

[–]acepiloto 3 points4 points ago

A couple of years ago, when I was a sophomore in college (community college before I transferred to a four year university) I took a "physics" class. It was seriously shit I learned in elementary/middle school, more of a very basic overview of physical science. Don't get me wrong, I appreciated the A, but I just felt so bad for the people that hadn't already learned that material.

[–]sporkinatorus 1 point2 points ago

This is a prime example of why no child left behind was one of the worst things to happen to the education system.

[–]BikerRay 1 point2 points ago

I could see an 8 year-old bringing it home to mummy.

[–]Muskogee 7 points8 points ago

Apparently this is something that a high school kid turned in. That doesn't mean it actually met the requirements of the assignment. Also, this could be the student's very best effort, this could be what happens when the student remembers 5 minutes before class that he or she had an assignment due, or this could be a disgruntled student who thinks that no on actually cares what gets turned in and is trying to see what he or she can get away with.

[–]pdx_girl 3 points4 points ago

Could be an in-class assignment. For a hour class, with a half-hour of instruction... you only get 15 minutes to make a poster, then 15 minutes for all the groups to share. I had to do that many times in high school.

[–]Stormmando 0 points1 point ago

That's relieving to hear.

[–]HeadlessMarvin 0 points1 point ago

It's probably a prep class. I hope

[–]TheRedComet 0 points1 point ago

I know, wtf? High school Junior year I was in AP US History and reading a ton every week, with an exam (essay plus multiple choice) every Friday.

[–]JasonGD1982 53 points54 points ago

BARAACK

[–]McGrude 19 points20 points ago

Didn't your mom teach you to cover your mouth when you cough?

[–]ilrelevent 1 point2 points ago

[–]stillnotking 30 points31 points ago

Metaphorically killed. The kid is making a very insightful point about American pop culture and the transience of heroes.

[–]monkey_zen 10 points11 points ago

Technically it was a split decision.

[–]qhulk 9 points10 points ago

Muhammad Ali was able to defeat Superman but not America's 44th President. Sad day for all of us. Cassius Clay will be missed.

[–]joseph10000 13 points14 points ago

He's the first African-American President

White man, white woman, white president
Black man, black woman, African-american president
White man, black woman, African-american president
Black man, white woman, African-american president

[–]sweet_ned_chromosome 2 points3 points ago

PE in full effect.

[–]joseph10000 1 point2 points ago

Yeah boy!!!!

[–]liebkartoffel 1 point2 points ago

I'm American. My dad's ancestors are (mostly) German, and my mom's ancestors are Norwegian. If I were elected, would it be inaccurate to say that I'm the first Norwegian-American president?

I get what you're saying, but Obama's dad was, literally, from Kenya. He is of recent African ancestry. Ignoring the fact that defining ourselves with blurrily-defined ethnicities is rather silly, I think it's fair to say that Obama's African-American, in the same sense that others call themselves Irish-Americans, or Italian-Americans, or Polish-Americans.

[–]Upstairsredditacount 4 points5 points ago

He's also pretty evidently black. In the United States, if you are a non-latino black, people trying to be politically correct will refer to you as African-American. If your family came from Norway and lived there six generations back, you will still be called African-american if you have Obama's skin tone. America's PC Police seem to have a stigma agains "Black" as a race.

[–]canteloupy 7 points8 points ago

No this is about Baraack Obama. In an alternate universe this president did kill Muhammad Ali.

[–]friendlyfunfunman 10 points11 points ago

LOL the timeline was genius though

[–]e_illian 1 point2 points ago

... I see what you did there.

[–]probably_high -1 points0 points ago

I don't get it.

[–]AtomicCow 25 points26 points ago

You gave them an F on the project right? You gave them an F, and they didn't pass your class right?

[–]Paulus81 5 points6 points ago

He/she deserves an A for all the Karma they got the OP.

[–]WrathPie 29 points30 points ago

My GOD I want to see shittywatercolor do a picture of that!

[–]Captainshithead 2 points3 points ago

It's already so shitty though

[–]fyiiamaspy 2 points3 points ago

I'm gonna need to see some citations...

[–]forRuinSC 5 points6 points ago

I assumed this was elementary school until I read the title...

[–]WTFdinosaur 4 points5 points ago

?! America has a black president? They've kept the colour of his skin so quiet :O

[–]crkhobbit 4 points5 points ago

Everytime I see something like this, I have to ask myself, "Was I ever that stupid?" Then I remember that I was not, and I am happy again.

[–]superciuppa 4 points5 points ago

well what do you want they're just kids... second glance at title HIGH SCHOOL ?!

[–]clarque 3 points4 points ago

Don't let the stupidity of a few get to you. Most of the kids in High School are being taught at a college level. They will go on to shape the future, while kids like this will keep the economy going by flipping burgers for 40 years.

To be fair - from the video of Romney saying that, it is quite apparent he was just trying to be funny: http://www.snopes.com/politics/romney/windows.asp

[–]Paulus81 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I hate it when people "casually" bring politics t r/funny or r/wtf.

[–]apowsawce 6 points7 points ago

Seriously though, let me get my surprised face on to find out that Romney's joke went completely over reddit's head. After it was posted on THE DAILY-FUCKING-KOS!

C'mon guys, this is the same goddamn ad hominem bullshit we saw with the last election.

[–]perdidoentx 2 points3 points ago

*Ad hominem. Although it's almost a homophone.

[–]apowsawce 0 points1 point ago

Whoops

[–]liebkartoffel 0 points1 point ago

I figured it had to be a joke, though it's a pretty bizarre thing to joke about. I'm still not entirely sure what he was trying to say.

[–]Garak 7 points8 points ago

a candidate, not a nominee a fucking candidate, for the President of the United States asked why there aren't windows you can roll down on an airplane

Hiya, smart guy. Just FYI, you have "candidate" and "nominee" backwards. Having a "candidate" say crazy things is not really interesting. Lyndon LaRouche was a presidential candidate for almost thirty years, and said crazy things routinely. And as pointed out elsewhere, Romney was joking.

So, you know, before you start organizing an anti-Idiocracy movement, maybe you should look inward and reflect on the fact that sometimes even smart people make mistakes.

[–]virtualmatrix555 2 points3 points ago

Wasn't he the first man on the moon?

[–]amtunit 2 points3 points ago

Back in high school a group did a presentation on how Jimmy Hendrix was alive and well and still releasing c.d's, they'd confused him with Lenny Kravitz.

[–]Shortstack031 2 points3 points ago

Obama has a great left hook!

[–]SETEAj 0 points1 point ago

 ctrl f "left hook"

DAMN YOU. WAS GOING TO WRITE THAT.

[–]VeryWrongImpression 2 points3 points ago

Of course he killed Muhammed Alli! With a name like that, the guy must be a terrorist.

[–]withlovediscovery 3 points4 points ago

As a high school Junior i'm not suprised, there are a lot of idiots.

[–]EmmaTwatson 2 points3 points ago

As an idiot I'm not surprised, a lot of us are high school juniors.

[–]jacqueofalltrades 6 points7 points ago

If you're actually not surprised, I am very sad for the state of education.

[–]dahockeymasta12 0 points1 point ago

Baraack Obama 4 prez!

[–]the8atman 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was a cute Elementary student's project. Cue MFW I read the title again.

[–]dubdubdubdot 1 point2 points ago

You wonder why the world fears America.

[–]Diplomjodler 1 point2 points ago

Breaking News: Muslims all over the world riot over the killing of Muhammad Ali by Barack Obama. Embassies on fire. Pakistani minister puts price on his head.

[–]mtheory007[!] 0 points1 point ago

They didnt even spell Ali right.

[–]whileyouwereliving 0 points1 point ago

Barack bumaye! Barack bumaye!

[–]SmokinDynamite 1 point2 points ago

I hate the guy. I mean, why the fuck did he have to kill Muhammad Ali!?

[–]that_guitar_guy 1 point2 points ago

He signed Healthcare Bill? The guy who works at my local pharmacy?

[–]iamaperson3133 0 points1 point ago

At first I thought this was going to be from Elementary School before I read the title....

[–]TeCuervo 0 points1 point ago

He gets to sign his own presidential pardon.

[–]josebolando 1 point2 points ago

BARACK WINS. FATALITY

[–]goofball_jones 0 points1 point ago

"If you even dream of beating me, you'd better wake up and apologize." -- Muhammad Ali

[–]Alphamabet 1 point2 points ago

Just a question, how old are high school juniors? It honestly looks like the work of a 10 yr old.

[–]Treees 1 point2 points ago

I had a classmate in high school give a short, rambling speech on "Adolph Hitler and the Aquarian Race". This was over a decade ago. Stuff happens, don't judge a generation for the mistakes of an individual.

[–]coldwarjunkie 1 point2 points ago

Aqua Man supported Hitler?

[–]Morvis42 0 points1 point ago

Muhammad Ali is fine. As you can see it says Obama killed Muhammad Alli, with two Ls. Completely different person. And definitely not Osama Bin Laden.

[–]one-eleven 0 points1 point ago

Do we know for a fact that this isn't true?

[–]rookoor 0 points1 point ago

Oh that's it, I'm voting for Romney now!

[–]samsterk911 1 point2 points ago

How did he even manage to spell Barack wrong. He had to have seen it 50 times just by typing it in google

[–]I_Key_Cars 1 point2 points ago

Did you give him an F and hand it back to him?

[–]Remoau 0 points1 point ago

u jelly?

[–]Bools -1 points0 points ago

They deserve a big fat fuckin F and a note home explaining their stupidity

[–]Mondonater 0 points1 point ago

Hey, if the future generations become on average dumber, then that would increase a demand for smart people with reasonably marketable skills. If smart people (and their jobs) become more in demand with less supply, then that means the smart people will make (comparatively more) bank. Not a bad deal, really.

[–]Feathrende 0 points1 point ago

Wasn't Obama the 42nd president?

[–]thisismy7thusername 0 points1 point ago

Busywork? In High School? NEVER!

[–]Macdaddy357 0 points1 point ago

No, Rambo killed Mohammed Alli in WWIV.

[–]jaredb45 0 points1 point ago

Can't even spell his name correctly! Sad, just so sad.

[–]shauncorleone 0 points1 point ago

I'm equally concerned this comes anywhere close to passing for craftsmanship on an 11th grade project.

[–]somebodyjones2 0 points1 point ago

holy shit... that's not a High School Junior. No fucking way...

[–]theemptyshell 0 points1 point ago

Didn't even get his name right.

[–]Bigtimmy123 0 points1 point ago

He killed Muhammad Ali? I think they hopefully mean Osama

[–]welcometaerf 0 points1 point ago

Him do good president thing. Me hungry.

[–]mesor 0 points1 point ago

His face under killed Muhammad Ali is fucking perfect. Especially if you read it literally and not an ignorant misnomer.

[–]Nicombobula 0 points1 point ago

It's a conspiracy!

[–]pdcgimpy 0 points1 point ago

To be fair.....there still is time. Maybe this child is a prophet.

[–]philmarcracken 0 points1 point ago

This pic has never made so much sense until now.

Obama telling the children of Ali's demise

[–]pesarchickr 1 point2 points ago

In 2007, I read a paper by a student that called him "Brocko Bama"

[–]coldwarjunkie 1 point2 points ago

At first I read that as Bronko Bama.

[–]lovelesschristine 1 point2 points ago

Looks like some of the reports I did. The kind where I wake up 3 hours before school with a pen and poster board and write down the best BS I can think of.

[–]Xervicx 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure which part to feel more fearful of... The quality of the information or the quality of the project as a whole.

[–]D-Ack 1 point2 points ago

I also fear the future, who will protect us with Muhammad Ali gone?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

As a Junior in high school, I fear for my classmates.

[–]heracleides 0 points1 point ago

He isn't African-American.

Putting aside the Ali comment for a moment, what the hell kind of high school junior uses crayons on their social studies project?

[–]urfcaptain 0 points1 point ago

Or magic marker, or whatever it is, looks like something a 4th grader would do...

[–]adzug 0 points1 point ago

misspelled ali also

[–]HotwaxNinjaPanther 0 points1 point ago

4th grade I can imagine. High school level? They shouldn't bother grading it. Just staple a burger king job application to the front, go home and start drinking.

Poor Muhammad Ali! He had a dream! he was a pro golf champion! but it all went downhill after he murdered his wife & then got acquitted..

[–]Willard2566 0 points1 point ago

Hmmm, it's funny...Johnny spent so much time in his room on the internet and that's the best he could do?

[–]DeHart666 0 points1 point ago

[–]Rabidpotatoes 0 points1 point ago

I fear for our future for anyone who says "President Obama killed..." and put any name in there. Even if it is Osama. That isn't factual at all.

Why the fuck would I vote for the guy that killed Muhammad Ali? Fuck that guy, I don't want a man like that in power... asshole.

[–]rednoodleturkey 0 points1 point ago

That's nothing. I took "The African-American Culture and Experience" as an online course last year. My final was 10 questions. Well, it was 9 questions, and the last was...

"Barak Obama"

I have a picture somewhere. If anyone cares, I'll dig it up.

This was from my professor. MY PROFESSOR. Yes, it's a spelling error. I don't think it's acceptable, especially given the course. But I'd be willing to forgive that if the final "question" wasn't "Barak Obama"...ugh.
