The "Hall of mirrors" effect in Doom wasn't a barrier, it was the renderer filling the empty space outside the map. Meaning you probably used noclip to bypass any barriers to begin with.

(this is assuming the level designer didn't neglect to assign a texture to a linedef)

Right, back in the day when you could fall outside the level boundary or see backfaces because of poor collision detection. True, I cheated, that was Doom with noclip.

They really id ho a little overboard....i remember BL1 when id climb stuff you werent supposed to so i had a good sniper spot.
