                                        I love real special effects. You look at something like Hellboy where almost everyone was in a costume and the settings were real sets instead of total green screen, and it looks awesome!

                                        I believe it is just a talented director. The Lord of the Rings films are composed of a great deal of practical effects with miniatures mixed with CGI. When you see shots like Helms Deep those shots are about 40% miniature, 30% CGI and 30% real location. It is a complicated shot, but it really blends well. Also considering that those effects are basically from 2000, it is amazing how well those shots hold up to even modern movies. It wasn't until he went overboard with it by having Legolas do backflips off of aliphants did he really lose the realism.

                                        The shot of the fangorn river dam bursting and flooding Isengard always bothers me. You can built an epic 1/20 scale miniature of a scene, but real water and fire are always going to be 1:1.

                                        It's hard to see in 360p, but Here, at 4:15 and then again at 4:30, the leading edge of the water gives away the scale of the miniature set really clearly. When compared to the much better CG moments interspersed within the video, you can really see the failings of miniature sets.

                                        I think that the decision to use such a small scale model is what killed that scene: when you look at the behind the scenes documentary for the crash of the Nebuchadnezzar in the Matrix Revolutions, the ship and the dock are much larger, so the problem of real fire is much harder to spot. Isengard looks to be about the same scale as a sand castle.

                                        Plus I suspect that pyrotechnics is a more advanced film science than flooding, as blowing up miniatures is a time honored film tradition, but drowning them is much less common.

                                          That said CGI is usually done badly but there are exceptions (Avatar, Prometheus etc...)

                                          Lucas gave CGI a bad name. Really I blame him solely. I remember when Jurassic Park came out and CGI was the shit, everyone was excited about it and how it blew the limitations off of filmmaking. Then fast forward 8 years later to when Attack of the Clones came out and literally the whole thing is draped in shitty CGI, just makes Star Wars look like a shitty video game. That is what made people not like CGI. Then we had things like the Matrix Reloaded that kept that tradition up. Sure there were plenty of movies that had bad CGI but people expect bad effects from some films. I mean even with practical effects most of them from the 70's and 80's don't look that great. But when a big movie has horrible effects and it is CGI everyone blames the mechanic, when really it is the horrible director.

                                            In case anyone was confused, Dead Alive and Braindead are the same movie. Dead Alive was the name used for the North American release. It was Braindead in the U.K. and New Zealand.
