It is unsafe, but I've done it.

Drove cross country with two cats. Initially had both leashed to the back of the hatchback so that they couldn't reach the front seats.

As an experiment, I unleashed them and drove some empty neighborhood streets to see what happened. One stayed in the back. The other climbed into my lap and fell asleep.

Continued to drive with a lap cat. No problems.

I did it once with my first cat when she was a kitten. The first thing she did was crawl up under the brake pedal. I lucked out and managed to get her out from under there, but realized if there was any sort of emergency I would be faced with an accident or squishing my cat. Never again.

I've done the same. It really isn't as unsafe as these people seem to think. It would depend on the cat, whether they would be calm in the car or freaking out running all over.

I realize that its hard to worry about something that barely ever happens, but its still not a good idea. Its like wearing a seat belt. 99% of the time it doesn't matter. When it does make a difference, it makes a large one.

For me it's the issue of the safety of the animal. If you get hit, free agents in the car will go flying. My mom got rear ended by a car going 55 mph last year with our two dogs in the back. If they hadn't been in crates they would have gone through the front window.. The crates were decimated but the dogs were safe.

Yup, I do this often. If the cat is well behaved (most aren't) then it's quite safe. Safer than texting and driving anyway, and more people do that then drive with a cat on the loose.

Besides the danger of your pet flying out onto the pavement in case of an accident.. I've seen two identical situations of people putting a loose cat into their car and the cat climbing up under the dashboard and getting stuck.

I don't get the logic behind it. It's unsafe and pretty damned negligent.

I would like to add that depending on the cat's reaction, movement, and if they block your line of vision... I feel like this is distracted driving. And I know the cat's face is funny, but if the driver's reaction time was delayed to do this then it does put the lives of others at risk.

Yep, this happened to me when I was young and retarded. About a couple hours in to a 7 hour road trip the cat decided he really didn't like being in the car and thought under the gas pedal would be a good place to hide. Of course this happened while going up a steep and wind-y mountain pass.

So the car slows down considerably because there's an 18 lb cat blocking the application of pedal to metal, there's a long line of angry people behind me and a bunch of large trucks in the slow lane, who were at this point going a bit faster than me. I'm trying not to swerve too much and either run into the trucks or fall off the side of the mountain but the floor of the car is kind of far away when you're also trying to see over the steering wheel. So I grab the cat by the tail, which was the only part of him I could reach, and discover that he's surprisingly strong. He's got a death grip on the carpet and he's not letting go. Nope. He likes it under the pedal and is blissfully unaware that we're all about to die.

I finally did manage to pry him off the carpet and we made it over the mountain pass without anyone getting injured or dead. He was none too happy about getting dragged around by the tail and being in the car at all. I spent the next 5 hours trying to keep him from getting back under there. It was not a pleasant trip. Folks, don't do this the hard way. Get a crate.

For people that think this is unsafe. It could be, but if there's two people in the car, the cat can be managed by the passenger. I've done this a couple of times and it's not even half as unsafe as smoking, using phone or having annoying kids in the back.

After a few times, the cat knows which place he can't go and usually sits around and sleeps on your lap/shoulder. Though I would never recommend letting a cat loose in the car without having a passenger to make sure that the cat doesn't go in dangerous areas.

You're right that was uncalled for, I apologise, but despite what you may believe, there is no way that you can always predict your cats behaviour. What if you have to brake or swerve suddenly for instance? Are you seriously telling me that you would know exactly how your cat would respond in a frightening situation? It's not a human. It is not rational. It responds instinctively. Having an animal loose in the front of a car is obviously an irresponsible thing to do, no matter how much you love it or believe you understand it. I'm amazed that you would disagree.

Yeah I understand that in an emergency situation, the cat might hide under the seat or directly under the pedals. But when I do have my cat with me, I'm always way more cautious (I'm already a cautious driver, never had a single accident). If I have to break quickly, I'm gonna have my foot on the brakes before he even has the chance to jump down.

The only thing that frightens me is that if I get in an accident, the cat has no protection and will most likely die. I only brought him twice in my car. The only reason that I let him loose is that when he's in a cage, he gets really scared, sweats buckets, meows until he collapses and overall just looks miserable.

I agree that this shouldn't be done unless everything else has been tried, I'm just saying that it's not as unsafe as it seems to be if you're very cautious and you know what you're doing.
