When it comes down to it, I'm kind of glad there has been this whole replacement referee thing.
Here is why: Before this season everyone acts like being a referee is the easiest job on earth, and most people act like the regular referees are incompetent. This whole thing with the replacements has really shown how good the regular referees are at their job and has opened people's eyes to the regular NFL referees high levels of competency at their jobs.
[–]KaiserTheRaven 226 points227 points228 points 1 day ago

This is true, but meanwhile the replacement refs are making bad calls (or missing things like illegal hits), and things like Matt Schaub losing a piece of his ear with no penalty happen. Bad refs means the players are less safe.
[–]Tibeuts 25 points26 points27 points 1 day ago
There was a penalty on the Schaub hit, and the hit on him the play before. However, there was the knocked out for 11 min hit on Heward Bey with no penalty, so the point still stands.
[–]newtothelyte 8 points9 points10 points 1 day ago
What makes you certain that the regular refs would've called that? They are not perfect either.
DHB didn't get hit helmet to helmet, the defender launched his body not his head, you can make an argument for defenseless receiver but its a stretch. He just took an unfortunate hit to the chin. Its a contact sport, and these kind of things happen from time to time. On this instance, it happened under the watch of replacement refs.
GIF of hit
Gif of helmet to helmet
Everybody is up in arms because of the result of the play (him being knocked out). Had he popped up and started trash talking, no one would have said anything.
[–]lumberjack_flapjack 7 points8 points9 points 1 day ago
But then look at the Baltimore-New England game last night, it got to the point where it's not even clear who should have won that game, it was the biggest joke I have ever watched.
[–]newtothelyte 4 points5 points6 points 1 day ago
That game was definitely sloppy. Last weeks Denver-Atlanta game was pretty bad too.
[–]Tibeuts 2 points3 points4 points 1 day ago
I can't be sure the regular refs would have called it, but I think they would have. he tackled pretty high and I think it would have been called as defenseless receiver. if it helps, Mike Pereira said it should have been a penalty.
[–]newtothelyte 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
I do trust mike pereira, he knows his stuff.
[–]rmc1317 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
That hit was definitely not illegal, and I would've been up in arms if they started bitching because someone got hurt in a contact sport so they called a penalty. Sometimes this shit happens, like you said
[–]HansGrub3r 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
He tucks his arms and leads in with his head. It's the rules. It also says in the rules it doesn't matter if it's intentional or incidental, it is still helmet to helmet, and that's an automatic penalty.
Argue all you like about it being a contact sport, there are rules in place and ensuring they are enforced as equal as possible across the board has nothing to do with your views on them.
Tucks his arms and leads in with his head? He grabs him and tries to shoulder him down but ends up hitting his chin with his head. If you seriously look at that gif and think he's tucking his arms and leading with his head you have no idea what the words tuck and lead mean.

[–]CrosswordsAreFun 4 points5 points6 points 1 day ago
This goes to show how hypocritical the NFL is. We've seen the NFL become more strict with player safety after the recent awareness about trauma caused to the brain (and lawsuits filed) from playing football. Yet, here the NFL is continuing to put the players in danger every week because they don't want to give up 1% of revenue.
[–]Aszolus 2 points3 points4 points 1 day ago
There was a roughing the passer penalty called on the Matt Shaub hit. There was also one on the play before I believe.
[–]vahntitrio 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
I thought that play was penalized?
[–]cunt_stamp 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
Or giving teams a multitude of extra timeouts? ..each week!?
[–]WhyAyala 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
This is especially true. Consider boxing, calling a match when a fighter won't give up is a difficult call to make but the refs job is to ensure that both fighters are safe. Or at least that one doesn't die during the match.
[–]DrSmoke -7 points-6 points-5 points 1 day ago
Football will never be safe. We are going to see the sport mostly end over the next few decades. As people wake up to the fact that it isn't safe to put your kids into school football, and people play the sport less, and less.
Its "unsafe at any speed" type shit.

I have to chime in here because some of this info isn't correct. The refs are not asking for more money. They are just asking for the pensions they were promised for current referees, not even for future refs.
Years ago when the refs and the NFL decided on their deal, the refs agreed to be listed as part time employees without any benefits as long as the NFL agreed to provide pensions. They all agreed this was fair.
Now the NFL has locked the refs out saying that they don't want to provide the pensions any more. The refs are just asking that current refs be grandfathered into the pensions they were promised while future refs wouldn't receive them. That's it, they don't have any more demands, they aren't asking for more money.
The NFL, and I don't know why since they are a $9 billion a year business, chose to lock out the refs in some sort of power-play.
NFL refs actually do a lot more work than people think. They have to travel the day before and after the game, work the game, and then study during the week because they are tested weekly on their knowledge of NFL rules. If they don't pass their weekly tests they may not be able ref and can be let go.
The pension plan for refs would cost 1/3 of 1% of yearly NFL revenue I believe, so it's not like it's bankrupting the league. They just really don't want to pay it it seems.
TL;DR: Refs aren't asking for more money, just the pensions they were promised. NFL locked them out cause they didn't want to pay what they agreed to.
[–]rsmichaud 25 points26 points27 points 1 day ago
The regular NFL refs are saying that they deserve higher pay (which they do) but the fat cat commissioner won't give them what is spare change to any starting player. (Keep in mind that the refs would still make less than $100,000 and that this year alone Drew Brees is making $20,000,000.
[–]gibson_ 43 points44 points45 points 1 day ago
The NFL doesn't pay Drew Brees $20,000,000, though, the team does.
And isn't being a ref a part time job?
(Not taking a stance in this minefield of a debate. Jus askin')
[–]IamGrimReefer 6 points7 points8 points 1 day ago
it's not really a part time job. they have tons of meetings every week about rule changes and they go over tape just like the players. they have meetings about the bad calls from the previous week. they have to stay in great physical shape, too.
if you add up all that time it's probably close to a full time job.
[–]ca990 5 points6 points7 points 1 day ago
Yeah but they work for 16 weeks a year
[–]IamGrimReefer 3 points4 points5 points 1 day ago
plus 4 preseason games and playoffs, but yeah they're not working 52 weeks/year.
i wonder if teams get the official refs for their preseason scrimmages that have refs.
[–]ostermei 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
they have to stay in great physical shape
Oh? Please, tell me more.
[–]IamGrimReefer 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
so...are you saying because premiere league refs are in better shape my statement is untrue?
[–]ostermei 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
Just implying that there's an AWFUL lot of standing around in American football.
Like, a LOT of just standing around.
oh yeah, most definitely. in high school and at lots of smaller college's the games have a really great pace, but once the game are being broadcast forget about about it.
at every televised game, college or professional, there's a guy in an orange vest that will walk about 5 yards onto the field every time the network wants a TV time-out. once you realize this and start looking for him, it'll piss you off how often this guy is on the field. of course you'll only see him if you go to the game, you'll never see him on TV.
at least we have the 2-minute warning. it allows the network one last commercial break before the end of the half, but it also allows the teams to dictate the pace of the final 2 minutes and control the clock.
[–]irishmac3 -1 points0 points1 point 1 day ago
Yeah, they also have 300 lb freaks of nature running around in full pads and helmets coming at them. They get hit a lot.
Id rather be a soccer ref
[–]BigBadMrBitches 10 points11 points12 points 1 day ago
I read somewhere that the refs want higher pay because they're trying to make reffing a full time job, causing many of them to have to stop working second jobs.
[–]rsmichaud -27 points-26 points-25 points 1 day ago
I'm aware that the league itself isn't paying Brees, I'm just saying that it's ridiculous that a quarterback can make more than 20 times more than the actual referee, who is probably the most important person on the field.
[–]gibson_ 33 points34 points35 points 1 day ago
who is probably the most important person on the field.
Well that is a bold claim. Who is easier to replace, a referee, or a star quarterback?
If the refs are worth $20,000,000/year, then why don't they get paid that?
[–]rsmichaud -14 points-13 points-12 points 1 day ago
Without the refs, all the quarterbacks would be hurt, the refs are the only ones ensuring that Richard Seymour doesn't kill half the Quarterbacks in the league.
Also, I'm not saying that it's ridiculous that the quarterbacks are making 20 million dollars, I'm saying it is ridiculous thatpeople are perfectly content with I person making more in a year than I will probably make in my enter life, but when the refs want a raise, it's absolutely despicable and they don't deserve to be referees.

50k for a white male with a Bachelors, but the medians range from 15k for a female, high school dropout to 100k for a male "professional".

[–]TheSweeney 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
I want to say that for a four person family, the average was around $50k. (I looked it up to make a point once, but that was around when the recession got into full swing.) Although, anecdotally, the real average is probably slightly lower, probably around $40k.
[–]ttuurrppiinn 3 points4 points5 points 1 day ago
The average household income was $60,528 back during the 2004 Census Bureau's Economic Survey. But, it's better to look at the median income ($44,389). Those at the top making millions (and billions) really inflate the average income.
Edit: Source
[–]TimeZarg 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago

Refs work 20 4 hour games a year I'll take $5000 a game.
[–]DoYourResearch -1 points0 points1 point 1 day ago
Important things to keep in mind:
1) You are incorrect--NFL officials already make more than $100,000 /yr ($100-150,000, or $8,000 per game)
2) They work ~10 hours a week for 16 weeks, meaning that Head Referees are payed ~$1,000 /hr.
3) Their pay is competitive with the pay of officials in other professional sports, but NFL officials are the only part timers among them. Officiating is a full time job in every sport not football, and those officials often get payed less than in the NFL.
4) A very large number of people would happily do the job for free (and if that offer was on the table, I bet we could find 200 people out of the 100,000,000 fans out there who would do a good job)
5) Drew Brees is one of the highest paid athletes in the world. On average, professional football players make between $1 and $2 million. Since they work full time and year-round in some capacity, it's very reasonable to expect that they work more than 10-20x as much as referees work.
6) The sticking point in the negotiations is retirement benefits. They work part time. They are striking over retirement benefits. How many part time employees in this country even get retirement benefits?
[–]BJ2K 10 points11 points12 points 1 day ago
Actually, referees work much more than that. Each week they study the game, etc..
yeah, way more than 10 hours per week. the game alone is about 4 hours, then add in watching film, meetings on rules, meetings on rule changes, meetings on bad calls, and working out to stay in shape. much more than 10 hours.
[–]DoYourResearch 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
Alright, I'll buy that. There is an awful lot of paperwork. My estimate was ~4 hours in game and things directly related to the game + ~6 hours rereading the rule book (which Ed Hochuli says he does every week and frankly ought to be required of every ref, but most don't do it), studying film, studying last week's film, and taking required quiz. It's a low estimate. But, even if they watched every game played beginning to end, it would still be only 20 hours of tape. And they don't do that.
The larger point stands: they work part time, and get paid a lot of money to do it. But, again, I can accept that most probably work more than 10 hours a week, for the weeks that they work.
[–]verteUP 3 points4 points5 points 1 day ago
Rookie referees only make about 55k per year.
That's just simply not true.
[–]DoYourResearch 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
Last season rookies made more than $75,000. The most senior refs just under $200,000.
Source
Also,
A very large number of people would happily do the job for free
Is true
And
I bet we could find 200 people out of the 100,000,000 fans out there who would do a good job
Is also true.
First, it's an opinion.
And second, you're claiming that if you randomly selected 500,000 football fans, not a single one of them would volunteer to fly first class (expense paid) to a different city each week to officiate a football game, and do a good job of it.
[–]verteUP 0 points1 point2 points 13 hours ago
The current replacement refs have done officiating in some form or another for years. Most of them have officiated college on some level. They are doing a shitty job to say the least. You really think 200 regular citizens could take the job do a better job than replacement refs who have officiated college games? That's extremely foolish.
[–]DoYourResearch 0 points1 point2 points 7 hours ago
You presume that the people currently doing the job are also the most qualified to do it. Several thousand D1 football players graduate each year and don't go pro. All of them have a deep working understanding of the game. All of them have good or great situational and field awareness. They love the sport. How many would jump at the opportunity to officiate professional football games?
You're claiming that officiating 6 man high school football is better qualification than playing at the highest levels of collegiate athletics. That out of three hundred million Americans, not a single one of them is just better suited for the job. Fundamentally, you're claiming that every single person cut out to be an NFL official already is one. Somebody is being extremely foolish, here, and it isn't me.
[–]verteUP 0 points1 point2 points 6 hours ago
Officiating is NOTHING like playing the game. Just because they are good playing doesn't mean they can officiate professional sports. You don't seem to be watching the games with any knowledge of past officiating standards.
[–]ostermei 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago*
5) Drew Brees is one of the highest paid athletes in the world. On average, professional football players make between $1 and $2 million.
Actually, Brees himself is much closer to the average than what's been mentioned here. According to Google, his 2012 salary is $3 million.
He doesn't even get CLOSE to the top 50 highest-paid athletes in the world this year (although, to be fair, Google's just reporting his salary rather than salary + endorsements like we see on the list, but I don't imagine he has >$19 million in endorsements this year to crack the list).
[Edit: just found the list of the top 100, and he's still ~$13 million in endorsements shy]
[Edit Edit: And nevermind. Had no idea about that new contract. My Google Fu is weak! In my (and Forbes') defense, though, that 50 highest-paid athletes article was published almost a month before the Brees contract article.]
[–]DoYourResearch 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago*
He signed a new contract this year, which will pay him $40 million dollars for the 2012-2013 season (Source). Combined with your endorsements number, he is firmly in the top 5.
EDIT just to be clear; $37,000,000 of the contract is signing bonus, which is paid immediately, but counts against the salary cap over the life of the contract.
Excellent point! I totally missed the new contract (since it happened about a month after the one I linked and Google is still showing $3 million.)
Edited my post to backpedal on the bullshit I was spewing :)
If it's any consolation, I immediately made a mistake interpreting the terms of the contract, which was edited into my comment, and then edited out.
In conclusion, Drew Brees gets paid a lot of money.
[–]DrSmoke -6 points-5 points-4 points 1 day ago
The average American only makes ~25K a year. I think we should make them all take pay cuts. Eat the rich.
[–]whatwouldyodasay -1 points0 points1 point 1 day ago
This. Fuck 'em if they decide they can't ref for anything less than a 6-figure salary... but apparently make enough to be jobless.
[–]theRainChicken 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
The lock out isn't over salary, it's over benefits. Also, the referees dish call a strike, the NFL locked them out.

I agree that the NFL should simply pay up and end the replacement ref disaster; however, I have no sympathy for the normal refs. They work on a yearly contract basis. So, most of them are being paid more than the average American for a part-time job (and many do have additional full-time jobs).
[–]cunt_stamp 1 point2 points3 points 1 day ago
Basically, the referees are in dispute with the NFL. The NFL has hired these low-level school college officials and they've been blowing games horribly for the last 3 weeks.

It's really gotten ridiculous. They are arguing over nickels and dimes. The NFL brings in SO MUCH MONEY and they are going to chintz the referees over a few thousand dollars each?
[–]Shagoosty 3 points4 points5 points 1 day ago
Well, it's the owners of the teams that make so much money, not really the league.
[–]rmc1317 5 points6 points7 points 1 day ago
The league makes dickloads of money too off advertising
[–]livefreeordont 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
the league is a non-profit

i should be downvoted: i dont really get the whole idea of a non-profit even after researching it a bit
[–]tjm80 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
Nonprofit organizations can and do make a profit, but it must be used solely for the operation of the organization or, in the case of a foundation, granted to other nonprofit organizations.

[–]Atheocracy -5 points-4 points-3 points 1 day ago
I see so many posts complaining about this referee problem with the NFL. Well, people, if it pisses you off so much - stop watching NFL broadcasts, for fuck's sake. What is it with people on this website and supporting organizations that clearly piss them off immensely? You're not expressing your distaste of them by tuning in and watching the game every Sunday - you're telling them that they're free to do whatever they like.
[–]Shagoosty 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
Because we still support the teams and their owners.
[–]Atheocracy 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
Well, then pardon me for not being entirely sympathetic about all these referee complaints. So long as people continue to tune in and support the NFL, they're getting exactly what they payed for.
[–]Shagoosty -1 points0 points1 point 1 day ago
Because hurting the owners of the teams is the best way to affect the NFL.
Apparently not. From what I can tell, making sarcastic comments about this whole referee situation is the best way to affect the NFL. Oh, wait, no it's not. The best way to affect them would be to not watch their broadcasts and continue making them money on your viewership. Unless you have a better idea.
[–]quirkish 2 points3 points4 points 1 day ago
Let's say you've been watching your favorite show for years. You are invested heavily with all the ongoing plot lines and care about the characters and what happens to them. When it debuted this fall, one of the ancillary characters, truly someone who only pops in now and again and is only rarely part of the main plots, is replaced by some clearly incompetent actor. He is dismal to watch and makes your skin crawl when he is on screen, but thankfully you don't have to see him that often. Do you stop watching your favorite show? Do you give up on all the characters that still really care about? My guess is no, you don't. And current NFL ratings seem to agree with me.
You consider referees to be the equivalent of ancillary characters? Because as far as I can tell, this whole situation is pissing a lot of people off. I think they consider the integrity of referees to be a big deal. Which is why it baffles me that they continue to support the NFL every week. Oh well, sports fans are a strange breed.
[–]DrSmoke -2 points-1 points0 points 1 day ago
Yes, it is. Fortunately football is dying off.
[–]verteUP 2 points3 points4 points 1 day ago
Football is dying off? It's never been as popular as it is right now.
No it isn't.
[–]aleisterfinch 0 points1 point2 points 1 day ago
It takes time for things like this to take affect. You can't just say "If it's so bad, then stop watching!"
This is only week 3. It's still at the point where it's something of a spectacle. It's almost a reason to watch, just to see how shitty it is. When that gets boring to people (and we're nearing that point) they'll start watching less, because the games are too long and frustrating.
You can't just say "If it's so bad, then stop watching!"
Actually, I can. If I disagree immensely with how an organization is running things, I don't continue supporting that organization, until they get their shit together.
Because you're retarded and worship the rich?
Yes, because I watch football I worship the rich.
