Choose a CPU. Choose a motherboard that matches the CPU. Get some RAM that matches the motherboard (DDR3 vs DDR2).

Add a case, power supply, hard disk, DVD drive.

Video cards are sort of optional these days - an AMD APU or newer Intel CPU can manage without one, but performance isn't great. Not all Intel boards support using the on-CPU video.

When you get all the parts, you put the CPU, RAM and heat sink onto the motherboard, then you put the motherboard into the case, then put everything else into the case, then plug everything in to the power supply and motherboard.

It's not hard to work out. All the cables are shaped so that plugs don't physically fit in the wrong places.

When I first built a computer, I didn't even have Google to support me. :P
