Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

The color is off. They are actually white. Family Pieridae, probably Aporia crataegi. I'd guess the pic was taken in Europe.

The expert in the independent article says that they are blue?

Some years ago in the Balkans, clouds of blue butterflies gathered on dense banks of Artemisia that had flourished all of a sudden. A change in the soil's nutrient levels and a disturbance of dormant seed banks had led to this dense colonisation. It was 1999, and the plants were blossoming in Kosovo.

In the 1990s, mass graves hid the victims of Kosovo's genocide in which Albanian Kosovans where killed by Serbs. But the dead are not that easy to hide. They leach into the soil, raise the nutrient level, feed the weeds, lure the butterflies. No vivid, happy dreams. Not for anyone.

But maybe in different areas they have different colours?

The CNN picture is of a "Blue" in the family Lycaenidae. Not related to OP's species. The confusion lies in the common names of butterfly subfamilies, and the inaccurate bluish tinge on OP's picture.

You don't need squish, you just need to touch their wings. They are covered in little hairs/scales and if you touch them they can't fly... they flop around on the floor and die of starvation. Well, if the cat doesn't squish them first.

This might be adorable if you don't have a cat. If you have a cat, then you know that kitty is going nuts trying to viciously murder (and possibly eat) as many butterflies as possible. Then it will roll around in a pile of slaughtered butterflies until it comes over to you, purring, and vomits a butterfly and stomach acid slurry into your lap.
